BISMARCKSTATE.EDU/CONTINUINGEDUCATION

WELCOME TO CONTINUING EDUCATION! To borrow some wise words from BSC’s president, Dr. Larry Skogen, “at BSC we are rallied around our brand, beyond. It’s a word that holds the promise of individual pursuits. It contains all the potential of the people who work here; it represents the success of our students and the excellence of our events and outreach. Beyond is a place and it is potential and it is an expectation. At BSC we’ll go above and beyond to help you achieve it.” Continuing Education’s mission is to be an extension of BSC - to help people reach beyond in non-traditional ways through classes that are “non-credit” for fun or for personal enrichment. This spring’s catalog is a great way for you, your family and your friends to do just that. From great opportunities to learn about retirement, new careers, cooking and STEM education, along with a line-up of humanities activities (through our OLLI program) we have an ever changing list of opportunities for everyone to reach their beyond. We hope you take some time, in the beautiful weather that is to come, to try one of our classes. BSC is a beautiful place to be in the spring and the summer, even though things are a little quieter when most of our students are gone for the summer. Again, as Dr. Skogen said, it’s “a place bursting with energy” and we can’t wait to share it with you!

Creating Indian Homelands: A History of Indian Reservations

Indian reservations are home to tribal people ruled by tribal governments. In short, reservations are Native American homelands. They didn’t start out that way. Originally, reservations were a stopgap measure between Indians in full tribal relations and the transition from their complete assimilation into American society. Assaults on Indian cultures and the government’s relentless efforts to divest Indians of their lands put the reservations under tremendous pressure. However, reservations are now testament to the resilience of Native people. This class will cover the history of the reservation system and the eventual survival of Indian cultures in these homelands. 7/16 • Tue 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium Room 304 Instructor: Larry Skogen Fee: $20 Course #7070008

Ride the Rails on the Orphan Trains

Series

This course will take you through the interesting history surrounding the Orphan Train Movement. How was it organized and by whom? You will learn about organizations who began the process of “saving street children” in some of America’s largest cities by taking them by rail to other more rural areas. One of the most educational parts of the class will be the stories. Some stories will come from the founders and from agents of the organizations. Family members who heard their family members tell about the experience will share what they know. Also included will be first-person recollections from the actual individuals who rode on the Orphan Trains. 5/2 - 5/9 (2xs) • Thu 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM BSC NECE, Room 101 Instructor: Ann Vadnie Fee: $35 Course #7040005

WWI Music and Images

The use of music and posters of WWI offers a unique perspective to better reflect and interpret and experience the attitude of the day. By using the images of the times expressed through posters and to hear songs such as “I Didn’t Raise My Boy to be a Soldier” to patriotic calls for support such as “Over There” along with dozens of other songs like “How Ya Gonna Keep ‘em Down on the Farm (After They’ve Seen Paree)?” is a way to experience the events as close to firsthand as possible. 5/16, 5/23, 5/30 (3xs) • Thu 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Room 103 Fee: $35
