The Wizard of Menlo Park wasn’t the first man to strap an engine to a velocipede. That brainy milestone belongs to an American inventor named Sylvester Roper, who did it in 1867. In 1885, Gottlieb Daimler’s Reitwagen brought gasoline internal combustion to the race with a mighty roar. MURDOCK RISERS: Built Tough for Serious Riding

Murdock risers feature investment-cast steel top clamps and lower threaded bases connected by two 1-inch O.D. x 0.120” wall seamless 4130 chromoly tubes. After TIG welding the finished unit is hand polished and triple chrome or matte black plated for style and durability. The threaded bases on Murdock risers are on 3.5-inch centers to fit most stock and aftermarket H-D triple trees with removable bar clamps. Murdock riser’s one-piece handlebar clamp is spaced to accept most stock H-D speedo and tach brackets. Two 1/2-13 grade-8 bolts are included for easy installation. Available only for 1” handlebars.

Two inches of rear offset may not sound like a lot, but it’s enough to cure back discomfort after four or five hundred miles in the saddle. GORDO RISERS

Built for springers, 49mm H-D forks and fat aftermarket front ends Gordo gives late-model H-D owners a clean, beefy option for installing 1-inch O.D. handlebars. Each investment-cast, hand-polished chromoly steel riser features a hollow cross-section instead of a threaded base so included 1/2-13 Allen cap hardware can be used for mounting to springers or top trees. American architect, furniture crafter and pioneer of 20th century style Charles Eames once famously observed that recognizing need is the primary condition for good design. The need for a range of motorcycle seats that don’t look like an over-stuffed couch in grandma’s rumpus room was the inspiration for our solo and bolt-on seats for custom choppers and Harley-Davidsons. Simple and unobtrusive in design. Manufactured for quality, comfort and style. Not because there’s anything bad about stock seats. Rather because there’s simply not much good. Biltwell solo seats for custom bikes are hand-crafted using heavy-gauge pans of stamped steel. Satin black electroplated after shaping and deburring for appearance and surface durability, every Biltwell solo seat features a heavy-duty hand-stitched vinyl cover over molded polyurethane foam. If you prefer custom leatherwork and upholstery, every Biltwell solo seat is also available raw. Our bolt-on seats for select H-D Sportsters and Dynas boast the same cover construction and foam technology as our solo seats, but are crafted on rugged yet lightweight vacuum-formed ABS pans. BANANA SEAT

Every year we spearhead a motorcycle adventure for co-workers and friends. On last summer’s juggernaut our band of bikeriders blazed a trail from Biltwell HQ in Temecula to the High Sierras in NorCal, then on to southern Oregon and back through San Francisco and down the Golden State’s Pacific Coast. When they were finished, the fun seekers on Biltwell’s Endless Summer crossed 11 days off the calendar and ticked 2,200 miles on the odometer, with several men and at least one woman setting a new personal best for good times. Going places and doing things is a recipe for happiness, and motorcycles are the best way yet to make memories that last a lifetime.

Given the impresario’s status as an iconoclast, Andy Warhol was probably talking about his silkscreened soup cans. The truth is, motorcycles beg for customizing the way visionaries demand the spotlight. Had he been a garage builder and not a cultural icon, the original King of Pop might have said stock bikes were like Mona Lisa on the head of a pin. Worthy of praise, but invisible to the naked eye. Isn’t it surprising the artist who wanted to be a machine never mused with motorcycles? In the age of mass-produced one-of-a-kinds he pioneered, we think Warhol would have excelled at it. FOOT PEGS

When you consider the role your feet play in the safe operation of your motorcycle, our obsession with pegs is almost justified. At the premium end of the Biltwell range you’ll find pegs like our Sanderson and Mushman models. Both styles feature investment-cast stainless-steel pegs with adjustable chromoly clevises for a look that calls back to custom chopping’s glory days. El Diablo Run ¡motos con amigos! In 2006, company co-founders Bill Bryant and Harold McGruther led a small band of bikeriders from Biltwell headquarters in Temecula, California, to San Felipe in Baja, Mexico. Since that first freakout hell ride and after six more just like it, the El Diablo Run has become a minor touchstone in modern motorcycle lore. To commemorate all the debauchery that has transpired since their maiden voyage, in 2017 the business partners and friends published a book about their misadventures. Here’s an excerpt from that weighty tome…

Two-thousand-seventeen marked the seventh running of the devils, with well over a thousand hell raisers motoring to Mexico for a long weekend on the Sea of Cortez. As at every EDR before it, Ruben’s Campo in San Felipe was Forward Operating Base for all the sun-drenched stupidity our livers could endure. Instead of riding to Ensenada on Baja’s west coast day two, however, we stayed in our little drinking town with a fishing problem for three nights to more thoroughly enjoy all of San Felipe’s sleazy charms. Some of the more popular diversions in this sleepy hollow include the live nude review at Iguana Club, shirtless ping pong at Bar Miramar, and of course billiards at the dive bar where Han Solo himself landed on the cover of the National Enquirer after allegedly discharging his blaster on some local ladies during a marathon bender. The Harrison Ford bar as it’s known today displays a four-foot-tall blowup of that tabloid cover on its wall like a badge of honor.

Princess Leia’s old man might have had the time of his life that night, but Mexican paparazzi got the last laugh. If you’re the star of a dozen Hollywood blockbusters, you fly a private plane to San Felipe to sink your stinger into forbidden fruit. Tall tales are the bricks that build motorsport lore. This is one of our favorites. After making history in 1967 by becoming the first—and only—American to win a Formula 1 Gran Prix in an Americanmade car, racing legend Dan Gurney and his Eagle Mk1 could have flown into the sunset on red, white and blue wings. Instead, the gifted aerodynamicist and relentless competitor set his sights on the ‘68 GP season with more innovations in his arsenal. Round eight of the F1 season that year was on Germany’s diabolical Nürburgring—14 miles of serpentine tarmac loathsomely nicknamed “Green Hell” by Gurney nemesis and three-time champ Jackie Stewart. Being all too familiar with the laser sting of rain on his face at 200 miles per hour, and sensing no relief from the downpour flooding every turn, Gurney pulled a full-face helmet from his bag of tricks, one based on a design introduced five years earlier for motorcycle racing. Dan couldn’t match the wee Scot’s pace that day, but his full-face helmet—the first ever used by a racecar driver—changed safety and style in motorsports forever. When AMA Grand National Champ Kenny Roberts crossed the pond in ‘78 to contest the prestigious 500cc GP World Championships, no one on the continent thought the dusty dirt tracker could win. So skeptical were the judgmental Euros of Kenny’s pace, organizers didn’t bring a copy of the National Anthem for podium presentations. When he won his first 500 GP in Austria that year, King Kenny stood proudly in silence while race officials hoisted Old Glory high above the throng of stunned onlookers. Roberts earned two more World Championships in five seasons of GP racing, raising both the financial stakes and safety standards for professional motorcycle racers in the process. In 2000 the headstrong American was named a Grand Prix Legend by the FIM, the same organization that scoffed at the farm boy from Modesto two decades earlier. When we added a face shield to our Gringo a couple years ago, bikeriders worldwide rejoiced. Finally, a stripped-down lid with reliable optics and a clean silhouette that doesn’t scream feature creep or break the bank. Same tough, lightweight construction and DOT compliance as its sibling, but enhanced with an injection-molded, CNC laser-cut polycarbonate shield for added protection from flying debris. Simply put, a classic helmet one might remember seeing on the head of a king.

When he thrust himself into the belly of the beast to pen his take on life among the Angels, Hunter S. Thompson and his raw style of first-person journalism blurred the lines between fact finding and storytelling forever. Was it fake news if you lived it? Is it real news if it kills you? Thompson pushed hard to find out, with his face often serving as the punchline to whatever dark joke he tried to tell. Crashing and burning were simple occupational hazards to Mr. Gonzo, like paper cuts and broken pencils. A good helmet might have softened any number of Thompson’s harsh landings, but he preferred booze and pills. Living on the fringe Mr. Thompson might say isn’t easy, but it beats the hell out of the alternative. The Lane Splitter is for guys like HST. People who know the risks, but take them anyway.
