Temperature 6th Grade Science Section 1
Factors Affecting Temperature
One main factor that determines the climate of a region is temperature. Temperature is influenced by latitude, altitude, distance from large bodies of water, and ocean currents.
Latitude and Altitude
Latitude divides the earth into three major temperature zones: tropical, temperate and polar. As altitude increases into highland areas the climate cools.
Large Bodies of Water
The distance from large bodies of water causes water to heat up and cool down more slowly than land. This creates mild marine weather with warm summers and cool summers.
Ocean currents are streams of water that move in patterns and change the temperature: cold currents bring cold water from the polar zones to the equator and warm currents bring warm water from the tropics to the poles.
What are the four factors that affect temperature?
