The traveling gallery of the intercontinental biennial of the indigenous arts Tour 2018

Greetings from the Office of the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Ecuador

Raul Perez Torres, Ministry of Heritage and Culture of Ecuador & Jorge IvĂĄn Cevallos

Beyond the political and ministerial presence that I currently represent, I want to address you as the officiant of the word that I have always been: a writer, an artist who from an early age felt the need to witness his most immediate reality; to question the multiple needs that our people have historically suffered; to propose and demonstrate before Latin America and the world, the aesthetic ruptures that confronted not only the prevailing tendencies in contemporary society but, that they founded and -of course-, consolidated Ecuadorian Art as one of the essential contributions in its goal to achieve human transcendence about the Universe. That is why I welcome the philosophy and pragmatism that animates artists, cultural managers, producers and other organizations linked to the Foundation and Community of Learning “Indigenous School of the Arts. Collective that for some years has been creating and strengthening intergenerational systems of knowledge transmission, oriented to safeguard the substantive elements that characterize the diverse ancestral cultures of America and other latitudes.

3

As I affirm, this is a diffusion and integration project that begins with the analysis of the multiculturalism of the world. A commitment that unites the efforts of several compatriots determined to collect the ancient manifestation of ancestral cultures and then a systematic and rigorous assessment, individualize them according to temporal, aesthetic or technical parameters that enhance the plastic excellence of all exhibitors. Samples that periodically are exhibited in important Galleries, Educational Institutions, Museums, Workshops and other spaces such as the magnificent Art Gallery of the National Autonomous University of Mexico - branch Chicago, which welcomes us tonight. In this sensually Gothic city I have felt the warm embrace, the brotherhood, the irrevocable commitments, the open spirit of compatriots who seek a different direction for their efforts. Painters of my country and other geographical demarcations that seek to exhibit and promote their works, despite the limitations that the market impose. For these and other considerations, I think that the Intercontinental Biennial of Indigenous Art and it’s Traveling Gallery is a relevant artistic project that not only demonstrates the expression, development, and pictorial transparency of the original indigenous communities, but also facilitates the opening of spaces where training and improvement of new talents, allow us to visualize the proposals and trends that distinguish the plastic art of our time. The Traveling Gallery of the Intercontinental Biennial of Indigenous Art brings together the plastic and human proposals of various artists and indigenous sectors that, from anonymity or silence, raise an original work that is often crossed by magic, chromaticism or, perhaps, also , determined by pain, anger, disagreement, the insurgency before so much abuse and dispossession that we have suffered for centuries. The Ministry of Culture and Heritage of Ecuador recognizes and values the multiple activities carried out by the organizers of this exhibit; emphasizes the firm purpose of arousing the progress of the new pictorial plastic proposals that spread throughout the world; seeks a fraternal embrace to each of the masters whose work is exposed and reiterates its commitment to accompany, promote and disseminate in any country in America, Europe, Africa or other continents, the creative expressions of our indigenous communities that day after day , strengthen the construction of a free, sovereign, deeply sensitive and willing to preserve their cultural singularities, beyond the moral crisis that the whole world suffers. presentation

Lucía Pazmiño Castro

The Intercontinental Biennial of the Indigenous Arts and its Traveling Gallery, constitutes a relevant project for the indigenous communities and artists, as well as for the art galleries, museums, universities or cultural centers around the world. This integrative nature is reflected in the structure of the project, which works to open suitable spaces for artistic creation, professional technical training and the preparation of new talents. It also favors the assembly of a first level exhibition, in which we can appreciate the tendencies and proposals of cultural groups and artists of native peoples, from the most diverse latitudes of the planet. For our country, Ecuador, it is an honor to have been able to structure and put at the service of the international community this visionary initiative, which does so much good to the art at all levels and that should be replicated in other countries, so that just as we do, you can cultivate, through this type of programs, the invaluable cultural, material and immaterial heritage of which we are heirs. We wish to greet the authorities at all levels, and specially to those who recognize the importance of indigenous art, respectfully requesting their support, so that the efforts made by the Foundation and Learning Community INDIGENOUS SCHOOL OF THE ARTS, represented by it´s founder, the Writer and Independent Producer Jorge Iván Cevallos, bear fruits on the basis of joint work among the various, in the progress of the Art of the original native nations, which is undoubtedly the progress of our societies. Lucia Pazmiño Castro Director of International Relations and Cultural Cooperation. MINISTRY OF CULTURE AND HERITAGE. REPUBLIC OF ECUADOR

WHO ARE WE Based in Ecuador the Indigenous School of Arts Foundation and our program Intercontinental Biennial of Indigenous, Millenarian or Ancestral Art are the pragmatic outcome of a process experienced over the years, by a collective of artists, cultural groups, institutions and organizations from different cultures and countries. The Travelling Gallery visits Portland-Main. USA

Among our objectives is to strengthen and develop systems of intergenerational transmission of knowledge, preserved and guided by the cultural elements of our Native Nations. We cultivate and share with artists and audiences around the world, the magic and wisdom of the Ancient Art through exhibitions and workshops, integrated into a Learning Community of itinerant character. Non profit Foundation and Community of Learning. Legal agreement. 2625. The Nacional Council of the Indigenous Peoples of Ecuador - CODENPE.

VALUES AND PRINCIPLES THAT INSPIRE US * Cause significant paradigm shifts. * Promote individual and collective construction of knowledge. * Come to knowledge from parameters of respect for nature and for the people who populate the universe, in his own cosmovision. * Recall the different experiences, ideas and educational practices, with a perspective of dialogue and exchange. * Strengthening community and family ties.

7

THE LEARNING

COMMUNITY - PHILOSOPHY - Are designed to bridge the gap between the formal and informal education, allowing the participation of groups traditionally excluded from existing systems. - Have the virtue of being shepherds of knowledge. - Provide an alternative to increase opportunities of access to collective learning processes. - Are autonomous and organized around their own reality. - Promote practical learning and empowerment, oriented towards the revaluation of Cultural Heritage and Human Talent. - Consider by design broad participation, giving equal weight and importance to the epistemological authorities (authorities in virtue of their knowledge), and the ontological authorities (authorities by title or academic degree). - It does not only work on behalf of the community, but also leaves mark on every person. Inspired by the principles determined by the Ecuadorian Confederation of the Indigenous Nationalities and Peoples - CONAIE – at the time of creation of the Intercultural University “Amawtay Wasi – The House of Wisdom”.

“Elsey Come Home is a triumph, a book of powerful women and even more powerful tradition. Contemporary China comes vividly to life alongside American friendships, family, and fortune good and bad.” Bill Roorbach, author of The Remedy of Love

“Elsey Come Home is a thing of wonder and beauty, a novel about faraway places, both internal and external. I read this in one thirsty gulp, and through its window was shown certain truths about the joy, pain, and intricacy of marriage, and of being. Susan Conley is a magical writer; this book is her magic.” Mike Paterniti, author of The Telling Room
