After drilling, tapping and surface prepping, Murdock risers are TIG welded with 4130 chromoly uprights for unrivaled stiffness and strength. MURDOCK PULLBACK RISERS Two inches of rear offset may not sound like a lot, but it’s enough to cure back discomfort after four or five hundred miles in the saddle. Pullback Murdock risers for 1-inch handlebars accomplish this feat by moving the handlebar centerline closer to your shoulders, reducing the amount of stretching required to comfortably hold the hand controls on big cruisers and FXRs.

Murdock risers feature investment-cast steel top clamps and lower threaded bases connected by two 1-inch O.D. x 0.120” wall seamless 4130 chromoly tubes. After TIG welding the finished unit is hand polished and triple chrome or matte black plated for style and durability. The threaded bases on Murdock risers are on 3.5inch centers to fit most stock and aftermarket H-D triple trees with removable bar clamps. THREE’S A CHARM. Mike D’s Sex Panther III.

Whether by marketing genius, blind ambition or dumb luck, Harley-Davidson struck gold again when an army of bikeriders weaponized with smartphones and wanderlust turned The MoCo’s much maligned Sportster into #TheNextBigThing on Instagram. Our own Mike Ellis was an early adopter in the self-taught DIY movement that grew strong in the wake of social media. The original Sex Panther Mike and friends built from scratch nearly a decade ago marked the first time our faithful GM touched flap disk to raw steel. Mike’s noodling on that first chopper has never ceased, with every subsequent version of the Panther topping the last. Fifty percent of the time Mike’s mechanical wizardry works every time, and that’s a fact even Ron Burgundy believes in.

Ergonomics is the science of man’s physical relationship to the machines that surround him. Prevailing wisdom dictates the more comfortably a person feels behind the bars on his motorcycle, the more safely and efficiently he will perform. We’re not rocket surgeons, but we take this science seriously, especially as it applies to handlebar design. Because we enjoy riding and modifying so many different kinds of motorcycles—everything from dualsports and dirt bikes to Dynas and shovelheads—we’ve learned a lot about the comfort and aesthetics of handlebars. This year’s range of Biltwell bars is our most eclectic ever, and has something for practically everyone. Of course every set is precision crafted and TIG welded with 0.120” wall 4130 chromoly for strength, and chrome or black electroplated for lasting beauty. Unless stated, all handlebars are 1” diameter.

TRACKER HIGH Fans of the club style will dig our new Tracker High’s perfect backsweep and 4-inch rise, which provides enough room between the top bends on tall risers to see the speedo. If you’re a tall guy on a small bike, the Tracker XL is comfortable without being clunky, stylish without being over-decorated. A semi-narrow four-bend classic that looks great and feels even better on practically any stock or custom motorcycle you can imagine. We’ve seen our Chump bar on shovels, panheads, stock and hardtail Sportsters, and even one Triumph America.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a two-lane ribbon of undulating asphalt that stretches 469 miles between Ashville, North Carolina and Charlotte, Virginia, through the Appalachian Forest’s Blue Ridge mountain range. Dubbed “America’s favorite drive” by US Forestry Service PR flacks, after cruising its length last summer, several members of Biltwell’s road crew can verify that claim. For pure motorcycle goodness, few stretches of twisting tarmac are more satisfying.

GRIPS COMFORTABLE, LIKE SOMETHING YOU HOLD ONTO SHOULD BE.

The R&D brain trust at Biltwell grew its two-wheeled roots on the sugary dirt-bike tracks of Florida and the scorching hot deserts of SoCal. Consequently, our opinion on motorcycle grips is slightly myopic. Put short and sweet, we like them soft and affordable, not billet-alloy hard and spendy. If flame print aluminum grips made sense from a performance perspective you’d find them on the Doctor’s GP bike, or the GOAT’s RM-Z450. Both these bad asses earn a living with simple injection-molded grips on their bar ends. If it’s good enough for them, it’s plenty good enough for us. Retrofitting Biltwell grips on stock H-D hand controls requires replacing the throttle tube, and our Whiskey tube is perfect for this task. We offer five styles in five colors and two different bar end diameters, so there’s a Biltwell grip for damn near everyone. Grab a pair—they do their job right.

WEAPON IS OTTO’S DAILY RIDER.

Mike Deutsch is our resident road warrior and unrepentant Instagram addict. When he isn’t searching hashtags or hawking tired hip hop lyrics as clever captions on the @biltwell feed, he haunts swap meets from Sacto to the LBC looking for long deals on big-twin booty. This FXR is Otto’s finest score. Mike sold his last FXR for a cool ten grand a year ago to finance the resurrection of this one, a ’93 that earned its salvage title when Biltwell co-worker Hayden Brooks took it for a test flight in the diamond lane on the 215. Using the unholy powers of digital influence that live in his thumbs, Mike texted and tagged his way into a Corsair fork from Gigastatt Cycles, fresh paint from OC’s top gunslinger Matt Ross and at least another dozen hook-ups and brodowns from friends in high places. The finished machine is a reliable high-speed runner, and has helped Mike pull at least eight thousand dollars’ worth of OC “sevens” by his calculation. By this metric, that’s money well spent.

Anyone who compares mirrors on a chopper to tits on a boar hog has probably never ridden with one, and for good reason—most look cheap at best, or gaudy and over-styled in the extreme. CAFE & BANANA SEATS Our Banana and Café seats fit ’86-’03 H-D XL’s with stock rear fenders and unmolested subframes. Both models are built on the same vacuum-formed heavy-duty ABS plastic pan with molded closed-cell PU foam padding. Installation requires drilling a hole in the middle of your rear fender.

After serving his country in Afghanistan, Victor Offut traded his digital camo and M4 for some 501’s and a ghastly but reliable H-D XL. The previous owner had festooned that Sportster with every gadget and gizmo you could imagine, and even had the audacity to call his Craig’s List classic a “bobber.” After landing his customerservice job at Biltwell, Vic—a man of few words and even less taste for decorations and labels—rolled his donor bike into our shop for some tuning and grinding with co-workers and friends. A few months later Vic’s leaner, meaner XL was ready for action. The made-for-TV chopper drama that flooded basic cable in the early 2000’s wasn’t high art, but it shined a bright light on the virtues and value of blue-collar craftsmanship—welding, metal fabrication, that sort of thing. NOBODY MAKES THREE-SNAP MX VISORS ANYMORE. WELL, ALMOST.

In the sixties helmet visors looked like sugar scoops, curvy and blunt, with barely enough leading edge to block low-hanging sun from your eyes. Aerodynamics were coming into play, and car racers learned the hard way too-long visors put a strain on their necks at high speed. The seventies heralded a new direction in visor style, with long, wide duckbills leading the charge to keep flying mud and debris from peppering an MX racer’s face. The eighties were all about style, with the coolest visors flowing seamlessly into the helmet’s outer shell to create a new, swoopy whole. Accessory visors with snaps died in this decade, save for a few cheesy stragglers that came free with cheap import lids. eBay has kept the retro visor market alive ever since, with the coolest designs fetching hundreddollar price tags. McGoo is our resident visor snob and way too cheap to pay that kind of money for a 30-year-old chunk of plastic, so he worked with our bubble shield factory to create his crowning achievement in helmet couture— the Biltwell Moto visor. Molded from impact-resistant polycarbonate plastic, our Moto visor melds the best elements of ‘60s auto racing and ‘70s MX style into a shape that looks great on any helmet with three snaps across the brow, but especially so on our Bonanza and Gringo skid lids.

Overland’s rugged yet flexible polyurethane frame boasts a narrow silhouette and precise optical arc to maximize peripheral vision and reduce blind spots. Foam filtration on the brow and both sides of the nose bridge lets the goggle breathe to reduce fogging in adverse conditions. Two-phase foam padding around the eye port features a quilted, brushed Lycra surface layer to wick moisture away from your skin. Two laser CNC’ed polycarbonate lenses are included with every goggle: one clear and one tinted. Both injection-molded lenses feature the most reliable anti-fog coating available to deliver distortionfree visual clarity and maximum protection. A woven—not screenprinted— elastic strap with double D-ring adjusters and anti-slip silicone stripping is hand sewn to embossed synthetic leather frame fasteners to complete the Overland goggle’s clean retro/tech aesthetic.

Gypsy Run MC Walt Gemeinhardt has been showing East Coast bikeriders how to have a good time for a ten years. No vendor tents, Jurassic era rock bands or Official Anything are visible at his Gypsy Runs, and that’s what makes these events so memorable.

Do we stop riding motorcycles because we get old, or do we get old because we stop riding motorcycles? That depends on your idea of a good time. If swilling eight-dollar longnecks at a wet t-shirt contest puts lead in your pencil, the grass-root rides that put Biltwell’s name on the map probably aren’t your quart of 40-weight. If you like your choppers dirty, your women loud and your campgrounds cheap—or any combination thereof—events like the Gypsy Run, El Diablo Run and Catalina Wine Mixer are calling your name. There’s an odd satisfaction in the shared misery of a few hundred men and women sleeping in a muddy holler after throwing hatchets and cooking s’mores ‘til three a.m. Grass-roots events have low costs and even lower expectations, and that’s why we love them. Too many moving parts seldom makes anything better—only more complicated and less reliable. Strip away the BS at any mega rally and what do you get? Booze, bikes and bros if you’re lucky, and that’s plenty.
