A message from our Patron - Anita Rani
I am really honoured to be a patron of the Big Imaginations Festival which is dedicated to bringing brilliant children’s theatre to the North West. I grew up in Bradford and early theatre opportunities allowed me to see that a journey and career in the arts is possible for young people like me. Big Imaginations and lead partner Z-arts are committed to investing in the voice of diverse artists; paving the way for the best work for young people to truly reflect our society and beyond. This year’s festival will appeal to diverse audiences of all ages and I am delighted that a centre piece of the festival is Child of the Divide, by Sudha Bhuchar; marking the 70th anniversary of the partition of India. This is a compelling subject that is close to my heart. Have a great festival – Anita
Rani

nce upon a time, in a kingdom on top of the highest mountain in all the land, there lived a grouchy Queen, and her son, the Prince. The Prince was always getting into trouble for slouching, running, burping, dancing and not behaving very princely at all! His mother decided that he needed to marry the perfect princess to finally become a grown-up and a proper King. Hundreds of princesses came from all over the kingdom, but the Prince wasn’t impressed by any of them... until one princess arrived accompanied by her brother. Happily Ever After is a hilarious show from Action Transport Theatre, created in partnership with The Proud Trust. ATT’s signature highly visual, wordless storytelling and comedy clowning will delight audiences of all ages.

Big Imaginations have commissioned three shows for children aged 8+ that speak to today’s audiences and are reflective of the society we live in. You, Me and I and Adrift will be presented as works in progress at the festival before being developed into full scale touring productions and Child of the Divide is going on a national tour. You, Me & i by Urban Conceptz Theatre is a silent piece of theatre that mixes innovative storytelling, stunning audio visual technology, mask work and explosive movement theatre. Using a set of headphones, You, Me & i takes each audience member on a personal journey through a large-scale steel structure, inviting them to trace the parallels of three potent stories exploring life as a young person in today’s fast-paced and judgemental world. Adrift by Action Transport Theatre, written by Beverly Hancock-Smith tells the story of two young people in a boat. One is rowing. One is fishing. Their talk is light-hearted; of catching a fish, a fish so big it will capsize the boat, of harnessing a dolphin who will pull the boat along so Miriam no longer has to row, of pirates and buried treasure and mermaids who sing beautiful but haunting melodies…. as the play progresses, it becomes clear that Miriam and Kalib are not only addressing each other, but another character hidden from view, laid out along the bottom of the boat: their mother.
