Ellipsis is by definition understanding an idea based on the context and environment surrounding the idea. This was the precursor to the creation of this exhibit. The experience of the individual based on their ability to decipher the clues placed before them. This interaction guides the road to understand the two-artist selected and the connection they both share.
Beyond her style, her work acts as an introspective of how she views the world around her. How she interacts with that world and different situations that arise in the modern age are a big focus of her work. Kua brings a modern vision and millennial truth through her art, asking her audience to look around them and see the way our world has changed and what has become the new norm. Throughout the construction and process of bringing this exhibit to life, the single thought that was focused on was the unique way each artist interpreted their view of the world. In Joe Shusters case, Shuster crated a solution to the issues he saw occurring around himself. Avery Kua, on the other hand, handled the way she observed the world around herself by bringing the raw truth of it to the eye of her audience. The idea to have the audience interpret what they were witnessing based on the clues around them drew from both artist, their methods of perceiving the world around themselves.
Joe Shuster is a name that not many have heard of, but he fathered the creation of a name, identity and character that has reached every aspect of our world; superman. Shuster was 1 half of the team that created the iconic man of steel. Born in Toronto, Shuster would go on to create a man that would change and influence the way we see the world. Like many graphic novelist, Shuster saw the world around himself and created something that became a fantastical cure for those issues. Superman became the center of Shusters world, but Shuster had no idea how superman would go on to become the center of many people’s world too.
Ellipsis is a about letting yourself be open to what you see and feel around yourself and using that openness to understand the idea that you are becoming a part of.
Avery Kua is an up and coming graphic artist based in Toronto. Her style mirror those of Japanese artist and graphic novels. An aspect of her work focuses on pop culture and bringing it into her established style. A style that focuses on the overloading of detail and colour.

During the lowest point of his career, after losing the rights to Superman, Joe Shuster became isolated and refused to create or work anything new for quite some time. However, during this period, Shuster would go on to work on some controversial pieces. Under a secretive pen name, Shuster lent his talents to the illustration of racy and erotic images for a gentlemen’s magazine. Aptly titled, Night of Horrors, offers a view into the dark hours of Shusters life.
