Technology is key to success for IBDs James Steel, director at cloud-based EPOS solution provider Citrus-Lime, is concerned for IBDs yet to adopt extended payment and fulfilment options for customers

T

he UK retail sector was undergoing a structural shift before the pandemic, but the rapid uptake of digital services means retailers need to have a greater sense of urgency in adopting new technologies. All shopping now starts online, so an e-commerce site with integrated stock is a must for any retailer. But it’s not just about having a website; to survive and thrive, retailers need to be agile and offer their customers choice. In a recent report, the Bicycle Association valued the UK cycling market at £2.31 billion. There has been double digit growth across all the main categories and, as cycling continues to play a part in transport, health and fitness, the trend is forecast to continue. Aside from the obvious challenge of matching supply with demand, I believe independent retailers need to ensure that customers can access products in a way that’s convenient to them. Cycling may be enjoying a renaissance, but IBDs need to ensure they keep up with the way consumers want to buy. Cyclists spend meaningful amounts of money on their passion, so it’s not cash that most people can just pluck out of thin air. In addition to card transactions, cycle retailers should be offering multi-channel payment provision, such as PayPal, Apple Pay and Klarna. Equally, they need to provide services that enable customers to pay for their bikes on finance or through instalments. I also believe that giving the customer options on how they take ownership of their new wheels also plays into the hands of a good customer experience. It’s not just about selling bikes in isolation, it’s about helping people to buy

www.bikebiz.com

BB-AUG21-PG07.indd 7

the right bike for them in a way that suits their needs. Good service builds loyalty. Coming into store still offers all the excitement it always has, but retailers need to extend the fulfilment options with Click & Collect and delivery services. Click & Collect, in particular, is proving to be really popular as people can pick up their goods at a time that’s convenient to them. There’s no doubt there’ll always be a place for face-to-face in retail – it’s the heart of every independently run business – but IBDs do need to move away from a traditional storecentric business model. The opportunities presented by digital services can’t be ignored, so retailers need to embrace them if they’re to keep pace with changing consumer behaviour. n Citrus-Lime was established by Neil McQuillan in 1999. Although the business started life as a pure tech company, in 2014 he noticed a gap in the market for a complete Point of Sale solution in the independent retailer sector. McQuillan set about combining his love of the great outdoors with a talent for all things programming. He spent two years researching the market to develop software that addresses the everyday issues faced by independent retailers in the cycle, outdoor and equestrian space. Today, Citrus-Lime is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of cloud-based Point of Sale systems. Its Cloud POS forms the foundation of the End-to-End Cloud Retail Solution, designed specifically to help retailers control costs, reduce discounting and inspire loyalty.

POINTS OF VIEW

Is subscription the future of urban cycling? We’re witnessing the end of bike ownership in urban areas, writes Tom Hares, co-founder and CEO of Buzzbike

L

ast spring, with £2 billion promised by the Government for cycling and walking initiatives, we were promised a ‘golden age’ for the bike following lockdown. For a long time now we’ve been told that a greener future means more people owning bikes. However, I’m of the firm belief that we’re witnessing the end of bike ownership in urban areas. Thanks to the pandemic, the demand for bikes has spiralled with people rushing to secure a limited supply. For those of us championing bikes as the silver bullet to solve many of the issues at the centre of city life, this was our nirvana moment in the backdrop of a crisis, the true beginning of a global cycle revolution. Whatever sector of the bike industry you were in, buy, share or in our case subscribe, the result was record sales numbers. Over the last 12 months our fledgling business, which is based on bike subscription rather than ownership, has grown 450% and, whilst this once-in-ageneration shift to two wheels was getting the headlines, there was an equally profound subplot emerging. The largely millennial first-time cyclists drawn to

8 | August 2021

BB-AUG21-PG08-09.indd 8

subscribe vs. own were a fresh breed of new cyclist. Before the pandemic, first-time cyclists had carefully considered this decision, had likely been meaning to do it for years, had spent time thinking about what bike to get, how they would deal with repairs, purchased theft insurance, researched equipment and planned their routes to work. This new group of newbies were very different. They had little time to ponder or prepare. Their demands were for a turnkey solution that offered everything they needed in one package on their terms. To subscribe was completely natural. If we are to realise more liveable cities through a cycle revolution it is this group – the 90% not currently cycling that we will need to convince. This reinforced our belief that subscription was the future of urban cycling and what we were witnessing was the beginning of the end of urban bike ownership for the next generation. “What about “Boris Bikes” – London’s bike share scheme or the plethora of bike share options spread across our pavements?”, I hear you ask. We absolutely

POINTS OF VIEW

believe they will have a role to play but are publicly focused on what is known in transportation as “the last mile” – essentially filling in a part of your journey versus the primary way we get around. It’s very unlikely they will ever be able to reach the coverage to be convenient enough to get us from A-B daily, are often too heavy and uncomfortable for long journeys or in the case of the more desirable electric versions, are prohibitively expensive. OK, so as a founder of a bike subscription company, I would say the future is bike subscription, so let’s look at some of the evidence. First, it’s hard to avoid the meteoric rise in subscription services, catering for every aspect of consumer life to the point that the average household now has seven subscriptions with an estimated annual spend of £700, double what it was in 2017. From the once unthinkable, now “traditional” music and TV subscriptions to petfood, meal boxes, craft beer, beauty and even coffee pods, with customers prepared to pay £25+ per month for a supply of their favourite brand of caffeine.

‘Subscriptions are becoming the new normal’ The mobility market has been slow to catch on but in the last few years many of the leading car makers have realised they need to move swiftly to avoid becoming the next Blockbuster (who were famously slow to realise the pace at which Netflix was taking over) and are rapidly rolling out their subscription offers to keep up with changing consumer needs. So why not bikes? We buy into subscriptions for one of five reasons: reduced cost of entry, convenience, a curated experience, personalisation and controlling monthly outgoings. At Buzzbike, we tap into each of these areas to provide a holistic approach to starting and keeping our members riding by making it super easy to start, with no big upfront cost of purchasing a high-quality commuter bike (compared to a £450 outlay – the average cost of a bike in the UK). For a first-time cyclist, being able to access a high-quality bike daily is vital in giving cycling a proper go without the commitment of purchase. When they are up and running it then becomes about convenience and experience – which any reputable marketeer or trend caster will tell you are vitally

www.bikebiz.com

BB-AUG21-PG08-09.indd 9

important aspects to a millennial purchase decision. After all, who wants to be spending their time fixing (or paying for someone else to) their bike if we can come to you and fix it at your door or replace it if it gets stolen in one touch on our app. More than ever, as we head towards lockdown easing, connecting with new people, seeing new things and enjoying the best of city life will be more sought after than ever. Rather than just having a bike, a subscription bike can provide members with education, support and community through road ready workshops, group rides, cycle friendly turn by turn navigation and treats to the best food, drink and experiences in the city the more they ride through a virtual reward currency. Subscriptions are becoming the new normal, there’s a growing need to solve the issue of urban mobility as city populations swell (70% of us are expected to live in cities by 2050, up from 55% today) and, on top of that, a younger demographic is demanding more than a transactional relationship from every purchase. All of this combined means that we’re convinced we are at the beginning of the end of urban bike ownership. Will we see the death of bike ownership overnight? Will it be everyone? All types of bikes? Of course not. But the change has begun and it’s a transition we expect to be complete by the end of the decade. n

Via its app, Buzzbike will come to your door to fix or replace your bike

The UK MTB market is in great health, says Silverfish UK’s Darren Mabbott

The rise of MTB Rebecca Morley examines the UK mountain bike market and what’s behind the rise in popularity

W

ith the global increases we’ve seen in cycling across the globe over the past 18 months, one area that has also grown in popularity is mountain biking. According to Market Research Future (MRFR), the outlook appears ‘quite promising’ with the increasing cross-country competitions worldwide, with the MTB market expected to grow at approximately 10% CAGR from 2020 to 2027. Adventure tourism is the fastest-growing tourism industry worldwide, and several countries are focusing on new mountain bike strategies aiming for an economic boost. According to the latest research from Mintel on the UK cycling market, which found that bike volume sales rose an estimated 22% in 2020, MTBs remain the most popular type of adult bicycle, with one in three cyclists (33%)

www.bikebiz.com

BB-AUG21-PG13-15.indd 13

currently owning one. The popularity of mountain bikes and hybrids reflects the type of ‘new customer’ created by the pandemic, says John Worthington, senior analyst at Mintel – mainstream leisure cyclists, rather than the cycling ‘hardcore’. “Recently, we have seen a significant influx of off-road riders at all levels,” says Georgia Leslie, category lead – mountain, Specialized. “People are rediscovering routes from home for a variety of different reasons, be it just getting off the road, the ability to escape and explore, adventure or would you believe, just for fun. “Along these same lines, the bikes themselves have become increasingly more capable over the past few years, with shorter travel bikes becoming hugely popular in more recent times, with the handling being more capable.

“On the other hand, on platforms with slightly more travel, the Mullet set-up is definitely a trend that has become more widely received and can now be found on many more models from different brands. “I think we can all agree the popularity of e-MTBs has increased significantly in recent years, with a huge portion of the mountain bike market now focused on this segment. This trend is certainly here to stay and is only going to grow even further, especially with lightweight systems bridging the gap between analogue and full powered e-bikes. At the end of the day, mountain biking is all about fun and adventure and e-bikes make that more accessible.” The global e-mountain bike market was valued at around $5 billion in 2020, and it is expected to reach over $10 billion by 2026, projecting a CAGR of more than 12%, according to Research And Markets; and the e-MTB market is led by Europe and followed by North America and Asia-Pacific. According to the German Bike Industry Association (ZIV), a record 585,000 e-mountain bikes were sold in Germany last year. By comparison, 151,000 mountain bikes without motors were sold in the same period. As such,

mountain bikes and cargo bikes are reportedly the only categories in the bike market that are selling more bikes with an electric drive system than without. Almost every third e-bike sold in Germany is an e-mountain bike, according to Eurobike. This makes them the second biggest product category in the e-bike segment, after trekking bikes. Despite the fact that there are no 2021 market figures yet, bike retailers have reportedly indicated that there is a clear upward trend in the e-MTB market. The factors behind this include the bike market boom due to COVID-19 and also new technical developments in e-mountain bikes that have won over traditional bike fans to the product segment. Increasing interest The UK mountain bike market is in great health and is probably growing at a faster rate than at any time since the late 80s/early 90s, says Darren Mabbott, managing director, Silverfish UK. “Whilst the recent increased interest in cycling linked to COVID-19 and lockdowns has benefited mountain biking, at Silverfish we’ve been aware of increased interest for much longer.

Mountain biking has grown and diversified over the past few years 14 | August 2021

“We have seen retailers, many of whom started out with us on the journey way back in 1999, grow through their unwavering commitment and passion for mountain biking. In the last decade, savvy bike retailers, some of whom entered the market on the back of the road bike boom, have recognised that their customers are increasingly interested in mountain biking and have seen it as a way of sustaining their own growth.” Silverfish thinks there have been a number of factors behind this growth, Mabbott continues. Mountain bikes have got better and better – suspension technology, frame design, innovation in terms of wheel sizes, better componentry (1x groupsets, tubeless tyres, dropper posts, etc) have all contributed to the MTB riding experience improving more rapidly than any other part of the cycling world. “That innovation fuels desirability, which in turn fuels bike and component sales. “There are also more and better places to ride,” continues Mabbott. “Purpose-built trail centres hardly existed ten years ago. Back in the day, I used to ride a mountain bike with an OS map holder on the bars to help find the bridleways that the local farmer had ploughed over. “Nowadays, there is a veritable explosion of new riding venues across the country. The all-weather nature of many of these extends the riding season and ability-graded routes make them a great choice for everyone, from newcomers to the most experienced riders. “When you add in the improved facilities and excellent café options at most of these centres, they drive interest in mountain biking across a much broader cross section of the public. As a sport, mountain biking has grown and diversified over the past few years and with better media coverage, everything from downhill, enduro and cross-country racing have all found new fans. The upcoming Olympics with Tom Pidcock as a genuine medal contender should boost this even further and make the sport even more aspirational. “Last but not least, e-MTB has finally arrived in the UK. As a market we were relatively late to get behind the growing interest in e-MTBs – while on mainland Europe e-bikes were the best-selling models in many manufacturers’ mountain bike ranges as far back as five years ago, it has only been in the past two years that interest has really taken off in the UK. “That being said, we are rapidly making up for lost time and e-MTBs are now seen as extremely desirable, are widely accepted as ‘real mountain bikes’ by enthusiasts and are bringing in new and returning riders into mountain biking.”

www.bikebiz.com

BB-AUG21-PG13-15.indd 15

Constantly improving technology has helped that acceptance with the latest generation of e-MTBs being lighter, handling better and offering really satisfying overall performance, Mabbott continues. “P&A brands have also woken up to the different needs of e-MTBs and their riders – Michelin’s E-Wild tyre range is a great example. When we introduced the range to the UK in 2019, it was seen as a niche product but has rapidly become one of our best-selling ranges.” In terms of what the future holds, Silverfish still thinks the outlook is massively positive and there is a lot of potential for mountain biking to keep growing – with lots of new riders, leisure and road cyclists who need to experience the lure of the dirt, says Mabbott. “The trends we’ve seen drive interest over the past decade show no sign of reversing: mountain bikes will continue to get better, options in terms of places to ride will keep growing, the sport will get easier to follow and British stars will inspire new generations of bikers, and e-MTBs will keep making new fans and opening up what’s possible.” n ‘Mountain Biking is all about fun and adventure’

PRODUCT PARTNER - EBFEC

“Where are your e-bikes, exactly?” EBFEC general manager Nico Law says visitors to the facility expect far bulkier frames

E-bikes for all Nico Law introduces Polish e-bike manufacturer EBFEC as it seeks new distribution deals

An electric bike for every customer’. This is how Nico Law, EBFEC’s general manager, defined his brand in a brief and powerful statement. “We want to make e-bikes that everyone can afford, ride and enjoy,” said Law. “There is a stereotype that e-bikes belong only to a particular group of people, and that they are highly priced. We don’t think that has to be the case, and we want to break the mould. That’s why EBFEC was founded.” He added: “Being affordable doesn’t mean we compromise on quality. We absolutely comply with European and British standards in e-bike safety and provide obligatory support. You have to be careful; many cheap bikes sold on e-commerce are dangerous.” When asked about the price, Law is confident. “Our prices are very competitive. Let’s call them a killer,” he said.

BB-AUG21-PG18-19.indd 18

The most bicycle-like e-bike The first impression of EBFEC’s e-bike range is their seamless design. The frame is slim and straightforward, and the internal cable routing is clean and tidy. Only a small black charging port on the down tube and the control panel on the handlebar can perhaps remind you that it is actually an e-bike. Lithium batteries are subtly integrated into the tubes, not only to beautify the look, but also to offer more protection, which, according to Law, is proprietary technology of EBFEC. “There is always risk associated with add-on battery packs, especially in the event of a crash, or if water is involved,” said Law. “Our battery is reinforced and contained by the frame tubes, providing more safety.” The battery cells, which went through all safety certifications, were supplied by LG and Panasonic. “We have received many visitors to the factory, and they often ask me the same question following a guided

tour: ‘Where are your e-bikes, exactly?’ So many visitors tend to think of bulky shapes for e-bikes – our engineering breakthrough is just so amazing.” Built in Poland with care EBFEC bikes have been put on the market throughout multiple European countries, including Poland and Spain. The production base of EBFEC is located in the west suburb of Polish city Wrocław. The facility covers an area of about 10,000 square metres, with two professional e-bike production lines. “Our annual output is more than 200,000 units,” explained Law.

“We have become a big player in Europe. The factory has met European standards of environment and safety, and visits are welcomed. We put in a lot of effort. The investment was made in the third quarter of 2020, when the pandemic was unfortunately at the peak and lockdown was in place. Three expatriate colleagues and I were on our own to arrange everything from scratch. Really, we only had an empty workshop in the beginning. Machinery, materials, workforce, logistics and so on had to be sought out in an extremely difficult time. Thanks to everyone, we made it happen and I am proud of such an achievement.” Good lead time and stock The global shortage of bike parts has had a severe impact on the supply chain. Law said: “We have confidence in our supply chain management. We can take good care of lead time and stock. It’s at the top of our priority list.” Asked about the UK market, Law added: “The UK has left the European Union, but thanks to the new trade deal, British buyers don’t have to pay tariffs on our e-bikes. We prepared four different models in the first batch to accommodate different application scenarios of British riders. The help of local distributors, resellers and retailers are indispensable in bringing EBFEC to every customer.” n EBFEC is actively recruiting distributors. MiRiDER recently moved into a new 7,000 sq ft facility in Wigan

‘The time is now’ Rebecca Morley visits MiRiDER’s new production facility in Wigan to find more about the brand, its ambitions and what makes it unique

W

ith its new 7,000 sq ft facility in Wigan, folding e-bike brand MiRiDER has its eyes set on serving dealers all over the UK. And each bike is built by hand by a trained operative in the facility, which also has its very own test track so the team can ensure each model is up to standard. Each bike also has a sticker so you can see who made your bike, adding a personal touch to each model. Marketing director Martin Higginson says: “We build the bike here, and there are a few advantages to that. Some people would ask: ‘Why don’t we get the bike made somewhere else and bring it in in complete bike form?’ The reason being, with COVID and the shipping issues, and supply chains being a big problem for the industry, what it allows us to do is if, for example, we have a component that is in short supply, we can swap that single component out of the bike being built.

www.bikebiz.com

BB-AUG21-PG21-23.indd 21

“We’re able to react in terms of building a product – we can react to different colours people want. It might be that the orange model is selling particularly well, so we can up the production of that very quickly. We can react to demands of the marketplace.” MiRiDER currently has around 60 dealers in the UK so far, a number it is looking to grow. The team started in the Wigan area building a dealership, and says it’s been working well with good dealers coming on board. There are still some areas where the brand isn’t yet on people’s radar, so MiRiDER is working on dealers becoming more aware of the brand and the history behind it, so they know its story and how it is different to what is already on the market. Higginson explains: “One of the directors is a family friend, and he was looking for a folding e-bike that he could use on his motorhome trips. When he was looking at the

marketplace, the folding bikes out there were very traditional looking and he was after a great looking bike that is small enough to fit in a motorhome or a boot for him to take away on holiday, and he couldn’t find one. “He approached us, and as a group of companies with all the expertise we have, he said let’s see if it’s an industry that we want to be a part of. With the e-bike industry seeing high growth, we thought we could bring something to the table. We sourced a frame, got some components, and initially the bike was being assembled in Germany. It went really well, we sold the bikes but in the early days it was a much smaller scale. That was our purpose. One – we didn’t know the industry, and two – we didn’t know how the bike was going to be received. “2019 was the first year we actually sold any bikes; in 2020, we made improvements to the bike and we brought the assembly in house. We sold 600 bikes that year and sold out in July. The industry reviewers loved the bike. We didn’t have amazing coverage in all the areas but we were definitely growing. It was quite a hard sell to the dealers because they didn’t know the brand. After 2020, we knew we were on to something and we’re all about building on customer service, availability of the product, quality of the product, returns and warranty. That’s all a massive focus for us. We jumped from 600 bikes last year to 3,500 bikes on commitment this year. We took this building on, moved

everyone in here, increased the production, and we’ve done an excellent job in getting the frames and parts all scheduled to come in.” The brand is in a great place now, continues Higginson, and is starting to become more well known – with its dealers now selling a lot of bikes. And MiRiDER’s picking up new dealers all the time with sometimes as many as five a week, the team says. “What we’re ready for now is that next level,” says Higginson. “We’ve got great stock here for this year. It’s really trying to tell people the story behind MiRiDER, tell them where we are now. You’re going to get the best service in the industry, you’re going to get the bikes when you want them. That’s the message we’re trying to get across. The company’s been through its progression and it’s now in a position where it can really attack this market.” MiRiDER also offers a two year ‘no quibble’ warranty, the team continues, helping to give dealers confidence in the brand. MiRiDER will also give dealers a demo bike for a few days so they can experience it for themselves, learn about the brand and gauge customer feedback. And because it has so much stock in, the company has been less affected by COVID than others in the bike industry. In fact, dealers often ‘can’t believe’ how much stock the brand has available, and while other brands may not be accepting new dealers, MiRiDER is looking for them.

Each bike is hand-built by a trained operative 22 | August 2021

The facility boasts its very own test track

MiRiDER also offers a tiered marginal structure, and dealers have the option of POS as well. “We offer the pull out banners, leaflets and swing tags,” says Higginson. “If [a dealer] has got a particular space in a window, we can do custom posters and banners etc for that store. We’re not afraid to make the best use of a shop’s floor space – some are big, some are small – whatever it is, we’ll get the right information into the store.” Minimum order for MiRiDER is one bike, and the company offers free delivery for three or more bikes. This is often what dealers go for, the team says. The brand also offers a range of accessories which are shipped in separate boxes to ensure the bikes do not get damaged. About 90% of orders go with an accessory, says the team, making them hugely popular. The brand also has a growing social community, with a Facebook group that has ‘really taken off’, with people sharing experiences and arranging meet ups. “We’ve got the stock, expertise, distribution, marketing capability, great products, great reviews, so we’ve got everything from our side, it’s just tying that product and brand with the story,” says Higginson. “If they want one of the best folding e-bikes in the UK in their store, they can have it tomorrow. They can have a demo bike, they can have it in the shop, they can get stock whenever they want. The time is now.” n

Mondraker CEO Miguel Pina, UK country manager Richie Rowland and UK marketing manager Pete Drew at the Mondraker sponsored bike park La Fenasosa

Mondraker on going dealer direct in the UK Mondraker UK country manager Richie Rowland talks to Rebecca Morley about new strategies, market differences and industry innovations

M

ondraker started in 2001 in Alicante – and since then has seen its bikes make history on the race circuit and pick up multiple awards and accolades in the global media. And with its success in operating a dealer direct strategy across mainland Europe, the Spanish brand is now extending that programme to the UK. “It was a decision with a number of drivers,” says UK country manager Richie Rowland, “but most significant was the success we have enjoyed through the same strategy in other European territories. We witnessed our dealer direct strategy bring us closer to our customers, build stronger working relationships, nurture growth and allow us more flexibility and manoeuvrability to best serve those dealers who we are in partnership with.

www.bikebiz.com

BB-AUG21-PG25-26.indd 25

“Additionally, there are obvious financial advantages which have been key in being competitive in the UK market.” Rowland says the reaction from dealers has been “really great”, admitting to being a little apprehensive as to the reception the move would receive. “After Mondraker enjoyed so many years with a leading UK distributor, it’s only reasonable to expect that some dealers could have a little nervousness but I’ve been really pleased to discover that’s not been the case at all. They have all embraced the move with enthusiasm and eagerness to be part of the brand’s future, something I will always be grateful for.” Since the decision was announced, Mondraker has made further appointments to its UK team. Pete Drew has joined as UK marketing manager, bringing with him knowledge of

the UK market and media landscape, having worked with a number of high-profile brands throughout the past 15 years. Carey O’Callaghan has also joined the Mondraker UK team as South East sales manager, bringing considerable cycling industry experience to the sales team. These appointments further cement Mondraker’s commitment to the UK dealer network, the brand said. But how does the UK market differ from others around Europe? “There are obvious similarities but there are equally obvious differences,” says Rowland. “The most significant difference for me is just how advanced the UK consumers are in their spending trends, appetite for market research and buying preferences. As a nation, we were early adopters of online shopping and still remain one of the more online savvy nations, certainly far more so than some of our mainland European counterparts. “However, in total, ironic juxtaposition is that we, as an industry, are incredibly good at offering a truly enjoyable and professional retail experience in store. When you visit a lot of stores you realise that some of our UK IBDs are global market leaders in creating a friendly, inviting retail environment.” Setting new standards Earlier this year, Mondraker introduced MIND, a fully integrated telemetry device for mountain bikes. After more than three years of development, the brand’s Foxy Carbon and Crafty Carbon will incorporate the discrete hardware which makes up the MIND system, offering riders the possibility to set up their suspension with the help of the myMondraker app. MIND is made up of four wireless components. The main hardware unit is hidden inside the steerer tube and includes the front sensor which in turn reads the strength of the magnetic field given out by the magnet placed on the top of the fork legs. At the back of the bike, there’s a small sensor fixed to the top linkage of the Zero suspension system which works in conjunction with a magnet fixed to the main pivot point. These two sensors working together send all the information to the myMondraker app once a ride is finished. “Our integrated suspension telemetry system MIND is pretty exciting,” says Rowland. “To have access to so much data and features in such a simple, intuitive way without any after market purchase is truly unique. I believe that, like our Forward Geometry before it, MIND will set a new standard that will be followed by the rest of the industry. “Also – and I’ll admit this isn’t really innovation, but it is exciting – I’m convinced that thanks to folks like Tom Pidcock and Evie Richards, as well as the Olympics, we’re about to see a resurgence in XC racing. I enjoy riding every discipline of mountain biking but as someone who first fell in love with XC racing as a fresh faced youth in 1991, I find the idea of a

26 | August 2021

BB-AUG21-PG25-26.indd 26

renewed interest in it and the potential to captivate a new generation of young riders really awesome.” On plans for this year and beyond, Rowland says: “We all know 2021 and the immediate following years are going to continue to be an unpredictable and crazy time in the industry so for us it’s all about stability, consistency and patience! “We know we have the products, pricing and company structure to allow us to realise significant growth, but we also know that for the next 12-24 months that growth needs to be subdued to ensure we can comprehensively support the existing dealers rather than striving for more. “However, once the industry settles again we don’t shy away from the fact that we’re targeting ambitious growth in the UK through incredible product, exemplary customer service, strong partnerships and massive passion and dedication to the sport we love.” n

TALKING POINTS JAMES SMITH

Get a grip on your business James Smith, founder of sports consulting agency James Smith Group, offers a fresh method of measuring business performance

A

few years ago, I was recommended a book called Traction by Gino Wickman. I ignored this advice until around two years ago, and within a page or two, I was hooked. The book itself is more like a Haynes Manual than a book you might read from cover to cover. If, however, you are looking to refresh your business strategy and a new way of measuring performance without hiring expensive consultants, then you need look no further. What follows is a small summary of some key points in the book that I feel may be useful to BikeBiz readers. Vision It begins with your vision. One of the common errors in business is not knowing precisely where you want to take it. I, myself, am very guilty of this. Where would you like to be in ten years? How much do you want – realistically – to be turning over? How many staff do you want to employ? What about profitability? Perhaps you wish to exit the business at a certain point? Repeat this set of questions for five, three and one year targets, and each set of questions should bring you to the next step. This is best done in reverse, starting at ten years – it really will transform your ambitions into achievable, short-term targets.

People Who you choose to hire will probably be the most difficult and yet the most important decisions you make in your business life. One common problem is that you have the right people, but in the wrong role. The EOS People Analyser tool is a great way to have a think with your team and create some great reflection. Do your people get it? Do they understand your vision, and can they help you get there? Data Quantatative data is everywhere in business. Cut through the bumf and learn to measure everything. A good, balanced scorecard is a great way to get beyond the personalities in your business and take a peek behind each departmental door. Issues Every business faces a whole range of short- and long-term issues. Some are actively ignored, others we simply don’t get round to dealing with. Whether it’s an historical or legacy issue, or a one-off daily emergency, record those challenges on a weekly basis. Once a quarter, analyse the issues and task people to solve them. Record who was given each task and ask for weekly progress.

Processes When I worked with Primal – and during my short tenure as a consultant – an area I found particularly useful was understanding processes. There will be many people within your business that have processes that only they know. Should that person leave the business at short notice, or perhaps go into isolation, you can see how much of an inherent risk it represents to your company. Make sure these processes are recorded. Each desk should have a guide, and the guides should be on a shared cloud drive – a digital Bible, if you will! I was

sceptical, but incredibly surprised by the information that was gleaned from this exercise and it has proved invaluable since. Traction Do you know what your vision statement is? Do your staff ? Does everyone know their accountability process? Do they know where they sit in the hierarchy? Create an accountability chart for everyone in the business from top to bottom. Each role should have a terms of reference, a table guide and of course, a job description. n

usinesses across the UK cycling industry are being urged to participate in the first Cycle Industry Census – a landmark poll run by the industry trade association to set priorities and inform discussion with the Government. All in the UK cycle industry are invited to take part, be that as a retailer, distributor, manufacturer, hire operator, insurer, service provider, trainer or event organiser, or any other cycle industry business. The Census is open now and runs until 8th August 2021. Cycle industry businesses need have no concerns about privacy. All questions are optional, and the Cycle Industry Census is being conducted by an independent company, Sports Marketing Surveys (SMS), on behalf of the Bicycle Association. SMS will hold all data securely and only release aggregated results. Individual responses will not be released to anyone, even to the BA.

“This Census is an unprecedented opportunity for the industry to help drive the collective actions we need to keep cycling growing even as lockdowns ease” Steve Garidis Incentives for all who complete the Census As a thank-you for completing the survey, all who complete it will be offered three months free access to the BA’s “Market Insights” newsletter, providing unique summary insights into the latest UK sales data. All who complete the survey can also opt in for a chance to win one of ten prizes to be drawn at random: either a three-month upgrade to the top Gold access level (for those already taking part in the Market Data Service) or, for nonparticipants, there’s a chance to win a three-month free MDS trial. Each of these ten prizes would (for either option) normally cost between £2,000 and £4,000 for a medium sized business. The not-for-profit cycle industry trade association, the Bicycle Association, has commissioned the Census for three key reasons:

34 | August 2021

BB-AUG21-PG33-34.indd 34

– To gather industry-wide data on the scale, activities and capability of the UK cycle industry to convince Government of cycling’s economic contribution, locally and nationally, ahead of major spending decisions – To learn about the priorities of all in the industry so that these priorities can be fully represented at industry level – And to look to the future and ask how the industry should prepare The Census marks the first time that an industry-wide survey will gather both data and opinions from businesses across the sector. The BA’s executive director Steve Garidis said: “This Census is an unprecedented opportunity for the industry to help drive the collective actions we need to keep cycling growing even as lockdowns ease. Our contacts in Government expect us to have a deep knowledge of all sectors of the UK industry and how they can help deliver cycling growth: this Census will equip us with the answers. “We also want to hear the industry’s priorities when it comes to supporting growth. We ask, for example, about what we should prioritise from the Government when it comes to driving e-bike uptake. We ask how we can work together to tackle cycle theft, and to improve industry recruitment and careers, and much more. “To our knowledge, this is the first time many of these questions have been asked of the whole industry, from the smallest one-person retailer to the largest distributor. The answers will make a real difference – so thank you in advance for your participation.” It needs to be completed only once per business: the Census is being widely promoted via industry channels, including communications from major brands among the Bicycle Association membership, to reach the widest possible audience. Businesses may well receive several invitations to participate, but it needs to be completed only once. For businesses with multiple locations, it would be ideal if the head office could complete it for the whole business, but it will do no harm at all if other members of staff at branch offices also participate. n

minutes with... This month, BikeBiz catches up with Rockstop sales manager Cat Stables…

Can you give us a little background on Rockstop? Rockstop products are the brainchild of parent company Urofoam – a long established and trusted polyurethane specialist – which has developed bespoke technical products for the likes of Decathlon, Jaguar/ Landrover and Koenigsegg. The tyre inserts and frameguards are a direct result of the research, collaboration and testing with experienced riders and retailers. Two years ago, a group of MTB riders and mechanics, fed up with the poor quality of tubeless inserts,

www.bikebiz.com

BB-AUG21-PG37-38.indd 37

approached Urofoam with a bold idea. They wanted to create an insert which protects wheel and rim damage, without altering the ride performance. Immediately intrigued by a new engineering challenge, Urofoam and a small group of riders got to work. After many failed attempts, and some regrettable language, the tyre insert was born. Similarly, Frameguard was conceived from increasing rider frustration. A genuine solution to an issue faced by many e-MTB owners. With the huge increase in e-bike

August 2021 | 37

21/07/2021 13:48

sales, the need to repair easily cracked, factory fitted casings soon followed. Frameguard is a tough, metalreinforced polymer moulding that prevents damage to the motor/battery casing and downtube. Instead of persistent cracks, dents and shattering, the impact of rock strikes around the crank area of the frame are absorbed and dispersed. What makes Rockstop products unique? Rockstop tyre inserts drop the pool noodle styles and crude foam sections, in favour of a complex geometric design, made of tough, high density polyurethane. The insert lets sealant flow freely, allowing riders to run lower PSIs without increasing punctures, and protecting their rims from heavy impact strikes. No one else makes a moulded foam product from the material we use. Our material is a shock absorbing system, designed to absorb and disperse impacts, therefore, protecting whatever sits behind it. All our products are made in our UK factory and tested in the Lake District Fells, so put through their paces too. Can you tell us about your development and manufacturing process? We manufacture products for a wide range of industries, but they’re often component parts of a much larger product, or they’re items with a very short shelf life, so to be making a retail ready product in an industry we knew little about was a very daunting prospect. However, the bike industry is largely a group of practical, enthusiastic people who understand that products aren’t picked off the trees in the carpark and that there are complex processes involved to get to a finished product. The feedback and guidance we’ve received from riders has been instrumental in helping develop the Rockstop products into what they are today. Our products have largely been developed hand-in-hand with the riders themselves – we’ve just facilitated it with our engineering knowledge and moulding infrastructure. What has the reaction to the product been like so far? We’ve had some great feedback from both professional riders and the local riding community. Singletrack Magazine put it to the test in 2019 and gave us some great feedback. The only minor gripe they found, we’d already fixed for our next production run! They actually rated it as one of the best all-rounders in their group test which, considering we were going against some of the most well known inserts in the market, we were more than happy with. Working with Extra has meant we’ve been able to get some great feedback from shops all round the country too which has been really positive; we’re looking forward to getting our products in the hands of even more riders now.

38 | August 2021

BB-AUG21-PG37-38.indd 38

What innovations in the industry are exciting you? Cycling and the need for cycling infrastructure around our towns and suburbs presents a lot of opportunities for manufacturing businesses like ourselves, the uptake in cycling over the last 18 months has brought it front and centre so it will be exciting to be involved in an industry which has thrived. It’d be impossible not to mention e-bikes – there’s been such a massive uptake of people riding them and the technology around e-MTBs is just getting better and better. We’re looking forward to seeing how it all develops in years to come and we’ll be there alongside it doing our best to keep people’s bikes safe. We’d like to expand in the impact protection area, into products which are not already available – we’re like happy nerds when presented with a puzzle! What are your plans for 2021 and beyond? Because riders like the e-bike Frameguard so much, we decided to launch the frameguard for carbon bikes which is now available. We’ve designed Frameguard so it’s removable and universally fitting for most bikes. On the future of Rockstop products, we’ve got a gravel insert ready for release and a skinny version of Frameguard for narrow, aluminium frames. And now that Rockstop has partnered with Extra UK, these products join a wide range of mountain bike parts and accessories available to retailers and dealers across the UK and Ireland. We feel that Extra absolutely understands where we’re coming from and where we want to go, and we’re very excited to be working with them in the coming years. n

IBD FOCUS

Celebrating our local bike shops BikeBiz catches up with the ACT to find out more about this year’s Local Bike Shop Day What can we expect from Local Bike Shop Day 2021? This year’s Local Bike Shop Day, on Saturday 28th August, once again falls at an ideal time to celebrate two key themes. Firstly, we will be focusing on targeting the number of kids that will be returning to schools; what better time than now to start encouraging the younger generation to start using an efficient, environmentally friendly and healthy mode of transport? With people remaining hesitant when using public transport at the moment, cycling provides the perfect solution for many parents to get both younger www.bikebiz.com

BB-AUG21-PG41-43.indd 41

and older children to school safely. Driving isn’t often the most sustainable choice, and Local Bike Shop Day may just be that extra bit of encouragement needed to make the decision to change from four wheels to two. Secondly, as an industry we need to work together to keep the nation cycling through autumn and beyond, in an attempt to maintain the record-high levels of cycling that we saw last year. It is now pivotal for the cycling industry to do what we can to show all these levels of cyclists that cycling is more than a lockdown fad, and that there are endless reasons to continue riding. IBD FOCUS

Following a survey completed by IBDs and key members of the cycling industry, there was a majority agreement that Local Bike Shop Day should be delayed to late summer, with the Saturday of August bank holiday weekend being the most popular day chosen. There are numerous industry initiatives ongoing, and these, alongside schemes that the ACT is promoting, such as Local Bike Shop Day and BikeIsBest, are now more important than ever in sustaining the levels in cycling across the UK. However, it is the bike shops themselves that have more engagement with consumers daily than any other cycling org or initiative, so let’s celebrate what they’re all about. By working together, the cycling community can convince not only the public of the importance of cycling, but also ensure that the Government is continuing to adjust the UK’s infrastructure to accommodate the high numbers of cyclists into autumn.

Thanks to supporters helping to raise awareness of Local Bike Shop Day across a variety of platforms, the day reached over 800,000 impressions, most of which were on consumer-facing channels. Given the success that Local Bike Shop Day has had thus-far, the ACT believes that it is vital to keep the momentum rolling and continue to encourage as many people as possible to get on their bikes whilst also supporting their local bike shops. Local Bike Shop Day 2021 is the ideal way to make this happen. At the time of writing, we’ve already seen an increase in shops signing up with 312 now listed as participating this year. We are hoping this will grow even further as we start to ramp up promotional activity and partners getting on board. By uniting the industry we can work together towards one of Local Bike Shop Day’s key aims – putting indie shops back at the heart of the UK’s towns and cities.

How much is the day expected to grow from previous years? Local Bike Shop Day has seen phenomenal increases in engagement year-on-year. The UK’s first ever event in 2018 took place on the 6th October and saw just over 90 shops taking part. The following year – 4th May 2019 – was again a success with over 150 local bike shops getting involved, a growth of 67% from the inaugural year, despite the terrible weather seen across most of the UK. In 2020, confusion and panic were rife as the UK was hit with a pandemic and multiple national lockdowns. Local Bike Shop Day had never been more important in celebrating the recent upturn in cycling and in drawing attention to all that local bike shops had done for us throughout the pandemic. As a result of this, 2020 saw the biggest growth yet, with a record number of cycling organisations and partners get involved, including the All Party Parliamentary Group for Cycling and Walking (APPGCW), BikeBiz, British Cycling, Cycle to Work Day, Cyclescheme, Cycling UK, Cytech, Freewheel, Insync, London Bike Show, Love to Ride, Raleigh UK, Sustrans, The Cycle Show and Transport for London. In addition to cycling organisations, the day was promoted by a variety of MPs and non-cycling organisations including Small Business Saturday and Indie Retail. A few well-known faces also got on board such as Jeremy Vine, Gail Porter and Sharron Davies.

Why should bike shops get involved? Local Bike Shop Day is a day organised for the industry, by the industry. It is the day for bike shops to showcase and promote the passion, knowledge and personalised service they offer to their local communities. It is an event that enables individual shops to be part of something bigger than themselves and, in so doing, to use Local Bike Shop Day to drive more footfall through their doors and the doors of other independent cycle shops around the country. In addition to the pride that IBDs experience on their dedicated day of celebration across the country, there are also additional incentives on offer for retailers to get involved! This year, Cyclescheme will once again be supporting Local Bike Shop Day by providing both consumer and trade prizes as well as a range of POS materials to send to bike shops and helping to spread the word of Local Bike Shop Day through their consumer facing digital channels which has a reach of c. 30,000 followers.

• Cyclescheme will also once again be gifting six lucky shops with £150 worth of vouchers to treat themselves and their staff to a night out as a special thank you to those shops engaging the most on social media • Give your customers the chance to win – Cyclescheme will also be giving four lucky customers who visited a participating shop and requested or redeemed a Cyclescheme certificate the chance to win a £250 cycling gift card What future plans/ambitions do you have for the next few years? Local Bike Shop Day initially took inspiration from other similar national events, such as Record Store Day and World Book Day. Record Store Day now sees bespoke records, products and services being designed exclusively for this annual event. Local Bike Shop Day has been following in these very successful footsteps, with many retailers now offering specific discounts, competitions and services to customers on the day in order to drive footfall into stores. In future years, we hope to see these initiatives grow further still, with more of Local Bike Shop Day’s supporters – both IBDs and suppliers – offering incentives to bike shops and customers, with the potential to create specific ranges of Local Bike Shop Day themed products that can help to spread the word of the distinctive day. The ACT works hard every year on behalf of the industry to drive sign ups and engagement among the cycling community and to spread the word to current and potential customers. With consistent perseverance and a growing support network, eventually Local Bike Shop Day will become an annual event that is recognised and celebrated by all communities across the UK. Following last year’s cycling boom, many have begun to recognise the importance of cycling and the countless benefits that it can bring for our health, wealth and environment. Local Bike Shop Day will play a key role in bringing this new-found cycling appreciation to extend beyond the bicycles themselves, and reach the hard-working retailers, mechanics, and employees of the nation’s local bike shops. n

Being light and made from durable, rust-proof materials, unlike a heavy pannier, it won’t spoil the fun of those looking to ride hard.

One of four gloves in the Bluegrass protective clothing range, the Prizma 3D MTB gloves make hard lines easier. This is thanks to their ergonomic shape and refined internal seam construction, helping keep your hands firmly on the bars without distractions. Perhaps the most defining feature of these gloves is the 3D TPR prisms which stick out on top of the glove to protect the knuckles and the top of the hand.

Renthal is a market leader in handlebar technology, offering bars in carbon and alloy. The Fatbar Lite 35 ticks all the boxes with an ample width, an optimised lightweight taper tube construction and four rise options. The Renthal Fatbar Lite 35 is the ultimate lightweight, trail-proof alloy handlebar.

High-end, high-performance gravel shoes from Bont. Stiff, comfortable, and excellently designed racing shoes for when you want maximum power transfer. Sharing many similarities with the famed Vaypor S, the Vaypor G’s bring Bont’s market leading technology into a shoe that’s made for riders with a passion for dirt.

The Fizik Artica X5 is the perfect winter MTB cycling shoe for warmth, comfort, protection, and performance riding in even the coldest, wettest conditions off-road. Constructed with a fully waterproof yet highly breathable membrane with a fleece-lined upper and an internal speed lace system that is easy to use with gloves.

A tough metal-reinforced polymer moulding that easily attaches to your e-bike to stop damage to the motor/battery casing and lower downtube. The impact of rock strikes around the crank area of the frame is absorbed and dispersed, instead of being able to crack, dent, or shatter your bike. Velcro attachments allow the Frameguard to be easily removed for maintenance.

Cycling for everyone! That’s been the philosophy at Lapierre for 70 years. And the Edge 3.7 is for anyone who wants to have their first experience on the trails. Lapierre’s know-how developed on high-end bikes is now available for all models in the range. Discover the joy of riding the trails, tackling your first descent, riding alone, with family or friends, all on a small budget.

The Z Hydro XC is a hydration backpack with a 2-litre water bladder designed for 2 to 3 hour rides. The water bladder is BPA-free guaranteed and is easy to clean thanks to the wide opening at the top. Boasting a large, main pocket, an expandable outer pocket for a jacket and two additional storage pockets, with one of those being soft for glasses or a smartphone.

Not everyone wants their bike to look like a pack mule, to them stealth is the name of the game and it doesn’t get more stealth than using a Fork Cork to stash your keys/cash/CO2 inflator/and anything else you can jam inside a steerer tube. Fits and removes in seconds whilst also being super secure and plugging that mud trap.

The Mantra Elite LSL is a trail ripping hardcore hardtail that can tear up the loam, slice through the slop or even take on a bike park. A 6061 aluminium frame is matched to our tried and tested LSL geometry to provide the ultimate ride. The Elite model brings a Marzocchi Bomber Z2 fork with 140mm of chundersmoothing travel, making light work of the roughest trails.

The Elevate pads are medium weight with excellent breathability that offer the protection you want for enduro and trail riding. They use D3O’s flexible LP1 viscoelastic pads for premium protection, wrapped in lightweight four-way stretch Cordura for incredible durability. Direct ventilation through the front of the pads help keep you cool, so you can keep your pads up while pedaling, and our extended over-the-thigh design minimises slippage.

The Cliqr Stem Cap Mount offers the most discrete and central mounting position for biking adventures. Replacing the existing bike’s stem cap with the lightweight and durable Cliqr mount. Cliqr uses a dual locking, fail-safe mechanism to mount almost any device in the most convenient position for you. Cliqr range is manufactured from glass-filled nylon due to its superior mechanical properties, light weight and durability.

The pure-bred party animal. The mixed wheel Patrol has a new haircut but is still down for anything and truly unapologetic when it comes to shredding trail. Being one of the longest standing bikes in the Transition line-up, it was the obvious choice to mix it up. Updated geometry to accommodate the 29in front/27.5in rear wheels and revised suspension tune might just make you ride all day and then all night.

The PU-coated stretch fabric and fleece lining of the close-fitting Castelli Pioggia 3 Shoe Cover keep it waterproof and warm, making it the perfect winter riding accessory. Its comfort credentials are strengthened by partial tape sealing, a rear-facing waterproof zip and a secure, silicone-lined cuff with hook and loop closure. However, this added protection never leads to compromises in aerodynamics.

What’s not to love about a comfortably fitting, fully waterproof jacket that packs down handily into its own integrated stuff sack? The multi-layer Sportful Hot Pack NoRain Jacket now has more rubberised sections for a smoother finish and better wind noise reduction. Meanwhile, the built-in stretch panels at the sides, shoulder and sleeves prevent it from feeling tight and restrictive.

Designed specifically for harsh weather conditions, these XLC overshoes offer excellent protection from the cold, rain and dirt. 2mm thick neoprene, lycra edging and a YKK zipper keeps the elements at bay. Rubberised, reinforced toe ends provide extended durability and ensure these overshoes will keep feet warm time and time again. Velcro fastening on the sole makes them a breeze to get on and off, too.

The Armour features inserts designed specifically to protect the back and sides, with shoulder shells also in place. Constructed from lightweight and stretchable open mesh, the Bluegrass Armour B&S is designed to achieve maximum breathability, ventilation and is quick to dry. Unlike some protection systems, the armour is also hydro-pack compatible; helping riders to stay hydrated and protected with ease.

Trail Skins Pro Tee is the most versatile torso protector in the Dainese range. Soft, removable Pro-Shape 2.0 protectors cover the shoulders, back and chest, tracing the rider’s movements at all stages of activity. The construction of the Pro-Shape 2.0 protectors is inspired by the geometry of auxetic materials present in nature that, following an impact or stress, expand in all directions simultaneously, increasing the area of coverage.

The HG Harashimaya Jacket has been designed and developed together with the athletes of the Canyon Factory Racing team to meet the needs of every rider. It’s made of a four-way elasticated tear-resistant fabric combined with a waterproof, highly breathable membrane, ensuring freedom of movement and extreme weather resistance. The adjustable hood is designed to be worn under your helmet in driving rain.

A perfect accompaniment for all season rides. It can be packed down easily and stowed away in a jersey pocket once the temperature picks up. A slightly raised collar provides added protection from cold winds. Designed with comfort and performance in mind, it has a dynamic fit which provides a snug fitting with stretch panels that move when you move.

The wind-resistant exterior shell features a waterproof, breathable liner, and a combination of PrimaLoft and Thinsulate XT-S insulation with anti-microbial fiber to keep you warm and dry when it counts. The fleeced interior features AGrid technology, which utilises a woven grid to hold heat. Reflective detailing and touchscreen technology help you to be seen, and stay in touch without slowing you down.
