FELLOW EXPLORERS, Explore the Bible: Kids began as an answer to a need that our team heard over and over again from KidMin leaders like yourselves—“Give us a curriculum that immerses kids in the Bible!” As a mom of three kids and a former KidMin leader, I share this passion and urgency. God speaks through His Word and if we expect life transformation, not just behavior modification, we need to give kids a deeper dive into the Scriptures. The truth is, we want kids to love God’s Word so much that they “hide it away in their hearts” so that when pressures of life and choices present themselves, they remember the truth so well that they “may not sin against (Him).” As we prayed for wisdom in crafting a quality curriculum for kids, we began by asking this question: “How do we help empower leaders to teach the Bible to kids in an exciting and engaging way that will make kids want to dig deep?” My career background is education—specifically museum education, where object-based learning is one of the main teaching methods used in educational exhibit design. It’s used to evoke inductive study and discovery learning. Our team decided to implement these methods as an entry point to looking at the biblical text. For example, what can we learn from looking carefully at a boat that underwater archaeologists discovered at the bottom of the Sea of Galilee? A boat that is similar to the one Jesus and His disciples rode through the storm in one dark night? Can it help kids want to ask more questions, know more of the story, or even imagine what it may have been like to see Jesus calm the storm? More than that, how can it lead to a deeper understanding that Jesus is all-powerful all throughout Scripture?

Explore the Bible: Kids will take kids on a book-by-book, truth-by-truth journey through the living Word. Through Scripture study, cross-referencing, historical maps, interactive infographics, and object-based learning, kids will experience the Bible like never before. Get ready to take a deeper dive, immersing young souls in the Scriptures and watching life transformation happen before your very eyes. Get ready to open this love letter to all of us and show kids what their Maker wants them to see and hear from Him. Get ready to Explore the Bible! Joyfully,

FOR THE LEADER

Hebrews 1:1-4 The Book of Hebrews reveals and explains truths about Jesus that are not treated in depth in other Bible books. In Hebrews we learn much about Jesus as the great High Priest, the perfect Sacrifice, and the Mediator of the new covenant. These truths call for believers to endure in their devotion to Jesus Christ even in times of severe trials. These major themes are all present in seed form in Hebrews 1:1-4. Keep in mind that the writer of Hebrews was addressing a beloved group of people. Like most churches today, the group probably included some strong believers and some weak ones. Perhaps there were a few who professed faith in Christ but were not genuine believers. Some believers at the time Hebrews was written may have shown bold devotion in the past but now were wilting in the face of persecution. The biblical writer showed loving pastoral concern for his readers. He was concerned that some of them might decide the cost of discipleship was too high. He may have feared that some were ready to cave in and go back to Judaism and its practices. So what is the remedy for weak faith? The remedy starts with a better understanding of God’s Word and what it means. The meat of God’s Word is the answer for faltering faith! It fuels our faith and drives us deeper in our devotion to Christ. The writer of Hebrews knew that if his readers understood who Jesus is and what Jesus has done for them, then they would stand strong and not waver. The same is true for us. When our hearts are set on Jesus and His Word, then we can walk in faith without wavering. The antidote for weak faith is spiritual strength. We can think of it as building our spiritual and theological muscles. Studying the Book of Hebrews under the Spirit’s guidance will fortify us for the challenges of our day.

SESSION BRIEF Today’s Core Passage, Hebrews 1:1-4, identifies Jesus as the full revelation of God to humanity. Through Jesus, we can understand God’s character and the gospel message. Preschoolers will learn about Jesus and who He is, beginning with the story of His birth. Session activities will link the Hebrews passage to the related Bible story, “A Special Birth.” As you interact with preschoolers, say Jesus’ name often and sing and talk about Him.

OTHER BIBLE PHRASE God said, “This is My Son.” Matthew 3:17

God planned for Jesus to be born. God helped a man named Isaiah know that one day God would send His Son, Jesus, to the world. Isaiah wrote about God’s plan so that people would begin to look forward to Jesus’ coming. Many years passed. It was time for the things Isaiah had written about to happen. God sent an angel to visit a young girl named Mary and tell her some news. “Mary,” the angel said, “God has chosen you to have a special baby. The baby’s name will be Jesus.” This news surprised Mary, but she loved God and said, “I will do whatever God says.”

LEADER TIP! Rather than focus on the Christmas-related aspects of this week’s Bible story, emphasize the fact that Jesus had a family. God chose people to care for Jesus, teach Him, and love Him. Preschoolers can relate to the experiences that Jesus had as a real-life baby and child while He lived on earth.

Then the angel went to Joseph’s house. While Joseph dreamed, the angel told him about Mary. “Take Mary home and care for her,” the angel told Joseph. “She will have a special baby, and you are to name Him Jesus.” When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel said. He went to get Mary and take her to his house. Joseph cared for Mary while she waited for the baby to be born. When it was time, Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem. Joseph found a place for Mary to rest. Then Baby Jesus was born.

SET THE STAGE

SET THE STAGE FOR EXPLORATION 1. PREPARE FOR TEACHING • Review the teaching plan and practice using Bible-focused conversation. Pray for the preschoolers and their families. • Before children arrive, set out the materials needed for early arrivers. Put materials for Exploration Stations and Circle Time in baskets or paper bags and set them in the areas in which children will work. Teachers may want to set up the stations before class time. • Display posters and teaching reminders in suggested locations to remind you of the biblical focus for today. TOOLS

2. OFFER ARRIVAL ACTIVITIES (5 MINUTES) Offer two or three choices for preschoolers to explore: • sort pictures of babies, kids, and grownups • draw a family picture • spell the name Jesus using magnetic or wooden letter tiles

• picture cutouts of babies, kids, and grownups • paper and crayons or markers • magnetic or wooden letter tiles • baby rattle

3. GET STARTED (5 MINUTES) • When all the children have arrived and had an opportunity to do one or more arrival activities, shake a baby rattle to get the children’s attention. Ask: “Who plays with toys like this? Yes, babies. That’s who we are going to learn about today—a very special baby. Can anyone guess who that baby could be?” Listen to children’s responses. • Remark: “Babies are really special. Let’s see how much we can find out about the most special baby ever born.”

4. GO TO EXPLORATION STATIONS.

LISTEN TO SOUNDS Tools: Bible, two or three walkie-talkies or old cell phones (batteries removed) • Demonstrate how to talk on the walkie-talkie. Invite two children to go to opposite sides of the room and talk to each other on the walkie-talkies. Comment: “The angel went to Mary’s house to tell her some ver y special news. He told her that she would be Jesus’ mother.” • Ask children nearby if they have heard some special news. Listen, then respond appropriately to connect what the children say to hearing the good news about Jesus’ birth. • Open a Bible to Hebrews 1:2 and say: “Jesus is God’s Son.”

Tools: Bible, several pairs of small boxes (such as jewelry boxes); pennies, rice, dried beans, paper clips; clear packing tape • In each pair of boxes, put a small amount of one of the items listed. Tape around the boxes to make sure children cannot open them. • Invite children to shake the boxes and listen carefully to the sounds. Challenge preschoolers to decide which boxes make the same sounds. • Say: “Mary listened carefully to the angel’s news. The angel told Mary she would have a baby, God ’s Son, and His name would be Jesus.” • Open a Bible to Matthew 3:17. Tell the preschoolers that God said, “This [Jesus] is My Son.”
