have been learnt in the two months as an intern trainee at Nesma & Partners, we will show the training program and the supervisors of the training and field supervisors, and the work that has been done during this week and the information that has been learnt and taught.

ABOUT THE TRAINING COMPANY ď‚Ą Nesma and partners contracting Co. Ltd., an engineering

and construction company, is part of the Nesma Group. It has been a contributor to Saudi Arabia’s industrial and infrastructure sectors since 1981 with reliable, multidimensional construction services. Currently, Nesma and Partners is a recognized leader in the fields of oil and gas, petrochemicals, and power and water sectors. In addition to its role within a leading company responsible for major construction work in the Kingdom and the wider Gulf region, Nesma and Partners has established itself as the contractor of choice for an array of esteemed clients.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The project is General Hospital consisted of 300 beds, only for the National Guard employees and their relatives, the Ministry of National Guard has designed and planned the project and hired Dar Al-Handasah as the consultant expert and as a third party. 



The project has three main zones which are:



The hospital zone: containing the podium and medical tower, mosque and an administration building.



The residential zone: containing the villa duplexes, the apartments, the bachelor buildings, commercial center, recreational center, child center, mosque and administration building.



The services zone: containing the chillers, gas station, mechanical operations, and workers resident.

TRAINING PROGRAM 

Every student has been assigned to an engineer to be supervised by and to set the schedule of training and the program.

I was assigned to Eng. Mohammed Attia – Senior project engineer. Eng. Attia is assigned on managing the residential zone.

WALLS AND CEILING STRUCTURE, INSULATION AND FINISHING.

WALLS Gypsum board system consists of three main elements:  Metal Framing  Insulation

 Gypsum/Cement boards.

METAL FRAMING Framing has primary structural elements:  Runner: which is the track that holds the wall onto the ground and to attach

the Studs to it.

 Stud: is the vertical support for the wall, and it comes in a variety of widths.

The studs end up at top contained by the DHT.

 DHT: Distortion Head Track, which is the track that is fixed on the concrete

roof and contains the studs and keeps them in order, yet the studs aren’t fixed on the DHT in case if a distortion occurs to the concrete roof, the gypsum walls will not be damaged.

 Noggins: are the horizontal support for the studs preventing any bending or

distortion, also used to hold electric elements such as plugs and keys.

The spacing between each stud and each noggin is provided by MADA standards to achieve the best results of the gypsum wall system.

BACKING SYSTEM

ď‚Ą Due to the lightweight

of the gypsum walls, any weight that could be applied on the walls must be considered and apply backing for it to prevent cracking or total damage to the walls, i.e. shower mixer.

WALL INSULATION 

There are two similar types of insulation: 

Rockwool



Glasswool



The insulation of the drywall system used is the Rockwool insulation



The visual difference between Rockwool and Glasswool is that the Rockwool is browner.

BOARD TYPES

PLASTERBOARD TYPES There are six kinds of Plasterboards depending on its use, there is:  Regular Board.

 Impact Board.  Shaft Board.  Moisture Board.  Fire Board.  Fire and Moisture

Board.

 Regular Board is used where standard level of fire,

acoustics and structural properties are desired.

PLASTERBOARD TYPES

 Impact Board used in areas subject to crowd pressure

and impact damage such as corridors and circulation areas in residential, hospitals, educational institutions, airports etc.

 Shaft Board has high level of Fire and Moisture resistant

properties and is intended to be used in interior core of the buildings for shaft wall systems.

PLASTERBOARD TYPES



Moisture Board higher level of Moisture resistance as compared to Regular Plasterboard and is thus used for dry wall partitions where higher level of moisture exposure is expected such as kitchen, washroom, swimming pool, sauna etc.



Fire Board has a higher level of Fire resistance as compared to Regular Plasterboard and is thus used for dry wall partitions with high requirements for fire resistance.



Fire and Moisture Board is high performance plasterboard designed to perform in the interiors with high humidity and high requirements for fire resistance.

PROCEM AND CEILING TILES ď‚Ą

Cement Board is a lightweight cement board It can be used in areas requiring high impact resistance (e.g. Corridors), wet area (e.g. washroom, kitchen, and sauna) as well as an underlayment for tiles, floor & roof. And it can be used for both exterior and interior application.

ď‚Ą

Ceiling Tiles are a combination of Plasterboard, PVC lamination on the face, and PET aluminized foils on the back. It comes in various thickness and patterns to be used in different applications and usages.

CEILING INSTALLATION Traditional Metal Suspended Ceiling System [Regular Plasterboard]

FINISHING ď‚Ą The technical way of

finishing the gypsum wall is to drill the boards into the framing system, then welding the boards by joint tape, then finishing up by the joint compound above the tape and the screw openings.

FINISHING JOINTS

 Joint Tape is used to reinforcing drywall joints.  Multiuse Jointing Compound is used for giving a smooth finish to the joints.

 Cement Jointing Compound is used for jointing and finishing of PROCEM cement board.  Fire Sealant is used as a joint seal in drywall systems and through penetration fire stop

systems.

FINISHING RENDER

 Thin Coat Render It is a single layer smooth-coat render of grey-white color intended for

hand processing.  Hand Applied Render is for projects that require versatile thicknesses of renders within

small areas. It is used for creating 5-30 mm thick layers.  Machine Render is for covering big areas using plastering machines. And it’s designed to have

higher thicknesses and handle more weight. And it has a higher application period which makes the Machine Render perfect for creating layers starting from 6mm over a large area.

FINISHING PLASTER

 Standard Plaster is gypsum molding powder product for interiors. It is used for molding of

decorations, cornices, repair works, and for modeling. Standard Plaster comes in a wide range of setting time options including (5-15; 7-21; 15-45 mins) of initial and final setting time.

 French Plaster is a special decorative molding gypsum plaster for interiors and exteriors. It

is used for molding of decorations, cornices, repair works, and for modeling.

 French Adhesive is a special gypsum product for interiors and exteriors. It is used for

adhering of decorations and cornices to the wall and for special cladded walls where Plasterboards are glued to the wall.

 The system of pre-cast façade is used and

attached to the concrete structure, also the gypsum wall system is used on the interior side of the precast walls.

FLOORING TYPES AND INSTALLATION

TILES The tiles are installed in two ways: ď‚Ą High-level difference where

white sand and cement past mixture is used. Watering each installation spot a time.

ď‚Ą Low-level difference is

installed by using the adhesive mixture.

ď‚Ą It is important to consider the

color of the mixture under natural stone tiles (Marble and Granite) to prevent tiles color changing due to its absorption properties.

WET AREA PREPARATION ď‚Ą The steps for flooring a wet area is by 1.finishing up the cement floor 2.closing the

meeting angle between the floor and the walls by chamfered cement 3.starting the primer 4.water insulation and testing. After that a layer of adhesive mixture and the tiles installation.

FLOOR LEVELING ď‚Ą Adjusting the exact level of the floor can be done using the laser measure or Bubble Leveler. ď‚Ą The concrete floor can be done evenly by the Concrete Trowel Machine or some call it (the

Helicopter) to make sure the floor is smooth and on level.

SELF-LEVEL FLOORING 

This type of flooring is used in the patient rooms and in the operation rooms and few other spaces where the Vinyl-like flooring will be installed.



The method of applying this type of floor is by using multiple tools in different steps of preparation which are:



Self-leveling cement flooring compound: Is the compound used and mixed with water and poured onto the wanted floor.



Self-leveling Scraper: Is the tool used to spread the cement self-leveling mix over the space.



Floor Spike roller: Is the tool used to empty the self-leveling mix out of trapped air and to ensure the leveling of the compound.

FLOOR MODIFICATION 

There are probabilities of having some problems with the self-leveling preparation, one of the main and most probable cases of happening is having uneven or detached surface due to the air below the cement layer. Or just a mistake with the floor level.



The modification of the cement floor could be done by scratching the surface using the vacuum machine for slight modification in case of not having an even surface



Or chipping the cement floor if air is trapped under the cement layer or to adjust the floor level.

ROLLED RUBBER FLOOR This kind of floor is normally used to prevent heavy impact on the floor such as in gyms.

The installation of the Rolled Rubber floor is simple and doesn’t take a lot of effort:  Measuring the space required.  Planning the best layout for using the most out of one roll

according to its width.  Gluing the rolls onto the floor.  Cutting excessed pieces off the rolls.

 Installing the material wanted above the rubber rolls.

FLOOR PROTECTION As any kind of floor has been installed, a different construction work is still ongoing and some may cause damage to the floors, so a protection is surly needed, especially expensive ones such as marble and granite. Here is the way for protecting the flooring: 

Cleaning the required floor.



Pouring water on the floor and keeping it wet.



Spreading plastic rolls over the wet floor to stick to it.



Spreading Burlap over the plastic sheets.



Scattering gypsum over the burlap.



Spraying water on the gypsum and leave it to harden.

SPECIALTY WORK MEDICAL AREA

SPECIALTY CONSTRUCTION WORK  In a medical building there are number of elements which requires a special way of

finishing, we learnt what is needed and how to implement them in construction.  In this section of the report we’ll be covering: 

X-ray rooms.



Electrical rooms.



Patients rooms.



Operation rooms.



Services.



Mechanical rooms.

X-RAY ROOM 

In the x-ray room, special devices are used and has special effects where the room must be fully equipped for this purpose.



The Lead material is used to prevent excessed rays from getting out to surrounded spaces and causing harm to other people. Its way of installation is by: 

setting a grid steel structure for the gypsum walls.



installing double boards on the exterior side and single normal board on the interior side, and no rockwool insulation needed.



The interior walls are then painted by glue to hold the lead panels.



Lead panels are then installed by screws vertically with overlapping between each panel and the other.



Lead ends in the room are bent to prevent penetration, and a double skirting panel is installed to reinforce the jointing with the floor.



The screws on the lead panels are covered by heating small lead squares over them to prevent the reflection of the rays.

ELECTRIC ROOMS ď‚Ą In such large building as the National Guard Hospital, the managing of the wiring and

networking must be fully organized to troubleshoot and fix easily, a system of steel bridges is traveling throughout the building’s spaces and floors supplying network for the required spaces and reaching the servers in the communication/network rooms where the power supply is provided.

PATIENTS ROOM 

Patient rooms has special requirements such as the supplies needed for the rooms, finishing and medical precautions.



The supplies required for patient room are: 

Oxygen and gases supply.



Bed electric supply.



Nurse center calling supply.



Network supply (phone/com).



Room sanitary plumbing supply.

PATIENTS ROOM ď‚Ą The finishing used in the

patient’s room is vinyllike flooring which is processed to have no toxic emissions and not absorbing or transporting any dangerous materials, and easy to clean. The walls will be painted with normal paint that is environment friendly.

OPERATION ROOM ď‚Ą Is where it must be the

cleanest area of all and prevent any bacteria access from one space to another. There are a lot of considerations in an operation room as shown in the ceiling plan above.

SERVICES KITCHEN ď‚Ą

The kitchen has no special treatment in hospital other than keeping it clean and a well-sealed storage, in this project the storage system is chamber fridges that comes in panels and boards then assembled onsite by the subcontractor.

SERVICES LAUNDRY ď‚Ą While it has a great

load of work and machinery it also has to deal with great water processing and drainage. The space should be equipped for the sizes and piping for laundry equipment.

SERVICES WASTE WASTE IS LOCATED UNDERGROUND WHERE ALL STORIES’ WASTE ARE COLLECTED CLEANLY AWAY FROM USERS.

MECHANICAL ROOMS ď‚Ą There are multiple mechanical rooms located in the basement providing different

mechanical services.

 There are the air cooling machines, gases machines‌ etc. and each machine needs its

own set such as concrete pad, open ceiling level and so.

CURTAIN WALL ELEMENTS AND INSTALLATION

CURTAIN WALL ELEMENTS  The curtain walls in this project are many

and in different sizes and places, the façades of the medical tower are mostly C.W. and the installation is going through different stages of inspection and review.

While some places in the façades are solid, they require a different way of handling.

 There are main basic elements all Curtain

walls must have which are: 

first step, and there are two kinds of Mullions: 

Void mullions.

waterproofing

AS THE PROJECT REACHES THE TILING IN SOME BUILDINGS, THE REQUIRED FLOOR NEEDS TO BE ORDERED AND SHIPPED FROM OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY THEREFORE, IT IS NECESSARY TO ORDER THE CORRECT AND ACCURATE SIZES OF TILES AND THRESHOLDS AS BUILT MEASURES, AND TO CREATE THE DETAILED DRAWINGS AND NUMBERINGS OF THE TILES, THEN APPROVED BY THE PROJECT MANAGER. THIS OPERATION IS CALLED TAKE-OFF,WHICH I HAVE CONTRIBUTED IN DOING FOR THE NONMEDICAL BUILDINGS.

TAKE-OFF 

As the project reaches the tiling in some buildings, the required floor needs to be ordered and shipped from outside the country therefore, it is necessary to order the correct and accurate sizes of tiles and thresholds as built measures, and to create the detailed drawings and numberings of the tiles, then approved by the Project Manager. This operation is called Take-off, which I have contributed in doing for the non-medical buildings.



The take-off steps are: 

Defining what will be tiled throughout the (flooring drawings) and selecting what needs to be measured.



Going down the site to take exact measurements as built.



Taking the measurements and adjusting the final layout design of the tiles.



Deciding the division of the tiles by floor drawings.



Naming the sizes and types of tiles and putting them on a list (Threads, Risers, Threshold, tiles… etc.)



Defining the quantities needed.



Applying the cutting list to Project Manager for approval.

TAKE-OFF DATA AND DESIGN

In this process, the work is always supervised directly by Eng. Mohammed Attia the senior project engineer. We worked on 8 Duplex villas, 6 Apartment buildings, Mosque, Child Center, Administration, 6 Bachelor apartment buildings.

IN NESMA & PARTNERS LTD. IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONTROL THE QUALITY OF THE WORK DONE BY THE COMPANY, THERE IS NO WORK THAT CAN BE DELIVERED TO THE CONSULTANT WITHOUT ASSURING THAT IT WILL BE ACCEPTED

BY MORE THAN 90%.

QUALITY CONTROL DEPARTMENT

INSPECTION REQUEST (IR) The procedure of the QC work is as follows: 

The finished work is highlighted in the layouts and by the site engineer (civil, Electrical, Mechanical) and sent to the QC engineer with along with a filled paper of work specifications, this request is called internal inspection request (IR).



The QC engineer receives the request and checks the specifications requested in the project as the consultant would evaluate and accept based on them.



The QC engineer goes to targeted site for inspection and comments to correct the errors and finally gives the ok.



The Succeeded internal inspection is taken by the Qc engineer and sends the external (IR) to the consultant.



The consultant goes down the site with the QC engineer for inspection and finally approves.

KINDS OF INSPECTION

 We had the opportunity to go with the QC engineer; Eng. Mahmoud Dakkour and he

showed us how to inspect different kinds of work and approve them.  Precast installation inspection.  Windows inspection.  Curtain wall inspection.  Insulation inspection.

PRECAST INSTALLATION INSPECTION  When inspecting a precast installation, we first review the drawings of the façades and

the assigned steel angles for each precast panel attached to concrete.

PRECAST INSTALLATION INSPECTION  Second, we inspect the alignment of the precast panels and the spacing between them, and if

the panels are straight as required or curved due to wrong way of lifting the panels.  Finally, if the inspection was approved, the external IR will be submitted to the consultant.

CURTAIN WALL INSPECTION  As mentioned earlier, the curtain wall

elements are inspected one at a time, the Mullions and steel angles, then the transoms, and the waterproofing will be inspected with the glass at last.

INSULATION INSPECTION 

Inspecting the insulation is very important to prevent any possible mistakes that could be fatal.



There are two kinds of insulations that has been done in this project:





Rolled Insulation



Liquid Insulation

The inspection comes in two stages first is inspecting the installation and once they have been installed, a water test must be applied to check for any leaks, the insulation work is rejected once there is any sign of leakage and that is by: 1- Checking the water level 2Checking the ceiling under the insulated floor if wet.

ï‚¡ External inspection by the consultant for the liquid insulation before and after the test.

INSULATION INSPECTION

FORMS THERE ARE MULTIPLE FORMS FOR ANY ACTION IN THE CONSTRUCTION WORK BY DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS

NONCONFORMANCE & CORRECTIVE ACTION REPORT THIS FORM IS USED WHEN THERE IS WORK THAT IS NOT BEING DONE THE WAY IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE.

MEP CLEARANCE FORM ï‚¡

This form is used when the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing work is clear for the Civil work to proceed.

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI) ï‚¡

This form is used when a certain work requires more clarification by the consultant.

SITE CLARIFICATION REQUEST ï‚¡

This form is used when a certain work needs to be changed than what the drawings imply and requests for clarification to prevent work conflict.

THIS DEPARTMENT IS MEANT TO REGISTER AND FOLLOW UP WITH THE EFFICIENCY OF PROJECT WORK AND COST CONTROL. THE EFFICIENCY OF WORK IS FOLLOWED UP BY USING THE LEAN SYSTEM OF EFFICIENCY.

SCHEDULING COST CONTROL DEPARTMENT (SCC)

• Scheduling the efficiency, progress and cost for Fire Alarm work. • The LEAN system follows up daily with the foremen.
