Letter from the President and CEO Then I looked, and there was a large crowd of people. There were so many people that no one could count them all. They were from every nation, tribe, race of people, and language of the earth. They were standing before the throne and before the Lamb… Revelation 7:9 ERV

Dear Friends, It’s exciting to think about that day, isn’t it? This past year, you helped ensure that John’s vision becomes a reality. With your gift, you provided Bibles and training that helped under-resourced churches worldwide transform lives through God’s Word. People from every nation, tribe, race, and language found new life in Jesus Christ.

The Importance of Your Gift of God’s Word Poverty has made Bibles and training inaccessible and unavailable to believers worldwide for far too long. God’s Word transformed lives in 42 countries around the world. Under-resourced churches received what they needed most to meet the social, moral, and spiritual needs of their communities—God’s Word. Each day, church leaders saw firsthand the impact that God’s Word made on their members and in their communities. “God’s Word is transforming lives,” reports Pedro, a pastor in Latin America. “I have seen young people turn their lives around. I’ve seen broken marriages mended and families restored. But most of all, I have had the privilege to baptize new believers. People are embracing their new faith in Jesus Christ.”

Heartfelt Thanks Today, here on earth, we will never know the names of all those whose lives we touched with God’s Word. But one day, before the throne of God in glory, someone will embrace you with tears of gratitude and say, “Thank you! Because you cared enough to give me a Bible and made sure I understood it, I came to know Jesus as my Savior and put my trust in Him. That’s why I’m here today!” Until then, please accept our heartfelt thanks. Your gifts and prayers truly make an eternal difference in the lives of people around the world. In Christ,

Fiscal Year 2017 Ministry Impact Fiscal Year 2017 in Review Church leaders in a remote area of Kenya prayed for a long time to reach people in their communities with the truth of the Gospel. But they didn’t have Bibles. Today, they do—for the first time. God’s Word was an answer to their prayers and those of other grateful believers worldwide.

Global Challenges Persecution and restrictions on the Gospel grew in many parts of the world. While Islamic extremism did little to halt the outreach efforts of believers in some areas, hurricanes, earthquakes, and political instability in other areas did disrupt ministry at times. Despite challenges, believers around the world boldly shared the Gospel through Project Philip Bible studies, Church Planter Training, and Bible-based Literacy.

The Power of God’s Word Through it all, God’s Word prevailed—and the Lord added many to His Church, including young people. Nearly half of all those reached with the Gospel during the year were children and youth. As Project Philip Bible studies expanded into more prisons, a growing number of inmates worldwide found freedom in Jesus Christ. Church Planter Training was launched for the first time behind bars. Church Planter Training efforts grew outside of prison walls as well, particularly in the Philippines, India, Colombia, and Mexico. Bible-based Literacy opened doors to the Gospel in places like the Middle East, China, Bangladesh, and other areas where many oppose God’s Word.

A Bounty of Blessings Expressing thanks for your support, Subish, a church leader in India, echoes the sentiments of believers all around the world. “You helped to produce a hundred-fold of blessings,” he shares. “We pray that God will bless you for your love, your care, and your big hearts.” 4

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you… Matthew 28:19-20 NKJV 5

Fiscal Year 2017 Ministry Impact Spotlight on Persecution Opposition to the Gospel is on the rise in many parts of the world, especially in Asia. Still, brave believers there— and around the world—cling tightly to the promises they find in God’s Word. Many people in Asia who follow Jesus Christ are in grave danger. Pastor Nagaraj in southwest India is among the thousands of believers who suffered during the year. Hindu extremists beat him and burned his possessions, while local authorities looked the other way. In parts of Nepal and India, new anti-conversion laws now make it illegal to convert to Christianity. Government leaders in Bangladesh and Malaysia passed restrictions that put believers under intense scrutiny. Newly passed laws in China severely limited sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with children. Believers there didn’t let that stop them. They turned to Bible-based Literacy to reach the nation’s children. It may be the only legal way for churches in China to reach children with the Gospel in the future. Bible-based Literacy also proved highly effective in reaching other closed communities for Jesus Christ. Some church planters began using the program to share the Gospel in places where it is too dangerous to use Project Philip Bible studies.

Despite Opposition, God’s Church is Growing In the Philippines, believers boldly shared God’s Word in Mindanao, a Muslim stronghold in the southern part of the country. They wanted to stem the growth of Islam in the region. By God’s grace and with your gift of Bibles and training, they succeeded. In that area alone, they reached more than 100,000 people with God’s Word through Project Philip Bible studies. They also planted more than 200 new Bible-believing churches there. Even in the face of persecution, church leaders worldwide advanced God’s kingdom. 7

Fiscal Year 2017 Ministry Impact

God didn’t intend for His Word to be difficult. But the Good News is hard to understand for many of the people we seek to serve. They are among the world’s poorest of the poor and least educated, often living in remote isolated villages or poor urban centers. Many have never known or even heard of Jesus Christ.

The Importance of Easy-to-Read Translations People need to know the hope of the Gospel in a way they can understand and believe. Easy-to-read translations gave hundreds of thousands of people around the world that opportunity last year. Even those who read at only a most basic level found new life in Jesus Christ as they read God’s Word in everyday language. New believers as well as believers who received their very first Bible also embraced these translations. They were grateful to understand and apply God’s Word to their lives.

The Newest Translations The easy-to-read translation of the Haitian-Creole New Testament was completed and began being used for ministry in fiscal year 2017. Under-resourced churches in Mozambique also welcomed the release of the easy-to-read Portuguese Bible. The easy-to-read translation of the Swahili New Testament was finished just as the year ended. Believers in Kenya and elsewhere in East Africa now look forward to sharing it with others. The New Testament is expected to be printed early in 2018. In addition to continuing with the Haitian-Creole and Swahili Old Testaments, translation teams around the world worked on easy-to-read Bible translations in Croatian, Korean, Ukrainian, and Turkish. They also worked on Vietnamese Bible revisions. When God’s Word can be understood, lives are changed. 8
