WELCOME TO CONTINUING EDUCATION! As we work diligently on the Winter 2019 edition of the Continuing Education catalog, we are also hard at work event planning, managing the catalog, navigating staff changes, prepping for the holidays and so much more. It’s that time of year when everything is happening at the same time. I am reminded of a favorite saying time and time again during this period – you can do anything, but you can’t do everything! With that in mind, and with our to-do lists growing each hour, we rarely take the time to take time for ourselves. When the chance comes that we do have

time for ourselves, I know I find myself wondering

Series The Music of the Vietnam War

For those who lived through the years of the Vietnam War, serving or at home, it is the songs that often make the connection to that turbulent time. The music of the Vietnam War was one of the most public arenas where this division occurred. By using the songs and the messages within them, this course can take a unique and I feel an interesting look at the Vietnam War, its contradictions, its division and conflicts. The music of any generation reflect the times, but like no other time in our history, the songs that compose the soundtrack to the Vietnam War not only mirrored the times, they changed them. 2/5, 2/12, 2/19 BSC NECE, Room 101 Fee: $35

Events are now taking place that, to some, are eerily reminiscent of previous periods of international tumult and revolution. This course will seek to provide historical context to today’s headlines by providing political theories from various experts throughout the years that explain how we arrived at this point. Among the areas we will examine are: The polorization of American politics, the retreat of democracy, the rise of China, Islamic fundamentalism, and the future of international power. The lecture will open each session with discussion to follow. 3/13, 3/20 BSC NECE, Room 304 Fee: $50

Management & Leadership Critical Thinking Skills

What’s the #1 skill executives look for in their employees? Critical thinking means understanding the problem, evaluating the evidence, and making logical and thoughtful decisions. It’s a skill to help your organization find smart solutions to tricky problems, avoid emotional thinking and mistakes, and work together more efficiently. 2/14 BSC NECE, Room 101 Fee: $139

Thu 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Instructor: Cindy Solberg Course ID: 5600121

Setting Goals and Reviewing Results

People are more engaged and strive for better results when they feel ownership of their work in both the process and the outcomes. Unfortunately, leaders fail to engage and reinforce this sense of ownership in performance management discussions. This course will show the positive effect of shifting the traditional role of planner and evaluator from the leader to a shared responsibility between leader and employee. 1/23 BSC NECE, Room 101 Fee: $169

Wed 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM Instructor: Dot Frank Course ID: 5600034

The 5 Choices to Extraordinary Productivity

The barrage of information coming at us from multiple sources (texts, tweets, email and more) is overwhelming and distracting. The sheer volume of information threatens our individual and collective ability to think clearly and make wise decisions about what is important. FranklinCovey’s The 5 Choices to Extraordinary Productivity. Why? Because it dramatically increases our ability to achieve our most important outcomes, both personally and professionally. Supported by science and years of experience, The 5 Choices will facilitate a measurable increase in productivity, while providing a renewed sense of engagement and accomplishment. 4/23 BSC NECE, Room 101 Fee: $279

Tue 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Instructor: John Sandbakken Course ID: 5600055

Engaging and Retaining Talent Equivalency

Research tells us that employee engagement is the primary enabler of the successful execution of any business strategy and no one impacts the state of engagement and retention more than an employee’s immediate leader. This course provides leaders with a model for determining what drives each individual’s engagement as well as methods for proactively engaging and retaining talent. Participants learn how to conduct “engagement conversations” and “retention conversations”. They explore ways to recognize people and use no-cost “everyday engagers” to create an engaging environment. 3/22 BSC NECE, Room 103 Fee: $169

Fri 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM Instructor: Dot Frank Course ID: 5600083

Project Management Project Management Essentials for the Unofficial Project Manager

FranklinCovey’s Project Management Essentials for the Unofficial Project Manager will help participants consistently complete projects successfully by teaching them to implement a disciplined process to execute projects and to master informal authority. Project management isn’t just about managing logistics and hoping the project team is ready to play to win. The skills of “informal authority” are more important than ever before, so team members are inspired to contribute to the project’s success! 1/17 BSC NECE, Room 101 Fee: $279
