Dogs, Lady Dogs move on with blowout wins in opening round

SPERRY - The Okmulgee varsity basketball teams got back to their winning ways here on Monday with a pair of blowout victories. The lopsided wins for the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs came in the opening round of the Sperry Exchange Bank Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Sperry Fieldhouse. The Lady Bulldogs (3-1) advanced to Friday's semifinal round with a 65-19 decision over the Tulsa Webster Lady Warriors in the tournament opener. The Bulldogs (2-2) snapped their 2-game losing streak in the final opening-round contest on Monday with a 64-44 victory over the Glenpool Warriors. The Okmulgee cage squads will return to Sperry Friday for semifinal action with the OHS ladies battling the winner of Tuesday's openinground meeting between Skiatook and the Beggs JV at 4 p.m. Friday, while the Okmulgee gentlemen will take on the winner between Grove and the host Sperry Pirates, who battled in firstround action on Tuesday, at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. Before traveling to Sperry on Friday, the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs welcomed the Wagoner Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs to historic Brock Memorial Gymnasium for their home opener. The girls game was scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys game to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. After semifinal action in Sperry on Friday, the OHS squads will head back to Sperry on Saturday to complete their participation at the week-long Sperry Tournament. Wins on Friday will propel the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs into the tournament finals at 7 and 8:30 p.m., respectively, while losses on Friday will put the OHS cagers in Saturday's third-place contests at 4 and 5:30 p.m., respectively. After this weekend's action in Sperry, the Okmulgee cage squads will close out their firsthalf schedule next Tuesday at home against OKC Millwood, beginning with girls action at 6:30 p.m. In the Lady Bulldogs' tournament-opening meeting with Tulsa Webster, the OHS ladies led from start to finish, tallying the first 11 points of the contest before the Lady Warriors got on the scoreboard late in the first period. A basket by Sahmeya King closed out the opening frame with the Lady Bulldogs in front by a 13-2 margin. The Okmulgee cage squad increased its lead to 32-8 at halftime after outscoring their firstround foes 19-6 in the second stanza, then outscored Tulsa Webster by a combined 33-11 in the second half, which included a 20-6 advantage in the third quarter, to punch their ticket to the tournament semifinal round with a convincing 65-19 victory. Three Okmulgee players finished in double figures in the lopsided win. McKenzie James led all scorers with a game-high 18 points. King was next for the Lady Bulldogs with 14, followed by Kailey Ward with 13. Destiny Jordan finished with seven points for OHS, followed by Katie McKinney, in her first action of 2017-18, with four points, and Mercedes Cosby with three. The trio of Danielle Yargee, Myesha Cosby, and Tierney Gardner rounded out the scoring for the victorious Lady Bulldogs with two points apiece. In the boys opening-round showdown with Glenpool, the Bulldogs led by five, 7-2, midway through the opening frame. Glenpool closed out the first period with a 9-2 run to lead 11-9 after one quarter of action. A 3-point basket by Keauno Gibson gave Okmulgee a 14-13 advantage in the early stages of the second period, then Glenpool regained the lead at 15-14 with an answering basket. Anfernee Nelson's 3-pointer put the Bulldogs back on top, 17-15, and sparked a 14-0 run that put the Okmulgee gentlemen on top by 13 points, 28-15. Glenpool ended the Bulldog run with a basket, then the Okmulgee cagers closed out the second period with an 8-4 run to go into the halftime break with a 36-21 advantage. The Warriors edged out the Bulldogs 13-12 in the third quarter to send the teams to the final eight minutes of regulation with Okmulgee still in front by double digits, 48-34. A 12-1 run by the Bulldogs at the start of the final frame sealed the opening-round victory for the Okmulgee gentlemen. Glenpool took the final three minutes of regulation by a 9-4 margin, but it was the Bulldogs that walked away with the 64-44 victory and a spot in Friday's semifinal round. The Nelson brothers - Devion and Anfernee led the way offensively for the victorious Okmulgee squad. Devion Nelson finished with a game-high 19 points, while younger brother Anfernee was one point behind with 18 points.
