In 2016, I completed the five-year Master of Science in Business at BI, with a major in finance. During my final year, a faculty member from the Department of Finance suggested me to apply for the PhD programme. The thought of pursuing an academic career never struck me earlier, but I quickly came to realize it would be the right choice for me. During my time at BI, I had many opportunities to interact with members of the Department of Finance, all of whom I found to be very friendly and professional. They were passionate about their work and it seemed like a very good working environment. Most of the topics from the master degree were interesting and I particularly enjoyed studying those within finance. Also, the prospects of thoroughly immersing myself into one topic to acquire specialist knowledge were appealing, and the PhD programme in Finance at BI appeared to be the right platform to pursue this. I came to BI to do research on the global oil market. This work is at the intersection of industrial organization, political economy, econometrics, finance and macroeconomics. The Department of Economics at BI, with its strong and growing research expertise across these fields, is a natural fit. Initially, I was also drawn by the collegial and friendly atmosphere and professional organisation at BI. Through coursework, research and teaching I have sharpened and evolved my analytical toolbox. The breadth and relevance of the course portfolio teaches up-to-date theories and techniques and induces us to broaden our horizon, giving thorough preparation for our own work. Further foundation for success is provided by ample opportunities to tap into international research networks through exchanges and seminars. Finally, I have found the generous feedback and guidance from accomplished scholars particularly commendable, constructively directing and immeasurably improving our research.
