a word from the editor No, this is not an old copy but rather a brand new October 2007 issue of you favourite biking magazine in KZN. First, my apologies for skipping a month or two, it’s been SO busy with the Talk 2 Me side of my business that I had no choice but to put the mag on the “pillion seat” for a while. We’re back in full force and will do our utmost best to have a mag out every month. We have a new face in Advertising Sales for the mag, yes my better half, Carin will be looking after you the advertiser and listen to you the reader as to what you’d like to see in future issues. Thank you for the warm welcome she received from those who met her this far. In the June issue we offended Lenny of C.I.T. with a remark by William in an article on page 9, I would certainly like to retract that remark and apologise to Lenny for publishing it. No harm was intended and I hope no harm was done. I also want to apologise for publishing a possible offending picture on page 36 of the June issue which might’ve been suggestive to some readers, I’m sorry. This issue is once again filled with up to date news, great product, super deals everywhere and a host of interesting articles that’ll keep you reading for a while. In the past few months we’ve had people coming off bikes, so let’s be more careful out there, change you’re attitude before the ride and do it for the fun and enjoyment of motorcycling. We’ve also had a few scandals in the biking scene putting bikers in general in a bad light, SIES MAN, this something we as members of the KZN Motorcycle Federation are trying to avoid. Let’s do what we do best; LET’S RIDE AND FEEL GREAT DOING IT, IT IS SPRING, GET OUT THERE !!!

keeping it up Maiden Voyage I’d like to address the issue of what a newbie has to confront when he buys his first motorcycle and has no more experience than successfully completing a beginner’s class (if that!). What should he do to get that scoot home? Well, first, he should ask his dealer to deliver it. If that fails? If he has a friend who already rides he could ask that friend to ride it home for him. That makes a lot of sense and allows him to graduate his riding experience one step at a time instead of via ‘immersion therapy’. I know, many first time riders do not have friends who ride or the ones they do have are not exactly role models, so often their only alternative is to ride it themselves. So, here are some thoughts for those people to consider ... Get familiar with the instruments and controls while the bike is still in the dealer’s possession - engine OFF. Sit on the saddle and practice lifting the bike off the side-stand, kicking it back out of the way, balancing (get a feel for heft) and then ‘find’ the side-stand and push it into place and LOCKED. Use your eyes to do this!!! Do not rely on the feel of it - especially before you lean the bike back onto the side-stand. Again, use your eyes to confirm that it is properly in place and locked there before you let the weight of the bike rest on it!!!!!! Now squeeze both levers and ‘work them’ (in/out, in/out) - engine OFF - to get a feel for how much pressure your hands have to use (and get used to.) Honest, you may be a 120kg Mr. Universe, but by the time you get home from your first ride your hands (especially the left one) will ache! That will quickly pass as the new demands you put on your muscles condition them. Then, insure it’s in neutral and the side-stand is UP then start that engine. Again, squeeze both levers and hold them HARD. NOTICE, PAY ATTENTION, BELIEVE that it is because you have BOTH levers squeezed that you are in complete control and not in any danger. NOTICE, PAY ATTENTION, BELIEVE that no matter what happens out there on the road if you don’t know what to do next YOU CAN ALWAYS SQUEEZE BOTH LEVERS and get out of trouble (or at the very least, minimize it.) We use 180cc bikes. They are TAME and easy to maneuver. Your scoot will almost certainly be more powerful and heavier. That means that the little ‘muscle memory’ you have developed will NOT BE APPROPRIATE!!! You must learn all over again - that is, you need to find out how much braking energy is required to stop without skidding, and you need to know EXACTLY WHERE YOUR FRICTION ZONE STARTS. So, engine running, do the beginner’s exercise - ease the clutch lever out until it just enters that friction zone and the bike tries to move forward. Allow the bike to move forward slightly, then squeeze that clutch lever and then use your legs to pull the bike back to where it started. Again, and again until you KNOW where that friction zone is. Now, remember that you can only steer at very slow speeds - like when you are leaving the dealer’s parking lot - but that thereafter you can ONLY counter-steer. ‘Push right, go right’ gets stuck in your brain and from then on that’s how you steer. If at any time the bike feels like it is ‘fighting you’, not ‘wanting’ to make the turn you want it to make, then it is time to say ‘push right, go right’ and BELIEVE IT because at that time you are fighting yourself, not the bike. Slow speed control is almost entirely in the left hand (friction zone) - while riding in a straight line the clutch lever belongs fully released, but if you are in a slow speed turn the odds are good that you should be ‘in the friction zone’ and using it to control your speed, NOT YOUR THROTTLE. Turn your head and check traffic with your EYES, not your mirrors!!! (They only tell you about danger, they do NOT tell you it is safe.) Keep your eyes UP and away from your instruments while riding. Danger is primarily in front of you, not somewhere between the speedometer and tachometer. You will have lots of time to get familiar with your instruments later. This time all you want to do is control the scoot and avoid dangerous situations. Shift conservatively - do not let your engine ‘scream at you’ or lug. Do not enjoy the scenery on the maiden voyage. Pay attention to traffic, signals, how the bike ‘sounds’, and how it reacts to throttle and brake usage. Before you know it you will be putting the puppy in your garage - mission accomplished.

LIMITED EDITION KAWASAKI ZX 14-R - East Coast Kawasaki are proud to have built the most awesome limited edition ZX 14R which seriously rocks!! The already explosive Kawasaki ZX-14 now becomes even more with the East Coast Kawasaki stage 2 conversion. The bike has had what is known as a “Stage 2 Conversion” which means that various modifications have been done to increase the horsepower to a whopping 200+ BHP! An already fast machine, this particular ZX 14-R would be one of the fastest on the road today. The cylinder head has been gas-flowed and a complete Yoshimura 4 into 1 exhaust system has been fitted, the bike emits the most amazing growl like sound and certainly would stand out from the crowd. Other racing extras which have been fitted are a Dyno-Jet Power Commander, DNA Air Filter and a De-Restrictor which results in fantastic throttle response giving a smoother, more powerful ride from low down right through the revs. A Dyno Jet quick shifter has been fitted for easy gear changing. Ian Marsh from East Coast Kawasaki decided to fit a C2P steering damper to make the bike more stable on the road – with all that power it was deemed a necessity! An Ermax bubble screen assists with extra wind protection and the gold Pre-load adjusters, Brake reservoir cap and Clutch reservoir cap finish off the look. The bike has been custom painted with gold rims, radiator fins and other finishes to make this bike a truly unique machine. To top it all off an Arai Chaser racing helmet comes complete with the deal. At a total price of R139 000 this bike would make you king of the breakfast runs.

REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER No, Honda hasn’t teamed up with the cops and no I wasn’t caught speeding, maybe illegally parked in the road to take this pic, so what, you’ll get into trouble with the locals on this bike anyway. Honda just upped the CBR’s combination of refinement, strong midrange and street smart without holding back racetrack handling. They knocked of almost 9kg causing a redisign from scratch. Footpegs were dropped a little, handlebards were raised a tad which really made my ride a little easier than some of the other 600’s out there. This is the type of bike I’d like to keep just to play on the track with and well, up and down the M? too if you know what I mean. “Ultimate Fun on Winding Roads” and “True to Function” played major roles in the complete redesign of the CBR600. FEATURES AND CHANGES The Mini-Blade is powered by a 599c, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 16V, dual stage fuel injection, inline 4-cylinder engine pushing out 88kW @ 13500rpm and 66Nm @ 11250rpm and weighing in at only 155kg. New on this 600 is the slimmer seat, more compact tail cowl and lighter-weight “Centre-Up” exhaust, significantly lighter and slimmer fine die-cast aluminium frame, longer hybrid aluminium swingarm, new lowlash transmission, smaller and lighter engine, lighter-weight fairing and the ram air duct built into the nose fron cowl not to mention the Honda Electronic Steering Damper, something only found on the 1000 until now. A more compact fully electronic instrument panel along with the Honda Ignition Security System are but a drop in the ocean compared to what they’ve done to this bike, winning major awards worldwide in its class. The CBR’s new transmission also takes full advantage of the engine’s performance characteristics for stronger acceleration while complementing the engine’s reduced torque reaction to greatly reduce the amount of gear lash felt during transitions between acceleration and deceleration. Of course, for an engine designed to be competitive on the race circuit as well as on the street, the other primary goal in the development of the CBR600RR’s new engine was gaining a stronger, more widely useable range of power and performance. Although the new CBR600RR’s riding position remains essentially unchanged, the rider’s hip position on the seat was moved rearward approximately 15mm for enhanced mass centralisation to match the positioning of the new engine, and the area where the seat joins the rear of tank has been made significantly narrower and smoother, with less protruding edges in the legs’ contact area for easier manoeuvrability, especially in competitive racing conditions. The handlebars have also been raised 10mm compared to the previous model, enhancing riding ease for a wider range of handling capability and long-term comfort. The BMW G 650 Xchallenge proves at very first sight that it has a lot to offer: This is an uncompromising off-road machine with long spring travel and not one single gram of extra weight. In its design, the BMW G 650 Xchallenge is dominated by proportions typical of a genuine Enduro - a high-lying, but smooth and flat fly line merging directly into the high and slender rear end to offer the rider the ideal seating position. Made of fracture-proof and elastic plastic (mainly polypropylene), the fairing components both light and robust are likewise ideal for tough off-road requirements. The front wheel cover is fitted directly to the lower fork bridge, giving the front wheel superior smoothness and running freedom under all conditions. The slender fairing, in turn, gracefully takes up the asymmetrically contoured headlight featuring a reflector in freeform design. Positioned off-centre, the parking light, finally, helps to provide that typical look of BMW Motorrad further enhanced by paintwork in Aura White and the blue seat. Benefiting from 270 mm spring travel both front and rear, BMW Motorradâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new Hard Enduro will easily take on any challenge off the beaten track. Tube diameter of 45 mm in turn, gives the upside-down tele-fork enormous overall stiffness, allowing a handlebar lock of 40Â°. The springs and dampers are all specially tuned for off-road use, meeting the highest demands in every respect. As a function of the riderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own weight and personal preferences, the truly ambitious Enduro rider is even able to fine-tune the dampers on their inbound and rebound strokes, the adjustment mechanisms offering predetermined rest points for smooth, consistent adjustment.

Again in the interest of minimum weight, the wheel axle measuring 20 mm in diameter is drilled hollow on both the front and rear wheel. The rear wheel suspension also allows various adjustments and set-ups, albeit of a very different character. The BMW G 650 Xchallenge features the BMW Motorrad Air Damping System, a special spring/ damper system operating exclusively with air. In its configuration and functions, the Air Damping System is the same as on the HP2 Enduro and has merely been adjusted in terms of weight and its running requirements. It almost goes without saying that the wheels and tyres also meet the typical requirements of off-road riding. Due to their better elasticity, spoke wheels come as standard on the BMW G 650 Xchallenge, offering all the features of lightweight technology. The wheel hubs made of aluminium are hollow-cast and are connected to the epoxyplated aluminium rims by extra-strong wire spokes.To build up sufficient stabilising gyro-forces on difficult and slow trails, the G 650 Xchallenge comes with a front wheel measuring 21 inches in diameter and running as standard on a 90/90-21 tyre, while at the rear an 18-inch wheel running as standard on a 140/80-18 tyre allows the use of specialised off-road tyres whenever required. Measuring a significant 300 mm in diameter at the front and 240 mm in diameter at the rear, the brake discs - and indeed, the entire brake system - are conceived without compromises for handling high loads. Apart from saving weight, the cross-drilled Wave brake discs on the G 650 Xchallenge have a better self-cleaning effect than conventional discs. And while the front wheel disc runs within a double-piston floating caliper configuration, the rear disc is held tight when required by a single piston floating caliper. With its 15-tooth pinion and a 47-tooth sprocket, the G 650 Xchallenge has a shorter final drive ratio than the other two models in the new G 650 X model range.

But nope we believe a chest protector, jacket, back protector, elbow guards, hip pads, pants, jersey, gloves, knee braces, boots and shin guards all to be more important than protecting the neck! “Crazy!” said Dr Leatt, an orthopaedic specialist, after a great friend of his had a tragic incident involving a broken neck! He proceeded to design the Leatt-brace and found backers in the USA who got moving in producing the current brace. The concept is a simple one where the ‘big’ muscles / bones support the brace which in turn support the neck in the event of the neck being hyper extended. In other words it only supports the head / neck muscles once the neck is extended slightly beyond the norm. I had the misfortune of trying this on the Kwa Nokeng trip to the Maghadi Gahdi pans.

Deep, thick sand and the inappropriate deceleration resulted in me making contact with mother earth. The medic riding behind me reckoned that I really should not have stood up after the spill. I actually felt the neck brace supporting my helmet. The only after effects was a slightly ‘bruised’ shoulder! So yes it certainly works! The entry level brace costs R2 900-00 at Gear Up and is currently available. The next level up is the R4 250-00 partly carbon fibre model whilst the top of the range will cost you close on R8 000-00 and is considerably lighter than the entry level as it is totally carbon fibre. Its also interesting to note that the brace is also being extended into the motor racing world. The go-karters I believe could be making it compulsory for racing next year. TRIUMPH SPEEDMASTER

REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER As some of you might say, “This is not something we’ve known Hein to be riding”, my response would be; like the many curios in the background of this picture you normally buy only one you really feel drawn to, and that’s the same with the Speedmaster, there are so many middleweight cruisers out there but this will be the ONE you end up taking home with you. Getting off my Busa and on to this was an adjustment at first, like “where are the foot pegs” and “where’s the ignition”, but once you get cruising with this beauty you realise what the ride is all about ... freedom and peace. The easy on the body riding style left me with a relaxed feeling of note, something simply not possible on a sports bike. FEATURES Fitted with a fuel injected, 865cc, air-cooled, DOHC, parallel twin engine delivering 61bhp @ 6800rpm and a max torque of 74Nm @ 3300rpm, you can be sure the ride will be satisfying. The fuelling injection system has been updated to meet Euro 3 legislation and it is very nicely hidden by what’s called “throttle bodies” making it look like a set of carbs ... COOL HEY! The handlebars are comfortably stretched out and fitted with high risers giving you that “mean machine” type of riding position. The new teardrop-shaped tank now has a bigger capacity, nicely finished off with the chrome badge and fitted with your typical indicator and warning lights ... right there where you need them. The Speedmaster is pulled to a stop by twin-piston callipers clamping down on the twin 310mm front brake discs and a single twin-piston calliper on a 285mm rear disc. The one-piece seat offers a very comfortable ride to the rider which will snug your but all the way down the long and winding roads you’d find yourself on with this baby. LOOKS The gloss black paint, the chrome and the matt black finish on some of the engine parts and the low-down slash cut pipes really makes the Speedmaster stand out above the rest. Both the front and rear wheels are fitted with cast aluminium alloy rims which are an absolute blessing when it comes to cleaning compared to spoke wheels, wouldn’t you agree. To quote Triumph in saying ”With its dark, brooding lines and a pared-down hot-rod essence, the Speedmaster is a standout middleweight cruiser from every angle. Punchy 865cc engine, mean looks and souped-up chassis - the Speedmaster is the very essence of an old-school street-rod, packing performance and style into one very individual motorcycle.” WHO NEEDS IT This is a real middleweight cruiser and would be suitable for the short and/or lady rider, yes boys too, wanting quality at an affordable price. KAWASAKI GTR1400

REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER As an ex FJR1300 owner I must admit I was really looking forward to this day, the day of the GTR1400. I had the pleasure of taking it up to Empangeni with my wife on the back, to really test the touring comfort and performance of this well refined machine. This is as sporty as you can get, well for now anyway, and Kawasaki thought of it all in raising the bar for all sports tourers to match up to. They’ve taken the powerful engine of the famous ZX14 and retuned it, making this the ultimate Sport Tourer to date. My wife and I found it to be extremely comfortable, great performance, a breeze to handle once you’re on the go, gear change was smooth as silk and the lowered side-view mirrors were positioned at just the right height for easy observing and offering additional wind protection on your hands. FEATURES First there is the shaft drive, a real benefit to long distance travelling, quiet and hardly any maintenance to worry about. The electric adjustable screen waves off wind and rain, providing you with a more relaxed ride just so you don’t have a stop every 200km’s to catch your breath after battling it out on the ride. The GTR comes fitted with the all new KIPASS (Kawasaki’s Intelligent Proximity Activation) which “unlocks” only your bike upon your approach and allowing a keyless start with the transmitter safely in your pocket. A unique security device you can rely on. The GTR delivers amazing torque levels right across the rev range and the variable valve timing enhances the torque to mind blowing accelerations still leaving you with a smooth top-end cruising or should I say touring speed. On the front panel you’ll find controls to adjust the headlamps and next to it a 12V socket to easily power-up electrical accessories like a GPS, a bar fridge, a hair dryer, a drill or ... don’t get carried away, this is a bike and I think a GPS will do just fine. The brakes on the GTR are linked petal brake all around, radially-mounted front callipers allied with ABS making your stopping a sure thing under any condition. They are very sharp and something you’ll miss when getting on something else afterwards. The detachable panniers with huge capacity and designed to truly integrate with the sporty lines of the GTR. The GTRs wheels also comes fitted with tyre pressure sensors, keeping you posted on what’s happening down there right in front of you on the instrument panel. Very convenient and useful for those who just fill-up with fuel and think they’re ready to hit the road. LOOKS Beautiful lines, huge headlights for the dark and haunted roads. You’ll stand looking at the GTR wondering what it is about it that draws you and then you’ll realise you are looking at a technology first in touring, waiting to match-up to your heart beat from the moment you sit on it, knowing that there is nothing like this out there. The 21st CMA FAITH RALLY was well attended by members and non-members from all over the country, even as far as Kuruman. The program was packed with events like Colours presentation Friday night, Fox Run, Games, fellowship and prize giving the Saturday with Church Service, Baptisms and a braai on the Sunday. It was well organised and the usual spot Skogheim was the venue. The spirits were high, the food was good and even some of the off-road guys and gals were allowed, something that will be seen more frequently at the Faith in the future. Well done to Rui and his team, keep it up, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needed.

NAPPY RUN 2007, hosted by CMA Durban, was once again a huge success! More than 3500 nappies were donated by the bikers in and around Durban. Some excitement was added with the games, Musical Chairs, Slow Race, etc. played at Lords & Legends in Toti. This is an annual event done for Shepherd’s Keep on the Bluff who look after abandoned HIV babies and desperately depend on this charity event and the giving hearts and attitudes of the bikers ... Well Done!!!

BOBBI BEAR RUN 2007, hosted by the KZN MF Road Captains, had a good turn-out this year. Not really “turn-out” in numbers but rather “turn-out” of biker pockets and wallets to once again give to the needy. More than R7800 was collected here and handed over to Eureka from Bobbi Bear to help fight Women and Child Abuse. It first looked like the weather was putting a damper on things but it held and it turned out to be a great day for giving and riding for a cause. Thanks to all the brothers and sisters on 2-wheels who made that day possible and to God who brought you there without incident.

But do not blame me, you gave her to me so blame her, but not me.” God then went and asked Eve, “What have you done?” Eve said, “The serpent deceived me and I ate.” “The devil made me do it,” was Flip Wilson’s favorite line. God held them both responsible for their actions. He will hold us responsible for ours. The soul that sinneth shall die. When we sin, let us ask God to forgive us, and then we should take the consequence that goes with it.
