Happy 145th Birthday, Canada Enjoy Our Beach, But in All Ways Treat it with Respect!
The near-drowning of a young woman who chose to take a dip at Wasaga Beach early one Saturday morning last year when very few people were there was an eye opener. She had two friends along, but they did not swim and could not get her out of the water until the surf washed her close enough for them to grab her without themselves getting into trouble. This individual is fortunate to be alive, but was hospitalized and in critical condition 24 hours after the incident. It's one thing to take a stroll along the edge of the surf during early morning or late evening hours, when the World’s Longest Freshwater Beach is deserted or nearly empty. The attraction is obvious --peaceful setting, soothing sound of the waves, cool breezes and a romantic setting for photos and memories. Georgian Bay is inviting, invigorating and exciting. Good and experienced swimmers may feel invulnerable, but that is a trap. But danger lurks beneath its spume and undulating surf. Unseen currents can grab an unsuspecting swimmer and pull him (or her) out toward the open bay before he realizes what is happening. The beach and sun are not to be trifled with either. The key to having fun at the beach and taking home fond memories is respect. The Beach and sun call to us, but we must do so with a healthy respect for the unseen dangers that lurk --sunburn (and the potential for future skin cancer) and currents are chief among them. To enjoy our Beach safely this summer, here are a few suggestions: » Never swim in the bay alone. Floatation devices (mattresses) should be tethered to the arm or leg. » Understand that swimming in the surf is not the same as swimming in a pool or lake. » Alcohol and the beach are not a natural combination, despite common wisdom. Save the cold six-pack for later, when you are safely distant from the water’s temptations. » The sun feels good, especially early in the season after being cooped up in heavy clothing or indoors for months. Don't be fooled; it will burn you, and too much of it can lead to skin cancer. Enjoy it sparingly and use sun screen -- before you hit the beach. » Be alert for currents. They are nearly invisible, but are powerful and can be lethal. If you are caught in one, do not fight it. Swim parallel to shore until you have escaped its pull, then return to shore. » Even regular waves demand respect. They can knock you down, break bones, dislocate joints and wreak havoc with the unsuspecting human body. If you notice a big one headed your way,, hold your breath and duck under as it passes. Don't dive unless you are sure of the water's depth. There's nothing that says summer like hot sand, beautiful fresh air and a lively surf. Enjoy our beach, but in all ways treat it with respect. Remember also to Enjoy our Beach but Respect Our Community!

Point of View Draining Georgian Bay I have lived on Georgian Bay for over 35 years and I have to say that what is happening to our beautiful bay is a travesty and for us to ignore what is going on is unconscionable. By now, most of you have realized the seriousness of the impact of declining water levels of Lake Huron. The invasion of hundreds of miles of pristine beaches and exposed shores by Phramites (a species of 12 foot reeds) has destroyed this habitat for fish, waterfowl and yes, even Man. Appalling! The loss of more than 20% of Georgian Bay’s wetland (the spawning grounds for 80% of fish species) is an ecological disaster. Of course the declining water levels have many other environmental, economic and social impacts. You might ask, “why isn’t something being done to respond to this growing tragedy?” Let me try and explain... The International Join Commission was established in 1909 to protect the Great Lakes. Their mandate from the U.S and Canadian Governments includes “if lake levels drop near to or at Chart Datum for 2 or 3 years, the I.J.C. must take action immediately to avoid permanent, severe damage to the Lakes”. The Lake Huron/Michigan levels have been at or near Chart Datum for 13 years, yet the I.J.C. has not taken action! The I.J.C. Study Group has just finished a four year, 17 Million dollar study of Lakes Michigan/Huron water levels including the St. Clair River. Their final report acknowledges the severe declines in the water levels of the lakes and confirms that the outflow of the St. Clair River which drains Lakes Michigan/Huron has increased approximately 6% contributing to the decline! In spite of the clarity of the urgency of the on-going disaster, the Study Group decided to make no recommendations to take action! The don’t want to do anything, despite their clear mandate. It is time for all of us who care about this environmental disaster to stand up and be counted! Here’s how. The I.J.C. is holding public hearings and your voices need to be heard! Meetings are to be held at Midland, July 16th and Collingwood, July 17th. Further information on meeting details are available at web sites listed below. Please feel free to contact me at 705-443-8684 or snowyjoe@rogers.com. The Sierra Club is planning a significant protest to create awareness at these meetings including theme T-Shirts. To be effective, we desperately need your support to demonstrate to the world that the I.J.C. is displaying gross negligence in the face of this environmental disaster. Please be there! “Good Job Bouquet” to Bev and Tony Turner
Beverley and Tony Turner with Son Jacob
Tony Turner is presented with “Good Job Bouquet” from Cathy’s Flower and Gift Boutique and a Good Job Certificate by Joe Bickerstaff of Beach BOOSTER. Young Jacob Turner looks on in fascination.
Bev and Tony Turner of Wasaga Beach are the most recent recipients of the Good Job Bouquet. On April 23, 2011 Bev and Tony’s son Jacob was born 2 weeks before his due date because of an emergency complication. When he was born Jacob had a stroke. The medical team at the Collingwood G&M hospital did everything they could to keep him alive including giving him the first blood transfusion to a new born for the hospital. A blood transfusion was needed because his blood count was at 32 when a normal new born should be around 150. A transport team from Sick Kids arrived a few hours later and try to stabilize him to fly to Sick Kids in Toronto which took another 6 hours. While Bev was recovering from a C- section, little Jacob was in Toronto being looked after by a great team. The anxious parents arrived at Sick Kids two days later and had a meeting with the head doctor and other team members, to be told our son had a stroke and he is lucky to be alive. The doctors explained that Jacob will likely suffer severe permanent brain damage or little... all depending on his progress over the next few weeks. A month later and after a lot of praying, they were able to take Jacob home. He continues to receive OT and PT at home to this day and will continue until he goes to school. When Tony heard of the upcoming Big Bike event for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, he knew right away that he wanted to be involved. He contacted The Foundation and then organized Team Jacob. Tony’s team consisted of 22 riders and his efforts were supported by his employer, Collingwood Home Depot. Decked out with Team Jacob shirts, the enthusiastic team was pleased to raise $2,200.00 for The Heart and Stroke Foundation. This amount was generously matched by Collingwood Home Depot, bringing the total raised to $4,400.00! Tony and Bev wish to thank all of their supporters and plan on making next year’s Big Bike Event even bigger and better. Good Job Tony and Bev... and Best Wishes to little Jacob!

Nancy Island is located in Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, Wasaga Beach known as the longest fresh water beach in the world. This historic attraction begins with the story of a schooner- “The Nancy”. This private cargo vessel was used for the fur trade on Lakes Ontario, Erie, St. Clair and Huron. It carried goods including food, clothing, rum, weapons, ammunition and meat. John Richardson supervised the construction of the vessel and it is believed the ship was named for either his wife or daughter. The Nancy was decorated with a distinctive figure head of a lady dressed in the latest fashion with a hat and feather. During the war of 1812 she was issued into service with her first trip taking her to Fort Erie. She was used to transport stores and provisions between Detroit and Fort Erie from the middle of the summer to early fall. The Nancy was commanded for a short period of time in 1814 by Lieutenant Worsley, a British Naval Officer, the ship was then referred to as “H.M.S. Nancy”. The Nottawasaga River was heavily utilized by the Nancy to transport supplies to the British garrison at Fort Mackinac, between Lakes Huron and Michigan. American forces soon learned of this supply route and developed plans to capture the Nancy. A message was sent to Lieutenant Worsley warning him of the approaching Americans and to hide the ship up river. On August 14,1814, three American ships discovered the Nancy and great battle ensued. Lieutenants Worsley and Livingston, along with 22 seamen, 23 Indians, and 9 French Canadian Voyageurs put up a valiant effort up against some 500 American men. Lieutenant Worsley decided to destroy the Nancy rather than allowing the ship to fall into enemy hands. The ship was set afire and sunk into the depths of the Nottawasaga River. After the destruction of the Nancy, American forces hoped to starve the garrison at Fort MacKinac and force a surrender and take control of the Upper Great Lakes. However, Lieutenant Worsley, Nancy's crew, and troops from Fort Mackinac rallied and captured two American ships, The Tigress and Scorpian. This action allowed the British to regain control of this vital supply route bringing the end of the war and the signing of the Treaty of Ghent. The charred hull of the Nancy created an obstruction in the Nottawasaga River collecting sand and silt over 100 years. This aided in the formation of Nancy Island. The charred hull was discovered in 1911 and was raised and placed on the island in 1928. The Nancy Museum was later constructed to commemorate this terrific event in Wasaga's Naval history. The hull of the Nancy can be observed inside the museum. Submitted by David J. Brunelle, OCT Project Director, Southern Georgian Bay War of 1812 Bicentennial Committee

705-429-0-911 An elderly man wanted to plant a tomato garden but it was difficult work as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The elderly man wrote a letter to his son: Dear Vincent I am feeling sad because I won't be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I'm too old already. I know if you were here, you would happily dig the plot for me like in the old days. Love Papa A few days later, he received a letter from his son. Dear Papa Don't dig up the garden. That's where the bodies are buried. Love Vinnie At 4 a.m. the next morning, RCMP agents and O.P.P. arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the elderly man and left. That day, another letter from his son arrived: Dear Papa Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I could do under the circumstances. Love you Vinnie

Farmer Clyde Tells His Story in Court A farmer named Clyde had a car accident. In court, the trucking company’s fancy hot shot lawyer, was questioning Clyde. “Didn’t you say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine,’?” asked the lawyer. Clyde responded, “Well, I’ll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favourite cow, Bessie, into the…” “I didn’t ask for any details”, the lawyer interrupted. “Just answer the question, please. Did you, or did you not say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine!’?” Clyde said, “Well, I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the road….” The lawyer interrupted again and said, “Your Honour, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the O.P.P. on the scene that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question.” By this time, the Judge was fairly interested in Clyde’s answer and said to the lawyer, “I’d like to hear what he has to say about his favourite cow, Bessie”. Clyde thanked the Judge and proceeded. “Well, as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favourite cow, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie was thrown into the other. I was hurting, real bad and didn’t want to move. However, I could hear old Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans. Shortly after the accident an O.P.P. cop came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning, so he went over to her. After he looked at her, and saw her fatal condition, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes. Then the cop came across the road, gun still in hand, looked at me, and said, “How are you feeling?” “Now tell me, what the heck would you say? Gary Cerantola; gary@beachbooster.com Bringing the Pieces Together – Supporting our Young Hometown Entrepreneurs The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs has been quoted as saying “Small businesses are the engine of the Canadian economy. Even in recent recessionary times, small and medium enterprises outperformed the rest of the economy.” In the last two months, Wasaga Beach has welcomed a new voice that will definitely raise the bar for small and medium sized businesses. It is the newly formed “Business under 40” group that was initiated by a few of the younger members of the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce. They have since adopted a mission to promote Wasaga Beach as a thriving region for young business people to live and work, thereby creating a strong business community for the future. The next piece of the puzzle as I see it is to engage and support our youth in Wasaga Beach to help them develop into the next generation of business leaders. We need to start with an understanding that it is not just the call of the city that compels young people to leave their small towns. There is a perceived lack of opportunity and encouragement to “not come back” that drives young people away from their hometowns. What if we rallied our current business leaders, and our community and social groups to create a local entrepreneurial program for youth? We could establish training, hands on business experience and mentoring to get them started down the path of creating their own enterprises and in the process, create their own reasons to stay and become the future leaders of Wasaga Beach. It would not be overly difficult to create a business incubation center in conjunction with Georgian College. It turns out we have a brand new Georgian College campus just a few kilometers down the road that is looking for opportunities to provide community training and development. We have a lot of successful and talented people in our community that can get together and help create a program, source local mentors and create cooperative work assignments at our local businesses to provide meaningful work experiences for our youth. We have a Youth Centre in our town whose mission is to provide a sustainable, safe, supportive place for all youth to be engaged through collaboration and compassion in partnership with our community that could lend itself as a focal point to enable this effort. In order to help develop our youth to become our needed future leaders and retain them with the skills and experience to thrive in our community, we need a strong foundation for youth engagement in their hometown. I believe the answer resides in partnerships. Community, education and business leaders could make the difference. We could create programs that could help our youth develop, prosper and most importantly, live here in their adult lives and help create a strong business community for the future. Wasaga Beach could be known for nurturing businesses and a place to successfully launch a business as well as a place to have fun at the World’s Longest Freshwater “Blue Flag” Beach. Beach Booster is certainly here to help. Send me your thoughts. Please email me at Gary@beachbooster.com
Chickens and Geese, Ducks and Turkeys What would a farm be without chickens and geese, ducks and turkeys? Today, it is easy to buy young birds from a nearby friendly hatchery. But, back in the 19th century, finding fowl for the farm wasn’t quite as easy. Many a family from Scotland, Ireland or England brought their chickens with them. Fresh eggs on an immigrant ship were a treat and could be bartered for cash and provisions. Most farm women around Simcoe County raised as many fowl as they could. Pullets were kept for laying hens while roosters were fattened for the very special market days that were held close to Thanksgiving and Christmas. With the money that was received for their poultry, country women would buy Christmas presents. But raising chickens was often a risky affair. The familiar sound of a crowing rooster might have been welcomed but it also attracted prowling animals that would turn that chicken into a quick meal. Eggs by the dozen joined butter and cream as products that could be carried to the local general store and exchanged for credit or cash. And when company arrived unexpectedly, a chicken was easy to catch and made a wonderful supper, particularly on a Sunday night. Flocks of up to 1,500 chickens were not uncommon on Simcoe County farms. They were joined in the barnyard by ducks and geese and, in later years, turkeys. Domesticated turkeys replaced the wild ones that had once been plentiful in nearby forests. By the turn of the 20th century, many a farm was exporting turkeys to Ontario’s larger cities. On Manitoulin Island, an entire turkey industry once dominated the economy. Turkeys and geese and ducks – known as Christmas dinners on many a farm – were a common sight. Largely self-sufficient, they would roam the barnyard, swim in nearby ponds and creeks, and, by fall, be fat and heavy and ready for market. Sold fresh, a twenty-pound turkey brought twenty cents a pound. Think about that the next time you buy a frozen, butter-injected turkey at your local grocery store.

TEE IT FORWARD encourages all golfers to play the course at a length that is aligned with their average driving distance. Golfers can speed up play by utilizing tees that provide the greatest playability and enjoyment. The program was promoted at the U.S. Open Championship in June and will be talked about at the U.S. Women's Open Championship in July. “Simply put, TEE IT FORWARD can make golf much more fun for millions of people,” said PGA of America President Allen Wronowski. “We believe that by moving up to another set of tees, golfers will experience an exciting, new approach to the game that will produce more enjoyment and elevate their desire to come back and play even more golf." Barney Adams, the founder of Adams Golf, provided the concept that led to TEE IT FORWARD. By playing from forward tees, amateur golfers have the chance to play the course at the same relative distance as a touring professional would over 18 holes. The playing field is leveled by giving golfers the opportunity to play from distances that are properly aligned with their abilities. With many more golfers hitting approach shots with 6- and 7-irons instead of hybrids and long irons, their chances for enjoyment increase. Also, playing from forward tees should result in fewer overall shots, shorter distance traveled on each hole, and potentially, fewer lost balls. “The passion that golfers have for our game has the potential to be enhanced by the TEE IT FORWARD initiative," said Jim Hyler, president of the United States Golf Association. "This is an innovation that we think will appeal to golfers of all skill levels because it gives them a new challenge that better aligns with their abilities. We hope that TEE IT FORWARD will be embraced by players and golf facilities across the country." TEE IT FORWARD is not necessarily about creating a new set of tees -- many facilities already have multiple tees in use every day. It is about changing the mindset of golfers in a positive way -- encouraging people to consider setting aside playing from 6,500-6,700 yards and moving up to a length of 6,000-6,200 yards or moving from 6,000-6,200 yards to 5,7005,800 yards. The 6,700-yard course that many amateur golfers play today is proportionally equivalent to a PGA Tour player competing on a course measuring 8,100 yards -- 700 yards or more longer than a typical PGA Tour layout. Jack Nicklaus, who shares the record with Walter Hagen for most PGA Championship titles with five and also shares the U.S. Open record with four victories, is a proponent of TEE IT FORWARD. TEE IT FORWARD also coincides in July with The PGA of America’s Family Golf Month, which has approximately 2,200 facilities already registered for that national initiative.

Bob wearily trudged into his house and laid down his bag of golf clubs. "How was your game, darling" asked his wife, Jane. "I was hitting the ball ok, but my eyesight's gotten so damn bad I couldn't see where the ball went.' shrugged Bob. "Well, you're 75 years old," said Jane. "You can't expect everything to be like it was. Why don't you take my brother Jimmy along" "But he's 85 and he doesn't even play golf any more" protested Bob. "But he's got perfect eyesight," Jane pointed out, he can watch the ball for you." So the next day Bob teed off with Jimmy looking on. He swung and the ball disappeared down the middle of the fairway. "Do you see it, do you see it" asked Bob in anticipation. "Yep!" Jimmy answered. "Well where is it" exclaimed Bob, peering off into the distance. "I forgot," said Jimmy.

The Way Wasaga Was by Joe Bickerstaff Although Wasaga Beach has had a variety of great (and some not so great) hotels and restaurants over the years, some stand as historic and there are some that were ground breaking... and perhaps ahead of their time. In the mid 70’s a brand new hotel opened in Wasaga Beach and showed off ultra modern hotel rooms and a beautiful new dining room and lounge. The Hotel Waldhorn certainly was special with its menu that included great steaks, seafood and all the good stuff that goes with fine dining. I remember the wonderful baked French Onion Soup as being one of the best I had ever enjoyed! The impressive new Hotel Waldhorn on Mosley Street, was built and operated by Karl Fuhre Sr. and family, who were well known in our area for their community involvement. Karl Sr. was a chartered member of the Collingwood Rotary Club and is considered the father of the Wasaga Beach Rotary Club as he was instrumental in the founding of the club in 1984. The brand new Wasaga Beach club held their meetings the Hotel Waldhorn. Although Karl will always be known for his buildings, his love of art was always evident in his projects. The various buildings in and around the Hotel Waldhorn built by the Fuhre family still show some of Karl’s artwork. What once was The Hotel Waldhorn in Wasaga Beach, is now the Wasaga Beach Senior’s Residence. Karl Fuhre Sr. passed away in 2007. The family business continues as Fuhre Construction Ltd.

Real Estate Bench Mark.....by Glenn Cunningham Use registered, certified professionals...they have the resources and information you need to make the best decision when buying or selling real estate! As a professional realtor I believe I must be able to provide the very best resources for my clients when they are looking to make the big decision of a real estate purchase. Just this last week changes were made in the world of mortgages and our expert on our website (www.TeamRealtyExecutives.com) is Karen Fritz AMP, Broker/Owner (M08004412) at Centum Mortgages (Brokerage Licence #12018). Karen speaks straightforwardly and clearly to clients and knows her business very well. I have asked Karen to share her thoughts on the latest mortgage news with you... What impact will this have in overall mortgage business? If you look at any recent housing market survey, you'll notice a common trend. The Canadian real estate market is cooling, but definitely not popping. We're actually heading into a more balanced market in most of the country. The recent changes are designed to limit the amount of household debt Canadians currently have and take effect July 9, 2012. By reducing the amortization period to 25 years from 30 years - people will face higher mortgage payments but are expected to be debt free faster. The amortization period has been reduced twice before, in 2008 (35 years) and in 2011 (30 years). An example of how this will affect Canadians, reducing an amortization for a $300,000 mortgage at 3.29% from 30 years to 25 years is a difference of approx. $156. The change in amortization will have minimal affect moving forward. Lowering the maximum amount that Canadians can borrow when refinancing to 80 percent from 85% of the value of their homes is a move to try to encourage homeowners to manage borrowings against their homes. With historically low interest rates, the fear is that homeowners are increasing their household debt (by paying off higher interest rate credit cards, etc) by accessing the equity in their homes. Limiting this to 80 percent will certainly create awareness in overall consumer spending. Fix the maximum gross debt service ratio at 39 percent and the maximum total debt service ratio at 44 percent. These two ratios are used to determine affordability. The gross debt service ratio looks at a person's monthly housing costs in comparison to their gross monthly income. It's recommended that this ratio should not exceed 32%, and is now capped at 39%. The total debt service ratio looks at a person's entire monthly debt load compared to their gross monthly income. This ratio should not exceed 40% and is now capped at 44%. This change will better protect Canadian households that may be vulnerable to economic shocks/job loss, etc. or an increase in interest rates Limit the availability of government-backed insured mortgages to homes with a purchase price of less than $1million. This new cap should not affect many families or first-time home-buyers for which the Government-backed mortgage insurance was originally created. What impact do you think it will have to us here in an area where many homes are 2nd homes? Since the new rules have just been announced, lenders are still reworking their individual lending guidelines. However, at this point, I do not feel that these changes will negatively affect the purchase of 2nd homes. Many clients looking to purchase 2nd homes tend to be established, have equity in their existing home, and can withstand the slightly higher payment associated with a 25 year amortization. As a Mortgage Broker what are your concerns if any? Overall, these changes may slightly decrease the amount of purchase power that a client may qualify for. However, it is never a good idea to purchase the maximum... Life changes/interest rate hikes/ job losses/ raising children should always be factored into the equation. Whether you are a current homeowner or are in the market for a new place, it's a good idea to take a hard look at your finances and know where your money is going. At Centum, we are always Looking Out For Your Best Interest. There are still many mortgage options available for homeowners and buyers. Find out what mortgage products are right for you! Thanks Karen, you can ask Karen questions on our Ask our Expert section on our website, she will be pleased to answer and help in any way towards providing great mortgages and great information for your mortgage decisions.
