Sephora Shanghai Flagship Retail Store Location Shanghai, China Size 64,584ft2 | 6,000m2 Status Completed in 2013 Client Sephora

B+H was engaged to provide the facade design and interior design services for Sephora’s Shanghai flagship retail store, as well as the training centre and China HQ offices. The project involved extensive modification and refurbishment of the existing 64,500 square foot space, comprising the retail store and offices, across five floors. For the retail store, a dramatic red, white and black colour scheme was conceived, with polished

acrylic surfaces and dynamic organic shapes, featured throughout. In line with Sephora’s motto of “Excellence, Freedom, Passion & Boldness”, a rainbow of colours was selected to represent a range of emotions. The arrangement of the colours from warm to cool directs people from the north to the south of the space and creates a sense of vitality and dynamism.

Paul & Shark Hong Kong Flagship Store Location Hong Kong, China Size 3,500ft­2 | 325m2 Status Completed in 2013 Client Paul & Shark

Spread across 3,500 ft2, the PAUL & SHARK Asian flagship store took inspirations from the Milan headquarters, combining classic Italian elegance with modern elements such as steel, wood and customized furniture. The orchestration of glass, steel, lighting and space helps portray the true essence of the PAUL & SHARK lifestyle for an extraordinary shopping experience. Shimmery as glittering

ripples, the facade decorated in indigo aluminum sheet patchwork evokes the sensation of sailing over foamy waves. Its undulating surface reflects the iridescent interplay of light and shadow which characterizes the exuberant cityscape of Canton Road. The main entrance and windows are decorated by vertical blinds of wood and steel, with a LED screen showcasing the latest collection of the brand.

Paul & Shark Retail Shop, HCMC Interior Design Location HCMC, Vietnam Size 100m2 Status Completed in 2014 Client Paul & Shark

Our brief was to inject the DNA of the Paul & Shark brand into the Asia stores, while making it applicable to the Asian market and customer. In order to fully understand the inner workings of Paul & Shark, our team travelled to Milan and Varese to tour their stores and workshops to personally witness the attention to detail and spirit of innovation the brand represents.

B+H worked closely with Paul & Shark CEO, Mr Andrea Dini to create a contemporary expression of the Milan store design, updating it with elements such as steel, wood and specially designed furniture. Our holistic approach to design was about enhancing the customer experience while transcending the spirit of Paul & Shark in glass, steel, light and space.

Nike Nanjing East Road Location Shanghai, China Size 16,790ft2 | 1,560m2 Status Completed in 2008 Client Nike

Located along the famous Nanjing Middle Road pedestrian strip, this store was created by fully renovating a 5-storey building which was more than 90 years old. The structure originally consisted of loading bearing masonry walls and timber flooring. A new structural steel frame was installed inside and new floors were built. B+H provided full interior design consultancy services and participated in the structural re-design work to ensure the interior environment was not adversely affected.

Space planning work included applying Nike standards and ensuring the exact mixture and amounts of merchandise and product lines were included. B+H was responsible for the interior design, while the facade was designed in association with Shanghai Dongya Lian He Architectural Design Co. Ltd.

Nike Chengdu Retail Shop Interior Design Location Sichuan, China Size 1,400m2 Status Completed in 2008 Client Nike

Located on the west section of Chunxi Road – the retail pedestrian street of Chengdu, Nike Chengdu Shop is on GF and 2F of a sports products city. We maximized the vertical portion of the shop entry and highlighted the logo of Nike against the white baked finish background. By combining the product showcases along the long glass shop windows in 2F, our design satisfied the client’s expectation to reflect the image of Nike

Chengdu Retail Shop far beyond the store proper. The internal space is wide, open and bright. The customers can observe the panorama of the shop through the presentation platform on GF and the winding internal stair. On 2F, large posters, LED TV and exhibition panels were combined to create the visual focus, which enriches the spatial levels as well as defines the areas of different products.

Canucks Flagship Store Location: Vancouver, Canada Size 1,819ft2 | 169m2 Status Completed in 2011 Client Aquilini Development

The design of the new Canucks Flagship Store focused on a ‘centre ice’ floor treatment, walls clad in team colours and glowing light boxes in Canuck blue. While you peruse, catch a few game highlights on the big screen from the genuine arena seating. Located in Vancouver’s popular shopping district of Robson Street, the Canucks Flagship Store is the newest of three locations in Vancouver to purchase authentic Canucks merchandise.

Mountain Equipment Co-op North Vancouver Store Location North Vancouver, Canada Size 11,839ft2 | 1,010m2 Status Completed in 2005 Client Mountain Equipment Co-op

Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) in North Vancouver is the result of an extensive interior and exterior retrofit of an existing one storey building plus mezzanine. In keeping with MEC’s philosophy, the remodeled facility was designed with sustainability in mind at every stage. A skylight allows daylight to penetrate the retail area while a tank installed on the roof collects fresh rainwater for use in the toilets, thereby reducing water consumption.

MEC products allow the user to wander as effortlessly as possible through the outdoors, allowing them time to focus on nature and not troublesome pieces of outdoor equipment. The interior fit out of the MEC store offers the shopper an equally practical experience. Retail display, signage, and cash functions are conveniently located and readily exhibited in a casual yet efficient manner, so that shoppers can easily find the items they need and move on to their next outdoor adventure.

Hertz On and Off Airport Locations Location Multiple Size various Status Completed in 2013 Client Hertz Corporation Inc. In collaboration with Jackman Reinvents Inc.

In collaboration with branding agency Jackman Reinvents B+H redesigned three of Hertz’s airport locations and 15 of its off-airport locations. These 18 initial designs have since served as models for additional refreshed Hertz locations worldwide. As the culmination of a full Hertz rebranding exercise by Jackman Reinvents, Hertz’s new rental facilities needed to reflect the company’s revamped identity and deliver on the promise of a streamlined approach to car rental. Each location’s architecture, fixtures, finishes and signage work together to carry the new Hertz brand into the physical realm and define a consistent, recognizable environment that boosts Hertz’s presence in the market.

By abolishing rental counters, the new facilities reshape customer interaction and flow to dramatically improve the rental experience. Self-service kiosk areas help to alleviate high volumes of customers quickly, while customers who do have to wait are given a pager that lets them know when a kiosk or agent is available. Members now have access to lounges, receive priority service on airport shuttle buses and get to choose from more upgrade options when selecting their vehicle. Each rental facility incorporates sustainable design methods, including strategies to achieve LEED® certification.

Secret Location Location Vancouver, Canada Size 10,000ft 2 | 930m2 Status Completed in 2012 Client Carey Melnichuk

A European concept store comprised of a clothing boutique and a tapas style restaurant. CHIL assisted the client in developing the Modern Baroque aesthetic she imagined by translating that vision into complex millwork features and bespoke display units. Bold faceted walls meld perfectly with a larger than life fireplace and an embellished crown-molding bar with

a lit top. This project was customized down to the last detail and includes many exciting technological features such as a Twitter mirror, a custom LED colour changing countertop and a video installation fire. Located in Gastown, this project has pushed the boundaries of the Vancouver shopping experience.

The Market by Longo’s at Brookfield Place Location Toronto, Canada Size 4,500ft 2 | 420m2 Status Completed in 2006 Brookfield Place | 2009 - 111 Elizabeth Street | In Progress - Hudson Bay Centre Client Longo Brothers Fruit Markets Inc.

These urban format stores cater to the special needs of downtown office workers who require convenience both for quickly picking items to eat during the day and purchasing items to take home to make a meal. They efficiently serve the rush of customers within a sophisticated environment incorporating stone, wood, metal and glass elements. The 111 Elizabeth Street location opened in June 2009 while work

on a store at the Hudson Bay Centre is underway. For all these projects, B+H was the Architect of Record, providing design coordination and contact administration, and Watt International was the Design Consultant. The Brookfield Place store (pictured below) won the Grand Prize in the 2007 NASFM Retail Design Award’s Grocery Stores category.

Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver and connected to the Shangri-La luxury hotel, Urban Fare Alberni provides a unique shopping experience. CHIL designed this boutique grocery store with the

brand’s vision of providing world-class gourmet food in a sophisticated market environment. CHIL’s use of natural materials, motifs and characteristic details contributes to making this vision reality.

Amorino Ice Cream Outlets, Shanghai Location Shanghai, China Status Completed between 2006 to 2007 Client Amorino

Amorino is a world famous Franco-Italian Gelato brand, with more than 100 franchises in 70 cities. B+H delivered 3 outlets in Shanghai between 2006 and 2007 (approximatively 50 sqm each). The scope of work includes design based on the brand guidelines, working drawings, furniture and kitchen equipment procurement and, supervision on site. For each outlet, there is an open laboratory visible from outside, where the ice creams are made daily.

Stratus Bar and Restaurant at the Toronto Athletic Club (Renovation) Location Toronto, Canada Size 2,400ft2 | 220m2 Client Cambridge Group of Clubs Status Completed in 2013

The Toronto Athletic Club occupies three of the top floors in a Toronto-Dominion Centre tower. Stratus, the bar and restaurant of the ‘Club Above’ in the heart of the Financial District, needed a renovation that would transform a dated, unmemorable interior into a destination befitting the iconic modernity of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Toronto-Dominion Centre architecture. The desired ambience was elegant yet relaxed: the space would be rented out for events such as weddings, but at the same time the club’s owners wanted members to put on casual clothes after a workout and feel comfortable dining there. The owners also sought a design that would make it possible to hold multiple concurrent events. In less than 3,000 square feet, the design team created a versatile sequence of varied yet aesthetically unified zones. From the elevator, a spectacular view to the

exterior opens up through the central bar area, while lattice-like bronze metal screens with mirrors inserted into them layer a veiling of privacy over seating areas on either sides of the space. A 90-degree turn leads into the dining area, which can be subdivided into two rooms and/or closed off from the bar by pivoting doors. A 10-seat private dining room partially enclosed by curving, bottle-lined glass screens adds to the range of spaces. Prior to the renovation, Stratus was a members-only venue serving breakfast, lunch and early dinners. Now open to the public, and open later in the evening, its revenue has doubled.

Four Seasons Gresham Palace Budapest, Hungary Location Budapest, Hungary Size 275,000ft 2 | 25,550m2 Status Completed in 2004 Client Gresco Rt.

Services: Reconstructing the old structure, a three-storey underground parking garage, and the addition of an upper guest room floor and rooftop spa. Formanyelv was also responsible for the spa interiors and architecture. Accreditation: Previous experience of Patrick Fejér while at Formanyelv. Interior design for the rest of the project was provided by Richmond International

This hotel was designed by Patrick Fejér, founder and principal of Formanyelv, now a Partner at B+H. He oversaw the conversion of a turn of the century Art Nouveau Palace into a luxury hotel, which was featured in Condé Nast Magazine and won Best New Hotel in Europe and was ranked #1 Hotel in Budapest. The project involved reconstructing the old structure, a three-storey underground parking garage, and the addition of an upper guest room floor and rooftop spa. Interior design for the rest of the project was provided by Richmond International.

The diverse palette of new and original materials ranged from gold mosaic to bronze structural fittings. As a true collaborator, Mr. Fejér was able to navigate the project team through to its execution including local and UNESCO approval process, the coordination of both local and International Engineers and Consultants, along with the Construction Administration of Belgian and French General Construction Companies.

Arc Restaurant at the Fairmont Waterfront Location Vancouver, Canada Status Completed in 2014 Client Westmont Hospitality Group & Ocean Pacific Hotel Group

Located in the Fairmont Waterfront, the redesign design of this restaurant focused primarily on creating a new and engaging lounge with a more centralized bar encouraging a relaxed and entertaining area separate from the remaining dining spaces. In addition to the new bar and lounge area, a feature chef’s table serves dual purpose as a breakfast buffet. New banquette seating was added to provide more intimate niches along with a new private dining room intended as a multi-purpose room used for both meetings as well as private parties. In order to define this space separately from the more typical hotel restaurant, bold material choices were selected giving a very warm, comfortable

and contemporary look. Rich charcoals, hazy grays and mauves with accents of bronze and gold tones helped create a more moody atmosphere. The West coast feel is also felt in the choice of furniture design which is both comfortable and classic providing varying options for guests and customers. The large volumous space and accentuated arc in the floor plan provided many challenges that were resolved through dramatic lighting, dark tones and an overall rezoning of functions. As a result, this new restaurant was transformed to compliment the celebrated new menu and to offer a new distinctive dining experience for Vancouverites and visiting guests.

Westin Whistler Resort Grill & Vine Restaurant Location Vancouver, Canada Status Completed in 2013 Client O’Neill Hotels & Resorts

As part of the well-known Westin Whistler Resort, this renovation of a popular restaurant complements Westin’s core brand values, supports wellness and focuses on locally sourced items. This approachable and relaxed space is a modernized reinterpretation of the classic bar and grill designed in a signature bistro style. Along with the full restaurant, B+H CHIL Design incorporated a grab-and-go coffee

station, a new pizza oven and a buffet area, as well as an Enomatic wine system. The Grill and Vine restaurant continues to be a popular destination for après-ski drinks, casual lunches, and dinners.

The Livat Wuxi Shopping Centre is located in the Xishan district of Wuxi city. With the construction of super structure now complete, there are three main blocks in the IICC Wuxi project: a hypermarket (including cinema), shopping center and mall with the Ikea Bluebox Store as one anchor. The project is positioned as a unique waterfront recreational tourism attraction along the Huangpu River in Shanghai. The development itself contains office facilities in two towers within a complex of buildings containing cultural, exposition, entertainment and retail services.

A comprehensive waterfront landscape design includes rooftop gardens, ribbon-like tree groves and boardwalks. The theme of ‘fishing and Shanghai culture’ have been utilized in the design concept for the overall development.

Located in Dalian, Tiger Beach ocean Park is a modern ocean theme park that exemplifies the ocean culture of dalian and combines retail, sightseeing, amusement, scientific, residential, marina, and cultural amenities. This project is a special extension of the Park on its eastern edge. designed in the manner of a north American seaside village, the wharf’s key

objective is to be dalian’s primary seafood dining destination, in addition to providing entertainment and retail. The wharf, together with the existing laohutan Scenic zone and seaside roads, forms a comprehensive theme business zone. This project received the 2008 dubai international award for Best Practice to improve the living Condition (China).

This program proposes a vibrant city centre for the citizens to enjoy the waterfront. The multi-functional site for the Luting Recreation Plaza provides a vibrant community and experience for public interaction at the commercial area and unique neighbourhoods for residents. The retail area takes advantage of the

pedestrian’s only podium to create intimate spaces between low rise buildings with courtyards and terraces overlooking the major street below and water features on site. Amenities include parking, markets at the waterfront, park spaces, and a variety of residential types including towers, mid-rises and townhouses.

Nantong Incity is a Lifestyle Experiencing Mixeduse Complex consisting of shopping mall, service apartments and SOHO office buildings. The 100m tall high-rise office building at the north-east corner of the site contrasts with the old town area of Nantong. Taking the advantages of the natural scenery along the river

and the comfortable livable environment, the service apartments are arranged on the south side. The main part of the 5 storeys of the shopping mall connects with the office tower as a whole. Four independent small scale retail components on the west side of the mall are the finishing touch of the whole project.

Changzhou Care City is proposed to be a Lifestyle Experiencing Mixed-use Development including retail, entertainment, F&B and residential functions. The staggered retail facility is 4-5 storey high. The elevated atrium inside the retail space from the basement to the top floor brings in abundant natural lighting to

the interiors, giving energy and motions to the whole shopping mall. The residential buildings are in conformity but with slight variations. The super large intervals between each buildings ensures the high quality of the living environment by protecting the visual sight of each unit from being interfered.

The objective of the master plan for this project was to create a modern and contemporary mixed-use complex that would transform the constricted urban site into multi-layered, highly efficient and attractive development. The location of the site between an elevated highway and railway line resulted in a very linear approach to functional organization of the

building as well as its formal architectural expression. It accommodates a mixed-use functional approach incorporating all required urban living amenities such as a supermarket, shopping mall, subway connection, offices, service apartments and leisure activities.

First Canadian Place Interior Renewal Location Toronto, Canada Size 200,000ft 2 | 18,580m2 Status Completed in 2011 Client Brookfield Properties

The interior renewal of Canada’s tallest office building features updated common areas, including lobby staircases redesigned lighter in scale, fritted glass, brushed metal finishes on railings, ceiling accents, and natural stone flooring. The office lobbies and central water feature were also renovated to provide overall integration within the complex.

A unique water feature brings tranquility to the new common areas. The Market Place has been completely transformed - with Longo’s as the newest food anchor. This project involved approximately 200,000 square feet of space. B+H was also involved with the total exterior recladding of the building and infrastructure upgrades.

With an average of 800,000 visitors a week, the Toronto Eaton Centre continues to be one of Canada’s leading tourist attractions. Covering an entire city block, the Eaton Centre features the dramatic 900-foot long, five-level shopping galleria which contains over 300 stores. The first two phases of the development also included two office towers, the 27-storey Dundas Tower and 35-storey Cadillac Fairview Tower. B+H were joint venture architects with Zeidler Roberts Partnership/Architects for the Retail Galleria, Cadillac Fairview Tower and One Dundas Street West Tower. This project received the 2008 Landmark Award from the Ontario Association of

Architects, City of Toronto Urban Design Award in 1992, Urban Land Institute Award of Excellence in 1983, and Governor General’s Medal for Architecture in 1982.

Located on a 200-acre site, this 1.2 million square foot enclosed shopping, leisure and entertainment destination opened in November 2004 and will ultimately feature 16 anchor tenants and more than 200 specialty stores, restaurants and entertainment venues. Vaughan Mills is divided into six unique neighborhoods based on the design theme of “Discover Ontario.” B+H was the Project Architect for this major

development which is one of the largest shopping and entertainment centres in the region. The estimated total project cost for this development is $355 million.

Bow Valley Square Renovation Location Calgary, Canada Size 61,000ft 2 | 5,700m2 Status Completed in 2012 Client Oxford Properties Group LEED Canada-CI Gold certified B+H worked in association with BKDI Architects.

Located in Calgary’s downtown core, Bow Valley Square is a four-tower complex that houses office and retail space and is a busy hub for pedestrians. It was built in phases between 1972 and 1981, and was in need of a revitalization. B+H Architects were responsible for the interior transformation, helping to redefine this premiere downtown location. The exterior façade has been redesigned while the two retail levels were renovated and upgraded with new store front criteria and graphic design throughout. The project also includes creating new entry sequences for the east and west entrances,

to allow more natural light in and to make the space more welcoming as people travel into the complex and through it.

The Rideau Centre Expansion and Renewal is an ambitious project to expand the existing Rideau Centre shopping centre in the heart of Ottawa. The expansion provides for four new levels of retail as well as three levels of underground parking. Accompanying the expansion is a complete replacement of the existing centre’s façade. A new street presence and level of interaction with the public is accomplished through generous glazing at grade and direct entrances

from the street. The Rideau Centre is already one of Ottawa’s main bus transit hubs, and after 2016 it will also incorporate a new Light Rail Transit station, complete with direct connections between the centre and the station. The Expansion is being designed to LEED® Certified Core and Shell. B+H is the Architect of Record and design collaborator; BBB Architects were responsible for the Façade Concept Design.
