LAUIL603 SELF INITIATED BRIEF 1: PICTURE BOOK ZINE PROGRESS
I wanted to focus on birds for my first picture book zine after being inspired by the John James Audubon Birds of America series so I gathered some visual inspiration and I also borrowed some bird illustration books from my dad so that I could sketch from them.
I didn’t really have a concept or a theme at this point I just did a little bit of drawing in my sketchbook to see where it would take me. After lots of digital illustration it felt strange to go back to pencil and paper, almost alien. I started off by doing a coloured pencil sketch of a couple of goldfinches but after that I kept it a little more fluid and sped up the process by with some line drawings. I think I prefer them to the goldfinches even though I spent way last time on them I think there’s a lot more movement and energy in the drawings.
Continued sketching birds in my sketchbook, was enjoying the freedom of drawing for the fun of it but was also concerned about when I would start turning these sketches into something more exciting.
I’d suddenly had the idea to do a zine on an aviary of anatomy. I wanted to create a zine mixing birds with anatomical illustrations (hence where the finches and the intestines sketch was born from.) I think I was just looking to make something that was a bit strange and visually quite strange/surreal as that’s what I tend to like making and like looking at! In the end the process was taking me too long and other projects got in the way. I then re-purposed the birds for a poetry spread which also didn’t work but it did directly inform the outcome of the final spread so wasn’t all a waste of time!
I also had a second idea for a zine on birds which was influenced by these two images but mainly the bottom one. I was interested in the idea of fusion. My concept for the zine was based around the popular phrase “two birds one stone It was going to be a visual zine of birds fused together using digital collage and on the adjoining page would be a graphic of a single stone. I thought it was a neat idea an interesting idea for a zine without being too complex! I tried out fusing two birds together as you can see below, I’d really like to revisit this zine idea at some point!
I also started a zine on sad clowns. It started by me placing a long red balloon over the mouth of a clown graphic and then the idea progressed into a full clown portrait made entirely out of balloons. From here I abandoned the sad clown idea and I wanted to make a zine which was entirely balloon shapes. I had some interesting ideas for compositions and I liked the naivety of the project and how it was so far removed from my usual style of work. I didn’t get to do any more images for this brief but I still really like the clown!
