viðey It is the largest island in Kollafjörður fjord and covers about 1,5 km2. In the year 1226 a monastery was consecrated there and it later became the richest monastery in Iceland. Among other historical events, Sheriff Skúli Magnússon built and moved into Viðeyjarstofa in 1755. This house still stands and is today the oldest house in Reykjavík built from Icelandic rock. The church was built shortly after and consecrated in 1774. Viðeyjarstofa is now a restaurant, a ferry sails from Sundahöfn to Viðey.

The Raven’s Nest Recycled house “I’m like a raven, I collect things,” Icelandic film director Hrafn Gunnlaugsson says of his seaside hidden abode. As an observer, the house at Laugarnestangi 65 can easily be mistaken for an eclectic museum, an offshore eatery or an enormous unfinished sculpture. Like so many artists, Gunnlaugsson has a vision for his anomalous haven – a living, breathing display of history, his travels, family, nature and above all, recyclable materials. It’s simply not enough to observe; only active participants are allowed in this bizarre existence that Gunnlaugsson calls home.

Öskjuhlíð One of many recreational areas in Reykjavík. In the year 1950 trees were planted for what now is the wide spread forest with walking trails throughout the area. Öskjuhlíð is a link in a system of hiking trails from the old centre across the Vatnsmýri, Fossvogs- and Elliðaárdalur valley and Elliðarárvatn Lake into Heiðmörk. Perlan was built in 1991 on water tanks that originate from 1940 and where replaced by new ones in 1986-87. Perlan has a view point, a saga museum and a restaurant.

Hostel and Campsite Rauðhólar What is left of a cluster of pseudo-craters (age about 4600 years) in Elliðaárhraun. Originally there were over 80 craters but the gravel from them was taken and used in constructions. Most of the material was taken around World War II for constructions such as Reykjavík airport and road building.
