d Sheeran says it “feels weird” to think that about one in 23 people in Australia will see him perform on his record-breaking stadium tour. The English musician has officially sold a record one million tickets for his 18-show Divide tour of Australia and New Zealand, smashing Dire Straits’ record of 950,000 set in 1986. “I do actually think it’s my biggest market - this and Ireland,” Sheeran told reporters in Perth on Thursday. “It feels weird to have one in 23 people come to a show, that does feel odd. “But it’s best not to think about it. It’s best just to take it one show at a time.”

TO ABOLISH ABUSE FOUR PEOPLE DEAD FROM VIC COMPENSATION LISTERIA IN VIC, NSW LOOPHOLE
nother person has died from listeria, taking Australia’s rockmelonrelated death count to four. A total of 17 listeria cases were confirmed across eastern states, with two deaths each in Victoria and NSW. Details of the latest death, including age, gender and precise location of the victim, were not revealed. The listeria outbreak is linked to a rockmelon grower at Nericon, in the NSW Riverina.
The producer agreed to stop distribution after being told about the contamination almost two weeks ago. But the NSW government and health authorities were accused of taking too long to warn the public after investigations began in January. Listeria begins with flu-like symptoms including fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhoea, which can take days or weeks to appear following the consumption of contaminated produce.
MALKA LEIFER COULD BE FREED IN ISRAEL
n Israeli court has ruled that former Melbourne school principal Malka Leifer, who is accused of child sex crimes, could be freed from custody into home detention. Melbourne woman Dassi Erlich, who has accused Leifer of abusing her, told AAP on Wednesday night she was “absolutely outraged” at the ruling as relayed to her by friends in the courtroom in Jerusalem. Victorian police are seeking Leifer’s extradition to Australia on 74 charges of child sexual abuse. “The judge has ordered she be released on bail at 10am on Friday morning and at this moment the judge’s order has absolutely no restrictions on her freedom. Nothing,” Ms Erlich said. She said Leifer’s lawyer, Yehuda Fried, brought in Rabbi Yitzchak Dovid Grossman who said it was humiliating for her to be in custody and he would take care of the former educator.
he Victorian government says it will abolish the so-called Ellis defence, an “unfair legal loophole” which has prevented child sexual abuse survivors from suing organisations like the Catholic Church. Under proposed laws unveiled on Tuesday, unincorporated associations, such as churches, would have to nominate an entity able to pay damages. “This deals with what is something that I think has re-traumatised victims and survivors for too long, something that has made a terrible set of circumstances even harder,” Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters. Mr Andrews says for too long “there’s been this veil, this fiction, that in the case of, say, the Catholic Church” there is nobody who can be sued. “We know, of course, that there are considerable, indeed enormous, resources that are available to the Catholic Church.”

VIC DETECTIVE FACING VIC RADIO HOST weapons, leak charges
Victorian detective has been charged with multiple offences, including having prohibited weapons and leaking secret police information. Corruption watchdog IBAC charged the detective senior constable on Thursday with offences including seven counts of improperly taking advantage of a regulated person’s position, two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon, and one count of unlawful disclosure of police information. The alleged offending, dating back to 2015, follows an IBAC investigation and the matter is due before the Dromana Magistrates’ Court on April 5.
BURNS ADMITS DRINK-DRIVING
elbourne breakfast radio host John Burns has been convicted of drink driving and had his licence stripped for 12 months for getting behind the wheel after “one or two” too many wines at a charity event. The 3AW presenter stopped at a booze bus at Glen Iris in Melbourne’s east on his way home from a charity function for children with cerebral palsy in October and blew a blood-alcohol reading of 0.061. “I was a bit careless in the fact that I obviously had one or two too glasses too many and I’m now suffering because of my stupidity,” Burns said outside Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.
VIC COP CHARGED WITH HISTORIC SEX CRIMES
Victorian policeman has been charged with historical sexual offences that allegedly occurred west of Melbourne in the 1980s. The officer from the North West Metro Region has been
suspended with pay following an investigation by the force’s professional standards command. He is expected to face Geelong Magistrates’ Court on April 13.

VIC GOV’T VOWS WEST GATE WORKS RESTART
orkers forced to down tools on Melbourne’s $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel site after parliament revoked planning approval will return to the job, the government has vowed. The Liberals and Greens joined forces to axe planning approval for the controversial road, being built in partnership with toll road giant Transurban. After Melbourne’s west became gridlocked after a truck jackknifed and blocked four lanes on the West Gate Freeway, Roads Minister Luke Donnellan attacked the revocation. “It is simply not acceptable for the Liberal Party and the Greens to put their head in the sand and say we don’t need a second river crossing,” Mr Donnellan told reporters. “We will today seek a second planning scheme amendment from the minister for planning and we intend to get back to work.”
Porn star sues Trump over ‘hush agreement’
dult-film actress Stormy Daniels is suing US President Donald Trump, alleging he never signed a nondisclosure agreement to keep her quiet about an “intimate” relationship between them. Trump has denied having an affair with Daniels. Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has claimed she had sex with Trump once and then carried on a yearslong platonic relationship. The lawsuit, which Clifford’s lawyer Michael Avenatti published in a tweet, says she signed both the agreement and a side letter using her stage name on October 28, 2016, days before the 2016 US presidential election. Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen signed the document the same day, but Trump never signed the document, the lawsuit claims. The “hush agreement” as it is called in the lawsuit refers to Trump as David Dennison and Clifford as Peggy Peterson. The side letter agreement reveals the
true identities of the parties as Clifford and Trump, according to the lawsuit. Clifford asks in the lawsuit for the Los Angeles County Superior Court to declare the agreement and side agreement invalid and unenforceable. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. According to the lawsuit, Clifford and Trump had an intimate relationship that lasted from the summer of 2006 well into 2007, including meetings in Lake Tahoe and at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Daniels was quoted in a 2011 interview with In Touch Weekly magazine that she had an affair
with Trump after they met at a Lake Tahoe golf tournament in 2006. Cohen has said he paid Clifford $US130,000 ($A182,000) of his own money in 2016, the year Trump was elected president, but said neither the Trump Organisation nor Trump’s campaign was a party to the transaction, though he declined to say publicly what it was for.

Takata airbag saga went on too long: NRMA PHILIP MORRIS
WORKERS ON CHOPPING BLOCK
ar manufacturers should have done more to track down and replace potentially deadly Takata airbags before the Australian government ordered a compulsory national recall, motorists group the NRMA says. Nearly four million cars fitted with the defective airbags will need to be fixed in one of the largest recalls in Australian history. The devices have been linked to 23 deaths around the world including one in Australia. NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury supports the recall which his organisation has long called for. “It has absolutely taken far too long to reach this stage,” he told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday. “When you have airbags killing people globally, that is something that needs to be addressed immediately.” The fault in the airbags lies within its propelling mechanism, which becomes defective when exposed to high levels of moisture and can scatter shards of metal upon activation.
In this Tuesday, June 23, 2015, file photo, while speaking during a Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee hearing in Washington, Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., points to the injury on a victim who was hit by shrapnel when a car’s Takata air bag inflated.
Mr Khoury said part of the difficulty with the recall was tracking down affected vehicles which may have been sold multiple times. “The sheer scale of this recall has had an impact on the manufacturers’ ability to fix the cars - to find the cars - but that is no excuse,” Mr Khoury said. “This has gone on for way too long.” The NRMA plans to help manufacturers contact impacted motorists. Mr Khoury encouraged drivers
to call carmakers if they are unsure if their vehicle has a faulty airbag. “Just because you don’t get a letter doesn’t mean your car is not affected.” The order affects vehicles made by Ford, GM Holden, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ferrari, GMC, Honda, Jeep, Lexus, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, Volvo and Hino Trucks.
obacco giant Philip Morris is slashing its Australian workforce, with up to 150 jobs across the nation on the chopping block. The cuts will mainly affect sales representatives, but the company hopes to transfer some of the 150 staff into other roles. Philip Morris put Tuesday’s announcement down to a changing retail landscape which didn’t require as many boots on the ground. “This decision was taken only after a rigorous assessment of the current operating environment in Australia,” managing director Tammy Chan said in a statement. “We will treat all affected employees with dignity and the utmost respect throughout the process. This includes generous compensation packages and career transition support.” In 2014, the company cut about 180 jobs when it moved its Moorabbin cigarette factory, in Melbourne’s southeast, to South Korea.

PAPA CONSIDERS APPEALING BRAIN MEMORY STOPS GROWING AT ADOLESCENCE
GREEK SENTENCE N B risbane defender Avraam Papadopoulos may appeal his suspended two-anda-half year jail sentence for by a Greek court for illegally betting on matches while playing at Olympiakos. Agence France-Presse reports Papadopoulos was one of 58 people punished by the threemember Court of Appeal in Athens for their roles in the ‘Koriopolis’ match-fixing scandal in 2011. The Roar, who were aware of the
centre-back’s implication when they recruited him, are awaiting further advice from Football Federation Australia before deciding on the next course of action. For now he will play in Saturday’s home clash against Adelaide, with coach John Aloisi pledging to stand by the 33-yearold. “As a coach all I’ll do until then is stand by my player and support him in every way I can,” Aloisi said.

Cyclone clusters rage over Jupiter’s poles
upiter’s poles are blanketed by geometric clusters of cyclones and its atmosphere is deeper than scientists suspected. These are just some of the discoveries reported by four international research teams on Wednesday, based on observations by NASA’s Juno spacecraft circling Jupiter. One group uncovered a constellation of nine cyclones over Jupiter’s north pole and six over the south pole. The wind speeds exceed category-five hurricane strength in places, reaching 350km/h. The massive storms have not changed position much or merged since observations began. Team leader Alberto Adriani of Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics in Rome was surprised to find such complex structures. Scientists thought they would find
something similar to the six-sided cloud system spinning over Saturn’s north pole. Instead, they found an octagon-shaped grouping over the north pole, with eight cyclones surrounding one in the middle, and a pentagon-shaped batch over the south pole. Each cyclone measures several thousand kilometres across. The fifth planet from our sun, gas giant Jupiter is by far the largest planet in our solar system. Launched in 2011, Juno has been orbiting Jupiter since 2016 and peering beneath the thick ammonia clouds. It’s only the second spacecraft to circle the planet; Galileo did it from 1995 to 2003. Another of the studies in this week’s journal Nature finds that Jupiter’s crisscrossing east-west jet streams actually penetrate thousands of kilometres beneath the visible cloud tops.

In this Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006 file photo, Sergei Skripal speaks to his lawyer from behind bars seen on a screen of a monitor outside a courtroom in Moscow. It has been reported on Monday, March 5, 2018 by the British media that Skripal is in critical condition after exposure to ‘unknown substance’ in English city of Salisbury.
ormer Russian military intelligence officer Sergei Skripal, who was convicted in 2006 of spying for Britain, is critically ill after exposure to an unidentified substance in Britain, a source close to the investigation says. Skripal, once a colonel in Russia’s GRU military intelligence, was convicted in Russian of betraying agents to British intelligence before he was later swapped as part of a Cold War style spy swap in Vienna in 2010. Police said two people had been found unconscious on a bench on Sunday in the city of Salisbury. The two people were Skripal, 66, and a woman aged in her 30s. They did not have any visible injuries, police said in a statement. They were being treated for “suspected exposure to an unknown substance” and they remained critically ill, police said. It was unclear what the substance was. However, the incident was not being investigated by counter-
terrorism police but officers have an open mind about its cause, a local police official said. “This has not been declared as a counter-terrorism incident and we would urge people not to speculate,” Wiltshire police’s Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Craig Holden told reporters on Monday. “However, I must emphasise that we retain an open mind, and that we continue to review this position.” Relations between Britain and Russia have been strained since the murder of ex-KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006, a killing which a British inquiry said was probably approved by President Vladimir Putin. Skripal was sentenced in Russia to a 13-year prison term before he was pardoned in 2010 as part of a spy swap with the US. The swap took place on the tarmac of Vienna airport where a Russian and a US jet parked side by side before the agents were exchanged.
MAN ACCUSED OF STEALING 2.3KG OF GOLD
man has been accused of stealing more than 2.3kg of gold from West Australian mine sites where he was working. It is alleged the man took the gold, then sold it over
multiple occasions in Perth and Kalgoorlie between June 2015 and December 2016. Police have charged a 38-year-old Somerville man with possession of stolen or unlawfully obtained property.
Smoking ape riles anger against Indon zoo BARBRA STREISAND
video of an orangutan smoking has brought more criticism for a zoo
in Indonesia infamous for past animal welfare troubles. In the video shot on Sunday,
a young man flicks his halfsmoked cigarette into the primate’s enclosure. It’s picked up by the reddishbrown primate, who expertly puffs on it to laughter from the crowd. Activist Marison Guciano says the smoking ape is further evidence of a lack of supervision and education at Bandung Zoo, southwest of Jakarta. The man committed a crime but the privately owned zoo was mainly responsible because of its ignorance of supervision and education for visitors, Guciano said. The zoo has repeatedly made headlines for starving and sick animals. It was temporarily closed in 2016 after a Sumatran elephant that died was found to have bruises on its body. A change.org petition calling for Bandung Zoo to be closed has nearly one million signatures. “We very much regret that such a thing happened,” Zoo spokesman Sulhan Syafi’I said, adding the incident was reported to police.
CLONES BELOVED DOG
arbra Streisand has two new pups after having her beloved 14- year-old pooch Samantha cloned after her death in 2017. Streisand told Hollywood trade publication Variety in an interview published on Tuesday that cells were taken from the mouth and stomach of the Coton de Tulear dog. “They have different personalities,” Streisand said of the pups. “I’m waiting for them to get older so I can see if they have her brown eyes and her seriousness.” Streisand said that when the cloned dogs arrived, she dressed them in red and lavender to tell them apart, which is how they got their names - Miss Scarlett and Miss Violet.

Couples tote AR-15 assault rifles to wed
undreds of couples toting AR-15 rifles packed a Unification church in the US state of Pennsylvania to have their marriages blessed and their weapons celebrated as “rods of iron” that could have saved lives in a recent Florida school shooting. Women dressed in white and men in dark suits gripped the guns, which they had been urged to bring unloaded to the church on Wednesday in the rural Pocono Mountains, about 160km north of Philadelphia.
Many celebrants wore crowns, some made of bullets, while church officials dressed in flowing bright pink and white garments to go with their armaments. A spokesman for the church, now headed by the Reverend Hyung Jin Moon after the death of his father and church founder, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, said the marriage blessing ceremony had been planned long before a man with an AR15 massacred 17 students and school staff in Parkland, Florida, on February 14. Students from an elementary school near the church were relocated for the day to distance them from the gun-toting couples at the ceremony, according to the Wallenpaupack School District website. Moon said in a statement that the staff of
the Florida school should have been armed, an option President Donald Trump has said should be explored nationwide and which teacher unions have criticised. “Each of us is called to use the power of the ‘rod of iron’ not to arm or oppress as has been done in satanic kingdoms of this world, but to protect God’s children,” he said, citing the Book of Revelation in the Bible. “If the football coach who rushed into the building to defend students from the shooter with his own body had been allowed to carry a firearm, many lives, including his own, could have been saved,” Moon’s statement said on Wednesday. The Pennsylvania school district three years ago called off classes during the massive manhunt for survivalist Eric Frein, who police said used an AK-47 style weapon to ambush a Pennsylvania state trooper barracks and then fled into the mountains. Frein was found guilty in April of killing a Pennsylvania state trooper and wounding another in the September 2014 attack.
‘POO WATCH’ ENDS FOR UK DRUG SUSPECT
n unusual stand-off between British police and a man suspected of swallowing a drug stash has ended after he spent 47 days in custody refusing to go to the toilet. Lamarr Chambers, 24, was arrested in Harlow, Essex, on January 17 and officers tweeted updates of what they described as “poo watch” until the force decided to release him from custody on March 5 “following medical and legal advice”. Charges of intent to supply a class A drug and driving matters were discontinued but Chambers was rearrested by Essex police on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a class A drug and was released on bail before being taken to hospital. Police had applied for custody extensions at seven court hearings as they waited for Chambers, of Brixton, London, to go to the toilet. Officers said Chambers was seen daily by doctors, was constantly watched and routinely supplied with food and water.

Marking International Women’s Day, Kelly O’Dwyer used her first major speech in the portfolio to announce she would hold quarterly meetings with Facebook, Google, Twitter, Microsoft and Instagram. Also present at the meetings will be Communications Minister Mitch Fifield, Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins and eSafety Commissioner Julie
Inman-Grant. “I think it’s very important that they get a perspective from women and the impact that these online tools can have on women,” Ms O’Dwyer told the National Press Club. “Those regular meetings will mean that we hold their feet to the fire, we make sure that where they have policies (on bullying and abuse) that those policies don’t sit on a shelf, that they are properly instituted and they’re properly enforced.” The government was also not afraid of further strengthening laws if needed to protect vulnerable people online, as it is with revenge porn legislation now
before parliament. Ms O’Dwyer also announced a massive expansion of the sex discrimination commission’s fiveyearly survey on workplace sexual harassment to this year cover 10,000 participants, up from 2000 previously. The survey results will be released in April and the minister said the government would examine in particular how workplaces are taking account of sexual harassment in the social media age. “As the ‘me too’ movement continues to sweep the world, we need to think about the implications, both good and bad,
that come with airing allegations in a public forum,” she said. “Social media is not a courtroom and complainants and those who are the subject of complaints - can be subject to trial by keyboard warriors. “We need to be careful that this public push doesn’t silence the very women it wants to help.” Ms O’Dwyer also hinted the government may use the May budget to match Labor’s pledge to re-fund the Australian Bureau of Statistics to conduct regular “time use” surveys, which allow for the economic benefit of unpaid caring and work in the home to be calculated.
Solar systems smash record installations
he sun continues to shine on Australia’s solar industry with a record 3.5 million panels installed on our rooftops last year. The record 1057 megawatts of capacity in small-scale systems installed across the country smashed the previous record set in 2012, and the average system size has also doubled
since then, new Clean Energy Regulator figures released recently show. The regulator’s executive general manager Mark Williamson says there is increasing interest in renewables from households, community centres, schools and small businesses as a way to take control of electricity bills, but it is also good news for reducing carbon emissions.
VIC MPS TO EXAMINE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
ictorian MPs are on a mission to get people to embrace, not fear, artificial intelligence. The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Artificial Intelligence will consider how to capitalise on the technology, following in the footsteps of a world-first UK group established in 2017. “The issue of artificial intelligence and machine learning is one that people don’t understand and would naturally fear,” Trade and Investment
Minister Philip Dalidakis, the group’s co-convener, told reporters. “This is something that can provide us with huge opportunities within our industry development. “Yes, people will be fearful of it, but we should be learning to embrace that change.” The group, modelled on the UK version, will examine the economic and social effects of artificial intelligence.

Drones help BOEING SMART DRONES TO BE DEVELOPED IN QLD scientists track turtles
rones are being used to track turtles in a bid to boost conservation, scientists say. The flying machines can follow turtles across large areas and in hard-to-reach locations during the day and also at night. Dr Alan Rees, an ecologist at the University of Exeter, said the stunning footage gathered by the drones could also boost public interest and involvement in turtle conservation. “Drones are increasingly being used to gather data in greater detail and across wider areas than ever before,” Dr Rees said. “Satellite systems and aircraft transformed turtle conservation, but drones offer cheaper and often better ways to gather information. “We are learning more about their behaviour and movements at sea, and drones also give us new avenues for anti-poaching efforts.” However, his study - published in the journal Endangered Species Research - warns that drones cannot fully replace ground work and surveys. It said more research is needed to understand if and how turtles perceive drones during flight and whether this has an impact on them.
rones that can think for themselves will be developed in Queensland in a partnership between international aerospace company Boeing and the state government. Over the next three years Boeing will develop and test its “autonomous systems” - drones which can be given a task and perform it without input from a human operator. Boeing vice-president Chris Raymond said the technology had the potential to revolutionise a range of sectors, from military to farming and emergency response.
“At Boeing we believe autonomy is going to continue to enter our lives, both personally and professionally,” Mr Raymond told reporters in Brisbane. He said systems developed by Boeing had helped firefighters during the recent California wildfires, and have been used by the coast guard after hurricanes. Boeing chose Queensland in part because of its wide open spaces for testing the new technology. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the company has also been given a range of incentives to come to
the state - including payroll tax concessions - through the $65 million Advance Queensland Industry Attraction Fund. “We do not invest in development unless we can see a clear result coming down the track which means long-term skilled jobs for Queensland,” she said. “We know our state sees the effects of floods and cyclones, and these types of autonomous instruments ... can contribute to saving people’s lives.” The project will directly create 131 jobs over the next 3 years.
Tyre oil could power cars, researchers say
il made from tyres could one day power diesel cars, while also eliminating the harmful waste from the environment. Queensland University of Technology and Deakin University researchers have successfully tested a combination of tyre oil and diesel on the road for the first time in Brisbane. The combination fuel did not change the test van’s power and displayed similar levels of emissions as laboratory tests. The oil is extracted from discarded tyres by a process developed by NSW-based company Green Distillation Technologies (GDT). QUT Biofuel Engine Research Facility Director, Professor Richard Brown, and Deakin University’s Dr Tim Bodisco
carried out the tests. Professor Brown told AAP left-over tyres did not break down, creating an environmental waste problem. “Tyre stockpiles are not the sort of thing that you want to live next door to,” he said. “If set on fire they are impossible to extinguish.” Professor Brown said mining companies were interested in the new technology as a way to reduce the stockpile of large tyres from its vehicles. Professor Brown said he was shocked to learn a small company was transporting 50 tonnes’ of tyres from Brisbane each week. “I couldn’t believe it - every single week,” he said. The next step in the research will be to look at ways to improve the tyre oil by refining or upgrading it.
Aussie antenna tunes into first stars A
high-tech antenna in a whisper-quiet part of outback Western Australia has enabled scientists to make a groundbreaking discovery about when stars first lit up our universe. A team of American scientists used a small antenna to pick up radio wave signals from the time the first stars formed, a discovery hailed by astronomers as important as the detection of gravitational waves. In a research paper published on Thursday in the journal Nature, the scientists say the signals indicate the first stars formed 180 million years after the universe began with the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago. “It is unlikely that we’ll be able to see any earlier into the history of stars in our lifetimes,” said Dr Judd Bowman, the astronomer from Arizona State University who led the study. “This project shows that a promising new technique can work and has paved the way for decades of new astrophysical discoveries.” Dr Bowman and his team turned to the CSIRO’s isolated Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, 600km northeast of Perth, for help with their 12-year quest to discover when stars first glimmered. The observatory falls within the official Australian Radio Quiet Zone covering about 260km of WA, making it an ideal site for radio astronomers because
there’s much less chance of interference from man-made devices such as mobile phones interrupting their attempts to listen into signals coming from space. The antenna used by Dr Bowman was roughly the size of a refrigerator, but powerful enough to detect faint signals from hydrogen gas that surrounded the first stars. Scientists believe when stars first turned on they emitted ultraviolet light, which was absorbed by the hydrogen gas. The gas then cooled and cast a shadow on what’s known as the universe’s cosmic microwave background, an ancient light
released at the time of the Big Bang. That change in the hydrogen gas was detected in the form of a dip in the intensity of radio waves picked up at a low radio frequency by Dr Bowman’s antenna sitting in the dirt at Murchison. “We see this dip most strongly at about 78 megahertz, and that frequency corresponds to roughly 180 million years after the Big Bang,” said study co-author Alan Rogers, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The CSIRO’s Antony Schinckel, who oversaw the development of Murchison, said the discovery was the result of “the perfect combination of an extremely
well-calibrated instrument on the perfect site”. “This little tiny signal they saw was one of the holy grails of the low frequency radio astronomy world for several decades ... and they were able to find it with this little antenna,” he said. CSIRO astronomer Keith Bannister said the discovery will help scientists better understand how the universe evolved. “We want to know how those stars collected into galaxies and that sort of thing,” he said. “It’s much like trying to understand how someone starts as a baby and grows into an old person.”
FACEBOOK ENDS TEST OF SPLITTING NEWS FEED F
acebook has ended a test of splitting its signature News Feed into two, an idea that changed how people consumed news in the six countries where it occurred and added to concern about Facebook’s power. The test created two streaming series of posts with one focused on photos and updates from friends and family, with the second labelled an “explore feed”, which was dedicated to material from Facebook pages that the user had liked, such as media outlets or sports teams. Facebook decided to end the test and maintain one feed because people told the company
in surveys they did not like the change, Adam Mosseri, head of the News Feed at Facebook, said in a statement. “People told us they were less satisfied with the posts they were seeing, and having two separate feeds didn’t actually help them connect more with friends and family,” Mosseri said. The test began in October and took place in Bolivia, Cambodia, Guatemala, Serbia, Slovakia and Sri Lanka. It quickly reduced website traffic for smaller media outlets, some of which had built their audiences on Facebook clicks. The test revealed a contradiction in Facebook’s
relationship with publishers, whom the social network has also courted as a source of free content, said Leonardo Rodriguez, director of digital development at Guatemala’s Prensa Libre group. “This seemed to me like an abusive practice and shows their control,” Rodriguez said. Mosseri said the company had also “received feedback that we made it harder for people in the test countries to access important information, and that we didn’t communicate the test clearly.” “I hope Facebook will have more interest in what is happening inside its test
countries,” Slovakian journalist Filip Struharik, who had earlier criticised the test, said on Twitter on Thursday. Struharik said news media websites are stronger now by not relying on Facebook for traffic, and he expects traffic from Facebook to fall further in the long term because of other changes to the News Feed that de-emphasise media overall. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled other changes to the Facebook News Feed in the past two months to fight sensationalism and prioritise posts from friends and family.

harlie Goldsmith has an unusual gift, he can heal people and take away their pain without even touching them. In a new TV show, Goldsmith demonstrates his abilities in order to try to show the sceptics that his abilities are legitimate. “I’m not afraid of the scrutiny. My whole thing is that this can be scrutinised,” Goldsmith said. Goldsmith, from Melbourne, said he discovered his ability to heal in 1999 when he was 18. While he was on a retreat, he felt a magnetic force between his two hands. He started, without realising, to heal a woman’s hand and, after she moved a finger she hadn’t been able to move in years, he realised he could help people. “I think there’s probably lots of people in the world that have the same ability that don’t even know it,” he said. “I think it’s a human ability that’s been misunderstood and probably misrepresented a lot and hasn’t really had a chance. It’s definitely an energy of some sort that is involved, I can’t say how it works. “ In the TV show, Goldsmith travels around the US treating people with different conditions with his gift, he doesn’t charge any money for his healing. “It works really well on
subject of new TV show autoimmune conditions, allergies, it’s good on a lot of different viruses, infections, arthritis. Typically, if someone has had a long-running problem that’s unresolved by other interventions, it’s like my sweet spot,” he said. “Typically about 80 per cent of the time it will help with people in those cases. I’m good with inflammatory stuff, like when the immune system is attacking the body, that area is a very strong are for me.” On the show, Goldsmith has a lot of success and he knows that after it airs he could be inundated with requests for treatment. “The impact of knowing that I can do this, and there are other people in the world who can do this, and knowing there is no place in the world for people like us, is more annoying for me than the ramifications of the show,” he said. “If you have a talent or a gift normally you get to use your gift, like in music or sports, but there isn’t even an option for people like me. There isn’t a real career path, there isn’t real support, so there were lots of reasons for me to do what I’ve done which outweigh the ramifications. * The Healer will air on TLC on Monday March 5 at 9.30pm (AEDT).

THE SOPRANOS MOVIE PREQUEL IN THE WORKS
he Sopranos is getting the big-screen treatment. New Line is developing a movie prequel, currently titled The Many Saints of Newark, penned by David Chase. Chase, who created the hit HBO series, wrote the screenplay with Lawrence Konner. Some of the fan-favourite characters from The Sopranos are expected to appear in the film set in the era of the 1960s Newark riots, when African-
Americans and Italians were adversaries. Considered one of the greatest television series of all time, the groundbreaking series ran for six seasons on HBO from 1999 until 2007. Its numerous accolades include 21 Primetime Emmy Awards and five Golden Globe Awards. Chase will serve as producer as well as co-writer on the film. Nicole Lambert will serve as executive producer.

JAY Z DETHRONES DIDDY AS HIP HOP’S RICHEST
ay Z has climbed past Sean “Diddy” Combs to rank as the world’s wealthiest hip-hop artist thanks to heady champagne and cognac investments, according to data released by Forbes magazine. The 48-year-old Hard Knock Life rapper and music mogul increased his estimated net worth in 2017 to $US900 million, up by $US90 million from the year before in the annual list compiled by Forbes. Combs, 48, who had been
hip-hop’s wealthiest artist since Forbes first released the list in 2011, grew his estimated $US825 million fortune by a tepid $US5 million last year, Forbes said on Thursday. The primary driver of Jay Z’s wealth came from investments in luxury champagne brand Armand de Brignac and D’Usse cognac, while lukewarm trends in the vodka and cable television sectors weighed on Combs’ investments in Diageo’s Ciroc vodka and the TV network Revolt, Forbes said.

Australian food going back to the future
ire up the DeLorean, it’s time to go to the greengrocer, butcher, baker and fishmonger on a virtual back-to-the-future shopping trip. That’s the vision for the nation’s food consumption as outlined at the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resources Economics’ Outlook conference in Canberra on Tuesday. KPMG’s global head of agribusiness Ian Proudfoot believes people will increasingly revert to individual food suppliers which they’ll access through apps in the next 10 to 15 years. “We’ll go back to the future where people will buy from a greengrocer, a baker, fishmonger and butcher - all the different suppliers - but they won’t physically go around to those shops,” Mr
Proudfoot told the ABARES conference. There’ll also be scope for
people to look at where their food is produced up close, but not necessarily personally. “We can put any consumer anywhere in the world in the centre of any farm using virtual reality,” Mr Proudfoot said. While farmers are facing growing challenges from technologies which can manufacture food in petri dishes rather than paddocks, unprecedented opportunities to engage with customers are emerging.
Ankeny said. Blockchain, the technology behind cryptocurrency, is also emerging as a tool for farmers, commodity buyers and consumers. AgriDigital is a ledger using Blockchain which creates a tamper-proof record of transactions. “The fact we can use Blockchain to do realtime exchange of currency as well as assets is quite transformative,” AgriDigital co-founder and chief executive Emma Weston said.
Mr Proudfoot said machines which create beef from cell technology could one day sit alongside coffee makers on benchtops, as food trends compete into the future, With a range of ethical, social and health concerns driving consumer choices, building trust between farmers and customers is becoming increasingly important. “We need to go back to transparency and trust,” University of Adelaide associate professor Rachel

food | drink Protein intake lowers Alzheimer’s risk
ating enough foods high in protein such as chicken, tuna, lentils and peanuts may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, Australian research suggests. Researchers at Edith Cowan University’s school of medical and health sciences examined the diets of 541 Australians and measured the levels of amyloid beta (Ab) in their brain, pieces of protein which clump together in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s disease. The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, found participants with higher levels of protein in their diet were less likely to have high levels of Ab in their brain. Those with the highest consumption, about 118g a day, were 12 times less likely to have high levels of Ab than those in the lowest consumption group, who ate only 54g of protein a day.
“The research clearly demonstrates that the more protein eaten the lower the chances someone has of having a high Ab burden on the brain, which corresponds to a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s in the future,” lead researcher Dr Binosha Fernando said. The mechanism driving the association between high protein intake and low Ab is not known. Dr Fernando said one theory was adequate protein intake reduced blood pressure, a risk factor for Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease. “We also know that developing cardiovascular disease increases your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease,” she said. Protein is found in animal products such as beef, pork, lamb, eggs, fish and poultry, as well as plant-based foods such as legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Without a medical
breakthrough, the number of Australians to be diagnosed with dementia including Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, is expected to increase to 536,164 by 2025 and almost 1.1 million by 2056, according to Dementia Australia. To get the potential protective effect demonstrated in the Australia study would not be “too hard”, Dr Fernando said. It would require people eat about 120g of protein each day, she said. “For example, if you had a mixed bean and tuna salad
for lunch, 100g of chicken and salad for dinner and snacked on a handful of peanuts during the day, you would be getting very close to enough protein to lower your chances of having a high Ab burden in your brain,” Dr Fernando said. PROTEIN IN COMMON FOODS PER 100G: • Chicken 30g • Beef (steak) 26g • Tuna (bluefin) 30g • Lentils 10g • Pinto beans 20g • Peanuts 26g • Milk 3.4g • Cheese (cheddar) 25g

5 tips from a tea expert to brew the perfect cup
or most of us, a little evening downtime is not a luxury - it’s a necessity. After a hectic day of work, commutes, kids and dinner prep, we deserve to take a moment to slow down and enjoy some hard-earned “me time.” Instead of using this time to stream your favorite show or scroll through social media, try a gentle and relaxing activity that puts your focus on the present moment and makes this time truly enjoyable. “For a relaxing end-of-day activity, there’s nothing quite like preparing and savoring
the perfect cup of herbal tea,” says Stephen Twining, whose family founded the worldfamous tea brand, Twinings of London, in 1706. The steps we take to prepare and enjoy our perfect cup of tea can help us unwind and feel refreshed, Twining says. Tea releases pleasing scents, the warm brew makes comforting sensations as we wrap our fingers around the mug and take sips, and there’s the deep and satisfying flavors of the tea itself. Of course, when we’re engaged in a mindful activity, it’s that much easier to let go

of daily stress and transition into a more relaxed state. Follow these five tips from Twining to brew your favorite cup of herbal tea, and try making this a part of your end-of-day ritual. 1. Start fresh: The perfect cup of tea starts with a clean mug and a clean kettle of fresh, cold water. Never reuse water that’s already been boiled, because that can weaken the tea’s flavor, Twining says. 2. Don’t over-boil: As soon as the water reaches a boil, it’s time to remove the kettle from the heat source. “I never let the water overboil because in doing so, you will cause the oxygen in the water to be reduced, making the tea taste ‘flat,’” Twining says. For that reason, he recommends not using a microwave to boil the water. 3. Savor the moment: Set the tea bag in the mug before you add hot water, pouring it directly onto the tea bag. Just then, it starts releasing its herbal scent, so make sure you take a moment to inhale and relax while enjoying the aroma. Twinings offers a range of herbal teas each expertly blended to provide the perfect balance of taste, flavor and aroma. For example, Buttermint has a refreshing blend of peppermint leaves combined with the creamy flavor of
vanilla for a smooth taste and rich aroma, perfect for helping you unwind. 4. Wait for the perfect flavor: Many people make the mistake of thinking that once the brew darkens, it’s ready to drink. However, Twining says color merely washes off the tea leaves early in the process, so don’t let the appearance mislead you. To make sure the flavors fully develop, know how much time your tea needs to brew, and keep an eye on the clock. Herbal teas should steep for a full four minutes. 5. Customize and enjoy: Hopefully, you will find your perfectly brewed cup of herbal tea needs no embellishment because the expertly blended herbs and flowers will provide all the flavor you need. But as Twining says, “The best cup of tea is the one you like the most,” so feel free to make adjustments. The recommended add-ins for herbal teas are honey, sugar or a squeeze of lemon - do not add milk or cream. For a deeper flavor, let the tea steep a minute or two longer. After a long day, you definitely earned this moment, so make sure you take time to enjoy it. If you’re interested in exploring Twinings’ complete line of herbal teas, visit twiningsusa. com.

Pam Anderson wants Whisky flows at UK inmates to go vegan distillery 500 years on
ormer Baywatch star Pamela Anderson wants NSW female prisoners to go vegan to improve their lives behind bars.
In a letter to the state’s Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin this week, Ms Anderson argued that switching all NSW female prisons to a vegan menu would help inmates “embrace nonviolence”. Ms Anderson, an honorary director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, says it would save the government money and improve the health of inmates. A NSW Corrective Services spokesman said on Thursday inmates are able to request a vegan diet “but so far it hasn’t proven popular”.

Lindores Abbey Distillery in Fife has been described as the ‘’spiritual home’’ of whisky and exchequer records from 1494 show Friar John Cor of the abbey paid duty on eight ‘bolls’ of malt to make ‘aqua vitae’, or alcohol, for King James IV. The old Scottish measure amounts to 350 litres. A new STG7 million ($A14 million) visitor centre and distillery opened last year at the end of a 20-year regeneration project by abbey custodians Drew and Helen McKenzie Smith. Lindores is aiming to produce 150,000 litres of spirit a year, using 100 per cent Fife barley and overseen by distillery manager
Gary Haggart and whisky consultant Andy Cant. Haggart said: “Distilling the first spirit at Lindores Abbey in more than 500 years is such an honour, and with this innovative and world-class distillery behind me, it’s now the task of the team here to produce a Scotch whisky worthy of its spiritual home. “We’re looking forward to that challenge, using all of the expertise and passion Drew and Helen McKenzie Smith have garnered from across the industry, and it will be our pleasure to welcome whisky pilgrims through our doors to share in the spirit of this unique place.” The abbey ruins - where William Wallace rested after the Battle of Black Earnside in 1298 and the burial site of the first Duke of Rothesay are also open to the public as part of the new Lindores visitor centre experience.

JON STEVENS BEST OF TOUR
Jon’s musical journey started off with success in his birthplace New Zealand, where he released his number one debut album. Once on Australian shores he
wasted no time forming Noiseworks. Over the next five years the band produced three Top 10 singles and four Top 10 albums. Following the success of Noiseworks, Stevens decided to pursue opportunities on a different kind of stage starring as Judas in the 1992 highly acclaimed Australian Musical Production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar. 2013 again saw Stevens treading the boards in the musical production, this time in the role of Pontius Pilot, which was met with critical acclaim. In 2000, a studio collaboration saw Stevens become part of rock band INXS as guest vocalist and he embarked on a global tour with them. Shortly after, he
was officially announced as the “seventh member” of INXS. Returning to his solo career, Stevens then forged ahead with new material in the studio, unleashing a further two solo albums - “Changing Times” and then “Testify” in 2011. 2012 saw he and guitarist David Lowy form The Dead Daisies, touring across the USA and New Zealand during 2013 and 14. Stevens returned to his solo career in 2015, recording, producing and mixing his latest studio offering, “Woman” released in September. In 2016 he joined forces with legendary musician, songwriter and producer Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics) to record a new album, Starlight. With his mojo fully intact, Stevens stands virtually alone in the music scene, with a raw vocal power that won him attention first as a teenager and now as a veteran singer and songwriter. Time has toughened his delivery while tapping into his emotional wellsprings more than ever before. Catch Jon Stevens ‘Best Of Tour’ at Chelsea Heights Hotel on Saturday March 17 from 8pm. Tickets are on sale now from the venue or Oztix.
BACKYARD BREW – MUSIC TO YOUR BEERS
aking a nod from The Who’s trusted, maxim of Maximum RnB, Backyard Brew roll out more live music on the menu with both barrels at Mornington’s Royal Hotel every other Sunday in March. It all starts out fairly mellow, a ruse perhaps to rope in the most reluctant of toe tappers. Covers from Van Morrison, Marvin Gaye, Clapton and the Stones, rub up against more contemporary upstarts Amy Winehouse and Donavon Frankenrieter. There’s common ground here and “The Brew” do what a good brew should: Blend and ferment, distilling and concentrating the flavours. Halfway in, and any prior dissent or resting greasies from the hard line have evaporated into fancy footwork and wide smiles, as the band implore you to “take’ em to the river”. More Soul drenched Rock n Roll mayhem follows as Stevie Winwood, Wonder and Ray Vaughn are slapped about a bit and chucked in the ring
with Pickett and Palmer. Honky Tonk Women strut the perimeter, ring girl scorecard’s aloft. What’s next, who’s next?... You really got me!... By nights end The Who are fighting it out with Proud Mary, no winners or losers, just a glorious Resurrection Shuffle of artists connected by a golden thread. It’s got blues that rhumba, Rock that Rolls. It’s bittersweet, incendiary, ‘kiss me quick’ and wink for me. Ingredients drawn from the well of life, laid down with integrity and humour. These fellas have been everywhere man and there ain’t no stoppin’ now. Jim Love Vocals and Rhythm Guitar. Middlesbrough born, Love thumbed a ride to London back in 85 to co found seminal underground Alt Rock rag “House of Dolls”. Playing all the famous clubs, and festivals including Reading, Glasters, Roskilde to name a few, Love found himself touring the world as Bass man for Tricky before jumping ship in Melbourne on the Big Day
out tour 96. Sliding in to the Oz DJ invasion Love formed “Rocktronica” nut jobs Pound System and went on to remix the cream of Oz music from Renee Geyer to Kylie and toured the concept around the country. Ray Luckhurst, Lewisham South London, Bass Player sound engineer to the London hi ups and hordes, Stiff Records Tours. Tin Pan Alley trader. He’s worked with ‘em all and can spin a yarn or two. Wayne Copelin, Melbourne, Lead Guitar. Man of Mystery. There’s tales from the top end and QLD of endless roadhouses barrooms and musters. He knows all the chords and all the licks, a true master of his craft.
Frank Papalia, Melbourne, Drums. A man possessed of fine vintage kits and funky gooves. The beating heart and soul of Backyard Brew, the connection between Frank and Ray as a rhythm section is truly top shelf and a joy to experience. This motley mix of raw, raspy vocals, power driven riffs and Godspeed groove geezers blend perfectly to create the ultimate Backyard Brew. Jimmy Love and the Brew boys have toes tapping and tongues wagging, come see why! Backyard Brew performs Sundays March 18 and April 1 at Mornington’s Royal Hotel from 3pm. For more information find Backyard Brew on Facebook.

Somebody help, this is an intergalactic emergency! My ship crash-landed by mistake, and there seemed to be no signs of intelligent life anywhere. Luckily I was brought to Warrnambool where I was lovingly cared for. My helmet has been polished and my space suit given a thorough dry-cleaning. I could be happy living with another dog, but I’m not a fan of those fluffy felines (a space mission is no place for a cat!) I also love kids and would like to go to a family home with lots of playmates! So come on, our adventure is waiting to start. RSPCA NO. 887598

a historic and record-breaking find. But the fact there’s a remarkable connection between the name of Mr Illman’s company and the find - not to mention his well-known penchant for securing free promotion through “ambush marketing” - has sceptics asking if this is just another publicity stunt. He admits the coincidence is both remarkable and fortuitous. “It couldn’t have fallen into better hands,” he told AAP. Mr Illman scoffed at the suggestion he could have mocked up a fake so convincing it fooled the experts, but accepts most people would expect such old objects to be in worse condition. “If I’ve shonky-ed this up, I’m even better than I think I am,” he said. “To get access to the name of the boat, where it was on a certain day - because it’s not Perth businessman is and written by the captain of the online anywhere - you’d have to German sailing barque “Paula”, go into the annals in Germany, rejecting suggestions his discovery of a 132-year-old within an almost pristine, get the information, find a bottle unsealed Dutch gin bottle that message in a bottle on a West of that vintage and put it up Australian beach is an elaborate was partly buried in sand about there, wrap a note so that the hoax. 50 metres inland near Wedge indent of the rope is visible. If I’ve wife Tonya found a remarkably well-preserved note, dated 1886 which concluded they had made done it, I am a genius.”
SCEPTICS QUESTION WA MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
Museum assistant curator of maritime archaeology Ross Anderson said he was surprised the bottle and message were in such good condition. But there were other rare examples of objects kept intact by a perfect micro-environment. He said it must have come ashore within six to 12 months of being jettisoned and spent the years buried in sand, with the tight rolling of the paper aiding its preservation. “We’ve done as much as we can to corroborate the find,” Dr Anderson told AAP. The museum says it is one of thousands of bottles that were thrown overboard during a 69-year-long research project by the German Naval Observatory, which sought information about global ocean currents by asking finders to report where and when a bottle had been recovered. Offshoots of the observatory verified the authenticity of the message found by the Illmans, which matched other records written by Paula’s captain that were stored in German archives. It is now believed to be the world’s oldest message in a bottle ever discovered and is being assessed for a Guinness World Record.

Jaguar I-PACE: The Art of Electric Performance
he new all-electric Jaguar I-PACE makes electric vehicle (EV) ownership more exciting, accessible and practical than ever thanks to its unique design and advances in both battery technology and public charging networks. They combine to make the world’s most desirable EV easy to live with, efficient and engaging to drive. With a state-of-the-art 90kWh Lithium-ion battery comprising 432 pouch cells, chosen for their high energy density and superior thermal management, the I-PACE delivers a range of 480km (WLTP cycle). Owners will be able to achieve a 0-80 per cent battery charge from empty in 40 minutes using DC rapid charging (100kW),
or top up an additional 100km in as little as 15 minutes. Alternatively, home charging with an AC wall box (7kW) will take the I-PACE from empty to 80 per cent in just over ten hours, making it ideal for overnight charging. A suite of smart rangeoptimising features and smartphone apps will give
I-PACE drivers complete peace of mind, whether monitoring vehicle charging from home or confirming available range midjourney. For example, owners can automatically pre-condition the battery temperature to maximise range, and heat or cool the cabin before starting a journey. Using mains power to warm or cool the car when it’s
plugged in means the range is unaffected. I-PACE is now available to order in Australia from $119,000 + ORC (I-PACE S). In addition to S, SE and HSE derivatives, there will also be a limited number of First Edition I-PACE models available. Configure yours at www.jaguar.com.au

FORGET REVIVAL, HODGE WILL CREATE LEGACY << cont. from back page...
young Brisbane squad as he did at his beloved Hawks. “I want him to leave a legacy,” Fagan told AAP. “He is here for a couple of years. He wants to make as big an impact on those guys as he can so when he does leave what he has grown doesn’t disappear it lives on.” Hodge will look to rally a young defensive line boasting deputy vice-captain Harris Andrews and 2017 Rising Star nomination Alex Witherden. The Lions defence conceded 2526 points last season - more than 200 points more than the next-worst offender. While Andrews has been
identified as a 10-year leader of the Lions back six, Witherden is also set to blossom after playing nine games at just 18 last year, averaging 23 touches. There will be just as much pressure in 2018 on their midfield, namely captain Dayne Beams and his deputy Dayne Zorko after ex-skipper Tom Rockliff’s off-season defection to Port. Big things are also expected from No.1 draft pick, midfielder Cameron Rayner. Since their round 11 bye Brisbane were rated first in the AFL, scoring at 51.7 per cent and kicking a goal at 28.7 per cent once they got the ball inside 50m according to Champion Data. They just didn’t get the ball in
there enough, Fagan says. “It’s clear to us after our review that we were good at scoring when we gave ourselves an opportunity - we just didn’t do that enough,” he said. “Statistically we were also very poor at contested ball. “But with ball in hand we can play some exciting football. We just need to give ourselves a chance to score and get the pressure off our defence.” Brisbane have high hopes that ex-Crow Charlie Cameron can form a formidable combination up front with Eric Hipwood after his off-season trade. “Charlie is an energetic, enthusiastic bloke - he has fit in so well with the group,” Fagan said.
“He has unbelievable speed and played in a grand final (2017) so he will add his voice on the field. “He has surprised me. For 23 he has a fair capacity for leadership.” Brisbane will hope to avoid a bottom-two finish for the first time in four seasons after notching just five wins last year. Not that Fagan will rate their 2018 improvement on victories. “We haven’t set the bar on how many wins. We have got other things to measure it by,” he said. “Last year there was an improvement in all sorts of stats plus game understanding, structures, attitude in games. “Although we finished on the bottom I thought we were heading in the right direction.”
Cameron Smith backs NRL team for Perth M elbourne great Cameron Smith believes there’s enough “thirst” for Perth to have an NRL franchise of their own, but says it would only thrive if the team enjoys success from the outset. Perth are among the contenders to land an NRL side if the league decides to expand at the end of the current broadcast deal in 2022. Smith, who debuted for the Storm in 2002, knows first-hand how hard it can be for an NRL franchise to win over fans in an AFL heartland. The Storm’s remarkable on-field success helped them overcome that hurdle. Melbourne entered the newlyformed NRL in 1998, and won a premiership a year later. They also won the title in 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2017. They were later stripped of their 2007 and 2009 titles because of serious salary cap breaches. Despite that controversy,
Melbourne’s ability to maintain a remarkable level of sustained success have helped them build a foothold in the AFL-dominated Melbourne market. Perth is also dominated by AFL - a battle rugby union side Western Force were never able to overcome due to their lack of success. The Force boasted huge crowds in their first few years. But season after season of poor results soon saw those crowds dwindle, until they were axed last year
because of financial reasons. Smith is in Perth this week preparing for Saturday’s clash with the Bulldogs at the new $1.5 billion stadium. The 34-year-old thinks there’s enough depth in NRL ranks to expand with a team based in Perth. But he said the new team would need to be set up to succeed from the outset, rather than go through a slow build. “Thinking back to when I first started in 2002, there wasn’t a whole lot of knowledge around rugby league in Melbourne and Victoria,”
Smith said. “Not many people knew about the Melbourne Storm or who played for them. “But going on the success we’ve had, all of the players who play for our club, they get noticed when they walk down the street. “If they go to a cafe or a shopping centre, people say G’day to them. “At the end of the day, the popularity or a following of any team or any code is built on success, and how much you have of it. “So it would be important that if a team was to start up over here, they’d need to have a bit of success early.” Smith felt the time was right to expand the game outside of its traditional heartlands. “I think the thirst for it is healthy,” he said. Perth haven’t had a professional rugby league side since the demise of the Perth Reds at the end of 1997 in the wake of the Super League war.

ALVAREZ TESTS POSITIVE FOR BANNED DRUG
iddleweight boxer Canelo Alvarez has tested positive for a banned drug, and his promoters blame contaminated meat. Alvarez tested positive for trace levels of the performanceenhancing drug Clenbuterol, according to his promoters Golden Boy Promotions. But after attending a voluntary drugs test before his rematch with multiple world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, the results were attributed to meat contamination. “As part of the voluntary testing program that Canelo Alvarez insisted on ahead of his May 5 fight, one of his results came back positive for trace levels of Clenbuterol, consistent with meat contamination that has impacted dozens of athletes in Mexico over the last years,” read a statement from Golden Boy Promotions. “As Daniel Eichner, director of SMRTL, the WADA-accredited lab that conducted the tests stated in his letter (on Monday): ‘These values are all within the range of what is expected from meat contamination’. “Upon receiving this information, Golden Boy immediately notified the Nevada State Athletic Commission and Gennady Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler.” Golden Boy promotions said Alvarez will immediately move his training camp from Mexico to the US and will submit to any number and variety of additional tests. The promoters added Alvarez has tested clean dozens of times over the course of his previous 12 fights. Alvarez said: “I am an athlete who respects the sport and this surprises me and bothers me because it had never happened to me. “I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail.”
Rushton doubts Pacquiao
is up for rematch J
eff Horn’s trainer Glenn Rushton doubts a rematch with Manny Pacquiao will eventuate. Horn won his WBO welterweight title with a controversial unanimous decision victory over Pacquiao last July at Suncorp Stadium. The Filipino great had indicated his willingness to fight Horn again almost immediately afterwards but, eight months later, it looks less likely than ever. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum had planned for the winner of Horn’s mandatory title defence against Terence Crawford on April 14 in Las Vegas to square off against Pacquiao, who was slated to fight Mike Alvarado on the same card. Arum’s hope was that Crawford would win and then face Pacquiao in a marquee fight designed to ‘pass the torch’ to the unbeaten American. But Pacquiao, 39, rejected the
offer, which his media relations officer called an “insult” to the former eight-division world champion. It’s unclear what his next move will be - but Rushton anticipates it will have nothing to do with Horn. “We’re up for it but, honestly, we don’t think Manny Pacquiao’s up for it,” he told AAP. “They had their opportunity; they could have come straight
up the Horn rematch. Horn has moved on, Rushton says, and is deep in preparations for the Crawford bout - his first outside Australia and New Zealand. Rushton called it the “biggest fight of the year”, even though it was struggling to gain traction in the US because of Crawford’s modest fanbase and relatively low profile. “People think he’s a certain winner. We’re saying, ‘no, you don’t get this’,” he said. “People just haven’t really acknowledged Jeff. back and done the rematch. I know it eats a little bit at him. “If you really thought you “This is going to be another could do it, you would have done huge war - a really, really tough, it then. hard, close fight. “We’ve got the best pound-for“Realistically, as much as we’d pound in the world against a welcome the fight, the chances of Manny Pacquiao fighting Jeff guy who’s done just incredible Horn again I think are slim to things. none.” “How many guys have fought Pacquiao cited a schedule as many world-ranked fighters clash with his political duties as as Jeff in their first 19 fights? the reason why he couldn’t take You’ll be struggling to find one.”

Ph: 1300 BIG NEWS
Bulldogs over AFL premiership hangover I s the hangover over? Everyone associated with the Western Bulldogs sincerely hopes so after the 2016 premiers struggled through a difficult 2017 campaign. Try as they might, Luke Beveridge’s men were largely unable to recapture the spark and spirit that propelled them to the club’s first flag in 62 years, finishing the season 10th with 11 wins and 11 losses. “It was all connected, really,” assistant coach Daniel Giansiracusa said of the reasons behind their fall from the top of the AFL tree. “We weren’t as good around the ball as we had been ... we probably only came off a couple of per cent, but that was enough for opposition teams to get hold of us. “But we’ve continued to evolve in that space. “And we’ve really been working hard on our efficiency when we have the ball ... that kick inside 50 is the hardest kick in the game. “With plenty of work in those areas we think we can hit the ground running.” Beveridge’s line-up, the forward line in particular, will have a decidedly different look in 2018 after an off-season makeover. Club stalwarts Bob Murphy and Matthew Boyd retired, while Stewart Crameri, Travis Cloke and Jake Stringer were all shown the door. With veteran defender Dale Morris sidelined for up to three months with a partial ACL tear, the Bulldogs are left with a relatively youthful squad. “We did have a bit of experience go out of the side, but we think we’ve been able to develop guys over the last couple of years, especially in those positions,” Giansiracusa said. “All in all, we’re looking for guys to take that next small step.” The Dogs addressed some needs with experienced campaigners Jackson Trengove from Port Adelaide and Fremantle’s Hayden Crozier. Trengove is able to play at both ends of the ground as well as help out in the ruck but he will play predominantly in a key defensive role.
TIGERS’ LYNCH ADMISSION Crozier will line up alongside him in the back half, the former Dockers forward recast as a running half-back flanker by Beveridge. What lies ahead for another off-season arrival, Brisbane’s Josh Schache, is less clear. The former No.2 draft pick hasn’t lived up to that billing so far, but the key forward is only 20 and will be given every opportunity to form a potent partnership with fellow tall Tom Boyd in attack. After a tough year when he took time away from the game to deal with mental health issues, Boyd’s ability to find his best form will be a big factor in how his team fares. “Tom’s going well, he’s in a good headspace, he’s got himself really fit and he’s another player who is so important for us,” Giansiracusa said. “For different reasons he didn’t have the season that he wanted last year and we’ve supported him with that. “We can’t fault his application and attitude this pre-season. He seems really happy in himself and he’s really thrown himself into his training.”
IRRELEVANT TO SUNS G old Coast AFL coach Stuart Dew says former premiership teammate Damien Hardwick’s admission that Richmond would “make room” for his off-contract star Tom Lynch is irrelevant. The Richmond coach caused a stir when he indicated the premiers were interested in the Suns’ co-captain, with the Melbourne powerhouse later contacting Gold Coast to apologise for the comments. But Dew, who is yet to make his AFL coaching debut, isn’t
fussed about the constant speculation, calling it white noise that “comes and goes in one day”. Hardwick endured the same contract saga with star Tiger Dustin Martin last year and empathised with Dew, saying he thought the year-long speculation grew “tiresome”. But in the same Fox Footy interview he said a player of Lynch’s stature coming off contract made him someone “you probably make room for”.
INJURIES EASE FOR PIES AHEAD OF AFL SEASON
ollingwood will need to overcome a troubled pre-season if they are to play finals for the first time since 2013. Six of Nathan Buckley’s best 22 had their preparations for the 2018 premiership campaign interrupted by injuries. Jeremy Howe (calf), Darcy Moore (Achilles), Jamie Elliott (ankle), Daniel Wells (Achilles), Levi Greenwood (knee) and Alex Fasolo (shoulder) have all been hampered to varying degrees.
Irrelevant on the field but still not ideal, Elliott was arrested after he relieved himself in a street-side bin in November and Jordan De Goey was exiled in February after he had his driver’s licence suspended for drink driving. Then Greater Western Sydney dealt them a 60-point thrashing in their first pre-season outing in Canberra. But there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

Forget revival, Hodge will create legacy
f all goes to plan, Luke Hodge will create something much more important than a revival at rebuilding AFL club Brisbane Lions. He will create a legacy. The once mighty Lions haven’t played finals since 2009. And an inexperienced Brisbane don’t look like racking up enough wins to end that drought after
collecting the 2017 wooden spoon in coach Chris Fagan’s first year at the helm. While they would be nice, victories are far from the first thing on ex-Hawks football manager Fagan’s mind ahead of 2018 after luring Hodge out of retirement and reuniting at the Lions in the off-season. Hodge won four premierships - three as captain - in his stellar 305-game
career at Hawthorn. Hodge 34 in June - won’t spend anywhere near as much time at the Lions. And it remains to be seen exactly how many games he will actually play. But Fagan is convinced the veteran defender will make just as much impact on his
