Before a fire happens, everyone should learn how to operate a fire extinguisher. Quick action with a fire extinguisher can save a life and property.

Warning! • A fire extinguisher should be inspected monthly so it will be ready for use. • Discard an extinguisher if dents or corrosion is present: CANNISTER MAY EXPLODE! • An extinguisher must be fully charged to operate. 5

Pull the pin – this will allow the fire extinguisher to discharge.

Aim at the base of the fire – not the flames.

• If the handle will not squeeze, make sure the pin is pulled completely out. • If the fire does not extinguish, make sure you are aiming at the source (base) of the fire, not the flames. • If the extinguisher fails to operate, check the gauge. The needle must be in the “green” zone, fully charged. 17


• The most common type of home fire extinguisher is the multipurpose ABC class. • Most home fire extinguishers should be replaced after discharge. Some extinguishers may be recharged.
