We simply love to play!

O

nce again, the year and the prime golf season sailed by in a flash. It seemed like this year, our spring was short and rainy, then hot and steamy for summer months. Yet, our fall weather may have been the best for golfing of all the seasons, and it gave golf courses the opportunity to recover some income they lost during the May and June monsoons. Maybe, this winter will be like last winter and offer plenty of warm golf days — we hope! January 2017 will begin our 17th year publishing this magazine; we want to thank our nearly 30,000 monthly readers who grabbed a copy each month over the past 16 years. Your dedication to reading the content and using the resources provided within these pages motivates our staff to plunge forward, developing new information each month in our quest to educate and inform you of all the golf opportunities within Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas (our distribution area). I trust that during 2017, our readers will agree that golf course operators, like any business, need to continually increase revenues in order to provide us with a place where we can play the game we love. Only by logging more golf rounds, selling more pro shop apparel, food, beverages and memberships can that be achieved. Your support of all the local KC area golf courses and golf retailers enable avid golfers like us to enjoy the game at many of the nation’s top-rated and maintained golf courses. I also want to thank our loyal advertisers, many of whom have been with us year-after-year for the past 16. Only with their support can our readers continually reap the benefits presented within these pages. I encourage you to continue to do business our advertisers — they want, need and appreciate your business. It’s always a great day to play golf, so grab a friend (or three) and head to a golf course. While there, enjoy your day and don’t be so hard on yourself about the bad shots — the next shot may be that great one, which keeps us coming back for more. Remember, none of us is really all that great; we simply love to play. A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Stone Canyon Golf Club Raises $17,000 to help “Grow The Game” Through

Junior Golf Program

tone Canyon Golf Club of Blue Springs, MO, partners with the Midwest Section PGA’s SNAG (Starting New at Golf), an in-school golf instructional program, to help grow the game with junior golfers.

On Saturday, October 22 the first annual fundraising golf tournament sponsored by the owner of Stone Canyon, D&D Golf, was held to raise money for SNAG equipment, which will be used by elementary school kids within the Blue Springs School District. Getting kids involved in the game of golf at an earlier age is key to capturing their interest in the sport and keeping it throughout their lifetime. It’s a great way to get kids learning that golf is a fun sport! “Our goal for this first event was to raise $15,000 for the SNAG equipment needed for the Blue Springs School District in Eastern Jackson County,” said Kevin Stallings, owner of D&D Golf (photo on left). “We’re very pleased with how the event went this year. We had 25 teams, 100 golfers and the event raised nearly $17,000 to supply the Blue Springs School District with four sets of SNAG equipment and a replacement part budget.” Stone Canyon Golf Club wants to be a leading force to help grow the game of golf within the entire Kansas City Metro, but especially within the Blue Springs community. “D & D Golf has made a commitment to provide SNAG equipment, one District at a time, to assist the Midwest Section PGA Foundation in our own backyard,” said Rick Holtcamp, a PGA Quarter Century Member and GM/Director of Golf at Stone Canyon Golf Club. “Currently, the Foundation has supplied equipment to over 208,350 kids within the Midwest Section, and we want to continue to grow introducing the great game of golf to all kids in our market.” D & D Golf says that the October SNAG fundraising tournament will become an annual fundraising effort. “We were looking for a fund raising initiative that would help grow the game of golf and felt like the Midwest Section PGA’s SNAG program was the perfect fit for us because its Mission Statement is to introduce the game of golf to every elementary/middle school child living in the boundaries of the Midwest Section PGA,” said Stallings. Stone Canyon, D&D Golf, and the Midwest Section PGA thanks all the players, sponsors and the 18 KC area golf courses that donated hole prizes. Their support made this fundraising effort a success!

Dub’s Dread and WinterStone Named as “A Best Public Golf Course” for 2016

F

Editorial & Photography by Bill Cromwell

or this second year of the esteemed “A Best Public Golf Course,” award created by Tee Times Golf Guide™ Magazine, one Missouri and one Kansas golf course within the boundaries of the greater Kansas City metro were presented the award.

The award recognizes select golf courses for outstanding performance, memorability, superb course conditions and services in all categories including: customer service, aesthetics, course value, practice range facilities, first tee and on-course customer service, food and beverage services, clubhouse appeal and pro shop facility. Recipients must show consistent high levels of course conditions and outstanding services in all operational categories throughout the season. Dub’s Dread Golf Club was presented “A Kansas Best Public Golf Course” award for 2016 Dub’s Dread Golf Club, which opened in the late 60s, stands alone in national prominence. It was quickly proclaimed by national golf magazines of the day to be the toughest and longest golf course in America. Today, it remains the only 18 hole public course in the KC area that offers you a chance to walk (or ride in Bluetooth capable carts) the same fairways that legends Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Byron Nelson played — not once, but twice. “When Palmer and Nicklaus played Dub’s Dread, it was played at 8,101 yards stretching across rolling terrain in the village of Piper near Kansas City, KS,” wrote Alan Hoskins in a 2014 article in this magazine. “At the time, the average par 3 at the course was 270 yards, the average par 4 was 473 yards and the average par 5, 596 yards. During the 60s and 70s the USGA rated Dub’s Dread the most difficult in the country. Its course rating was 78.8, nearly seven strokes higher than its par of 72.” Because of changes in the course and a new clubhouse, the course can no longer be played at 8,101 yards (thank goodness); nevertheless, it affords golfers the chance to play the same holes played by many of golf’s greats. Today, the course plays 7,230 yards from the tips with a course rating of 75.3 (par is 72), which means it will test the game of the best players.

Dub’s Dread Golf Club

October 2016 photo by Bill Cromwell

But what makes “A Best Public Golf Course”? It starts at the top with someone who understands that golf is an entertainment business, and then models the business and motivates his staff accordingly. In the case of Dub’s Dread, the person at the top is Jimmy Angelotti, the General Manager and Director of Golf — and of course, the owners support. This year, Dub’s Dread became the first public course in the country to offer Bluetooth compatibility in its entire Scott Cummins, Superintendent (left) fleet of golf carts. The entire of Dub’s Dread, and Jimmy Angelotti, staff is welcoming from the the General Manager and Director of time you check-in to the Golf, receive “A Kansas Best Public time you leave the parking Golf Course” award for 2016. lot. Angelotti is continually cutting-edge with unique promotions and fun events, and offers outstanding performance and services in all categories throughout the golf course. “Angelotti literally grew up on the course in a home adjacent to the 13th hole. He started on the grounds crew at age 15 — a job he held through his days at Piper High School and two years at the University of Kansas before entering the turf management program at Longview. He got into the field full-time working on the construction of Tiffany Greens in 1997 and then served as assistant superintendent during four Senior PGA tourneys after Tiffany opened in 1999,” said Hoskins. Angelotti came back to Dub’s Dread as regional golf superintendent in 2003 and was elevated to General Manager and Director of Golf in 2007. He is particularly proud of two phases of play — speed of play and pricing. Angelotti said, “Pace of play is a big deal these days. Even on a Saturday with 220-230 rounds, we never hit five hours. One

TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE December 2016

of things we take pride is getting people in and out in a reasonable amount of time — including using the driving range or making a stop at the snack bar and still not being here all day long.” We asked Angelotti (A) a few questions about the course and receiving this award:

In his 16th year as Angelotti’s right-hand man, Superintendent Scott Cummins started working at Dub’s Dead in 2001 straight out of college. In 2003, Cummins became the assistant superintendent under Angelotti, and in 2007, when Angelotti was promoted General Manager, Cummins was promoted to Course Superintendent.

How does your course differ from others in the area — what is unique? A: Character. Dub’s is a challenge no matter how many times you play it. It makes you work for your score and when you leave, it always makes you want to come back, so you can try a new approach. Why should a golfer play your course? A: I believe we have an ‘at home feel.’ We do our best to give everyone the best experience possible from check-in to our 19th hole. We try to get to know our customers, so that even the public players can enjoy a membership feel and feel welcome every time they come through the door. For someone who has not played the course in a while, has there been any new changes/renovations to the course or property? A: With the addition of a few new tee boxes and large tree removals to improve playability, I think that the course still presents itself as a true test of golf. We were the first public course in the country this year to offer Bluetooth compatibility in all of our golf carts, and it’s been received very well by our customers. Also, we have again renovated our 19th hole to create a sports bar atmosphere. What tips or local knowledge would you provide to help golfers score better at your course? A: Dub’s Dread is all about the approach shot. You will generally find yourself with an awkward lie, so sometimes hitting a club other than driver off the tee and putting yourself in a spot to score is the true key. What is the signature, most talked about or most photographed hole? A: While some may disagree, I believe that #12 is our signature hole. An elevated tee shot on a hard dogleg par 5 makes for a little thought on how to attack this true gem of a hole. However, we do believe there are several “signature” holes at Dub’s Dread. Scott Cummins, your superintendent, has done a great job at? A: Mr. Consistency. Scott prides himself on providing a consistently good product for all of our golfers. He is very hands on as a superintendent and always puts out the best course conditions possible. How do you want golfers to feel about playing the course after finishing their round? A: Welcomed. We pride ourselves on customer service, and it is our goal to provide an atmosphere that our customers desire to return to. We want every customer to leave and tell their friends about the great time they had at Dub’s Dread. What does this award mean to you? A: This award validates that we are providing the ‛welcoming’ feeling that we strive for every day. Our golfers are usually repeat customers and that is a direct testament to the product and customer services our staff provides on a daily basis. To all the customers that have supported Dub’s Dread over the years — Thank You! To those that haven’t had the chance to play the course — you’re “welcome” here anytime, we’d love to have you! www.TeeTimesMagazine.com

Dub’s Dread Golf Club

October 2016 photo by Bill Cromwell

We asked Superintendent Scott Cummins (C) a few questions about the course and receiving this award: What upgrades and improvements have taken place in recent times to the course? C: We’ve installed a new pump station and irrigation control system. Now, all my sprinkler heads can be turned on with a smart phone. We’ve cut down many trees that had over grown causing a lack of sunlight on areas in the fairways, which has greatly increased the density of fairway grasses. What’s the most challenging aspect to playing Dub’s Dread? C: The long, narrow tree-lined fairways. You better get off the tee in good shape or you could be in jail for the rest of the hole. How do you want golfers to feel about playing the course after finishing their round? C: More than satisfied with the course conditions we work hard to provide them. We want them to feel like they got their money’s worth and will definitely want to play the course again and again. What does this award mean to you? C: It’s a great honor. Awards like this give us great satisfaction and the motivation to keep striving to work harder to produce an even higher quality product for our guests. As for price, “There’s no better deal for seniors,” says Angelotti. “Inseason, Monday through Friday, seniors can play with cart for $28.50 and only $20 in winter. You can’t get a better price in town, you just can’t.” For non-seniors, the top weekend rate is $55, weekdays $43, but Angelotti highly recommends going online to check out the daily specials on www.DubsDreadGolfClub.com. “If I’m slow on a day, I’m going to drop the price, so it’s best to shop online,” he said. “We have also created an atmosphere where golfers can really enjoy themselves after a round of golf,” says Angelotti. “We have a full bar and grill with great food, and new deck and patio offering a beautiful view of the course. The thing we really work hard to offer is a great experience. It’s not just getting around the course in four hours. We have a great golf course at a great value — reasonably priced with top-notch customer service. We always have a beverage cart and the beer is always cold.” A Missouri’s Best Public Golf Course continued on page 22 December 2016

Designed by golfers for golfers, it’s built extremely well, has a retractable cord for easy access from the bag, and even comes with a bonus divot tool and ball marker. Keep your grooves clean and stick more greens! The Golfing Gizmos Club Brush is a quick, simple solution to better contact on every shot! Who it is for? The person who has no idea what else to get and wants to give a golf gift the golfer will use, while not spending a fortune.

GIFT Ideas

My personal favorite is Bushnell’s new Tour V4 from the #1 brand in golf rangefinders. It has my favorite feature — jolt. As soon as it locks onto the flag, it will vibrate, letting you know with absolute certainty that you have the right distance. With the “Slope” technology, you’ll know the exact distance for uphill and downhill shots. Peace-of-mind is everything in golf! Who it is for? The regular golfer who doesn’t already have a rangefinder and loves beating everyone else.

Who it isn’t for? The person who loves walking about aimlessly looking for yardage markers on sprinkler heads, while wasting everyone else’s time. The Bushnell Tour V4 with Slope retails at $399.99 at Edwin Watts stores and Bushnell Factory Outlet Stores in Kansas at 8500 Marshall Drive, Lenexa, KS, 66214 or Missouri at 445 NW Murray road, Lee’s Summit, MO 64081. Visit www.bushnellgolf.com/golf. Best Winter Golf Gloves: Mizuno Thermagrip Winter Golf Gloves Dedicated golfers play year-round. Just because the days are getting chilly does not mean golfers hibernate. Mizuno Thermagrip Winter Golf Gloves could be a perfect gift for your golfer. The combination of leather palms and a flexible weatherproof upper creates toasty warm hands for golfers on those chilly mornings.

Who is it not for? The person who has zero interest in cleaning their clubs. Ever! Golf Divot Tool – Golfing Gizmos® Manufacture: Price $19.99. We found it on www.Amazon.com (by Golfing Gizmos). Sale price of $16.99 and a 4.7 out of 5 stars with 108 customer reviews. For more information, visit www.golfinggizmos.com. Best New Golf Rangefinder: Bushnell Tour V4 with Slope There is just no reason for today’s golfer to not be using the latest technology. Rangefinders are one of the most important tech tools every golfer needs to improve scores, fun and speed of play. It’s also the most asked for golf gift. Why? Because knowing exactly how far away you are from the pin on any given spot on the golf course will give you a huge advantage. 12

ORCA Chaser 27 oz. Tired of melted ice and hot drinks that you wanted cold while golfing? Can’t get far from home without your coffee getting cold? The ORCA Chaser can fix that. We liked these so well (Spoiler Alert) that we bought some as gifts for our writing team (as seen in photo). I’ve tested these on hot days through 18-holes of golf against the big named brand and found that ice stays just as long or even longer. In fact, many times, my ice lasted until I returned home that night. Same with hot beverages — stays hot. The Made in USA, ORCA Chaser’s stainless steel double walled vacuum sealed body ensures that your ice will stay frozen and your drink will stay strong, while its clear lid makes it easy to see when it’s time for a refill. Who it is for? The regular golfer who wants to stay hydrated with their favorite beverages and look good doing it. Shamrock Hills Claims Its Sixth Men’s KC Cup Title

he entire KC Cup Match season came down to the last group on the course, on the final hole of the Kansas City Cup finals.

before beating No. 5 Canyon Farms in the semifinals. Sunflower Hills, the No. 2 seed, defeated The Deuce at the National and Staley Farms en route to a finals appearance.

The Shamrock Hills team hoists the trophy, claiming back-to-back KC Cup Titles (2015 and 16) and an all-time KC Cup Match record of six championship titles since the competition began. Both Shadow Glen and Shamrock Hills teams crowded around the 18th green at Tiffany Greens, on October 21, awaiting the outcome of the final match. Shadow Glen held a 5-2 match lead at one point, leaving no room for error by Shamrock Hills. However, after all the match points were settled, Shamrock Hills managed to pull off four consecutive victories to retain the KC Cup title with a 6-5 victory. With the win, Shamrock Hills claims backto-back KC Cup Titles (2015 and 16) and an all-time KC Cup Match record of six championship titles since the competition began.

The 2016 title is the 4th KC Cup Match Championship win for the Blue Hills women’s team.

Jean Tyrell Honored with the KCGA’s Women’s Amateur Player of the Year Jean Tyrell of Leawood, KS, now a Sophomore at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), posted a T4 at the 2016 Prairie Invitational and a T7 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Sectional qualifying tournament at Lawrence CC.

Shamrock Hills victories included the senior single match (Ed Brown), the senior handicap single match (Chris Sharp), the senior handicap four-ball match (Randy Tarvin and Ray Downing), the handicap fourball #1 match (Alex Aguirre and Eric Reinser), the handicap four-ball #2 match (Jason Hull and Joey Angel) and the Mid-Am/Senior fourball match (Alex Downing and Sam Allegri). Shamrock Hills entered the playoffs as the No. 4 seed, but knocked off Fred Arbanas, then No. 5 seed Stone Canyon in the quarterfinals and No. 8 seed Mission Hills in the semifinals. Shadow Glen, the No. 3 seed, defeated Shawnee Golf and Country Club, then No. 6 seed Hillcrest in the quarterfinals and No. 7 seed Canyon Farms in the semifinals.

Blue Hills Sweeps Women’s KC Cup Finals The women of Blue Hills Country Club displayed a dominating effort at Tiffany Greens in the women’s KC Cup final, winning all three of the four-ball matches against Sunflower Hills Golf Course. Blue Hills earned the No. 1 overall seed in the playoffs and lived up to that title. The team knocked off No. 8 Hillcrest in the quarterfinals 14

As a freshman at FGCU (2015-16) Tyrell played three rounds as a rookie with a stroke average of 79.33 with recorded scores of 82, 83, 73 at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, MO. Tyrell, a four-year member of the golf team at Blue Valley North High School, appeared in several elite golf tournaments, including the 2013 Arizona Silver Bell Championship, the 2010 and 2011 Optimist Junior Golf Championship and the 2012 and 2014 Junior PGA Championship events. or 27 years, Frank Conrick has been on, or near, a golf course. When he turned 13, he started working at Mari Mack Golf Complex in Kearney and from that day forward, he was hooked! Conrick (on left) became Superintendent at Excelsior Springs Golf Course last May, and since his arrival, the course has undergone a tremendous transformation. In fact, it may be the most well-maintained “muni” this ‘Ol Hack (me) played in 2016. Not bad for someone just seven months into his first course superintendent’s job.

approaches, crosscutting fairways and rough have promoted strong vertical turf growth, which improved ball roll and lies. And, there are more improvements in the works. “This fall, the city of Excelsior Springs will complete a cart path renovation project transitioning to concrete paths and replace existing bridges,” he said. “With future clubhouse renovations planned, the city is determined to provide its membership and public golfers with the best conditions possible.” Needless to say, the improvements have been well received. Excelsior Springs Golf Course has a loyal and long-tenured core group of players who Conrick said are thrilled with the current course conditions. Others are noticing too. “State Rep. T.J. Berry told our local

“The challenges facing a firsttime superintendent are endless,” Conrick said, “but I couldn’t have asked for a better situation. “Excelsior Springs Golf Course is truly a special place to play, but an even better place to work!” Before coming to Excelsior Springs, Conrick spent three years as the assistant superintendent at Shoal Creek Golf Course and 13 years as the assistant superintendent at Adams Pointe Golf Club in Blue Springs, MO, but seemingly, “destiny” intervened. Conrick grew up in Kearney and played Excelsior Springs in high school. “I always thought the course was special,” he said. “So, when the job opened, I jumped on it!” Since his arrival at Excelsior Springs, Conrick’s main objectives were enhancing the turf quality and improving the overall playing experience for golfers. He did so by improving the drainage and airflow around the greens. The course installed fans around six potentially vulnerable greens this summer to protect them from the heat and modified other maintenance techniques like verticutting, aerifying and topdressing. Conrick said that tighter mowing of the collars, 16

Improving the drainage and irrigation (see lower right of photo) are among many improvements in progress. Completing cart path renovations to concrete paths and replace existing bridges are planned through 2017.

Built in 1915, Excelsior Springs Golf Course is one of the oldest municipal golf courses west of the Mississippi still maintaining its original layout (make sure you check out the picture on the clubhouse wall taken on opening day!) Designed by renowned golf course architect Tom Bendelow (designer of major championship courses Medinah and Olympia Fields), the Civil War Battle of Fredericksburg was fought here in 1864. A monument near the 14th green marks the site, but the “battle” Conrick and his staff fight every day to keep the course immaculate is far less perilous. “We have three different soil types in the greens,” he said. “Four push up greens built in the 50s, eight sand-based greens built in the 70s and six USGA greens built in the late 90s. Maintaining consistent greens is always a challenge, but trying to maintain consistent greens with different soil profiles makes for a ‘real’ challenge.”

newspaper, he thought the course was ‘a diamond in the rough,’” Conrick said. Head PGA Professional Tim Jarman recently told the Excelsior Springs city council, he’s never been more positive about where the course was heading than he is now. But Conrick is quick to spread the credit. “I couldn’t be happier with the dedication shown by everyone,” he said. “Great course maintenance takes great people — the maintenance department is responsible for irrigation, mowing, fertilization, pesticide applications and general upkeep of the golf course, all while communicating with the clubhouse and working around tournaments and daily play.”

Maybe the biggest improvement at Excelsior Springs is the condition of the areas around the greens. It is pristine, thanks to a change Conrick made when he arrived. “We have Zoysia fairways which stop about 30 feet from the green and a fescue/bluegrass blend between green and fairway,” he said. “When I got here, it was maintained as rough. I didn’t feel it golfer-friendly, so we lowered the height and began mowing approaches and collars at one-inch, making them much more playable, yet tougher to maintain.” Now, collars are maintains as an extension of the green and the difference shows!

At 997 feet above sea level, Excelsior Springs shot distances are critical on many of the uphill and downhill holes. At times, its seems the only flat shot you’ll have is off the tee. Notice there are no sand bunkers on the course. Another challenging, but fun, nuance to the course is the frequent elevation changes. Excelsior Springs Golf Course sits 997 feet above sea level (you’ll see the sign at the Excelsior Springs airport as you drive in), which can affect shot distances on many of the uphill and downhill shots. “Excelsior Springs was designed with the natural flow of the land in mind, allowing water to flow through the course,” Conrick said. “With elevation changes on nearly every hole, there is a good chance the only flat shot you will have is off the tee.” And thankfully, there are no sand bunkers at Excelsior Springs — the course is imposing enough without them! Excelsior Springs Golf Course is a great place to play, and as long as Conrick and his staff have anything to say about it — it will only get better! 

WinterStone “A Best Public Golf Course 2016” continued from page 11

Editorial & Photography by Bill Cromwell

The WinterStone staff accepting the “A Missouri’s Best Golf Course” for 2016. From left to right: owner Harlan Limpus, GM/Director of Golf Kane Chapman, former Superintendent Daryl Pearson and co-owner Rick Boylan.

For The Second Consecutive Year WinterStone Is Recognized as “A Missouri Best Public Golf Course.”

“This award is absolutely appreciated and gives the well-deserved recognition for the hard work and dedication by our staff to continue to be the best possible,” says Limpus. “Each year, we continue to try to improve upon the facility and level of service. Awards and accolades like this inspire and motivate everyone here to raise the bar, working enthusiastically to provide a first-class golfing experience.” “I approach my job with a great deal of pride every day. I’m rarely satisfied and always believe we can do better,” says Pearson. “But, we’re very pleased with where the course is now. Like last year, this year, golfers filled the course and gave us great comments. Harlan has given us all the tools and support we could ask for and that’s really why the course is where it is today.”

W

interStone Golf Course of Independence, MO, is once again presented with “A Missouri’s Best Public Golf Course” award for 2016.

This is the second consecutive year that WinterStone has earned the esteemed award created by Tee Times Golf Guide™ Magazine in 2015. The award recognizes select golf courses within greater Kansas City, MO. See the aforementioned criteria on page 10. WinterStone Golf Course was tagged “A Touch of the Ozarks” in 2003, the year it opened, by Bill Cromwell, Publisher of Tee Times Golf Guide Magazine. Now in its 16th year, Tee Times Golf Guide Magazine presented the award to the WinterStone staff, which includes owner Harlan Limpus, co-owner Rick Boylan, former Superintendent Daryl Pearson and General Manager/Director of Golf Kane Chapman. Harlan Limpus, the owner of WinterStone, said, “We just couldn’t be happier. For the last two years, the course has been in its best condition since we opened. We expect that to continue for many years to come.” Limpus snagged Daryl Pearson, one of Kansas City’s elite superintendents at the start of 2013. Pearson went right to work on the course with a hefty and seemingly impossible goal of having all the formerly rough greens, fairways and teeing grounds back in great shape in time for spring 2014. Mind you, more than two greens were basically lost and several others were 50-percent gone at the end of 2012. By the end of the 2013 season, remarkably, Pearson had the course looking better than ever. The course conditions are continually pristine despite the weather challenges experienced during spring of 2016. Course conditions, coupled with outstanding performances of the aforementioned criteria once again tipped the scales in WinterStone’s favor, leading to it being recognized with this Missouri’s best award. “Accolades are attributed to Daryl’s performance,” Limpus said. “There are a lot of very good superintendents out there, but I think, Daryl really stands out. He wants something as perfect as he can make it. I think our success this year and last are a result of his ability and his crew, along with all of our staff to do just a great job for us.”

22

Rick Boylan, co-owner of WinterStone and the retired President of Mid-America Golf & Landscape, the golf course builders of many KC area courses, including WinterStone, said, “Daryl and his staff, over the last three years, have groomed the conditions to a level that reflect Harlan’s dream when the course was built. I think, the public has really seen that dedication and all our efforts come together with the course and our first-class practice facility.” During the winter of 2015, WinterStone began installing the new stateof-the-art Billy Bunker system, renovating nearly half of the course bunkers. The remaining bunkers were completed by spring 2016. Those bunkers were really put to the test during the heavy rainstorms of April May and June, and they never washed out — they did what they were designed to do, cut maintenance time and cost. “Installing the Better Billy Bunker Method here is a real gamechanger for WinterStone,” said Pearson. “Our 2015/16 winter project lead by Mid-America Golf & Landscape, when we redid nearly all of our greenside sand bunkers with the system and also reshaped and flashed them so they are more visible from the fairway, has been great. Now, the bunkers give the course great playing conditions every day despite heavy rainfall — and will for years to come.” As of October 2016, Daryl Pearson has formed his own company overseeing other Kansas City area golf courses. Bryan Gandy, formerly with Blue Springs Country Club, will serve as the new Superintendent at WinterStone. (More on that story in a future issue.)

Tiffany Greens Golf Club Tiffany Greens Golf Club opened in 1999. Designed by Robert Trent Jones II. It played host to the Senior PGA Champions Tour from 1999 – 2002. As it was for the Championships, today it remains a beautifully manicured par 72 championship-rated golf course with rolling terrain and tree-lined creeks. Generous Zoysia fairways lead to superb greens. It is a fantastic course and operated as a first-class facility. Paradise Pointe Golf Complex Golf All Day at Paradise Pointe where you will find TWO excellent 18-hole golf courses and a large practice facility. The Posse Course, the original course at Paradise Pointe at Smithville Lake was designed by Edmond Ault and opened in 1982. An excellent layout that features five water hazards and several beautiful views of Smithville Lake. A par 72 with Bluegrass fairway and Bentgrass greens, it plays 6,663 yards from the back tees. The Outlaw course with Zoysia fairways is the second course to open (1994) at Paradise Pointe. The Outlaw Course is a superior public course with many holes that could be considered signature holes. Again, the Outlaw course features more beautiful views of Smithville Lake. A consistently great golf facility with excellent course conditions and superior customer service. Heritage Park Golf Course (Kansas) One of the most mature and beautiful courses in the metropolitan Kansas City area, the course layout offers an exceptional combination of traditional tree-lined and links-type holes that add variety and contrast while keeping play interesting and picturesque. Three lakes, as well as Coffee Creek, meanders through the course bringing water into play on 11 of the 18 holes. The course plays 6,876 yards from the tips and is a par 71. Its Zoysia fairways are always plush and the smooth greens are very large with challenging undulations on most. Superior customer service and course conditions. A must play golf course.  The new Tee Times Golf Guide Magazine award for “A Best Public Golf Course,” is awarded based on polling the public, course raters, writers and staff of the aforementioned criteria. Course rating forms can be found at www.TeeTimesMagazine.com. The public is encouraged to help rate courses by downloading the rating form and submitting completed forms with fair and honest ratings for any golf courses played within the Greater KC area.

Lionsgate Assistant Pro Robert Russell’s Third Golf Hall of Fame

Winner of 18 of 24 NJCAA tournaments, winning 1995 national title with eagle on final hole. Editorial and Photography by Alan Hoskins

Robert Russell’s swing has him in three Hall of Fames, the latest the NJCAA Golf Hall of Fame.

N

ow the newest member of the golf staff at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Course at LionsGate, Russell is a three-time Hall of Famer. His latest induction earlier this year — and his biggest — is into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) 2016 Hall of Fame. “This takes the cake,” said Russell. “I’m in two other Hall of Fames but they don’t get any bigger than this.” As an NJCAA Hall of Famer, he joins such current PGA luminaries as Fuzzy Zoeller, Paul Azinger, Jeff Sluman and Bubba Watson. An All-American at Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) where he wrote the most spectacular finish to a national championship in NJCAA history, Russell was inducted into KCKCC’s inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2008, he was inducted into UMKC Hall of Fame. “We’re very fortunate to have him,” says J.D. Brake, who is in his seventh year as head professional at LionsGate. 26

“We’ve been friends for a long time and played a lot of golf, and I knew he would be a great professional. When the opportunity came open here, I lobbed it in his direction and he grabbed. I feel very lucky to have him on my team.”

“No question, Robert had more talent than anyone I’ve been around on a golf course,” says Reisner, who caddied for Russell in the 1999 U.S. Open. “You can teach anyone how to swing a golf club, but you can’t teach someone how to get the ball in the hole under pressure — Robert could do that better than anyone I’ve ever seen. He had that kind of ability — ice water in his veins.”

Russell joined LionsGate after 2½ years as a teaching pro at Shamrock Hills Golf Course where he worked for General Manager Eric Reisner, a former teammate, caddy and business partner. “He won more tournaments than he lost, and I’m not sure any collegiate golfer can say that,” says Reisner, a Russell teammate at both KCKCC and UMKC. Indeed, in his two years at KCKCC, Russell won 18 of the 24 events in which he competed and was the first Jayhawk Conference golfer to win back-to-back conference championships.

That skill was made possible by great putting. “If he were on the Tour today, I think he’d be in the top 10 in putting,” says Reisner. “That’s what’s kept him competitive yet today.” At age 42, he still competes, finishing as the top money winner in Midwest PGA Section events in 2015. He’s also been a member of two of Shamrock Hills’ five Kansas Cup championship teams. “I can still swing it a little bit,” he admits. Russell’s national championship came on

Following his All-American career at KCKCC, Russell turned down scholarship offers from such elite golf powers as Oklahoma State, Alabama, Texas and Baylor to join Reisner at UMKC, where he won seven tournaments in two years and became UMKC’s first NCAA Division I national tournament qualifier. His next eight years were spent playing on the PGA Nationwide Tour and the Hooters Tour. He won a Hooters Tour event in Decatur, AL. in 1999 and finished runner-up in four other tournaments. He retired from tour golf in 2004 to enter the landscaping business without ever losing his Tour card. The highlight of his pro career also came in 1999, when he won one of two qualifying berths for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst by shooting 4-under for 36 holes at Milburn to finish second, a stroke ahead of future PGA stars Matt Gogel and Tom Perniece Jr. “I missed the cut, but playing in the U.S. Open was one of the biggest thrills of my life,” remembers Russell.

TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE December 2016

When an assistant’s job at the Jack Nicklaus Course at LionsGate came open last winter, head professional J.D. Brake (left) was quick to hire Robert Russell from Shamrock Hills. “I’m glad to have him on my team,” said Brake.

a script right out of Hollywood. Ahead by two shots heading into the final round of the 72-hole 1995 NJCAA national tournament in Scottsdale, AZ, Russell found himself on the 18th hole one shot behind Derrick Pursley of Midland, TX. “The only thing I can remember about that day was the 18th hole, and I can remember it like it was yesterday,” says Russell. “I honestly felt physically drained — I just felt helpless. I’d played well all week and I was letting it slip away.” Coming off back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 16 and 17, he got some good news. “A news guy told me that the guy closest to me [Pursley] was one under, so I figured, if I could make birdie, I’d have a good chance at a tie,” said Russell, who busted a big drive on the par 5 closing hole. To make birdie, however, Russell had a carry of 242 yards over a bunker to a peninsula green and a flag tucked behind

the bunker not more than five paces from the water. “Standing there, I knew I was one stroke back. Coach [Frank Bigham] was with me and he said, ‘Let’s layup and try to make four and see what happens.’ I said ‘Coach, I’m not going to lay up.’ I had to go for it. I hit a 3-iron, and when I hit it, it was right at the flag and I just prayed it was the right club. Because of the bunker, I couldn’t see the ball and I was afraid that maybe it had kicked right into the water.” Instead, it was the best shot of his college career. “When I got there, the ball was on the fringe 15-feet dead under the hole — I started thinking, if I can make eagle, then he [Pursley] would have to make birdie to tie me and eagle to beat me,” said Russell. The putt was dead center. “I got a good line on it and a couple feet from the hole I knew it was in. There was a ton of people around the green and they knew it was coming down to the last

hole. It was a great feeling.” “It was incredible,” Bigham said over and over. “I don’t care what tournament it is, if you make eagle to win, that’s something. What a putt! What a finish!” For Russell, the national title capped off what he called a “perfect year.” His championship lifted KCKCC to 6th in the Division I national tourney, the Blue Devils’ best finish ever “It was the way I wanted to go out, because I wanted Coach Bigham to be a part of it,” said Russell. “I owe it all to him. He’s just been great the two years I was there, and I’m just glad and fortunate that I could provide him with his first national championship. I’m really proud to have been a part of his first Top 10 team.” 
