This year we are pleased to be hosting a fully operational Medieval Village, open to the public, thanks to the “Company of Chivalry”. You will be welcome to watch the company perform demonstrations, ask them questions, join in with them and become part of living history. On the day we hope to offer a selection from the following …

• • • • • •

Coin stamping Knights display tents Cloth dyeing Wittering Cooking display Working medieval kitchen

• • • • •

Pole lathe Archery display Weapons displays Armour display Sewing and embroidery

The “Company of Chivalry” was formed in 1988 by a group of people from all walks of life who have the love of Medieval England in common. Their aim is to recreate the culture and technology of English society in the second half of the fourteenth century. They are not just another battle orientated society but one just as interested in the social and practical aspects of our predecessors’ lives, the events they undertake attempt to mirror this twofold aim. Their reputation as a good representation of the fourteenth century has enabled them to work for the likes of Cadw, English Heritage, and Scottish Castles. They also provide several exhibitions for local Museums across the southwest as well as filming for the BBC, HTV and even Hollywood!

Living History Living history is probably the most important aspect of all medieval re-enactment societies. It enables people to sample all walks of life from serf to nobleman, to see long-forgotten crafts and skills come to life before their eyes, and hopefully change their ideas on what it means to be medieval. Unlike many societies, the company differentiates between living history and military re-enactment, allowing them to use one to enhance the other, thereby providing everyone with an ongoing medieval experience throughout the day. As a company, their structured membership enables them to demonstrate how people worked together across class and other social divides, each member contributing their practical skills - acting or craft related – thereby enhancing the overall presentation.

After you’ve brought your family along to experience medieval life, why not dump the kids with granny for the evening and come and experience medieval night life at the FREE ‘Knight’ of Fun from 7pm. See inside back cover of this programme for more details.

The Chew Valley Village Agents Programme% The Village Agents work with Parish Councils and existing local organisations to help identify individuals who could be assisted by this service. They provide access to information and services through a series of regular surgeries or drop in sessions in Community Buildings across the Chew Valley. The Agents also make home visits and help to develop a network of contacts to meet the needs of local communities. They signpost key services including support for health, transport, finance, police and fire services as well as social networks. Village Agents, Denise Perrin and Karen Lyne are delighted to announce that funding has been secured to continue the project into 2012 from Lloyds TSB, Foundation for England and Wales. The Foundation’s aim is to support projects that deliver lasting changes and meet individual needs. Denise says. “The scrutiny panel had to be convinced that the work we do supports individuals within the community and we were able to tell them how successful that has been so far. It has been a nail biting time waiting to hear the outcome of our application as we did not want to have to pull the plugs at such a critical time.” It is very easy for organisations that are having budgets cut, to centre their services within the towns and cities and Denise and Karen are determined that residents of the Chew Valley are not left out. “There are opportunities for local people to have the support they need to keep them safely, securely and comfortably in their own homes for as long as possible and we want to ensure that our rural communities get a fair allocation of placements within those schemes” For further information about the Village Agent project, call 01275 333700.

STOWEY SUTTON PARISH COUNCIL Is pleased to support the BISHOP SUTTON FUN DAY Currently there are SIX vacancies for Councillors, so if you are interested in being a Councillor please either contact one of the Councillors or the Clerk, or come along to one of the monthly meetings – on the first Wednesday of each month in the Methodist Hall at 7.30pm. Your Councillors: Chairman:

Keith Betton

Vice Chairman: Bob Brewer

Councillors: John Knibbs

Keith Tatham

Tony Thornhill

Clerk: Sue Heathman T:O1275 333328 e: clerk@stoweysuttonpc.org EVER WONDERED WHAT A COUNCILLOR DOES? Most people’s impression of what a Councillor does is that they just attend council meetings and nothing could be further from the truth. The duties and pleasure, of being a local Councillor are many and varied, however it is the ordinary day to day contact with local people in their own community that is the most important part of being a Councillor. Listening: One of the most important tasks of a Parish Councillor is listening to and understanding the views of people in their community. Many public bodies or organisations acknowledge this is the hardest information for them to capture and they in turn use the skills and local knowledge of the Parish Council for advice to assist and inform their services.

Meetings: A Councillor agrees to attend all meetings (as is reasonably possible) to which he or she is summoned. In Stowey Sutton Parish Council this only requires one meeting of full Council a month, usually on the first Wednesday. Notices of meetings and agendas are posted on Village notice boards so why not come along and see the Council in action? Representation: Parish Councils also need representation at other local government meetings or on local bodies/organisations and Councillors may be asked to serve on certain groups or attend functions on behalf of the parish council. Councillors act as ambassadors for their community. They represent the voice of their community as a whole, whilst being aware of and considerate to, specific minority needs Extra skills: Councillors will draw on their own skills and experiences and it is the sharing of these skills that makes a strong team. Councillors working as a team will need to deal with employment issues, budgeting, asset management, staff management, project management or grant funding and probably lots more if they are creative and involved. Accounts must be kept and whilst the clerk (or Responsible Financial Officer) will be employed to carry out this duty, Councillors together as a team are responsible for the financial decisions made and implemented. A clerk is employed to advise and seek advice on behalf of Councillors to assist them in their decisions. Councillors are there to consider the information gathered and make a group decision on all matters. No individual Councillor is responsible for any single decision. This is democracy at its best. A Parish Council is the collective voice of its community, your community. Local people dealing with local issues.

% The Labyrinth Restaurant is located in the garden room of the old manor house, which still maintains the feel & the ambience of the natural environment outside and far reaching views of the stunning Chew Valley. Looking out you can see a box labyrinth, planted to mark the millennium following in the tradition of formal box parterres in grand houses of the 18th century. A labyrinth is not to be confused with a maze. A maze is a complex planned deceit where a labyrinth is a journey of discovery that leads to an exciting & rewarding experience. The Labyrinth’s food is uncomplicated yet varied, using fresh, seasonal ingredients. We believe that your choice should not be limited simply because you have different dietary requirements. As all of our food is cooked fresh to order, we are able to adjust our dishes & accommodate any special dietary requirements. We strive to cook only the finest foods, sourced as locally as possible & prepared here in the kitchen at Winford Manor. The Labyrinth’s aim is for delicious simplicity. The simplest traditional food cooked amazingly & served in abundance in beautifully peaceful surroundings.
