Welcome We are kicking off our winter catalog with our featured instructor:

ANN VADNIE It’s not hard to figure out why OLLI courses taught by Ann Vadnie at Bismarck State College are filling to capacity. The retired middle school English teacher’s classroom is a relaxed learning environment. She knows everyone’s name and offers refreshments. “People take classes together and become lifelong friends,” said Vadnie. Ann is passionate about continuing to grow OLLI membership and make it more accessible and attractive to current and prospective members. Her in-depth research, which she calls a labor of love, her humor, and the fact that she encourages questions while she is teaching all contribute to her large following. Joyce Hinmen, a retired educator of 40 years, has been part of OLLI for more than five years. She enjoys that the series are in-depth, but said that she’s busy so she appreciates the single lectures. About Vadnie, she said, “She’s one of my favorites. I give her an A+. The instructors are witty. OLLI is no-pressure learning with no preparation and no tests.”

Thank you Ann – we appreciate your

involvement and contributions to OLLI @ BSC!

SERIES Thomas Jefferson the Writer

Thomas Jefferson never intended to be a revolutionary and a statesman. He wanted to be a scientific farmer and a man of letters. Events overtook him, but Jefferson still managed to write 26,000 magnificent letters and an American classic, Notes on the State of Virginia. Clay will talk about Jefferson the Writer--how and when he wrote, with what materials and technology; what he thought about literature; his use of the English language, including his innovations; his prose style; and some of his favorite books. 3/16 Tue 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium, Room 304 Instructor: Clay Jenkinson Fee: $25 Course ID: 7070034

What are some of the driving forces for change and what might the future hold? There will be time for discussion about agriculture and how farming has changed. 3/30 Tue 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Room 101 Instructor: Mark Holkup Fee: $15 Course ID: 7070021

The Geographical Space that became the United States

During a speech at the United States Air Force Academy, a British officer said, “Americans that believe their history began in 1492 have never been to Mesa Verde.” Mesa Verde, located at the four corners of Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, holds hundreds of “cliff dwellings” that housed thousands of inhabitants who farmed the mesa tops with agricultural products unknown to Europeans. This area, home to the Early Pueblo people, was abandoned because of drought or war or both, two hundred years before Columbus stepped foot in the New World. Mesa Verde is but one location among the dozens of cultural centers that dotted what was to become the United States. In this class, Dr. Skogen will provide an overview of American history before 1492. One doesn’t have to go to Europe to marvel at structures built a thousand years ago. 4/29 Thu 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium, Room 304 Instructor: Larry Skogen, Ph.D Fee: $25 Course ID: 7070027

Improving Social Skills Through Literature: Mindful Reading

Psychology meets literature! The first class will discuss concepts of mindfulness with a brief exercise and explore the connection of emotional intelligence and reading diverse fiction. The second class will explore mindful reading of diverse fiction and the experiences of others through shared dialogue. The instructor will specifically highlight the following fiction: The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich, The Grass Dancer by Susan Power, and Flight by Sherman Alexie. Students will benefit from learning ways to build social skills such as empathy and learn about mindfulness techniques. 1/21 & 1/28 Thu 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Room 101 Instructor: Charlotte Williams Fee: $15 Course ID: 7040016

Theodore Roosevelt

Come and explore the days of North Dakota’s adopted son, Theodore Roosevelt. After a personal tragedy, Theodore will throw himself into the adventurous life of a cowboy in the Badlands. For the next few years, he will experience everything from cattle roundups to arresting thieves to a possible shoot-out on the streets of Medora. Although his stay was brief, he would later say, “I would never have been President if it had not been for my experiences in North Dakota.” 2/9, 2/16 & 2/23 Tue 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium, Room 304 Instructor: Perry Hornbacher, Ph.D Fee: $25 Course ID: 7040017

“The strongest feature of the class is Perry’s enthusiasm of the subject matter; He makes any topic interesting and is so knowledgeable.” – mavis jundt, olli member
