The Rising Star in Anjuna

The former “Emissora de Goa” now “Akashvanni Ponnje” broadcast this beautiful song of Balduino Arajuo 60 years back which begins with these words:

“Supurlim oronnim, lamb rund xetam, sobhit ghoram, Thoim liplai tum, sobhit ganv Anjuna, Zolmolo thoim Padr Agnel Aiz kidd ani mui ditat argham,

Tantlo hanv ek kirkol, noman tuka kortam”.

(Amidst the little wastelands, green �ields and beautiful houses is hidden the picturesque village of Anjuna where Fr. Agnelo was born. Every living creature is thankful to him and I, an insigni�icant creature, is one of them).

Truly, the appreciation of Anjuna, expressed through this song comes alive even today. The tourists, the businessmen and a variety of people exhausted in their life go there to relax. We need to hold this village in high esteem because a number of wellknown families, famous men and women were born there. Devout and outstanding personalities brought fame to this village On 21 st January, 1869, yet another star rose in the skies of this village.

When this star appeared nobody imagined that, one day it would shine all over the world. This star was Fr. Agnelo whose 150 th birth anniversary we celebrated last year. God enriched him with many virtues. In order to disclose his force to today’s people, God made Agnelo an instrument in his hands. He filled him with his grace and made him a model for our times.

His parents gave him the name Agnelo. Agnelo’s grand-father had two brothers called Manuel and Agnelo. Both became priests. Agnelo’s parents gave these names to their two sons and they too became priests. But his mother affectionately called Agnelo Cherubim from his childhood, as we have heard. In

fact, Agnelo became a simple and pure boy like a Cherubim.

Right from his childhood Agnelo became a welldisciplined boy, respectful towards the elders, and devout in his life. He inspired others to do the same and is a model for today’s youth. His life is very meaningful for them. When he was a boy, parents of his peers looked upon him as a model for them. The aroma of his life would fascinate other children. Today too, we can see many students coming and praying at his tomb at Pilar Monastery during the exams. They say that Fr. Agnelo intercedes for them. We notice that he is an inspiration to them.

The last Portuguese Archbishop, Patriarch Jose Vieira Alvernaz wrote about him in 1961: “Fr. Agnelo belongs to our times. People who knew him are still alive. He had more or less the same problems that we have today. That is why his life is very meaningful for us today (Litterae Postulatoriae, No II, 2, August, 1961).

As Fr. Agnelo helped many people in their needs during his life time, he is a powerful intercessor for us before God. Let us pray that our Holy Mother the Church may recognize his intercession as early as possible and raise him to the honours of the altar.

Rosario Sequeira (Porvorim): My husband was suffering from kidney stones and developed kidney failure for which he had to undergo dialysis. He became very weak. I came to Pilar on 19 th November and prayed through the intercession of Ven. Fr. Agnelo. My husband was healed and he is completely alright now. I thank Fr. Agnelo for his intercession and pray for his sainthood.

Cirilo Rodrigues (Curtorim): My son had boils with an abscess on his forehead , doctor gave him a treatment and said that if he does not recover, he will have to undergo surgery. I came to Pilar and prayed, that he should recover without operation. My son was healed without any operation. Last year, I prayed for a job on the ship, on the same day I received a call and got a very good job on the ship. I thank Ven. Fr. Agnelo for his intercession.

Piedade Lucas (Sancoale): I got fever and swelling of legs with lot of pain. Doctors gave me medicines but I had no relief. A Sonography was done which showed a big fibroid and doctor said I had to be operated. I met three doctors and all three said I needed to undergo surgery. I was very sad and prayed through the intercession of Ven. Fr. Agnelo. I took his relic mud and applied it to my body and drank water mixed with it. After some days the swelling of my legs disappeared and when I met doctor, I was told that the fibroid had come to normal and I did not require surgery. I thank Ven. Fr. Agnelo for his powerful intercession and pray for his sainthood.

Eric Vaz (Chandor): I was not feeling well. After going to the doctor, I was told that I require heart surgery. I prayed without ceasing through the intercession of Ven. Fr. Agnelo. I was healed without any surgery. I thank Ven. Fr. Agnelo.

Jose Fernandes (Colva): While I was working on the ship, I prayed through intercession of Ven. Fr. Agnelo that I should get a promotion. My prayers were answered and I got a promotion. I thank Ven. Fr. Agnelo and pray for his sainthood.

Domnic Diniz (Palolem): I was suffering from kidney disease and doctor said I needed to undergo kidney surgery. I prayed through intercession of Ven. Fr. Agnelo that I should be healed without surgery. I was taken to the operation theatre and anaesthesia was given. Doctor saw on the computer monitor that my kidneys were fine and I did not require any surgery. I thank Ven. Fr. Agnelo and pray for his sainthood.

Prayer to obtain favours through Ven. Agnelo Almighty God, Our Heavenly Father, we gratefully acknowledge your plan for our salvation, even by working miracles through your chosen servant. We thank you for giving us your faithful servant, Fr. Agnelo, as an example of how to follow in the steps of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. With our whole heart, we pray that you may lead us through your Spirit to imitate his saintly life. Grant us also the favour we ask (mention the favour) as a sign that he now shares in the glory of our Risen Lord.

Prayer for the Canonization of Fr. Agnelo O God of infinite mercy, we humbly prostrate at Your feet, we beg of You, with whole hearted trust, that if it be Your Holy Will, and if it serves our salvation, grant Fr. Agnelo the honours of the Altar through the solemn declaration of Our Provident Mother, the Church. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
