CHOOSING THE RIGHT FRAME inding the right pair of glasses shouldn’t be stressful, and our qualified clinical staff are on hand to help you select the right frame. Our expert knowledge of fashion trends and your prescription will make sure that you find a frame that is stylish, practical and matches your budget.

Things to consider when buying a new frame:Your personal style Besides getting the right shape, your eyewear should reflect your fashion personality. Whether you want to blend in or stand out, consider your preferred colours and styles and how you accessorize your outfits. Don’t be afraid to try new frame styles and have multiple pairs to go with your mood and different outfits!

warm or cool, your glasses should complement your personal skin tone, hair and eye colouring. Any skin allergies If you suffer from any skin allergies or sensitivities, consider a titanium, stainless steel or plastic frame as these are less likely to cause a reaction, but speak to our qualified clinical staff who can advise on the best material to suit your needs. Weight Remember: the bigger your frame, the bigger your lens will be, therefore the more overall weight on your face. If you prefer a lightweight frame, try a rimless style from Silhouette. Some Silhouette frames weigh as little as 2 paperclips!

When you wear your glasses If you wear your glasses throughout the whole day, choose a frame you find comfortable and that matches most outfits. If you only wear your glasses occasionally i.e. reading glasses, you can dare to go a bit bolder with your styles and colours! Your skin tone With so many choices of colours, materials and styles available in our practices, we can help find you the perfect frame for your skin tone. Whether your skin tone is Silhouette Titan Minimal Art-The Icon

TREND ALERT Round & Retro Ray-Ban Clubmaster Perfect for those who aspire to style icon status. Originally released in the 80s, the iconic Clubmaster is this seasons’ must-have. Embellished Chanel 6041 Embellished sunglasses prominently appeared this year in the runways of all the best designers. Regarded as the high-fashion sunglasses of the season, it’s all about oversizing and going crazy with glitters, studs, and eye catching embellishments. These Chanel sunglasses feature a metal chain outlining the frame and quilted temples - to embrace this trend, wear with a simple outfit to really make the design stand out.

EYE MATTERS The Story of Nikon and Black & Lizars am often asked to define B&L’s success and what makes us different to other optometrist groups. In part, the answer lies in our dedicated pursuit of clinical excellence and the ability to offer our patients the very latest in diagnostic techniques and the most technically advanced lens designs, coatings and frame materials. When this is coupled with qualified, dedicated staff this is what truly makes us different! In the 1980’s I became aware that Nikon, one of the leaders in camera technology, were moving into ophthalmic lens design in their native Japan and in Canada. They were persuaded to allow us to try their lenses and the quality and performance of these lenses were so superior to other top manufacturers that we coped with the struggle of overseas supply to provide these outstanding lenses. In those days there was no remote, computer controlled manufacturing. Good old ‘phones and faxes were necessary to provide an acceptable delivery service. Fast forward now to the 2000’s and Nikon have developed a state of the art manufacturing facility in Milton Keynes and Black & Lizars have been chosen as their ONLY strategic partner in the UK. Most optometrists can purchase Nikon lenses for their patients but only B&L have direct access to the manufacturing process. What does this mean for you the patient, consumer and wearer? It means that the vast majority of lenses supplied by B&L are Nikon sourced. These lenses are of the

most technically advanced design allowing wearers to see more clearly, with less reflections both from the lens surfaces and from outside glare sources. The unique, clever design of their varifocal lenses for the over 45’s has done away with most of the historical adaptation difficulties and patients just love wearing them. Lenses that go dark in the sun, lenses that are so thin that make even the awkward prescriptions look good, they make our job so much easier and more rewarding. Who would have thought that my experimentation with a Japanese camera manufacturer 25 years ago would or could have led to such a remarkable partnership, helping us to do a better job and provide our much appreciated, loyal patients with superb products and outstanding vision?

Colin Black, Principal Optometrist E:

Have you ever been told you are not suitable for contact lenses? If so, it may be time to ask again!

ot so long ago certain prescriptions were difficult to correct with contact lenses, especially high degrees of astigmatism and the need for a separate reading prescription, or a combination of the two. Dry eyes also make lenses difficult and you may have struggled to wear lenses comfortably. Contact lenses are getting more advanced in design and material meaning that we can solve more and more of these problems. Multifocal lenses are required if you need a different prescription for reading (reading glasses or varifocals). Fine tuning the design of multifocal contact lenses has been an on-going project for most lens manufacturers, and the last 2 years have seen great advances. Multifocal lenses are now also available as daily disposables, great for part time

wear when socialising allowing you to read the menu and see the show! Many patients with astigmatism have been told in the past that contact lenses are not available in their prescription - today, this is usually not the case. Lenses to correct astigmatism are available as daily, fortnightly and monthly disposables and are easy to get used to. If you haven’t chatted to your optometrist recently about contact lenses, we encourage you to do so. Have you been unsuccessful with lenses in the past due to comfort? Recent advances in lens material could mean that lenses are now an option for you. Most discomfort is due to the lens drying - silicone hydrogel materials do not dry as readily. These lenses have been available for many years but still can cause discomfort due to the nature

of the material - the surface of the lens can cause problems. Now an innovative new material with a silicone core and water based surface is available in selected prescriptions. These water gradient daily disposable lenses may be ideal for you. Disposable lenses are constantly improving but for some complex prescriptions they are simply not an option. There are fantastic specialist contact lens manufacturers who we call on when we need a tailor made option for our patients. So if you have a high prescription, or need a multifocal lens that also corrects astigmatism, we can usually help you discover the world of contact lenses. Your optometrist will be delighted to discuss contact lens options with you so don’t be afraid to ask! Morven Campbell, Clinical Services Manager E:

I have been a career long advocate for fitting contact lenses to enhance our patients’ lifestyle and confidence, and there are thousands of happy lens wearers out there who would agree. Listening to patients of all ages has made me realise that not all optometrists are confident in fitting children and teenagers with contact lenses. Age is a factor in deciding whether someone is ready to make the step into lenses but it is not the only factor. Maturity and clinical need are far more important. Johnson&Johnson, the makers of Acuvue brand contact lenses have decided they want to help educate optometrists how and when to speak to young people and parents about lenses. They approached me last year to get involved, I was delighted to help spread this important message. We have been working together producing videos, printed guides and most recently a photo story. This story, due to be launched soon, shows the positive impact wearing lenses has had on a real patient of mine. Many of my younger patients, and their parents have been involved along the way, it has opened my eyes even further to the difference this has made to their lives. When you see a quiet patient growing into a confident teenager it is not always obvious how much of that is due to their vision correction. That same teenager sitting in front of a video camera and explaining how they feel really has an impact! It has certainly cemented my belief that nurturing confidence in our children is vital and if wearing contact lenses can help then I am pleased to play a part in their life journey.

We have recently acquired a new practice which takes the Black & Lizars portfolio of practices to 27 across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Look out for our brand new practice in Clarkston and keep an eye on our website and Facebook pages for the latest news on other new practices to join the Black & Lizars family.

Here at B&L we constantly have our eyes open to new technology. In our Belmont Street practice we have recently invested in an Optos Daytona. UV protection, not just for summer or for skin

UV exposure isn’t just a problem in the summertime. UV rays can penetrate through cloud and exposure can be up to 100 times higher when reflected off snow.1 So you should protect your eyes from UV, all day every day – even in the winter. ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses have high levels of UV-blocking as standard across the range* and when worn with wrap-around sunglasses and a peaked hat they can help to protect your eyes from the transmission of UV radiation all year-round.

Also available for astigmatism and presbyopia

UV-absorbing contact lenses are NOT substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as UV-absorbing goggles or sunglasses because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area. You should continue to use UV-absorbing eyewear as directed by your Eye Care Professional. 1. Sliney, David H. Intraocular and Crystalline Lens Protection From Ultraviolet Damage. ontrary to popular belief, the need for sunglasses is not solely limited to summer sunshine and winter sun holidays. The propensity for the sun to sit lower in the sky and the changes in our surroundings as the seasons change can make sunglasses a must have item for the Autumn and Winter. Driving in the early mornings or evenings can be very difficult due to the suns’ low position in the sky. This increases glare and can cause reflections from road surfaces. This is particularly the case when the roads are wet or icy. Glare can be greatly decreased by using a tinted lens, especially if it is combined with a polarising lens filter. This removes the scattered light that causes the glare and leaves behind only the light needed for clear vision. Black & Lizars stock a range of polarised sunglasses from Oakley and Maui Jim, which are available with both prescription and non-prescription lenses. We also offer a range of transitions lenses, which will darken and lighten throughout the day, depending on whether you are indoors or out. These can be combined with the UV blocking and anti-reflective lens coatings, which help limit the effect of harmful sun rays on the eyes. The benefits described above are equally relevant for those undertaking winter sports. When skiing or snowboarding, the snow covered ground reflects the light, more than doubling the glare. Using a tinted lens in combination with a wraparound style frame or goggle can virtually eliminate dazzling glare. Black & Lizars offer a large range of winter sun eyewear, including sunglasses and goggles. Recent years have seen giant strides in prescription lens technologies. This now allows us to supply Oakley prescription lenses in a much wider range of prescriptions and frame choices than ever before. We now even have specific lenses designed for specific sports, including cycling, golf and fishing. There is even a glimpse into the future, with the latest offering from Oakley set to be a ski goggle which incorporates a miniature television screen! Watch this space...

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF OUR PHOTOGRAPHIC DEPARTMENT Robert Stewart, Photographic Department Manager in Belfast obert has worked for Black & Lizars for over 30 years in the specialist photographic department within our Belfast practice. Andrew & Chris work alongside him, offering expert advice on a range of photographic and telescopic equipment for beginners and specialists.

How did you become interested in photographic retail? My interest in photography started when my parents gave me a Kodak Instamatic 126 camera for Christmas. At school I enjoyed Art & Design, especially the photography part of my studies. I remember peering into the window display of Lizars in Belfast, fascinated by all the cameras and accessories. Tell us about a typical day in the department. I start the day chatting with my staff about new products, check displays are up to date and that all is ready for the day ahead. We are then ready to deal with customer queries and sales. I’m always on the lookout for the latest products along with special value deals. Customer service is always our top priority.

What is the most interesting part of your job? This would have to be helping customers with their selection. A lot of people return to thank us for our help. Who do you cater to? We have a wide range of customers. We aim to cater for “snap shot automatic everything” to serious amateur photographers; also with binoculars and telescopes we cater for the casual observer to the more serious viewer. We are suppliers to local councils and governments, schools, colleges, universities, the National Trust etc. What sets you apart from other photographic retailers? As the sole independent photographic retailer in Belfast we aim to provide the best service, attention and value for money to our customers. Andrew, Chris and I are all deeply into photography and other outdoor pursuits. Customers recognise our interest and enthusiasm and appreciate the knowledge we have. What specialist products are offered in your department? We have a good selection of astronomy telescopes and general viewing spotting telescopes. A wide

range of binoculars for bird watching and general observation are also stocked. Brands include Hawke, Minox, Opticron and Swarovski. If you have old negatives or slides we sell a scanner; instant pictures are available with the Fuji Instax instant camera; adventure cameras are proving popular due to their compact and rugged design. What specialist services do you offer? We offer printing services such as photo restoration, scanning old negatives etc. Also old cine or video transfer to DVD; camera & binocular repairs; Digital SLR sensor cleaning; instant prints from digital cameras; developing & printing of 35mm colour negative film. Tell us about your favourite photo? I have built up a large collection of photographs including 35mm slides and

digital images. I enjoy mainly landscape photography and love travelling all over Ireland to capture the beauty of our country. I was in County Wexford recently and got a shot of a beautiful sunrise. Of course as a dedicated photographer this meant being up 4.30am! My favourite photo was taken on a trip to Donegal – this donkey group shot was captured while drving along the Inishowen peninsula (a 100 mile scenic drive). The road leads to the most northerly point in Ireland known as Malin Head. What’s the most unusual item you’ve been asked for? We were asked for a harmonica recently! How do you relax in your spare time? I swim twice a week. When I can, I hit the trail on my mountain bike and also love catching a wave on my body board. Needless to say I always bring my camera.
