T HE E GG OR THE C HICKEN ...M ISSION OR THE CHURCH ? Which comes first?!! This morning I was interceding, calling forth actually, the emerging generation in Tallinn out of darkness and toward the light of Christ. My heart is growing a fond affection for a people I have yet to meet. My passion is stirred for the young lions (our interns) whom will carry Christ in the form of loving acts of kindness and bold messages to the cities. I am interceding for laborers to join us, especially those "not yets" who will be attracted to our sense of purpose for people and join us even before they believe. And I am attracted to those saints who have lost their purpose, their passions due to the pointless, fruitless, and redundant routines of religion. Mission takes on a whole new meaning for me these days in light of church planting. As a church planter of a season past, I am familiar with the path. But this time the path will be different, in fact the form will be different, though it will be true to the purpose of a local church. When I think of the very first Christian church, before pentecost, the 72 or the crowds on the hills, but those twelve and their shepherd, I see followers, who became doers, who became believers. I witness in scripture a process by which men are compelled, shaped, convinced, and empowered as they went about following Jesus to the least and separated, doing Kingdom work. Their energies were not static and stored, but kinetic and disbursed. They struggled against forces seen and unseen, they were tested, they failed, they overcame. They became acquainted with one another's best and worst, and they grew together, and they were bound to one another and the Lord through mission. Together they were on mission and they gained their identity, value, and purpose. And as a result, a community was fashioned with a distinctive culture, a unified purpose, and I believe most importantly a shared story. A church was born. I adopted the value that mission, the "go”-ing of the called, is our primary activity, and as we go together church results. I understand the biggest task for the leadership of this mission will be to keep “mission” a continuous engagement, a lifestyle, so that "church" will always be expressed and manifest as a result of mission. “Go-ing” until they all know...Brett
