NSW President’s Report
Congratulations to Chris, Mike and Howard for an amazing weekend of dancing at Holbrook. Lots of fun, amazing suppers, great dancing and entertainment, what more could one want! I recently attended the Just Bliss square dance club’s last dance. It was lovely to see a large number of dancers from all over Sydney support Jim Brooks who has had to close the club due to health issues. Jim is to be congratulated for the effort he has put into this club over five years and encouraged so many people to enjoy square dancing. I was able to present Jim with a framed collage of photos as a memento of his time with Just Bliss and I wish Jim all the best for the future. Just a reminder that SARDA in conjunction with the Northern NSW Association are hosting the first Wilma Flannery Memorial Dance in Armidale. It would be great to see dancers from all over Australia come to celebrate Wilma’s contribution to square dancing. All the profit from this dance will be donated in Wilma’s name for the promotion of square dancing in the northern NSW area. The 40th NSW State Convention will be held this month and the committee are working hard to ensure you have a great time. They are busy finalising last minute details. If you haven’t already, check out their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ events/362753967581801/. We are also seeking Expressions of Interest for clubs/dancers who would like to host a state convention in 2021. Don’t forget if you haven’t registered for the National in 2020 forms are available on the web page at https://www.2020sdconvention.com/. As this convention is in our home state it would be great to see lots of New South Wales dancers there. Looking forward to seeing you all at Berry. Regards
David

Club News CARPENTER & CO Caller: Gary Carpenter Congratulation to Meg & Wayne Hickson on becoming grandparents via Emma. They suffered many cold nights in the wilderness (and snow) outside of Guyra waiting for Clay to turn up. The new dancers are progressing well through the list passing the midway point in early June. The rest of us are getting ready for our annual Fancy Dress night and the Berry State Convention. On a personal note I’m moving onto the retirement phase of life so I should have more time for travel and grandsons. See you on the dance floor. CLOVERLEAF DANCERS Tamworth Aaron and Michelle are still recovering from a serious car accident three weeks ago. A P plate driver came through a give way sign and wrote their Yaris off. The other driver was 22km over the speed limit and also was mid range pca. A number of dancers have helped Aaron and Michelle in various ways since they were released from hospital. Both still have ongoing problems yet to be resolved. They don't expect to be back dancing for at least a month. Fay is also out of action with stitches in her ankle, and will also need some weeks to recover. Meanwhile we continue on with learning some Plus moves when we have the dancers. Many thanks to Margaret Piper who is sometimes able to assist. We welcome new dancer Terri to our ranks. Terri moved to Tamworth from Sydney about a year ago. We are glad to have her join us. HENRY KENDALL SQUARES Caller: Les Heaton Cold nights just right for dancing, warm halls and great calling from all callers through out the state. Les looking after Brian Hotchkies clubs while Brian is away overseas. Birthday greetings to Shirley, Heather and Bob. Christmas in July with plenty of supper for everybody, Bob keeping us singing along with his guitar in hand with lots of smiles on all the faces. Now looking toward Berry and the NSW State Convention. See you all on the dance floor. HILLBILLIES SQUARES Beecroft. Callers: Vickie and Steve Arrie is back in rehab and she’s doing a lot better. Charles has had surgery on his knee and it seems to be coming along all right. A lot of our dancers went to Just Bliss for their final dance and all had a great time, it was sad that Jim has had to close. Once again we have not danced one night during the school holidays as the floor had to be upgraded. Happy birthday to everyone who is having birthdays this August. Page 4

61st ANSDC Update
Our Committee had a fabulous time at the Halfway Dance at Holbrook! Many thanks to Chris, Howard and Mike for allowing us to do a special draw for dancers who had registered early. If you weren’t there on the Saturday evening and you haven’t checked our Facebook page recently, then I’m proud to announce the winner of the Fantastic Aussie Tours ten day bus trip for two valued up to $6,580.00 is Terry Williams from Western Australia. Terry just couldn’t believe his luck and thought it was a hoax call when David Todd rang to tell him the news! Terry said that he’d never won anything in his life before, and shared with us his other special news, that he was getting married to the lovely Dorothy! What a wonderful honeymoon gift for them! A big congratulations to Terry and Dorothy!!! At the end of the early bird time we have 423 dancers registered including two junior dancers. This includes thirty-eight callers, fourteen cuers and three clogging cuers. You will all know people who still may be umming and arhing about coming. Maybe they have never been to a National Convention before. We are looking into a special welcome and introduction for National Convention first timers! So if you or your dancing friends have never experienced a National Convention before, maybe its time to take the plunge! Although I’ve only been square dancing since 2016, I’ve now been to the past two National Conventions and I love the atmosphere and being part of such a big event with hundreds of people all dancing together to great music in their lovely costumes! The committee are all working very hard to make this a fun and friendly convention for everyone and especially those new to National Conventions. Stay tuned to see what we have in stall for you. Keep up to date with information on local attractions and other 2020 Convention news Check out our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/43485769360753 5/?ref=bookmarks and website www.2020sdconvention.com. .If you are not already receiving our news letter then you can view all our newsletters on the website too! Club News KNEE DEEP SQUARES Chris & Linda Froggatt We have had quite a few members on the injured and sick list over the past months. It was lovely to see Lyndall & Carol back dancing and we look forward to seeing Lily back with us soon. Our get-well wishes to Emily who had a bad bleed in her eye, but due to the wonders of modern surgery is improving with her sight each day. Also wishing Nita a speedy recovery after her fall and stay in hospital. Happy travels Helen & Roy off on a cruise of Canada and Alaska. At the end of July we will be celebrating our clubs 29th birthday with an Elvis and Abba theme, so we are looking forward to seeing costumes of all who dress up for this fun night. Happy birthday wishes to: Linda, Tedda, Jeanette, Jan C. MOUNTAIN DEVILS Caller: David Todd The aroma of soup wafting from the kitchen made it difficult to concentrate on our favourite singing calls at our recent Soup and Damper Night. It was great to have Pattie and Paul from Wesley join us and Lynn and Ed from Southside Rounds plus lots of other visitors including Lavinia & Rossie. The Holbrook Halfway Dance was a great event. The Interstate Olympics was lots of fun. Victorian dancers are obviously much better at ‘Bra Pong’ than NSW dancers. Looks like we need more practise! Dancers who attended enjoyed the Christmas in July Dance at Randwick with the Just Bliss dancers and caller Jim. PANTHER SQUARES Caller: Maree Huffadine Accolades galore to Chris Froggatt, Howard Cockburn, Mike Davey and helpers for a wonderful three day weekend at Holbrook for the inaugural Half Way Dance. Plenty of dancing, great calling, fun & games on the weekend. Many visits to the infamous Holbrook Bakery. Dancers from our club have already registered & booked accommodation for next year’s anticipated extravaganza. Great to have some beautiful winter days recently. Continue to dance two squares plus in the cooler evenings. Congratulations to Vince & June on the arrival of another great grandchild. Ron & Molly heading to the Gold Coast for some warmer times & relaxation. Excitement building as we move to the 40th NSW State Convention in Berry later this month. Birthday greetings this month to Suzanne & Helen. Happy dancing everyone. Page 6

Holbrook Halfway Dance Everyone had a fabulous time at the Holbrook Halfway Dance .This was a weekend run jointly by us along with Howard & Brenda Cockburn and Mike & Lorraine Davey . Our aim was to have a fun dance weekend halfway between Melbourne & Sydney. There was truly a buzz of anticipation of fun and enjoyment as the weekend began. Seventeen squares of dancers enjoyed Mainstream and Plus dancing starting Friday night and this continued during Saturday afternoon, Saturday night and Sunday morning. The dance floor was full at all sessions. Saturday morning was the Halfway Olympics with skilful games, to see which state could take home the coveted “Yellow Submarine” trophy. Alas this year it went to our Melbourne dancers. It was a neck and neck battle of 7-7 up till the game of “Bra Pong” and unfortunately the Melbournians proved their prowess was greater at this challenge. NSW will have to put in a lot of practice for next year, to retrieve the Yellow Submarine trophy that was craftily made by Chris!! Everyone enjoyed the suppers each night that were prepared by Linda, Brenda & Lorraine and we were also well fed at the local RS club on Saturday evening. The after party entertainment by Chris, Mike and Howard was thoroughly enjoyed, especially when Mike interviewed Elvis to get his true thoughts on how he was feeling since Priscilla had left him. After the dance session on Sunday morning, we enjoyed a lovely sausage sizzle, with more slices and cakes before we departed north and south to our respective destinations. As organisers we were truly overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone’s comments as to just how much they had enjoyed our weekend and with so many requests for us to “do it again” next year, we have booked the venue for the end of June 2020. Special thanks goes to the 12 other callers who supported our weekend. We look forward to working together next year to give you another great, fun filled weekend of square dancing! Chris & Linda Froggatt

My “Just Bliss” Experience. Having danced for a few short years as a teenager, I was reintroduced to square dancing in the early 1990’s. My partner Laurel and I were equally enthusiastic and we progressed together as dancers to the Plus and then the A1 and A2 levels. However, it was not until ill health caused Laurel to stop dancing that I seriously considered trying to call. I have done several of the Brian Hotchkies caller schools organised by our late, wonderful Wilma Flannery, the first as far back as 2007. However, my first serious efforts at calling were not until the 2009/2010 period. These involved a stint filling in as caller for the “Newport Ocean Waves Club” and a period during which I ran a small daytime group at the Bondi Senior Citizens Centre. Those early efforts must have been pretty poor, as I am very regularly told how much my calling has since improved !! An advantage of living in the Eastern Suburbs at Randwick is that it is “sort off” central, no matter where a dance venue might be - North, South or West. The disadvantage has been for some time, that absolutely nothing is at all close, irrespective of direction. It was this that sparked my enthusiasm to start something locally and thus, JUST BLISS began. I had 2 major concerns, namely: ** My ability to successfully take on the establishment and running of a new club, at my age. But more importantly, ** My capacity at my age to become a reasonably competent and successful caller, given all that is required to achieve that. Despite these reservations, I had strong encouragement from Brian and Wilma from Barry Wonson and from Association President David Todd, as well as several other callers, to take the plunge, go for it and start my own club. However, I think I was both encouraged and pushed hardest to proceed by Brett Gill, who has to a large degree been both my calling mentor and occasional critic. So, I would like to especially thank all of those callers, but particularly Brett, David and Brian. I could not have done it without all of your help and support. Page 10

During the time of the club’s operation, we have had both good times and some periods of struggle. But, we have introduced square dancing to quite a lot of people and we have achieved quite a few very successful highlight events of which I am quite proud. Given this, despite my disappointment and the fact that I would prefer to be successfully continuing, I am quite satisfied and have no regrets about closing after nearly six years. Thank you to all the visitors who have enthusiastically supported the various club functions we have held, especially those who have travelled such long distances just to do so. I was more than happy with our “Christmas in July” closure function. If you attended, I hope you enjoyed it and I again thank everyone who did, for giving us your support and enthusiasm. I hope I will continue to see you all on the dance floor. JIM BROOKS.

Solo Dancers Recently I had the pleasure of visiting the Coffs Harbour Square Dance Club and was warmly welcomed by all. Gordon keeps everyone motivated and the dances chosen (from their CD collection) are aimed to keep members happy and dancing at their appropriate level. They are a fun loving group and visitors are most welcome at their Tuesday afternoon session. Likewise, a couple of weeks ago, two dancers from Victoria visited the Tamworth Cloverleaf Dancers club and it was nice to have them join us. So, my message to Solo Dancers (and others) is – when you are travelling or going away somewhere check if there is a club in the vicinity and see if you can make a visit. Do not think you are imposing or will not be welcome. Attendance numbers at clubs might be down due to illness or the weather and extra dancers help to fill the square. The 40th NSW Convention at Berry is next on the agenda and the Solo Dress-Set is almost ready to Square-up. Thank you to those who have already volunteered. There is still much dancing to do before the year ends, so check the “What’s On” pages. During August I will be going to dances at Berry and Woolgoolga, then, in October there’s Newcastle and Armidale. Have fun, enjoy square dancing and keep smiling. National Square Dance Information Line 1800 643 277 Many people have asked “how does the 1800 line work” so I have decided to put out some information to clear up any misconceptions. The 1800 service is based in New South Wales as it was started originally by NSW in 1998 and then later passed on to the National Square Dance Society. These calls to the 1800 number can be made from a land line or mobile, both of which are at no cost to the caller. It was set up to provide a single access point for people to find information about Square Dancing. Committees change, contact numbers change but the 1800 number does not. The service is a National service and is financed by the National Square Dance Society of Australia. It is serviced through a dedicated line to my home, independent of my own services. If I am home, I will answer the calls but, if not, the calls go to a message bank and are answered ASAP by me. If I am away for a significant time, I arrange that the service be checked by one of our committee members who can call into the message bank and retrieve/respond to any messages. I have two contacts for each state to whom I pass these messages as required. If I am home and answer the call and cannot directly assist the caller, I ask them if they would like me to pass their request on to a state representative. Alternatively, I can give them the two contacts and they can call directly. Most people take this latter option. If your club is having a promotion, you are more than welcome to use the 1800 number in your advertising. All that I ask is that you please let me know as it can be very embarrassing and unprofessional if I do not know what they are talking about. I would also need a direct contact for detailed information as required. For example, sometimes I get asked if access to the venue is via “XXXX” street or “YYYY” street. The important thing is that I be kept informed when you refer to the 1800 service. We are here to help you as a response point for your advertising and to refer people to you. If you have any questions, please give me a call. Pauline Hansford, Public Relations Officer, National Square Dance Society of Australia

Alannah Smith ACF Public Relations
Hello again all, Things are gearing up again in the ACF after the National. Discussions on various topics are underway, including the national program sub-committee’s first draft manual on how to program a national, which is expected by early November. It’s membership updating time and the ACF Web master has been working hard to make sure our website is ready for members to update their information. Members need to remember that the changes to the eligibility criteria means they need to include calling hours when updating their information this year. State Coordinators should have their instructions by now on how to update entries, and can send them out to members. Remember that ACF and APRA renewal fees are also due by 1st August too. A draft three year plan, linked to the ACF Mission Statement, will soon be with ACF board members for comment too. Watch this space for further information. The 2020 Caller Conference continues to gather momentum. It should be great! If you haven’t already booked in, make sure you do so ASAP, and encourage ACF members in your state to also book in. This is a fantastic opportunity for callers to get together, learn and challenge themselves to improve themselves and their craft. Clubs and State Associations, you can show your support for the hard work that your callers put in by helping send them to the conference. Callers have many expenses, which they usually absorb as it goes hand in hand with the love of what they do. But clubs and associations can help with these opportunities to enthuse and educate their callers. Have a sausage sizzle or something to raise some money. Your investment will be well and truly repaid by what your caller/s bring back from the experience. Trust me… Speaking of supporting and encouraging new and upcoming callers in practical ways, this was shown recently by callers Howard Cockburn, Mike Davey and Chris Froggatt. These three generous callers gave visiting callers and trainees an opportunity to call to the 140-odd crowd at their terrific inaugural Halfway Dance weekend in Holbrook at the end of June. Many thanks to Howard, Mike, Chris and helpers. We’re not the only ones who have already booked in again for next year. Lastly, we are very much looking forward to the 40th NSW State Square and Round Dance Convention in Berry in August. It should be a great weekend. Stay warm! Cheers Alannah Page 22

Round Dancing News Recently Carol Simondson and Paula & Warwick Armstrong attended three big Round Dance events- first Roundalab Convention in Montgomery, Alabama, then on to the USA Square and Round Dance National in Atlanta, Georgia and, lastly, the International Choreographed Ballroom Dance Association (ICBDA) Convention in Orlando, Florida. Australia is so fortunate to have such dedicated and talented cuers and teachers. Congratulations to Carol Simondson who received her ten year teaching award from Roundalab at the convention in Montgomery. Then at the 2019 Round Dance Showcase at the 68th NSDC Paula & Warwick presented and choreographed a beautiful waltz for “Now When the Rain Falls.” You can view this at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftUheqocVqg&list=PLBX3Q4WnzeTEqNBrS0PtPrY IqSMWmLlHj&index=8&t=0s&fbclid=IwAR2C_Yt8o-LhWotDVLlbleBf2ZTpuoBhEY3R_ S1h6u2Pk7DYon1nYHmQF6s&app=desktop In Orlando at the International Choreographed Ballroom Association Convention where choreographers present their dances. Paula & Warwick had two of their dances selected in the “Top 15”. The Top 15 dances are those dances that receive the most votes from dancers who attend the convention. In fact “A Thousand Years” which Paula & Warwick choreographed is number one on the Phase III and IV dance list. “Capone” which they also choreographed was on the Top 15 list for Phase V and VI dances. Congratulations on such an amazing achievement!

Tasmanian President’s Report What a great time was had by all at the National Convention in Deloraine. The weather was perfect. The floor was magnificent. All the callers and cuers put on a great show which all of the dancers enjoyed immensely. Well done to the committee and all the helpers who put in an enormous amount of time to make the event the success that it was. On June 22nd Launceston Square Dance Club held their 68th birthday dance. What a celebration. Everyone had a fantastic time dancing mainstream, plus and rounds. Trent, Di, Frank and Glenn kept the floor moving. Launceston Club is truly blessed to have such a talented group. The supper was magnificent. I’m sure that no-one went home hungry. Daniella made a wonderful birthday cake. All in all it was a night of fun, friendship and lots of dancing. The next Society Dance will be held at the end of August at the CWA Hall, Lincoln Street, Lindisfarne. Our special guest caller is Glenn Wilson from Queensland. Glenn has been calling for 20 plus years. He has called at thirteen Australian National Conventions. He has been very involved with the Queensland Callers Association, Australian Callers Federation and Callerlab. I look forward to seeing everyone there. It will be an event not to miss. Casino City Club is in winter recess due to John Weatherburn having to go to England upon the death of his brother. Hopefully he will return soon. Until next time. Kaye PRESIDENT

ACT President’s Report Kerr-Ly-Qs are currently enjoying their Winter break in lovely Canberra. Before Kerr-LyQs went on break they celebrated their 40th Birthday. We were lucky enough to have Jaden Frigo and Barry Wonson attend this dance which made it a great night of dancing. Raymond attended the North Coast Callers School in Lismore this year with Matthew Mills instructing it. He gained a lot more knowledge and renewed enthusiasm for calling from this school. Most recently a number of our dancers attended the inaugural Halfway Dance held in Holbrook, NSW. Thanks to Howard, Mike and Chris for making it such a great weekend of dancing. It wasn’t all dancing though, with the Halfway Olympics being held on the Saturday morning for some fun and games. Congratulations to Victoria on winning the trophy. Maybe NSW can take it out next year! Best wishes and safe travels for all those who will be travelling to Berry for the 40th NSW State Convention. Have a great time! Queensland President’s Report Greetings dancers. With the weather settling down to a warmer version, with an occasional cold night, the numbers reported around the clubs are picking up again. We are getting very few single figure temperatures at night here in Brisbane and we are feeling sorry for those living south of us who are getting the very cold nights. Anybody seeking warmer climate are welcome to come join us at the Queensland State Convention September 6-8 in Rockhampton. We are looking forward to catching up with all the dancers, both Queenslanders and those who are visiting from interstate and overseas. Just be aware we do occasionally get the cooler nights! Elaine Davis has reported that the numbers are building on Wednesday times at Buderim and is enjoying having the interstate visitors joining in while they are holidaying on the Sunshine Coast. A big thank you to Elaine and Bribie Squares for stepping forward to host the caller’s Gala Afternoon and the Sunshine State Roundup in the evening to be held at the hall at Kallangur on the last Saturday in September. All visitors from interstate who happen to be in Brisbane at the time are also welcome to attend this event. To make it easier for all to attend, this event is being held in an outer Brisbane suburb rather than on Bribie Island itself. Congratulations to Glenn Wilson for 25 years of calling being acknowledged by Callerlab. Both his clubs are increasing in numbers regularly and is in great demand doing events in places like Hervey Bay, Tasmania and New Zealand. Many dancers helped Anne and George Stevens celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary at Gumdale Grandsliders. There was a full hall with seven sets attending this night. Gumdale also held their 32nd birthday. We were very interested to see and read the congratulatory greetings from many dignitaries including the Queen, the Prime Minister, Scott Morrison and the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. By the time you read this Burleigh Squares would have held their 31st birthday event with Barry Wonson as guest caller. I am sure this would have been a great night’s entertainment. Barry always delivers an entertaining evening for the dancers. Catch you on the dance floor Russell Wall, President Queensland Dancing Society squaredanceqld.president1@gmail.com

Laughter is the Best Medicine A boy asks his father, “Dad, are bugs good to eat?” “That’s disgusting. Don’t talk about things like that over dinner,” the dad replies. After dinner the father asks, “Now, son, what did you want to ask me?” “Oh, nothing,” the boy says. “There was a bug in your soup, but now it’s gone.” Mr. and Mrs. Brown had two sons. One was named Mind Your Own Business & the other was named Trouble. One day the two boys decided to play hide and seek. Trouble hid while Mind Your Own Business counted to one hundred. Mind Your Own Business began looking for his brother behind garbage cans and bushes. Then he started looking in and under cars until a police man approached him and asked, “What are you doing?” “Playing a game,” the boy replied. “What is your name?” the officer questioned. “Mind Your Own Business.” Furious the policeman inquired, “Are you looking for trouble?!” The boy replied, “Why, yes.” Q: Why did the witches’ team lose the baseball game? A: Their bats flew away. Page 30

South Australia Delegate’s Report Farmers and gardeners all over southern Australia feel a sense of optimism as green shoots appear with the first rains after the long stretch of heat and dryness. A fresh, new square dance club has emerged too, based at the RSL Hall at Salisbury, a northerly suburb of Adelaide. “Diggers’ Delights” might sound like the name of a gardening club, but no, it’s named in honour of the veterans whose hall the group meets in. The result of the drive and enthusiasm of SASDS Membership Secretary, Karen Dempsey, with Murray Dempsey and caller Peter Scott, the Diggers’ Club has been meeting every Thursday afternoon for the past few months. The RSL veterans are delighted to see their hall used by a regular and avid group of dancers and Diggers’ Club membership has already grown to almost three “sets” (aka 24 people). They also have a dedicated Facebook page. The annual SASDS and SACA combined dance is traditionally held each July. This year’s theme was “The Best of British”. Red-whiteand-blue outfits and Union Jack bunting filled the Marion RSL Hall - another example of veterans’ graciousness in lending their hall to host square dancing. Seen amongst the crowd were two bejewelled “queens”, one looking somewhat Russian in a Tsarina’s crown and floor-length ermine-trimmed robe. There were also a couple of “Yorkshire men” wearing tweed cap, white shirt and braces. The National Convention 2022 is to be hosted by South Australia, and the expert team who’ll coordinate the event was announced during the evening. In mid-August this year, South Australia’s 44th State Convention, “Click go the Shears” is being held in Naracoorte, a regional centre renowned for producing wool and related products. Naracoorte’s proximity to Victoria’s westerly border has encouraged number of Victorian dancers to register. Registrants now number over 100, but there are still accommodation options available at or near Naracoorte and it’s not too late to become part of the fun. When a dancer goes down, a second dancer attends him/her. Remaining couples join hands and take a step backward. This will allow the injured person and attendant air and room. Raise joined hands as high as possible in the form of an arched circle. On seeing this signal, the caller or hall monitor will immediately place an Emergency Call for Medical Aid.
