A new wave of Flemish theatre The 2017 programme of Big in Belgium is all about performing with no 4th wall, no barrier between audience and performer. It’s about performances that range from ‘acknowledging that the audience is there’ to direct engagement with that audience, making them to some degree complicit in what the show will become on that particular day. Mireille & Mathieu invite all ages to take a look at their flea-market offerings, while bringing all forms of incomplete toys and broken puppets to life. Arm unfolds in the best traditions of Flemish absurdity and very un-Disney-like visual entertainment. In On Ice, a young woman will literally be on ice, while trying to explain how she gradually regained a grip on her life and loved ones. Suzanne Grotenhuis performs her story with a beautiful directness and has written one of the strongest pieces of new writing coming from Flanders this year. Without a doubt it will be fascinating to see Julie Cafmeyer reverse that approach and with Bombastic Declaration of Love; instead of focusing on the writing, actually debate the current state of her love life with the audience. It’s here where we probably will encounter the most intimate approach towards the spectators this year. Enkidu Khaled’s Working Method could also be a show that succeeds in doing that. While using a dramaturgical technique drawn from his acting lessons in Baghdad, he will make his audience do the math on the art-and-what-is-itgood-for equation. More numbers are to be taken into account, when joining Ontroerend Goed in playing a game as a banker, and becoming one of the 1%. Will any of you, while joining in the company’s brand new show £¥€$, be more responsible and less immoral than banks are today? Finally, we’d like to introduce Tibaldus, who are bringing their new show Ivona, Princess of Burgundia. They reintroduce the fourth wall but bend it in a circle and completely lock themselves in. The audience is able to inspect how they themselves are spectating and amidst of all that curiosity, there is theatre as pure and as crafty as you will have ever seen.

BOMBASTIC DECLARATION OF LOVE JULIE CAFMEYER Photos of ex-boyfriends, emails, texts, audio recordings and poetry. Struggling with her love life, Julie Cafmeyer experiences orgasms, despair, rejection and heaven. In an intimate setting, and with you the audience, she strives to create a genuine connection. A show that’s both vulnerable yet utterly fearless, giving us an insight into the heartaches that we all share. Fascinated by human dynamics, Julie pushes the boundaries of the private atmosphere and utilizes the spectator as an intimate participant in her work.

ON ICE SUZANNE GROTENHUIS The young performer Suzanne Grotenhuis won a prize for her previous theatre show at a Belgian theatre festival. The money was meant to produce a new show. But she decided to spend the entire prize money on buying an actual ice skating rink. Why she did that and why this ice skating rink somehow seems to be the solution for a broken heart, will be revealed in her funny, absurd and moving show On Ice.

A hypnotic, tongue-in-cheek antidote to the glittering circus world. You’re invited beyond the everyday 1, 2, 3 of juggling into an ever-changing space, where performers balance objects and throw bodies, rendering failure just as visible as sweat. The cast of five’s natural movement is part playful game and part sabotage. Set to an original soundtrack, Ea Eo use the basic tools of the trade - balls and clubs – to deconstruct the rules of juggling and play with the audience’s expectations to delightful effect.
