Fleet Life meets...
Tristram Cary, chairman of Winchfield Festival – a music event held every other year in St Mary’s Church and in the Festival Marquee beside it. 16 – 23 June 2018. Visit: www.winchfieldfestival.org How did Winchfield Festival first come about? The first Winchfield Festival was held in 1990 to raise funds to overhaul the church organ in St Mary’s - Winchfield’s beautiful Grade 1 listed Norman Church. Over the years the Festival has grown in quality and reputation - it is now recognised as one of the best music festivals in the South East of England. Its special attraction is that it offers audiences the chance to listen to world class chamber music played in an informal and intimate setting which happens to have very good acoustics. How did you get involved with the Festival? By chance my next door neighbour, Ian Gavin-Brown, was the Chairman of the Festival and he press-ganged me onto the Festival Committee in 2000 - within just a month of us moving to Winchfield. Sadly, Ian was taken ill in 2016 and died in January this year, so I have now taken his place. Ian’s widow, Bridget, is delighted that the Festival continues to build on the foundations that he laid. Tell me a bit more about the Festival… This year the Festival will be held from June 16 until June 23. The great pianist Joanna MacGregor (who played here in 2014) told us that it was much more satisfying to play at the Winchfield Festival, than, say, at the Festival Hall, because at Winchfield she is close to the audience and can communicate with them much more directly. The church is set in beautiful countryside and concert-goers can picnic in the field before the concert or enjoy a wide range of street food,
6 | Fleet Life May 2018
sandwiches and drinks available at the venue. The four concerts in the Marquee will showcase jazz, rock, motown and opera. Full programme details and online booking is available at www.winchfieldfestival. org. Each concert starts at 7.30, but the festival bar opens at 6pm. How long does it take to plan the festival and what goes into the organising of it? It takes two years, mainly because we need to book the musicians at least a year in advance (as their schedules are so full). The whole festival is run by a small committee and about 100 local volunteers who all pitch in and help with everything from running the bar to putting down anti-skid matting for the car park. It’s quite a commitment, but it builds a feeling of shared achievement in the village and we all find it rewarding. Any past festival mishaps? On the eve of the 2014 Festival we had a cloud burst which collapsed the festival marquee and flooded the field. We had to have the tent repaired, dig emergency drainage ditches and bring in a water-truck from Southampton to pump over 40 tons of water off the field. But the show went on as planned. Our festival-goers seemed just as happy to come along in wellies as the younger folk going to Glastonbury! What would you do to improve or change Fleet? Fleet is a great town with a lot going for it but it does seem to be falling behind neighbouring towns like Camberley and Farnborough in terms of the modernisation of its shopping centre and facilities. It’s good to see that the Hart Local
Plan recognises the need for the regeneration of the town centre. Is there anything you want to share with Fleet that perhaps we should know? Winchfield is a mere stone’s throw from Fleet. It’s one of the bestpreserved Domesday settlements in Hampshire and it is surrounded by beautiful countryside and the prettiest stretch of the Basingstoke canal. Your favourite place to eat / drink / go in Fleet? My favourite place in Fleet is Bakers, the hardware shop, because they can be relied on to supply (with great charm) any catch, bolt or fastener, however obscure. It’s like a magic shop out of Harry Potter What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? My mother used to tell her children endlessly that “La vie est dure et difficile et pas juste” (‘Life is hard, difficult and not just’). Very good advice which I have passed on to my children and they to theirs. What is the most trouble you have ever been in? In 1978 I was the newly-appointed navigator of HMS Ambuscade. We docked at Rosyth with a broken gearbox which would take overnight to repair. As it was my birthday, that evening I was treated to endless drinks when the Captain suddenly appeared and announced the gearbox was fixed and we would sail in 10 minutes. Somehow, despite seeing double the number of marker buoys, we managed to get out into clear water without putting the ship aground! LANDLORDS by Lorraine Hutley
Friends .......... It seems like the ideal solution, rather than leave your home empty or have a stranger living there, you have a really good friend who would love to move in – the perfect partnership, or is it? The initial appeal to the homeowner is that their friend will look after the place ‘as if it were their own’ – one of the biggest fears for landlords is that their home will be trashed by strangers. Another common concern is ‘What if they don’t pay the rent?’ Somehow people feel that as they can trust a ‘friend’, defaulting on the rent would be unthinkable. There is a possibility that you could return to a property which has not been looked after, needs costly repairs, the rent hasn’t been paid, or the worst case scenario – a lengthy court battle and a friendship in tatters.
and Family ......... Then there’s the dilemma if you have young adults still living at home, desperate for their own space but without the funds to buy their own place – do you offer them a leg up by allowing them to be your tenants? Approach this one with extreme caution. As a parent you might find yourself very low on the list of priorities if their finances hit a rocky patch.
But if nothing can persuade you against it, here’s how you can minimise the risk: It’s business not pleasure– it may seem unnecessary to formalise things but a deposit and Tenancy Agreement is essential so that both parties are aware of and agree to their obligations. Legally, you will be a landlord receiving rental income, which is liable for tax, and you will need to comply with legislation relating to deposits, gas safety and energy performance certificates. Keeping up appearances - if you’re going to work abroad, it would be wise to use an agent to manage the property. This way the property is inspected on a regular basis, and any issues flagged up immediately. A tenant will find it easier liaise with an agent than with you. A professional inventory, will establish the exact condition of the property and contents at the start, avoiding disputes in the future. Money matters – most people don’t like discussing money, especially with friends and family, so an agent will check that the rent is paid, chasing late payments should they arise. It would be an awkward moment having to ask a friend, son or daughter to pay up. It may seem like a good idea but it could be a recipe for disaster – think carefully. Talk to a specialist letting agent like Honey Lettings, who will be able to advise you on market value as well as legal and regulatory requirements. Based in the heart of Fleet, Honey Lettings specialises in lettings and property management. For friendly, knowledgeable advice on property letting call Honey Lettings. In 2017, after 20 years of successful trading in a Garden Centre site near Bagshot, we decided to venture onto the High Street and opened a new showroom in Fleet. It was by no means a straight forward or easy decision especially against the back drop of Brexit, continued rate rises, online competition and the Mary Portas TV shows! Nevertheless we were convinced our formula would work. We have a fantastic choice of products, 70% of which are our own brand, we mainly deal directly with manufactures so our prices are surprisingly competitive, we offer a unique and exceptional service all combined with a refreshingly stylish, individual look and presentation. With great excitement, anticipation and eager to show off our beautiful products we opened our doors on Fleet High Street on the 1st April 2017. The following 12 months have been really exciting, following a fantastic opening day with over 500 visitors, through to the Carnival and Christmas events being particular highlights we have welcomed so many new customers to the unique and very special Pavilion Interiors brand. Behind the scenes we are busy pushing forward our marketing program, a new web site, www. pavilioninteriors. com, social media marketing has been a key part as well as magazines and even a
Pavilion Interiors - Our First Year in Fleet roundabout on the edge of Odiham! Keep an eye out for our special offers and giveaway competitions especially the freebies, we all love a freebie!
Our in house design team has been exceptionally busy introducing new and exclusive furniture collections; new designs will be arriving in the showroom in the coming months. This Spring we have 2 brand new and exclusive designed beds arriving in two sumptuous velvet fabrics together with a new sofa design. Our own newly designed cabinet furniture collection, The Greywell Collection, arrived last autumn, it sold out in 8 weeks and became our fastest selling collection ever! We were taken by surprise with its popularity and we now have some great news, we have added four new pieces to this collection and our next delivery will be here in late Spring. We have another collection also arriving in late Spring, The Dorset Collection, a traditionally designed, solid hardwood collection finished in a contemporary white wash with polished granite tops. The first pieces will be arriving soon to compliment our Greywell Collection. Once again working directly with manufacturers allows us to create our own totally exclusive collections at fantastic prices. In the showroom we have an amazing collection of mirrors, lighting, artwork, occasional furniture and room accessories on display. Once again many of these pieces are exclusive to Pavilion Interiors. Often furniture and accessories can look underwhelming and uninspiring on the screen of a web site but seeing them
displayed in our beautiful room settings really brings them to life. Come and see for yourself, even if you are just seeking inspiration and design ideas you are sure to be very impressed. Everyday we hear wonderful and very encouraging comments from our visitors who love the showroom. Fleet is a great place to live and despite the really significant difficulties with online competition your High Street has some great shops. Come and have a look and see what they have to offer and please don’t forget to support your local independent businesses. Great products, value for money and good old-fashioned customer service is too important to allow to just fade away. Pavilion Interiors has the best of everything, owner managed independence to ensure you are looked after as a truly valued customer, unique and inspirational furniture of exceptional quality, experienced staff who can offer worthwhile and genuine advice that can only be accrued with over 20 years of experience, exceptional in store service together with a home delivery service that far exceeds anything our online competitors can offer.
Happy Birthday and here’s to another successful year. Fleet Life May 2018 | 19
No fault divorce? It is a commonly held view that if both parties in a marriage have formed the view that their marriage is over, they can proceed with a divorce on the basis of “irreconcilable differences”, with no blame being attached to either party. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Matrimonial law, which is based on a statute passed as long ago as 1973, requires that a divorce (or dissolution of a civil partnership in the case of many same-sex couples) is founded on the fact that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. To establish this, it is necessary to rely on one of five facts: • The respondent has committed adultery and the petitioner finds it intolerable to live with the respondent • The respondent has behaved in such a way that the petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with the respondent • The parties have been living separately for at least two years and the respondent consents to the divorce • The respondent has deserted the petitioner for at least two years

As can be seen, if the parties do not wish to wait two years before divorcing, it is necessary for one party to “blame” the other for the breakdown of the marriage. This is not conducive to concluding the marriage amicably and this can be damaging, particularly if the parties are going to have to continue to deal with each other if there are children. In 2012, there were over 72,000 divorces where adultery or unreasonable behaviour were cited.

The Supreme Court is due to decide the widely reported case in which a wife was not granted a divorce because she could not demonstrate that her husband’s behaviour had been unreasonable. The other four facts did not apply. The husband opposed the divorce application claiming that the breakdown was not irretrievable. The wife’s evidence alluded to her husband prioritising work over family life, making her feel unappreciated because he had not provided her ‘with love, attention or affection and was not supporting of her role as a homemaker and mother’, their having arguments and his having embarrassed her by chastising her in front of others. set the law to allow ‘divorce on no enthusiasm whatsoever’ that the marriage must, in the absence of the husband’s agreement, continue until the separation has lasted for five years. Resolution, which is an organisation of family law professionals whose aim is to avoid unnecessary confrontation between separating couples, has been leading a campaign to try and change the law to allow people to divorce without for change. Successive Presidents of the Family Division have stressed the need for reform. Many other countries around the world – including Australia, the United States, and Spain – allow for divorce without blame. Let us hope that we do not have to wait another 45 years for a change in matrimonial law! All the family lawyers at Wheelers LLP are members of Resolution who follow their Code of Practice.

There was a time when dress codes were simple to understand. Business dress meant exactly that; a suit and, for men, a tie. Formal meant a black tie and tuxedo for men and a long frock for the ladies. However, it’s become more complicated in recent years, especially with ‘dress-down Friday’ the norm in many workplaces and ‘smart casual’ often quoted on invitations. So, what exactly is the difference between Casual, Smart Casual, Business Casual and Business dress? Guidelines for ‘business dress’ are thankfully pretty straightforward. For men, a suit with a complementary long-sleeved shirt and tie, dark socks and polished shoes; a skirt/trouser suit or tailored dress, tights and closed toe shoes for women. There is a trend in some workplaces for men not to wear ties, in which case the shirt collar should not be too stiff – an Oxford weave, perhaps with a button-down collar, is ideal. Some employers accept a more relaxed ‘business casual’ dress, particularly for non-customer facing staff or whilst on training courses and internal meetings. This dress code can be tricky as it’s often undefined. A good guideline is “dressing professionally, looking relaxed yet neat and pulled together.” Business casual for men is typically: • Smart jacket/blazer and non-matching trousers with soft collar shirt, tie optional • Smart trousers or chinos, shirt, no jacket, tie optional • A polo shirt in summer but not

a t-shirt, unless worn under a sweater or jacket • Smart shoes, not trainers For women, ‘business casual’ usually means: • Jacket or cardigan and shirt with non-matching tailored trousers or skirt • Dress worn with a jacket/ cardigan, especially if sleeveless • Smart shoes - avoiding killer heels and trainers ‘Smart casual’ relates to dressing for a social not a work setting. The main differences are in the type of jacket worn, which could be less structured, like a leather jacket, smart jeans (without rips) and t-shirts (no slogans) and shoes (in suede or loafers). ‘Dress-down Fridays’ that allow workers to wear more casual attire have become widespread
in recent years. Some employers helpfully specify what ‘casual’ means. Where there is no dress policy, avoid wearing shorts, sportswear, flip flops, vests or strappy tops. It’s worth bearing in mind that you are still at work, ladies, so nothing too short, low-cut or see-through if you want to maintain some degree of professionalism! Denim is now widely accepted in many workplaces, especially where the culture is younger and more relaxed. A smart pair of denim jeans worn with a fitted jacket/blazer and a crisp white shirt can look really professional. Steve Jobs famously wore the same look - a black turtleneck, blue jeans and ‘sneakers’ throughout his career (some say he did this to save his mental energy for his job). Indeed, those people who have to wear a prescribed uniform find dressing for work a lot easier. Ultimately, you may not care about what you wear and how you’re perceived. If your image does matter to you, it’s worth sparing a thought for the impact you want to create and how to dress appropriately for that.

Last month I shared my story of how I made a complete life change after a serious ‘burnout’ in 2015 and went on to retrain and set up my own business as a coach. I make it sound so simple don’t I? Of course, big life changes are never that simple and so I thought I’d share with you some of the tools and techniques I’ve used that I also share with my private clients. One of the biggest obstacles in my way was my own self-belief. I would say things to myself like “I’m too old to start over again,” “I’m too young to be a coach – I don’t have enough life experience!” “I’m not confident enough to start my own business,” “I don’t know what I’m doing or how to get there.” You get the picture! It was all very negative and it felt completely overwhelming and too big to handle. Many of my clients come to me feeling much the same too. It can be paralysing and it’s often the feelings of fear and overwhelm that stop us from doing what we really want to do and living out our dreams. But how can you overcome all those fears and concerns, because they’re very real aren’t they? It’s partly about learning to think more positively, building on
Revitalise Your Life By Jenny Thomas, Confidence & Career Coach at Revitalise Coaching
Welcome to this month’s column helping you to revitalise your life! not even aware of the negative self talk we have and how much it holds us back. If you’ve got a dream or something big you’ve been wanting to do for ages, ask yourself ‘What’s stopping me?’ and write down all the negative stuff that starts coming up! I’m not saying that it’s not all real, I have no doubt that it is right now. But, it’s important to acknowledge it and get it down on paper so that you can start to address it.

Looking at what you’ve written down, how much of it is surprising? How much of it were you already aware of? Keep going with it until you’ve exhausted all the reasons, challenges and obstacles getting in your way.
effective way to start
Take one of the reasons you’ve written down, how can you re-word it to make it sound more positive? For example, “I’m too old to start over again” could be re-worded to be “I’ve got years of experience behind me that can help me now”. Another example could be, “I’m just overwhelmed
could be re-worded as “when I break things down into small steps they’re much more manageable.” Take some time and re-write all the negative or disempowering sentences into positive or empowering ones. Notice how you feel when you write out the sentences in a more positive way. With practice, this can be a really simple but highly transforming a cycle of negative, disempowering thoughts into a natural cycle of positive thoughts. Imagine what you could achieve with your new, positive thoughts? Please find me on FB, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn for daily support – get in touch, I’d love to hear from you! Take care,
our existing strengths and taking it one step at a time. An exercise I encourage a lot of my clients to complete is to start noticing what their negative thoughts are and to write them down. Often we’re

Rosie’s Good Reads The Friendship Cure by Kate Leaver is a nonfiction book which considers multiple friendship types we all have and considers the part they play in our lives. There’s a lovely part about how companionship can be linked to longevity. This is the type of book which could be an ideal gift to the right sort of friend in your own life. Hiding by Jenny Morton Potts is a thriller. It is a tale of troubled upbringings, of cold, calculated killers and of murder and vengeance. Keller and Rebecca live on different sides of the Atlantic. Rebecca knows nothing of Keller. But he’s known about her for a very long time, and now he wants to destroy her. The Usurper King by Zeb Haradon is set in an alternative universe in which the crimes of Ted Bundy have not been discovered, and he is now running for president, as a Republican. Recommended to anyone who likes clever observational humour of the dry American kind. 28 | Fleet Life May 2018
Jimmy The House Spider by Raymond T Davis is children’s fiction about the adventures of Jimmy the house spider, spending his days with grandpa. Jimmy spends most of his days in Grandpa’s pocket. But there are still dangers to navigate, including a cat and a pond full of hungry creatures… The Trial by John Mayer is urban crime fiction set in Scotland. The author of The Trial was an advocate in the Supreme Courts of Scotland, and he made good use of his knowledge of the Scottish legal system in this, his first book in the Parliament House Series.

Dennie is trying to bring ‘back’ gentlemanly type romance … where a lady is treated right and the gent always opens the door. I felt I should recount … I drove an American girlfriend to a party and she wouldn’t get out until I’d opened her car door. I had a great night. On my own. Dennie worked in 7 salons and then took over and runs her own successful place SalonVintage62 in Selsdon, South Croydon. I asked – years of salon industry experience helped you hit the ground running. Why then would you expect to go into a crowded dating market with zero knowledge, just a decent idea? Well she is determined and doesn’t take no for an answer, although £8,000 with (third time lucky) web developers have made it a tough experience. Guest on the phone was Dennie’s supportive HR guru friend Karen Myring who said if anyone can do it; she can!

Gillian Clarke - Accountant WHAT! Project Leader - Rotary Club of Fleet
Founded in Chicago in 1905, the first ‘Rotarians’ started in London in 1912 to “bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to advance goodwill and peace around the world”. Events include Stroke Awareness – they will take your blood pressure in Hart Shopping Centre on 7th April – every year at least a couple of people are asked to seek quick medical attention. The Fleet Family Fun Walk is 8.2 miles and on the 28th of April. Gillian is looking for small businesses in Fleet to help by getting involved. Roy tried to start an argument saying that Lions Club was better, but Gillian was ever professional and came back with “We support each others’ events”.
After years as a bookkeeper, Gillian joined forces with Chris to do the full accountancy role as Accounting Clarkes. Working with your partner must propose challenges at the best of times but with an office to escape to and Clients needing visiting it seems a nice balance was struck. Guest songs: By playing David Essex and ‘Rock On’, Gillian enabled it to become the most requested song of all time on The Interview Show. Played for the 3rd time in 4 years! Thanks to phone guests Andy Kirk a former fighter navigator and Rotarian and Mandy Dineley Penney who came on to talk about an event by the Farnham WI on International Women’s Day. Dementia is not a disease in itself. Dementia is a word used to describe a collection of symptoms that occur when brain cells stop functioning properly. The most common cause of Dementia is Alzheimer’s disease but there are others. One of the greatest problems in recognising the various forms of Dementia is that it affects people in different ways. However, some of the most common signs to watch out for are: Memory loss - declining memory is probably the most readily recognised symptom. This is more than just forgetfulness. A person may not only forget someone’s name but not recognise that person as their neighbour or relative. Increase in dependency - a classic example being an increase in the number of phone calls. It can appear quite normal at first but often escalates to the point where the frequency of the calls is disturbing. Confusion as to time and place - we can all lose track of time momentarily but for people living with Dementia, this takes on another dimension. They will often forget the day of the week, forget where they live, or want to return to a home they lived in many years ago. Mood swings or unusual behaviour - a person with Dementia may exhibit a change in their demeanour, becoming unusually emotional, perhaps irritable or experience rapid mood swings. Misplacing things - anyone can temporarily misplace their

This month we will be looking at the signs that could indicate someone is developing dementia. wallet or keys but a person with Dementia may put things in unusual places, with neither reason nor logic. In the early stages, they will realise that they have misplaced something and become frustrated when they cannot find it. The Jekyll and Hyde factor someone living with Dementia may seem to take on a completely different personality. The familiar becomes an ordeal - often simple tasks like getting dressed and putting clothes on in the right order, or the appropriate clothes for the current weather conditions don’t make sense. Lack of drive - watch out for feelings of lethargy, being content to watch TV for hours, sleeping more than usual, losing interest in hobbies, and things like unopened post, unpaid bills and strange changes in diet etc.

“I delivered one of these the other day and the chap didn’t want to drive it,” says the delivery driver. “Oh,” I reply, a little perplexed, admiring the finish of this particular model. “Couldn’t he drive?” I ask. “He just sat and listened to the stereo.” “Really? Was he all there?” I question. “He worked for one of the hi-fi magazines and he was testing the £3,000 sound system, an added extra in the top of the range model. I stayed with him on his driveway for 40 minutes and he really cranked up the volume.” “I better pay a bit more attention to stereos from now on then,” I replied. My first impression is that this V60 stands taller than the standard model thanks to its raised height. The fact that it is an all wheel drive model not only makes it super safe on the roads but it also means that it is at home in the countryside. What better place to test this out than a trek down the motorway to the market town of Andover. Traditionally Volvos have been associated with manufacturing standard road going cars that are supremely safe. I can see why they have ventured into the all wheel drive market though; Sweden in winter is undoubtedly a treacherous place to drive. What really appeals about a four wheel drive Volvo is that it is extra safe because all wheels are talking to each other so to speak. This is a permanent thing so there’s no need to faff about engaging it. For an impatient soul such as me this is great news because it means that one moment I can be driving on a country lane and the next minute pottering through open farmland without a care in the world. It’s an

extremely competent vehicle and it is only severe ruts in the land that alerts passengers to the fact that they are off-roading. “Must you do this?” questions my long suffering wife as our three children Harriett (6), Heidi (4) and Henry (15mths) doze in the rear. They barely bat an eyelid as the vehicle quite happily travels across the farmland. It hasn’t been raining for a couple of weeks so the ground is pretty dry so there’s no boggy challenges to encounter, more’s the pity but I suspect it would take such situations in its stride. The six-speed automatic gearbox coupled to the responsive 2.4-litre diesel engine makes for a car that is thoroughly enjoyable to drive. This does not feel like an estate car but much more of a sports car. If a little extra oomph is required then sports gear can be selected at a push of the gear stick. That boot though is not as large as it needs to be for the Saunders family. You see little Heidi does like to take all sorts of luggage with her on an excursion, so much so that we have to remove the retracting parcel shelf to make space, which isn’t ideal. If everything is to be stored below the parcel shelf there really isn’t much space to play with. The raised ride height and the spare tyre eat into the available room. Aside from this the black all leather interior is hardwearing and comfortable. It is pleasing to see an electric tilt/slide glass sunroof as well as air conditioning and all round electric windows. Power folding wing mirrors are always a distinct advantage for roadside parking. Being a Volvo it is fitted
with intelligent cruise control that reads the traffic ahead and reacts accordingly in terms of speed by automatically braking or accelerating. When reversing the wing mirrors automatically drop so that the driver can clearly see the sides of the road behind. There is also a useful reversing camera that appears in the centre console as you can see in the video at www.testdrives.biz. However, this system is not infallible and the driver needs to be extremely alert, especially when reversing on my driveway. Why? Because as you can see in the video there is a brick pillar on the left hand side which can be easily forgotten about, making it an accident waiting to happen. To my surprise there are no warning beeps reminding me of this obstacle and the driver could miss it if they’re not looking at the camera carefully. If the wing mirrors did not automatically drop when reversing this issue could be overcome. Perhaps there is a way to override this setting but I have not discovered it. Overall, I do like this Volvo and feel quite at home behind the wheel. The children like it too and that’s important for a family vehicle.

QUESTION I can't afford to heat our conservatory in winter, so we don't use it. Can you help?
ANSWER It's all down to the heat loss through your conservatory roof. You can fit blinds but the best solution is to replace the roof with a lightweight, fully insulated Guardian™ roof. It will also help to keep your conservatory comfortable during summer.

Want the look of a traditional timber window frame with all the advantages of PVCu? The Liniar flush sash window was developed for the more traditional property where the sash needed to be fitted flush into the frame – and which, with foiling, could look just like a timber window.
