Hospitality Planning and Landscape: setting the stage for a world-class luxury resort destination

20

St. Kitts Marriott Resort and the Royal Beach Casino Landscape Location  Frigate Bay, St. Kitts & Nevis Size  12 Ha Status  Completed in 2008 Client  Marriott Hotels & Resorts

A 393 guest room vacation hotel sitting on a 12-hectare beachfront facing the Caribbean Sea, the project consists of the main building and 19 other garden building clusters. Landscape amenities include a scale model of the historical Niña Ship from Christopher Columbus, an event plaza with a performance stage, a 70m central recreation pool with

walk-in beach edge, submersed seating, spa pools, and double level pool bar, 2 informal pools with spa within the major garden courts, feature gardens with rock cascade fountain, private event pavilions and a large selection of plant species to create a rich tropical outdoor experience.

21

22

Accor Pullman Phu Quoc Resort Location  Kien Giang Province, Vietnam Size  6.7 Ha Status  Under Construction Client  Milton Vietnam JSC

The new Pullman Resort will be a high-quality addition to the selection of beachfront resorts on Phu Quoc Island. The site for the resort is long and narrow with over 400 metres between the main arrival point and the beach. The main hotel with its conference facility and spa is located in the front part of the site, defining an attractive entrance garden and arrival courtyard between the main gate and the hotel lobby entrance. The landscape concept is based on the idea of creating “islands” of activity spread along the length of the site, linked by a primary pedestrian route that connects all of the different amenities. In keeping with the Pullman’s design branding, the resort offers something for everyone in the family from children’s water play area, to the large central

pool and bar, to sculpture gardens and private walks for quiet contemplation. The islands create separate zones of activity with the elevated pool deck in the centre of the site and quieter gardens and courtyards running through the garden villa zone with its private pools, creating a buffer against the publicly accessible areas along the beachfront and the beachfront promenade. The landscape is colourful and playful, with curves and shapes in keeping with the contemporary architecture of the site. Whether viewed from above in the upper floors of the hotel or experienced on the ground, the landscape makes a great contribution to the quality and the holiday character of the resort experience.

23

24

Doha City Centre Landscape Location  Doha, Qatar Size  37 Ha Status  Completed in 2010

The Doha City Centre project involves the development of five new hotel and serviced apartment towers flanking either end of one of the largest existing retail developments in the region. The towers are based in luxuriously landscaped podiums incorporating the kind of high-quality amenity spaces expected of world-class hotel operators including Marriott, Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts, and Rotana Hotels. The landscaped podiums are

designed with strong internal and external connections creating a responsive relationship to the unique character of each individual hotel tower and each operator’s needs. The podium roof gardens are designed with flexibility to allow for the creation of small outdoor rooms containing a mix of both formal and informal spaces and to provide a beautiful focal point for overlook from hotel suites.

25

26

Hoi An Marriott Resort & Spa Location  Quang Nam Province, Vietnam Size  3.3 Ha Status Design-in-Progress Client  Phat Dat Real Estate Development Corporation

The new Marriott Resort & Spa in Hoi An is the latest addition to the growing list of 5-star resorts in this popular waterfront destination. The cityside frontage of the resort has a relatively small setback from the road and is characterized by a beautifully detailed entry and drop-off courtyard featuring colourful flowering trees and fine stone paving and detailing. The entry landscape incorporates a lantern garden in keeping with the historic identity of Hoi An, that gives a distinctive character to those arriving at the resort at different times of the day and evening. The real amenity and landscape focus in the resort is on the beachside. The three extending arms of the hotel building define two distinct landscape zones. On the north in front of the main lobby, there is a formal garden with an allee of trees which will serve as a venue for special events and

outdoor gatherings. On the south side, there is a quiet adult pool area which links at grade level to the spa. In front of the hotel building, extending to the beach is the primary recreational and amenity zone for the hotel. This area includes a large swimming pool with an infinity edge overlooking the beach. Because the actual public beachfront is fairly narrow across the western side of the site, the landscape design incorporates large sand covered “beach” zones which extend and connect into the site, creating a perception of a larger beach area, and creating locations for beachfront dining, sunbathing, special events and beachfront recreation within the private realm of the site.

27

28

King’s Harbour Integrated Resort Location  Sihanoukville, Cambodia Size  7 Ha Status  Completed in June 2015 Client  JSM Indochina

Tourism development in Western Sihanoukville, Cambodia, is setting high international standards for inclusive ecofriendly travel. The detailed master plan of the Victory Beach Integrated Resort advances the region’s mixed-use collection of hospitality, commercial and retail programs that feature beachfront hotel resorts and entertainment complexes. Linking the development, waterfront boulevards and boardwalks enhance access and inclusivity between beachfront and inland hotels. They also connect local and tourist communities in off and nearshore amenities as well as parks and beaches dotted with retail, entertainment, and a traditional marketplace featuring Cambodia’s unique

character. The Victory Beach Zone also ties the development together and offers an extraordinary opportunity for recreation and relaxation. Enhanced and extended with imported sand and protected by a submerged geotube breakwater, the inland side of the sandy beach boasts 15 to 20 m of boardwalk promenade and a variety of active and passive beach-related activities. The boardwalk is the detailed master plan’s continuous path of connection along the Victory Beach Integrated Resort. It brings people and amenities together on a shoreline development that raises the level of eco-tourism expectation.

29

30

DoubleTree by Hilton Ha Long Bay Hotel & Condotel Location  Bai Chay Ward, Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam Size  17,329 m2 Status  Under Construction Client  Tri Duc Hotel JSC

Forming a seascape of limestone pillars along the northeast coast of Vietnam, Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our architecture, and planning and landscape teams worked collaboratively to design this two-tower development including hotel and residential suites complete with retail space, a casino, conference amenities, and complementary landscape design. Built on an existing hill fronting the Ha Long Bay, this DoubleTree By Hilton development is tucked into the landform creating a strong sense of place and reflecting the natural beauty of the surrounding land and foothills. Thoughtful incorporation of terracing and banding throughout the landscape design interprets the local contours of the terra and is reminiscent

of local rice paddy fields. The natural and memorable flow patterns and organic forms throughout the landscape design connect the site to the mountainous region directly to the north and work as a clever wayfinding tactic. The elevated terracing and natural sloping of the site lead guests progressively to their arrival at the entry and guide them along their subsequent travels through the resort. Terraced promenades also work to connect the resort to its surrounding context by acting as easy connections to public amenities situated across the street. Furthering the feeling of connection on the site is the main pool that is extended along the length of the resort featuring an engaging edge that links to the activity at the podium.

Cam Ranh Villas Location  Khanh Hoa, Vietnam Size  26 Ha Status  Completed in 2013 Client Mesa

Cam Ranh Villas is one of two significant projects completed for the client, who has recently expanded into the land development business. The resort villa project is located on the Cam Ranh peninsula, just south of Nha Trang on the south-central Vietnamese coast. The client was looking for an exceptional and unconventional design, incorporating a smaller lot format and featuring a rich and varied public realm strategy. The concept features an organic and relaxed layout, with a distribution of open space

to envelop discreet neighborhoods. A central open space spine and numerous landscape and road linkages provide a community connection to the beach. The retained natural hill invokes the sand dune topography typical of the area and sets up spectacular ocean views for the high-end villas. A Community Club with extensive water-based recreation provides a central place for the community away from the beach. A 4-star resort hotel, a regional retail center and condominium apartment complete the program.

consistent development. The programme included 100 chalets on terraces, clustered around pools and gardens, and 40 overwater bungalows accessible by a platform built out of the shore rocks and beach. Lusail Thai Island Resort Master Plan Location  Lusail, Qatar Status  2,902,940 ft2 | 269,692 m2 Status  Completed in 2015 Client  IDCC Doha, Qatar

The design for the Lusail Thai Island, as a fusion between the two cultures, draws its inspiration from the rich and vibrant Thai culture and blissful nature, blended with the very essence of Qatar traditional hospitality. Comprised of 200 rooms, 100 private chalets and bungalows, and public amenities, this landmark project incorporates different types of luxury resort facilities within the beauty of the island’s natural topography. Working closely with the client, B+H Planning and Landscape explored the ways in which the resort could best respond to the needs of guests to provide the level of shelter, privacy, and luxury expected. The resort’s landscape design complements its architecture and revolves around the use of xeriscape, making it ideal for the local arid climate and blending seamlessly with the context of the surrounding land. Through thoughtful planning, landscape, and built form, we employed a

holistic approach to creating an elegant, sustainable, and functionally organized solution. To accommodate the number of guest accommodations required, all services are tucked under the raised level of the central island, leaving the grounds free for the guesthouse amenities and gardens. This design creates a cascading Laguna that meanders through the site and along with garden pathways, links the central island amenities with the beach chalets and water bungalow clusters. Inspired by Islamic interior courtyards, elements include terraces for gathering and function as connections between buildings. Echoing local design principles, spaces feature garden areas, formal water features and palm roofs as peaceful retreats. Garden pathways also connect the resort and allow guests to wander with a sense of mindful connection to the island topography.
