Dieng Plateau is a marshy plateau that forms the floor of a caldera complex on the Dieng Volcanic Complex near Wonosobo, Central Java, Indonesia. Referred to as “Dieng� by Indonesians, it sits at 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) above sea level, far from major population centres.


The name “Dieng” comes from Di Hyang which means “Abode of the Gods”. Part of General Sudirman’s guerilla campaign during the Indonesian War of Independence took place in the area.

Tempe Kemul


In Wonosobo tempe kemul usually sold in the street (street food) just like traditional meatball and noodles. But sometimes it’s sold by its own.

It is a kind of snack made of fried soybean-cake covered with wheat. In Javanese kemul means ‘blanket’. This snack better served warm.


Soto Golak


this food you can find only in Wadaslintagn Traditional Market

It’s a traditional soup from Wadaslintang. It’s a unique beef soup. Its uniqueness comes from the way it’s served which is put together with geblek as substitution for sticky rice (kupat, lontong)


Bakso Sapi


It’s a famous traditional meat ball, and also sol in almost every part of the country.

You can find it as a street food to high class restaurant dish, because it’s very popular among Indonesian people


Mie Ayam


This is a noodle with chicken topping and special dressing served with vegetable and pangsit or meatball

Just like the traditional meatball, this food is also easy to find in almost every street in dieng-wonosobo


Geblek


This dish usually sold along with other food, but in some particular place people will sell it by its own

Is a side-dish for some heavy food in Wonosobo, just like ongklok and soto golak, made of tapioca flour which has rough texture along with the rubbery beef


Sayur Lombok Ijo


As a side-dish, it is more likely as a sauce, sayur krecek, and used as a complement dish

It’s usually sold by the inns and they also serve along with tempe bacem, gudeg, tongkol fish, etc


Kripik Jamur & Kentang


It’s a popular snack , but in this case the chips are home industry production with simple packaging

snack can be bought in snack corner or if you want the cheaper one you can get it in farm market


Opak


You can easily find opak at snack corner or straight to the snack center at kalibeber, wonosobo

It’s made of cassava and kucai (grass-like vegetable) and considered as snack


Mie Ongklok


This noodle can be easily found in almost every part of Wonosobo, whether in the street-food seller or a fancy restaurant. Some of them are very famous just like one in Pak Mus in the down town in front of the church.

It’s a traditional food from Wonosobo. Not like any other noodle which has water as its gravy, Mie ongkok has very thick gravy made from tapioca flour and peanut sauce (from beef satai). Beside its gravy, Mie Ongkok has beef satai too as the side-dish.


Sate Jamur


Not many of people sell Sate Jamur, you can only find it at Wonosobo downtown in front of the church just beside the Mie Ongklok seller and around 2 in the afternoon until late evening

It’s a traditional food from Wonosobo. The inventor of this food is Bapak and Ibu Nomi (that’s how people call them). The special recipe from them is that the sate, which is usually using meat, replaced with mushroom. So this food is really recommended for vegetarian. It has really special mushroom with peanut sauce taste and very delicious


Sate Kretek


There are only two sate kretek seller , first one is in the center Inn in kretek and the other one is on Jl. Rumah sakit umum Wonosobo.

To hear the word ‘sate’ is familiar, but there’s something different with this sate kretek. This sate made of local chicken and not like any other sate, this has gravy with it. Compare to any other sate, sate kretek is a little more expensive. One plate for example can cost Rp 19.000,-.


Nasi Jagung


You can only find Nasi Jagung to be sold in Pasar Pagi Wonosobo at 6-8 am, located at the northern of a market near the police office, with reasonable price.

The word ‘nasi jagung’ sounds pretty odd, what would it be like? Nasi jagung is a mix between a rice and corn, proceed somehow until it tastes incredibly smooth. There’s barely people sell this kind of food nowadays.


Purwaceng


Purwaceng is usually be sold per sachet or in a box contains 25 sachets, or as a drink. There’s a lot of purwaceng seller in Dieng and Wonosobo, one of the famous one is pak hamid which is located in sabuk alu wonosobo.

It’s a traditional tonic that can give a warm effect to the body. Purwaceng can only be found in dieng and a little expensive (about Rp 5.000,- for a cup). Not only good for health, purwaceng can also be used for Viagra, based on the scientist its also good for men energy drink.


Teh Tambi


It’s easy to find this tea because it’s sold in almost every small and street shop in dieng and wonosotbo.

Is a traditional tea in dieng. It has a special taste compare to any other tea, and will taste better if served warm and sweet.


Ronde


Ronde can easily be found, because it’s sold in the street.

It’s a traditional drink that can give a warm effect to the body, with ginger water and a mixture of sticky rice and peanut and sugar palm fruit. It’s one of the most favorite snacks in a cold temperature.


Carica


Carica is usually sold in a can or a bottle and can be found in the snack corner. Two most famous carica are Carica Sanda and Carica Podeng Jaya

It’s an iconic fruit of Wonosobo. It’s a fruit from dieng, a mountain papaya which has yellowish color and sweet taste.


Es Cincau


It’s usually sold around the market in the afternoon from 10am to 4pm only.

This refreshing drink made of brown sugar, green cincau, and pearl porridge. It has a unique taste


Es Dawet Ketan


It’s sold around the market and crowded place such as the downtown.

This cold drink is made of dawet and ketan hitam combined with coconut milk. It has a refreshing and unique taste.


Sagon


Not like mie ongklok, sagon can only be found at center market of wonosobo on the 3rd floor and the famous one is bu Ning’s.

Is one of Wonosobo traditional food. It’s made of ketan flour and scraped of coconut with a round shape and a concave in it’s middle, baked on top of the fired charcoal


Cenil Lopis


It can only be found at central market of wonosobo around brunch time

Is a popular snack which has various of colors made of tapioca flour. Usually it’s served along with scraped coconut and Javanese sugar sauce


Bintangsakti

He has photography and writing skill by autodidact whether from books or digital media or by coming to the experts. Bintang –his nickname- is a senior student at Mercu Buana University majoring in graphic design making the Culinary of Dieng Plateau as his last task. Bintang whom his hobby is photography , travelling, and culinary tour has been learning photography since he was in 2nd semester. There was a time when the campus introduced him to a photography club, and since then he made a photography as part of his life. Some of the photography types he is into, such as landscape, culinary, fashion, human interest, etc. Not only does photography, he also likes to read comic book, blog, websites, magazine, and novel. Culinary of Dieng Plateau is a media to show his photography skill to make amazing culinary photograph and human interest just like in this book.
