La Giraldilla de La Habana, una leyenda de amor
They say that Geronimo, the metal smelter who became an artist, heard the story of Isabel de Bobadilla: the first and only lady who has ruled over the destiny of the island. However, the detail that inspired the artist was not the power of this woman, but her unconditional love and loyalty to her husband, Hernando de Soto, a military officer. This man became Captain General by royal order and he was the first to worry about the fortification of the old village. In the month of May of the year 1539, the honorable gentleman leaves to the conquest of Florida in the company of nine hundred men and leaves the weight of ruling over his beloved wife. In the north, he conquered Florida, discovered the Mississippi River and, during his quest to find the fountain of eternal youth, he died due to a strange fever.
Every day as of March 12, 1540, right when the fortress was completed, Lady Isabel ascended to the watchtower, looking for the ship that would bring her beloved husband or at least some news about him. Despite the distance and the sad uncertainty, the lady used all her prestige, intelligence and discretion to be an excellent governor. Nowadays, the statue that was inspired by this love story is located on the side of the Castillo de La Fuerza, inviting the traveler to discover the treasures of the fortress and its personal legend. On top, there is a replica. Do not forget to visit the statue... get closer to its legend and, of course, admire with your own eyes the treasures that La Fuerza shelters.
