B+K DREAMS UP INTERIORS APPRECIATED & PRAISED ALL OVER THE GLOBE

Topolopompo | Tel-Aviv | 2013

INSPIRATION

“Inspiration is multifaceted and evasive. Actually, inspiring things are never aware of them being inspiring, it is us who endow them with to this status. Inspiration is tangible and intangible, it is vocal and silent, metaphysical and mundane, ecstatic and introverted. It is the universe. We keep our minds and eyes open to be able to absorb it in consciously and subconsciously every minute of our life.

WHO WE ARE? "B+K Architecture have managed to materialise one of the essences of the late modern self: its unique desire for originality and authenticity, which aims at objectification in each and every personal choice that is made – from which diet to follow and which playlist to create, to which communities to belong to and which commodities and styles to consume.

WHAT WE DO?

TEXT (klaartje)

HOW WE DO IT?

W Hotel living room door detail | Amsterdam | Netherlands

HOW WE DO IT? B+K combines both the left and right side of the brain. The methodology of the process leads to a lyrical result that leave clients and visitors alike in a state of wonder.

“We believe that our way of working creates the opportunity to merge all the unique and varied elements that a project carries within itself. The site, with its history, its culture and its tradition, the sky with its light and shadows, the clients with their needs and doubts, the food that you will taste in a restaurant, the pampering you will enjoy in an hotel or the soul that a family will give to its home: it all speaks to our imagination. we are so trained in listening that we are able to hear the silence.

CONTEXTUAL INSIGHTS "Architecture is the art of relevance. Relevance springs up from cultural, historical, physical and sensorial insights rendering each place with a distinctive character. We believe that a good design should speak about the essence of place and time. That Local could easily speak Global and that 'Glocal' is the future. Our design process starts with a comprehensive research into these indigenous particularities. We spread them on our desktop and synthesize those which are most relevant and have the capacity to lead us forward to the essence of our design."

CRAFTSMANSHIP "Crafts embody the essence of time and place. Craftsmanship nourishes that very essence, whether it is a hand woven textile, a blown glass or a 3D printed chair. Wherever our projects take us, we explore indigenous crafts to tell an authentic story that could not be told anywhere else. We believe that every culture should celebrate its soft power and share it in a coherent and accessible fashion so it could reach and inspire people all over the world."

MONUMENT 'Giving a second life to monuments renders them with relevance and vitality that radiate far beyond their physical location and enriches the collective memory of our cities with their spirit. When designing within monuments, we treat the past as absent-present. Keeping the building's 'personality' runs as an undercurrent while we develop our designs. The juxtaposition of the existing and the newly proposed schemes allows for a totally new reading of the building without losing its soul. The soul of a monument is tangible as much as it is intangible and therefor any intervention in such a building is an open and attentive dialogue between us and the building through which synergy presents itself."

DETECTING "Every project is a journey through a multitude of layers of knowledge, context and experience awaiting to be revealed. We travel light and set to the journey with a clean slate delighted by the sheer freedom to move through and absorb. It is both a sensorial and a cognitive journey complimented with intuition where we are mere observers of rituals of modern life.Yet it is not the obvious functional purposes of their nature that we are after, but rather the ephemeral potential of their very essence."

CREATING MINI WORLDS "Transcending consumers beyond the 'vie quotidian' into the heart and soul of a brand is a powerful bridge towards a "beautiful friendship". It is a playful act which allows us to create effective events in selected city spaces, turning mere urban spaces into signature places. Each project we do exemplifies this modus operandi where ideas develop into spatial and social systems of communication."

AWARDS EntrĂŠe, Best Hotel Design, W Amsterdam (2016): “This design is world class as we have never seen in the Netherlands. Graceful and daring, with a touch of glamor in the right places. The W Amsterdam is grand and compelling, with an eye for detail."

AWARDS EntrĂŠe, Best Restaurant Design, Mr. Porter (2016): "The design of this restaurant is right down to the last detail. But there is more than that. MR PORTER is sexy and stylish with a feminine and elegant touch. A design that creates a unique and dynamic experience for every guest. In short: non-Dutch, or: a restaurant with international allure, although the one might prefer the design to be cosmopolitan, the other progressive, or luxurious. A very justified winner in this category."

AWARDS EntrĂŠe, Best Cocktail Bar, The Duchess (2015): "This breathtaking bar surprises first and foremost with its imposing appearance, but the decisive factor is the very extensive cocktail menu full of forgotten cocktails and the special drink rituals that this bar is full of conviction. The charismatic bartenders, the assortment, the cocktails, the interior and the presentation of The Duchess are the best, new cocktail bar of 2015."
