Week 3 Assignment BUS 660 Contemporary Issues in Organizational Leadership
RUNNING: LEADERSHIP STYLE
Most people understand that good leaders are not born that way, but that they become leaders through experience and development. There are also several traits that help differentiate one from being just a leader and being a good leader. To understand what a leader is, one must understand that the very definition of a leader, and that is, “a person who has commanding authority or influence” (Meriam Webster, 2012). Understanding that a leader has the authority to command does not necessarily mean a leader is viewed or respected as a good leader. While many people feel they have the authority to command or demand others to do what they want, a good leader has qualities that set them apart from the pack. There are seven basic qualities that a leader has that will be proof to others that they are trustworthy and live by the example of ethical behavior of responsibility, honesty, and integrity. “A good leader whether they naturally possess leadership qualities or not, will be diligent to consistently develop and strengthen them in their leadership role(s)” (White, 2012). Good leaders will have a sense of purpose, justice, temperance, respect, empowerment, courage, and deep commitment (Elias, 2011).
