Running head: KYOTO PROTOCOL AND GLOBAL WARMING EVALUATION 1
Kyoto Protocol and Global Warming Evaluation ECO/370
KYOTO PROTOCOL AND GLOBAL WARMING EVALUATION 2 Kyoto Protocol and Global Warming Evaluation Global climate change is the idea that the Earth’s climate is currently changing at an unprecedented rate as a result of human activity. Though the overall trend is toward a warmer climate, the term “climate change” is used to convey the idea that the situation is far more complex than temperature alone (University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, 2012). Climate change will not only mean warmer weather, but also more severe storms, drought, and sea level rise. To fully understand climate change, one must understand the greenhouse effect.
The Earth’s atmosphere is made up of a number of different gases including oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor. These gases act like the glass in a greenhouse. They allow light from the sun to penetrate, but amplify its heating effects by preventing a proportion of the heat from leaving again. The result is a warmer climate than could be achieved by the sun alone (NASA, 2012). In fact, the Earth is as hospitable as it is because of this so called “greenhouse effect.”
