Search Engine Optimisation is the science of increasing traffic to your website by discovering what potential clients are searching for. There is much advice to be found online as to the best way to approach this task but the simple fact remains that without the help of a professional company that has the in-depth knowledge, experience and resources with which to implement a coordinated plan, it is very difficult to succeed.

Written by Joe Shields The call came during a recent lecture given by Mr Meagher at the MacGill Summer School in Glenties, Co. Donegal. The title of the lecture was “A Republic of Justice and Equality - How Stands the Republic? “ “It will be a shame on all of us if in 2016 our young people are still forced to emigrate.” he stated. “Government has to do more to create the environment for job creation and calculated risks will need to be taken. It is better to take those risks than continue to export our youngest and best talent in the country,” he

“A Republic

of justice and equality”

Story continued from page one

“Now is the time to discuss what matters most to a nation - its people and the situation in which they live, work or in too many cases, try to exist without work. Now is the time to discuss the changes needed and to prepare for when, hopefully, the nation begins to emerge from this difficult period.” The SVP president concluded by saying, “There are no easy answers, but that is no reason not to commence the debate. We must learn the

lessons from the economic disaster caused by an unequal society.” The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SSVP) was founded in Sorbonne University, Paris, in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam, a 20 years old student, Inspired by the work and teachings of St Vincent de Paul. It began as a small group, which set about helping the poor and the oppressed and after a few years grew in numbers and spread to many

It’s just too hot!!

Written by Gerard Cullen

The weather has always been a national obsession in Ireland. I suppose since we are paddy last in Europe and on the doorstep to the Atlantic Ocean, it’s no surprise we talk about it all the time. Wind and rain always seem to spend their summer’s here with the odd bit of sunshine occasionally missing a flight and grudgingly staying for a day or two. But this year we were bestowed with a fully fledged heatwave, the hottest summer since God knows when. This July being the polar opposite of anything most of us remember, even when looking back through rose tinted sunglasses at previous good spells. It brings out the best and the worst in people with the moaners usually on day two exclaiming, “I didn’t get any sleep, tossing and turning all night “, Jesus, I know I’m lucky to have a job but I hate having to work in this” and the age old classic – “It’s just too hot!!Then we have the worshippers who strip off and become lobsters overnight and have no qualms about what their appearance inflicts on the rest of us. Although most Irish males manage to look like they are in pain, suffering from some pink blistery pandemic, never browning up to perfection like our Continental cousins. We pale into comparison with the Julio’s and Rico’s of mainland Europe with their toned, bronzed abs and pecs, glowing with sweat free skin. Then there is our fashion sense or non-sense, how we can still get it so wrong wearing so little is a feat in itself. If you went to any public beach during the sweltering sun-blessed few weeks, you would have witnessed the Irish male in a wildlife extravaganza, a strange new habitat in which to engage and explore. Read the italicised segment

below in a David Attenborough voiceover for maximum effect. “And now, after years of hibernation, we can finally see the male species, DUBLINER SCORCHIO. Three types emerge into the sunlight, all sweating profusely with a varying pinkie white pigment. Scorchio number one is in speedos, tattoos and gold jewellery. He zigzags through the hot sand like he is dodging landmines, whilst regularly re-adjusting his scrotum and all the time trying to maintain an effortlessly cool composure. Type 2 of this rare unseen mammal is camouflaged in a Manchester United jersey and Dublin GAA shorts with knobbly knees protruding, ending with a pair of Penney’s flipflops, it seems apprehensive of the water and retreats as it ebbs and flows around the flip-flops. Finally, Type 3 of this amazing SCORCHIO species lies still with a bulging beer belly and gorilla type chest hair, lounging like a lizard and wearing socks with sandals. This type doesn’t seem to do much at all. With the many offspring of the three types of species populating the terrain, procreation doesn’t seem to be a problem, possibly aided by the bared flesh of the female and copious amounts of the aphrodisiac, Dutch Gold lager. This species truly is a sight to behold. So the next time a heatwave of this magnitude (Sorry, you can stop reading like Mr Attenborough, he has now left the article) comes around, we will all probably have left this mortal coil, but have no doubt, no matter how much the human race will have evolved, DUBLINER SCORCHIO will still be alive and well on the beaches.

different countries. The Vincent De Paul has been in Ireland since 1844 and has a network of staff. Over 9,500 volunteers strongly commit to working for social justice. Kilkenny native Geoff Meagher was elected as the National President of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Ireland in 2012. Mr Meagher has been an active member of the SVP for over thirty years.

The Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Councillor Dermot Looney recently unveiled a plaque to commemorate the opening of the new Seán Keating Garden in the grounds of Rathfarnham Castle Park. Mayor Looney commented “I am delighted that the garden will be named in honour of one of Ireland’s most iconic artists. I would particularly like to thank Cllr. Paddy Cosgrave, the Chairperson and members of the Rathfarnham Area Committee for suggesting that the council name this garden in memory of Seán Keating. I would also like to acknowledge the support received from the members of the extended Keating Family who will be present at the official opening. Seán Keating resided locally here in the Rathfarnham area and it is appropriate that the garden is named after him for both the local connection but also for the combination of history, art and landscape that we find here in the grounds of Rathfarnham Castle Park. These themes were strongly embedded in the life and work of Seán Keating the artist.” The garden is located in what remains of the grounds of

Rathfarnham Castle demesne and within view of the splendid Rathfarnham Castle, a National Historic monument now under the care of the Office of Public Works. The OPW are currently implementing a programme of restoration fitting for a structure that has been part of our local and national history since the middle of the 16th Century. This new garden is modern in design and contrasts with the older Castle. The design

reflects the modernising of Ireland whilst respecting the Ireland of the past as well as the historic location within which it is located. The garden is a restful place with water and plants and stone from both modern and older times combining to provide an oasis in a busy world. A strong focus for the garden has been on setting a new standard for access, through the inclusion of many accessibility features throughout the garden.

As part of the recent Villages Initiative, South Dublin County Council has allocated funds for the development of designated villages within the county. The primary purpose of this fund is to drive initiatives which would result in an increase in footfall in the villages and thus drive economic development in the retail and tourism sectors in particular. Work with village based groups like the Rathfarnham Tidy Towns Committee has been on-going and the construction of this ornamental garden by South Dublin County Council is another positive step in the upgrading of the fabric of the Rathfarnham Castle landscape and nearby Rathfarnham Village with a particular focus on Walking Routes, Heritage Buildings/Features and Public Realm Focal Points. Mayor Looney concluded by saying “I hope users of the Seán Keating garden space will enjoy this pleasant and calming area in this historic setting of Rathfarnham for years to come.”

Building a new Republic – Let’s begin now

“This state is not the republic envisaged by those who wrote the Proclamation. They had a vision for a real republic – a republic of justice, equality and fairness – a republic for all the people of this island.”

Written by Phillip O’Shea

-Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD

Sinn Féin, president Gerry Adams TD, speaking at the MacGill Summer School in the Glenties, County Donegal said this state is “not the republic envisaged by those who wrote the Proclamation. They had a vision for a real republic – a republic of justice, equality and fairness – a republic for all the people of this island.” Teachta Adams described the Dáil as “a dysfunctional forum” whose “formal protocols were inherited with little real change from the London model. It operates in a time warp and in a bubble, immune at times to the harsh and unfair regime visited by the government on the citizens who elected it”. The Sinn Féin leader criticised Fine Gael and Labour who promised a democratic revolution but “instead they opted for cuts to public services and greater centralisation of power.” “Instead of creating a more effective, transparent and accountable democracy, the government moved to abolish the Seanad, cut the number of elected representatives in the Dáil and in local government, got rid of Údaras elections and centralised even more power and authority into its own hands.

“Instead of initiating real reform Fine Gael is power-grabbing and Labour is acquiescing.” “At the heart of the debate on the Seanad is the issue of equality of citizenship. Only one per cent of citizens have a vote in Seanad elections while others have multiple votes. That is why Sinn Féin will not support a proposal to retain the present Seanad. We will campaign for its abolition.” “A genuinely progressive government would have given the future of the Seanad to the Constitutional Convention for discussion.” “It would have considered the option of making the Seanad democratic and accountable and able to act as a meaningful check on the dominance of the Dáil. It chose not to.” Teachta Adams described the institutions of the state as “very partitionist”. “Moreover the institutions of this state, whether media or academia as well as the political elites are very partitionist. They have their backs to the border. While they are generally benign, policy makers knew little about the North and care even less. Their concern is to protect the interests of the establishment as they understand it.” Referring to the Good Friday Agreement Gerry

Adams said “we are all living in a post Good Friday Agreement Ireland. This is most obvious in the North, but nowhere are the equality safeguards or parity of esteem measures of the Good Friday Agreement reflected in this state, in its governance or the protections for citizens… The Good Friday Agreement also removed the Government of Ireland Act, under which the British government claimed sovereignty over the North, and provided for a poll on Irish unity.” “Such a poll will provide a unique opportunity for a real, inclusive and constructive debate on the future of Ireland. Yet the government in Dublin shies away from such a debate. It has no strategy to win unionists to embrace a united Ireland and until recent events forced the issue the government had no consistent or strategic engagement with the British government over matters arising from the Good Friday Agreement and subsequent agreements.” “If unionists saw a real commitment to equality by the Dublin government this would have a real and positive effect on those unionists who want to live in harmony with their neighbours. There is no design plan for reconciliation but we all

share responsibility to give leadership in spite of opposition and adversity. Perhaps the Civic Forum could be a vehicle for this?” The Sinn Féin President called on the government “to be fully engaged, as it is entitled and obliged to, in the North. Not in a threatening or interfering way but under the terms of the Good Friday and other agreements. And as sections of unionism, like others, adjust in a more pragmatic and positive way to the merits and advantages of cross- border cooperation, particularly on economic issues, we will see more progress.” The Sinn Féin leader called for the construction of a new republic “rooted in core democratic principles, shaped by the political, social and economic realities of today” and with a “commitment to the unity of Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter and the rejection of sectarianism… A republic that shares its wealth more equitably, looks after it’s aged and young, provides full rights for people with disabilities, liberates women and delivers the highest standards of public service.”

“REAL LOCAL CHAMPION” SCOOPS VIKING OFFICE MAKEOVER

Ann Joyce of Costello Flowers Dun Laoghaire, receiving her ‘office makeover’ from Michael Walby, director of leading office supplier Viking. Ann won the prize worth €2,000 in the recent Viking/Newstalk competition to find family businesses who give back to their local community. The Dun Laoghaire native, who

opened her doors back in 1991, was praised as “a real local champion, working flat out to promote local businesses and local people, and fearless in the face of the local county council officials.” Viking is celebrating 18 years of serving small and medium sized businesses across Ireland.

The State must face up to its responsibility to the survivors of Bethany Home Written by Phillip O’Shea The announcement by The Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, that survivors of Bethany Home would not be included in a redress scheme has been met with great anger and disappointment. Mr Shatter, speaking on RTE radio one recently stated that children who had been fostered out to inappropriate care were not the responsibility of either Bethany Home or of the State. Furthermore the role of the Home as a mother and baby home was another reason for its exclusion from the redress scheme. The minister proclaimed that because the Bethany Home survivors were not the same as the survivors of the Magdalene laundries, in that they were not sexually abused or forced to work for no pay that this justifies excluding them from an appropriate redress scheme. He went on to propose the allocation of a small amount of funding to erect a plaque for the 219 children of Bethany Home who were discovered in unmarked graves at Mount Jerome cemetery in 2010. This is highly inadequate and is adding insult to injury for the survivors and their families. As far back as 1939 newspapers printed stories about the unacceptable low level

of care at Bethany Home. There is no real reason to set criteria for hurt, such as sexual abuse or exploitation. The state must recognise, as any decent human being will, that those children were neglected, treated with brutality and without appropriate concern for their welfare or their rights. The minister’s argument merely focuses on the differences rather than addressing the simple facts of the case: a) the physical neglect b) the high death rate at the Home c) Its use as a detention facility and d) The activities of illegal adoptions. The only logical conclusion is that the State does not want the financial burden of compensating the survivors of Bethany Homes. Considering the financial burden they are prepared to off load onto the shoulders of ordinary people it seems quite petty that they will not accept their responsibility to those survivors. To suggest that it was a mother and baby home, is erroneous, the mothers did not bring their babies home. An inspection report from 1938 stated that Bethany Home was a Children’s Home which housed children up to 3 ½ years and in practice children up to 5 years had been kept there. The children from Bethany were moved

illegally across the border with Northern Ireland and many were illegally adopted to homes in the U.K. and the United States. It was also used by the courts as a place for the incarceration of women. The case of the Bethany Home raises questions about the sectarian nature of this country both past and present; the issue has in the main been neglected because it was viewed as a religious (protestant) problem and not a societal one. The Kennedy report carried out in 1970 stated that ‘Children other than Roman Catholics, who come before the courts are entrusted, through the local Gardaí, to the charge of the local pastor of their own denomination, who sees to it that they are placed in the care of suitable families or schools’. The powers afforded to institutions like Bethany Home were a violation of peoples legal and human rights. The State has a responsibility to face up the role it played in colluding and turning a blind eye when it came to the care and legal rights of the people who went through that home regardless of their level of suffering or of their religion

I like to call it the good counsel of the garden gate! When I was growing up in Wicklow in the sixties, my mother and the other women of the neighbourhood knew that a chat at their gates or over the garden fence, was good for them. It was the therapy of the women in the area. They might be caught mid chore of sweeping the path, mowing the lawn, or painting a wall, yet they always found time to talk. The ravages of stress might be evident on their faces, but countenances changed as the interaction progressed. They would discuss everything from what was the latest news and what it said in the papers to swapping domestic tips and health complaints. Who had the worse palpitations and what the doctor had prescribed at The Dispensary that morning! So and so is going through “The Change”! This always made me wonder what “The

Change” was? Was someone changing from a man into a woman? Or was someone good turning bad? Who was the latest Jackal and Hyde? At this point I would be told to run along and gather some sticks for the fire or, go inside to do my homework. They had their secrets to share. But they also had laughter. Great big belly laughs! The peculiar antics of ‘the childer’ or, the carry on of some local character. Who was going a bit heavy with the hair dye or wearing her skirts too short. How some Jack-the-lad was three sheets in the wind and taking the two sides of the boreen last Sunday after spending the whole day on a high stool in Blady O’ Blaahs! Lining the pockets of some publican, no doubt. Yes it was a bit gossipy, but never malicious. I think they mainly discussed everyone else’s misfortune, but in doing so realised that everyone

had their problems, and so weren’t alone with their own issues. And during this time worry was replaced by serenity, anger replaced by calm, torment replaced with a brief freedom. Bunches of fresh flowers and armfuls of vegetables, or perhaps a handful of free range eggs were exchanged over those devides. And everyone was in the one boat. Even though people did’nt have much in terms of money, it seemed the abundance of simplicity and genuine Christianity made up for any shortcomings. Some of those tete-e-tetes could last up to an hour. About the average length of time spent in therapy! And afterwards, in they would go to put the kettle on, mostly an awful lot happier in themselves, my mother usually humming a happy tune! And do you know what? It did’nt cost a penny. . Its good to talk.

Yet Another Banksy Artwork Goes ‘Missing’ “A number of attempts have been made over the past to deface the piece, most famously in 2012 by King Robbo who holds a rivalry with the elusive artist.”

A Banksy artwork ripped down from a north London street is to be auctioned, just months after another in the same borough was controversially sold for a reported £750,000. No Ball Games was removed from the side of a shop in Turnpike Lane, Tottenham Green, and will be sold next year by the Sincura Group - the company which arranged the sale of Slave Labour in May. The Sincura Group claims the street graffiti, which shows two children playing with a sign that reads No Ball Games, has been 'salvaged for renovation' and is now under their management. Sincura Group intends to sell the artwork, created by street artist Banksy in 2009, next year and in the meantime it has been 'gifted' to a local charity A statement on its website reads: 'A number of attempts have been made over the past to

deface the piece, most famously in 2012 by King Robbo who holds a rivalry with the elusive artist. With extensive building works taking place in the local vicinity, and further concerns upon its safety, the piece has been removed to be sensitively restored to its former glory.' The company sparked outrage among residents earlier this year when it announced it was selling Slave Labour, which depicts a young boy hunched over a sewing machine making Union Jack bunting. An unsuccessful campaign to return the 'symbol of local pride' to Wood Green was supported by Haringey Council, which now faces the prospect of a second battle. But the company insists it has committed no 'wrongdoing'. 'The Sincura Group do not condone any acts of wanton vandalism or other illegal activity, however after carrying out extensive due

diligence with regard the works' provenance and ownership we are entirely satisfied that there are no wrong-doings entered into and are happy to be representing the No Ball Games piece,' the statement added. No Ball Games will be one of three 'controversial headline pieces' to be sold at the auction. A spokesman for Haringey Borough Council told the

Haringey Independent that it is trying to contact the owners of the building to find out more information. In London Banksy art trails are a huge draw for tourists and special crack teams ensure his graffiti stays in top condition.

A new report offers hope of creating 2,800 jobs with the added annual economic impact of €200 million by recommending Dublin as the prime European location for large technological companies to set up operations. The report outlines how successive governments and IDA Ireland had previously persuaded a number of major global technology companies to locate initially manufacturing and subsequently business hub and research and development activities in Ireland. Dublin remains a key international hub for technology companies. It goes on to reveal that Dublin is currently a hotbed of tech innovation with more than 200 tech focused start-ups based in and around the city. The report entitled ‘Activating Dublin, The Best Place to Start,’

“The report comprehensively maps out the opportunities and challenges for turning good ideas into jobs.” was commissioned by Dublin Chamber of Commerce and Dublin City Council with the stated objective of generating growth and employment, increasing the number & quality of start-ups, and overall economic contribution of Dublin’s tech start-up community. The authors of the report believe that this can be achieved by the targeting of domestic and international entrepreneurs. John Moran, Secretary General of the Department of Finance and Chair of the group said, “The report confirms the huge potential in the tech startup community. The energy and excitement of the people working in this sector is unrivalled internationally. The key is not to try to take control from them. The objective of this report is to build upon these strengths and

develop a supportive strategy in place to make sure they can focus on developing their ideas, grow their business and create jobs.” Patrick King of Dublin Chamber of Commerce believes that the whole nation would reap the rewards of Dublin becoming an international technological hub. “What we want to is make sure that all of that is brought together and everyone is working together as one so Dublin can be not just the best in Ireland built the best internationally, that eventually will spin out to companies that will go to other parts of Ireland and really help the entire economy “, he stated. Philip Maguire, Dublin City Manager, said “This report comes at an opportune time for the city as we re-organise around a number of enterprise

functions coming back into the City Council. The integration of the Docklands, Enterprise Board and the Digital Hub as well as the recent Dublin Digital Master plan enables us to provide better coordination of our digital assets.” Minister of State for Research and Innovation, Sean Sherlock T.D. welcomed the report and said “The report comprehensively maps out the opportunities and challenges for turning good ideas into jobs. I believe this report is important for other regions as well in that it acts as blueprint for a way forward for those in the start-up community outside of Dublin.”

What Is Too Young To Be Online? By Fiona Delaney Since the creation of social media sites parents have been faced with the question, how young is too young? Over the last 13 years social media has gone from background noise to dominating most personal and professional sides of life, with most people these days having some sort of online presence it has become increasingly harder to deny the younger generation access to the World Wide Web. It may not shock you to know that 99% of teenagers use the internet quite frequently but what is rather shocking is that 54% of these teenagers have regular private conversations with online strangers, and around 27% of them have admitted to talking about sex with these online “friends”. The internet is a large, growing monster with chat rooms popping up and coming down in a matter of days, it’s hard to constantly keep track of what your searching yourself let alone what your teenage son or daughter are searching. In fact roughly around 51% of parents either don’t have or don’t know if they have any software on their computer to track what their teens are browsing online, it’s also made more difficult by the simple fact that these teens and tweens have grown up around the internet and computers. They even have there own online language that most parents don’t understand such as POS ‘Parents Over Shoulder’ or P911 ‘Parent Alert’ which are common terms used to warn their online companions to watch what they say. Its also been documented that 1 in 5 tweens and teens between the ages of 10 and 17 have been solicited for sex or have been approached on the internet in a one year period while a further 1 in 33 receive aggressive online messages which often

result in face to face meetings, money sent or given, sent mail or gifts. Its been reported that 42% of parents don’t regularly check what their child is browsing on the internet, which has lead to 70% of children coming across porn accidentally and a further 80% receiving inappropriate spam on a near daily basis. The statistics on the subject are quite overwhelming and shocking but what we must ask ourselves is, how do we protect our kids? Well, it’s hard to say in the age we live in with all iPhones, iPads, Playstations, and Xbox’s all having internet connections and the readily available free WIFI that’s in most cafés and public places we can’t possibly sit with them every time their online! So what can we do? Well, try to learn about the dangers of the internet for yourself and then sit down and talk to your child about them, help them set up their accounts and make it very clear that they are NOT to share any personal information online with anyone! You should also let them know that they can talk to you about what their doing online, but also try to keep an eye on what their doing without invading their privacy, try to find a happy medium, for example, check their browser history but don’t sign yourself into the Facebook account on a daily basis limit that to when your really concerned about them. Work with your teen when it comes to the internet don’t yell or get mad when they talk to someone they don’t know or come across porn just calmly let them know what you think they should do and hope that they will learn for themselves how to keep safe. If you would like to read up on internet safety just go to: www.internetsafety.ie or www.kidpower.org

Top Tips

Top internet privacy tips

Here are twelve essential points that everybody should know a concepts and practices in mind and you will be better able to g If you keep your Anti-Virus software up-to-date and remember the internet should be a safe and secure place.

1. There is no such thing as 100% privacy on the Internet.

You can take steps to lessen the intrusions into your privacy but there is no way to guarantee that nothing can be learned about you and your affairs. Learn to live with this reality and act accordingly.

Y a a d k

2. Like it or not, you have to trust somebody. Anything you do on the Internet has to go through numerous intermediaries, routers, networks, etc. Ultimately, you have to trust the security of your ISP and other services that you use. VPNs and proxy servers can increase your security but they are not foolproof.

3. Privacy comes at the cost of convenience. The more measures to increase privacy that you use, the more cumbersome using the Internet becomes. Locked doors are harder to use than open ones. The correct trade-off between privacy measures and convenience depends on how you use the Internet. If you like to live dangerously, you may need a lot of privacy measures. If you are a casual web surfer and send harmless emails, not so much. Choose the level of privacy appropriate to your Internet usage.

4. There are innumerable ways to spy on wireless or cell connections. There is no standard encryption that can’t be broken and deciphered but using a strong version of WPA encryption on your wireless router is better than not. Avoid using public hot-spots for private business.

5. Assume that all email that you send is public. If you must use email to send sensitive material, use some form of strong encryption. Send the encryption key to the recipient by some other means than email.

6. Deleted email is probably still there somewhere. You may delete an embarrassing or private email but it may very well still be on the email servers or on the other party’s computer.

he DSPCA recently announced details of a major new fund raising initiative the “DSPCA Great Irish Dog Walk”. The fundraiser will see the largest number of dogs ever gathered together in one location in Ireland. 5,000 dogs and their human families will “Stand up and Walk” in the Phoenix Park on 28th September 2013 to take part in the 3k walk. The DSPCA Great Irish Dog Walk is being organised as a family event to raise much needed funds for the charity which is Ireland’s largest and longest established animal welfare organisation. The DSPCA estimate there are currently over 5,000 animals neglected, starving or homeless at any one time in Dublin city alone. Funds raised from this event will help the DSPCA to assist these animals, who have no voice of their own. Commenting Brian Gillen, CEO, DSPCA, said “This is the first time a dog walking event of this scale will take place in Ireland. It has a dual purpose to raise funds to assist the DSPCA carry out its rescue and animal welfare services as well as highlighting and encouraging responsible pet ownership. The public have and continue to play a very important role in the work of the DSPCA whether it is through fund raising or raising the alarm by reporting animal neglect and cruelty cases”. The DSPCA is also hoping to attract a number of event sponsors and is pleased to announce that it is receiving support from Dubarry of Ireland. Commenting Michael Walsh, Marketing Director of Dubarry said, “We are proud to support this year’s Great Irish Dog Walk. Given Dubarry of Ireland’s proud outdoor and leisure affinity, we are very happy to support the work carried out by the DSPCA. Classic Car Show & Family Day Sunday 18th of August

About EB

DEBRA Ireland supports families who are living with an extremly painful condition known as EB. Children born with EB have little or no collagen causing their skin internally and externally to tear and blister at the slightest touch. It takes several hours every week to care and dress these painful wounds with the worst part being the excruciating pain that a parent must infict on their child. It is awful to expect parents to do this, which is why an EB Home Nursing Service is so important. We want to provide a service that will allow parents to be parents.

How you can help In 2013, the charity expanded the services it provides to families living with EB, by funding an EB Nurse Specialist who visits patients in their own homes, taking over the care of their wounds.

Templeogue College, Templeville Road, Dublin 6W .

In order to keep this service in place and expand in the future, the charity needs to raise an additional €90,000. DEBRA Ireland's EB Home Nursing Service will change the quality of life for many families who are struggling to live with the pain of EB.

All funds raised will go towards DEBRA Ireland's EB Home Nursing Service. Any support you could give to ensure the day is a great success would be much appreciated.

Entry:

€5 per person €15 per family (2 adults and 2 or more kids) Under 5s are free

CHY No: 8703

ick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: ‘Kick-Ass 2.’ After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation. When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and

Kick-Ass 2 (2013) Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy. Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire— leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes. Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to

make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

Planes (2013) an undercover federal agent. For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip. Working undercover as members of a narcotics syndicate, each man distrusts his partner as much as the criminals they have both been tasked to take down. When their attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions goes haywire, Trench and Stigman are suddenly disavowed by their superiors. Now that everyone wants them in jail or in the ground, the only person they can count on is the other. Unfortunately for their pursuers, when good guys spend years pretending to be bad, they pick up a few tricks along the way. 2 Guns is set for nationwide release on the 16th of August in selected cinemas all around Ireland. It is rated 15A.

A

Kick-Ass 2 is released on the 16th of August.

It’ll be interesting to see what Kick-Ass 2 does differently from the original Kick-Ass, which, while fairly well-received, was not a major success at the box office. Will Hit-Girl – who sort of stole the show the first time around – be the focus of the sequel, even more than she was in the comic book? I wouldn’t be surprised. But you can be guaranteed that there will be lots of laughs, fighting scenes and minors using obscene profanities. Sounds good,

2 Guns (2013)

cademy Award® winner Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg lead an all-star cast in 2 Guns, an explosive action film that tracks two operatives from competing bureaus who are forced on the run together. But there is a big problem with their unique alliance: Neither knows that the other is

right?! Guess we will have to wait and see.

P

lanes is an upcoming 2013 American 3D computer-animated adventure sports comedy film produced by DisneyToon Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is a spin-off of Pixar’s Cars franchise and the first film in the Planes trilogy. Dusty Crophopper, a small-town cropdusting plane, dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer, but he has two problems: he isn’t built for racing and he’s afraid of heights. So he receives help from a seasoned aviator named Skipper Riley to take on the defending champ of the villainous racing circuit named Ripslinger. Dusty’s courage is really put to the test when he aims to reach heights he never thought possible, giving the world inspiration to soar. In all cinemas from the 16th of August.

Canadian “Message in a Bottle” Girls Visit Ireland

The two Canadian girls behind the message in a bottle which washed up in Passage East, Co Waterford, last October, arrived in Ireland this week. They will spend the next week exploring Ireland, as guests of Tourism Ireland.

Last year, schoolboy Oisín Millea found the mystery message in a bottle, which had been tossed into the Atlantic Ocean in Canada in June 2004, by two twelve-year-old friends while on holiday in Grande Vallée, Québec. The girls included their first names – Charlaine Dalpé and Claudia Garneau – as well as a plea to contact them if the bottle was ever found. Tourism Ireland in Toronto tracked down the girls, now grown up, through both traditional and social media, and invited them to visit Ireland in this special year of

‘The Gathering Ireland’.

Oisín and his family visited Québec in July, as guests of Tourism Québec. Now, Tourism Ireland is returning the gesture – with Charlaine, Claudia and their partners enjoying a week-long holiday here, exploring Dublin, Cork and Waterford. When they are in Waterford next week, they will meet Oisín in his home town of Passage East. Their itinerary was designed by Fáilte Ireland. The wonderful story of the message in a bottle has been covered extensively by the media across Canada – including by the Montreal Gazette, the Huffington Post and CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “We are

delighted to welcome Claudia and Charlaine to Ireland and we wish them a really enjoyable holiday. This heartwarming story has been covered extensively by the media in Canada – providing fantastic, positive publicity about Ireland and the friendliness and hospitality for which we are renowned. That’s the type of publicity that money can’t buy.

“Over 4 million Canadians claim Irish ancestral links or affiliations with the island of Ireland and in the province of Québec alone, the census of 2006 showed that over 400,000 people identified themselves as being of Irish descent. So this is the perfect year for Claudia and Charlaine to visit Ireland and celebrate their newfound connections.”

New Google Phone Replaces Mega Pixels With Clear Pixels But is it all its cracked up to be?

A

fter years of racing to be the megapixel king, smartphone vendors have wised up and started paying attention to overall image quality. In particular, low-light performance has belatedly received lots of love. Most famously, Nokia dropped its smartphone camera resolution from 41MP to 8.7MP to allow for much larger 1.4-micron pixels and improved low-light performance — and then later realized that 7:1 supersampling would provide much of the same benefit in the Lumia 1020, while retaining astonishing resolving power. HTC followed suit with the even more radical Ultrapixel sensor in the HTC One. Featuring massive 4-micron pixels and industry-leading low-light performance, the camera only captures images at 4MP resolution. To provide improved low-light performance for the Moto X, Google decided to take a more

adventurous approach. It is attempting to maintain a relatively high resolution of 10MP, while improving low-light performance through an unusual sensor design. Instead of having all coloured pixels (traditionally two green, one red, and one blue in repeating blocks of four called a Bayer array), one pixel from each block is clear. This “RGBC” design, that Google calls “Clear Pixel” allows much more light to be captured in low-light situations.

has to be set to a lower exposure or a quarter of the image information is lost. If the exposure is kept low, then the color pixels don’t have very much information, increasing noise. If the exposure time is increased to get more information in the colour channels, then not only are the clear pixels blown out, but blooming can cause image quality issues with surrounding sensor sites. In addition, some of the color information in the image is lost by removing half of the green pixels.

The unspoken drawback of clear pixels:

These shortcomings explain why Sony, who pioneered the use of clear pixels in camera sensors with its 2012 “RGBW” (W for White) design, stopped using it because of image quality issues. More recently, sensor maker Aptina has introduced its Clarity Plus sensor technology, that like the Moto X uses a clear pixel in lieu of one of the green pixels in each block.

What the press releases and news stories about the technology don’t tell you is what a camera gives up by having 25% of its pixels ultra-sensitive to light and not color. In bright light, those clear (or as Sony calls them, white) pixels blow out way before the coloured pixels. That either means that the camera

Aptina believes it has overcome the inherent colour issues with the RGBC technology through clever design and on-board signal processing, while retaining the 3-4 decibel signal-to-noise ratio improvement provided by the clear pixels. It has been rumored that a version of the Aptina technology is in the Moto X, but Motorola has not confirmed it. Combining the relatively large 1.4-micron pixels — the Galaxy S4 features 1.1 micron pixels — of the X’s 10MP sensor with Google’s Clear Pixel technology, the Moto X will definitely be a great low-light camera. We’ll have to wait until the product ships to know if Motorola has finally cracked the code for successfully using a clear pixel without sacrificing overall image quality.

New Telescopic Contact Lens Gives Superhuman Vision A

n international team of researchers have created the first telescopic contact lens; a contact lens that, when it’s equipped, gives you the power to zoom your vision almost three times. Yes, this is the first ever example of a bionic eye that effectively gives you Superman-like eagle-eye vision. The main breakthrough is that this telescopic contact lens is just 1.17mm thick, allowing it to be comfortably worn. Other attempts at granting telescopic vision have included: a 4.4mm-thick contact lens (too thick for real-world use), telescopic spectacles (cumbersome and ugly), and most recently a telescopic lens implanted into the eye itself. The latter is currently the best option currently available, but it requires surgery and the image quality isn’t excellent. To create a 1.17mm-thick telescope, the researchers — led by Joseph Ford of UCSD and Eric Tremblay of EPFL — had to be rather creative. The light that will be magnified enters the edge of the contact lens, is bounced around four times inside the lens using patterned aluminium mirrors, and then beamed to the edge of the retina at the back of your eyeball. The mirrors magnify the image 2.8 times, but also correct for chromatic aberration, resulting in a surprisingly

high fidelity image. To switch between normal and telescopic vision, the central (normal, unmagnified) region of the contact lens has a polarizing filter in front of it — and then the wearer equips a pair of 3D TV spectacles. By switching the polarizing state of the spectacles (a pair of active, liquid crystal Samsung 3D specs in this case), the user can choose between normal and magnified vision. In case you were wondering, these solutions all primarily exist for one reason: To help restore sight to people with age-related macular degeneration. AMD damages the high-resolution fovea at the centre of the retina, but generally the low-resolution outer region (perifovea) still works. Without the fovea, people with AMD can’t make out fine details, such as type on a page. These telescopic spectacles, lenses, and implants focus light onto this outer region, giving people with AMD the ability to make out these details. The current telescopic contact lens is made out of PMMA, a gasimpermeable polymer that old, uncomfortable contact lenses used to be made of. To bring their lens to market, the researchers will need to switch over to rigid gas permeable (RGP) polymers, which modern, comfortable contact lenses are made from. While these

telescopic lenses are obviously intended for people who suffer from AMD, there’s nothing to prevent a healthy person from wearing them and achieving better-than-human (superhuman?) vision.

Franz Ferdinand - “Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action”

R

ight Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action is an upcoming release by Scottish group Franz Ferdinand and will be the band’s fourth studio album. This will be their first album in over 4 years. The band previewed many of their new tracks at live performances over 2012 and 2013. The album was recorded during 2013 at lead singer/ guitarists Alex Kapranos’ Scottish studio and Nick McCarthy’s Sausage Studios in London. Kapranos described the album direction as “forward” and revealed that the band decided to keep a low profile about things as their last album was “tainted” by misinformation prior to its release. Kapranos said that the album deals with “the idea of the cynic’s search for

optimism and the sceptic’s search for a manual crop up here and there. I’ve always liked the lead character in Alasdair Gray’s Lanark growing the hard scales to defend the soft inner-self from the world. Socially awkward asthmatic with a selfconsuming imagination. My 19-year-old self was electrified. Maybe the album is about how to shed those scales.” As for the album, “right words” is one of the best comeback tracks we have heard from a band in a long time and the other song we’ve heard “illumination” similarly reflects a return to the catchy sounds of their debut. Seems like they are trying to distance themselves from their last attempt at an electronic sound, and have returned to what they do best, catchy guitar

drivin music. ‘Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action’ comes with promises of adventure, daring and defiance - and a renewed embrace of pop sensibilities. It is to be released through Domino Records on 26 August 2013 in Ireland.

Artic Monkeys - “AM”

A

M is the upcoming fifth studio album by the English indie rock band Arctic Monkeys. Which is hard to believe as it only feels like they have been around for a couple of years.

I’ll just confess that now and get it out of the way. The ‘VU’ record, obviously,” he said. “Did we cop out? Yeah! Summat about it feels like this record is exactly where we should be right now. So it felt right to just initial it.”

The album features guest appearances by Josh Homme, Bill Ryder-Jones and Pete Thomas. It was produced by James Ford and co-produced by Ross Orton at Sage & Sound Recording in Los Angeles and Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California.

He has described the album as sounding “like a Dr Dre beat, but we’ve given it an Ike Turner bowl-cut and sent it galloping across the desert on a Stratocaster”, adding that it “sound less like four lads playing in a room this time. Essentially, that’s what it is, but if you can find a way that you can manipulate the instruments or the sounds to the point where it sounds a bit like a hip-hop beat that’d be boss in your car, then I think there’s something quite cool about that.”

In an interview frontman Alex Turner said that the album title was inspired by the Velvet Underground’s 1985 compilation album VU. “I actually stole it from the Velvet Underground,

If the songs that they played at Glastonbury are anything to go by, then this is going to be a spectacular album. From the songs we have heard I think it gives us a clear indication of what this record will sound like...scuzzy, spaced out, bluesy...a sort of companion piece to Humbug (their 3rd L.p release in 2009) but with more swagger perhaps. Track listing is, Do I Wanna Know?, R U Mine?, One for the Road, Arabella, I Want It All, No.1 Party Anthem, Mad Sounds, Fireside, Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?, Snap Out of It, Knee Socks, I Wanna Be Yours” It will be released on 9 September 2013.
