Elgar Introduction and Allegro Op.47 Mozart Eine kleine Nachtmusik K. 525 Tippett Concerto for Double String Orchestra This programme explores three of the most enduring pieces for String Orchestra in the repertoire. Both the Elgar and Tippett find distinctive and innovative ways of revisiting a baroque style Concerto-Grosso and pay homage to Handel in particular. However, characteristically Elgar finds ample opportunity to weave sumptuous English folk-like melodies throughout his work and Tippett even manages a nod to Beethoven within his intricate and well-knit textures. The Mozart, of course, needs little introduction and metaphorically greets us here as a familiar, welcome and jocular old friend.
