The Missouri Valley Chamber Orchestra performs a series of concerts throughout the season. Though the setting may not be the Met, the sounds are grand enough to make you feel like you are there. Local musicians entertain at local bars, clubs, pubs and coffee houses throughout the week. There is no shortage of local talent, and many venues showcase it.
With several major dance studios in town, Bismarck-Mandan is certainly kept en pointe when it comes to dance. Northern Plains Dance produces various performances throughout the year, from timeless classics like “The Nutcracker” to the more contemporary and avant garde in their “Choreographers’ Showcase.” Dance studios throughout the area teach toddlers through adults. If ballroom is more in step with your style, numerous dance clubs offer opportunities to foxtrot, two-step and swing. The high schools have championship-level dance teams performing around the country.
From clay to paint and any artistic expression in between, Bismarck-Mandan has much to offer for visual appeal. The Bismarck Art and Galleries Association features exhibits from local, regional and national artists. The Mandan Art Association also hosts exhibits each spring. Art classes are available through local art schools, such as THEO Art School, teaching to all ages and abilities. If less formal is where your artistic eye wanders, a variety of do-ityourself ceramic and scrap booking studios offer creative opportunities no matter your skill level. An Art Alley was opened in downtown Bismarck in the summer of 2016. Through the work of the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan class, North Dakota artists were commissioned to paint murals in the alley between Fifth Street and Sixth Street, parallel to Main Avenue and Broadway Avenue.
With theater, dance and art, one might think that is enough to keep everyone content, but Bismarck-Mandan doesn’t stop there. Mandan is where the west begins, and each Fourth of July, they prove this with one of the largest and oldest rodeos around. Other western-style events happen throughout the year, from high school rodeo to pageants. Bismarck-Mandan is a community that spans from cowboy boots to ballet shoes.
