We Take Daubers for Granted
I recently got a wonderful e-mail (at bingo@earthlink.net) from Frannie Tompkins. She wrote: “Dear Bob, we take daubers for granted. I would like to know more about daubers. I remember the days BEFORE daubers when we had thick cards with sliding windows…and before that…when we had cards we marked with kernels of corn. See what you can find out.”
Thanks, Frannie. I too remember the days when my grandmother used to mark her cards with kernels of corn. One night, someone bumped her table and sent the corn flying. I was ten at the time. I remember hearing my grandmother use words I had never heard before!
Frannie, when I lived in Las Vegas I used to go to an amazing place called the Gambler’s General Store. After finding the store on the Internet, I called them. NOTE: I am obligated to point out that I got only information from them, for this article. I got no other reward…not even a lousy dauber!
I talked to a wonderful woman named Wendy. She also remembers the days before modern-day daubers. She told me that the kind of daubers we use today were first introduced about 35 years ago and you can call them a DAUBER or a DABBER. It’s funny, some people even say: “You DAB with a DAUBER.” Figure that out. Whatever you call them, they now come in a dazzling array of colors and designs.
“We sell a ton of them,” Wendy told me. “Some people buy special colors to represent their school or organization.”
She also said that the things that go along with Bingo, like the bags and buttons and all the other stuff are big sellers.
When was the last time you went to a Bingo game and saw someone with a special holder (usually made of felt-like cloth) that held enough daubers to start a store? For many, going to Bingo is more than an event, it’s a pageant.
And, I have to add something I like very much; packs of what look like playing cards but are actually 75 numbered cards—one for each of the Bingo numbers. Wendy says that these are becoming popular on long bus rides where people board a bus to go to some faroff Bingo venue, such as a major casino. They play along the way and the packs or cards are very convenient.
By the way, red and blue daubers may be the best sellers, but I get yellow ones to pre-mark patterns, such as the LETTER X. Thanks, Wendy, for your information on daubers.
Next time, I am going to start a contest to honor the nation’s favorite Bingo caller. E-mail me: bingo@earthlink.net.

* Make ice cubes out of punch when you are entertaining. I like to make different combinations, which can be adapted for adult and child parties. One that I like very much is to make ice cubes from red fruit punch and then float them in lemonade. As the cubes melt, the mixture turns pinky-orange. — I.F. in Missouri
* Wash bath towels in cold water. It preserves color and still cleans them well. Add a clean, dry bath towel to smaller dryer loads to speed up drying time.
* Turn down the maximum temperature on your family’s water heater. You will do two things: One is to avoid accidental scalding, which is especially important if you have young children or seniors in your house. The other is to lower your electric bill, because the water heater will not have to work as hard to keep that big tank of water so hot. — T.D. in New Mexico
* Keep a few bandanas handy in cold weather. They can be used as a mouth/face cover to keep your nose from freezing. They are easy to store in a pocket, and easy to put on and remove.

That Love
A gift from God to share with due respect it brings forth life and peace of mindman’s immortality is within reach.
The freedomto serve others, to make people feel they belong to the universe; that someone cares, it asks nothingTo express himself, his need for love, his dependence on others; to belong in the universe; to achieve his needs without being a slave. Love listens, that it may speak. Love gives, that sacrifice may take place. Love is freedom, it leads to eternal life.

March 8th

Hi everybody. I’m Otis and I’m kinda sad. Its a little gloomy here at Bingo Bugle headquarters. Well, I miss my friend Maggie. We didn’t always get along great, but we always got along. I never had to beg for treats, she’d always do that & I’d get one too. Maggie, I miss you. Thanks for being my friend.
