ABOUT ISKCON

Founder Acarya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was founded by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (Shrila Prabhupada) in the West in 1966. ISKCON belongs to Gaudiya (refers to Bengal) Vaishnavism, a devotional tradition based on the teachings of Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. The precepts and practices of ISKCON were taught and codified by the 15th century saint and religious reformer Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486-1532), his brother Nityananda Prabhu and six of his principle associates, the Goswamis of Vrindavana (Sanatana, Rupa, Jiva, Gopal Bhatta, Raghunatha Dasa and Raghunatha Bhatta. The Bhagavad-gita was first put into writing about 5000 years ago. The Gita is the principal scripture of The Hare Krishna Movement™ Organization. Its origins are more than 5000-yearsold. The aim of ISKCON is to acquaint all people of world with universal principles of self-realization and God consciousness so that they may derive the highest benefit of spiritual understanding, unity and peace. The Vedic literature recommend that in the present age of Kali-yuga the most effective means of achieving self-realization is always hear about, glorify, and remember the allattractive Supreme Lord Sri Krishna. Therefore, it recommends the chanting of the Holy Names: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. This sublime chanting puts the chanter directly in touch with the Supreme Lord through the sound vibration of His Holy Name. ISKCON follows the teachings of the Vedas and Vedic scriptures, including the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam which teach Vaishnavism or devotion to God (Krishna) in His Supreme Personal aspect of Sri Sri Radha Krishna. These teachings are received through the preceptorial line known as the Brahma-Madhav-Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya. ISKCON is part of the disciplic succession which started with Lord Krishna Himself and continued with Srila Vyasadeva, Srila Madhavacharya, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and in the present day His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and his followers. ISKCON’s teachings are non-sectarian, following the principle of sanatana dharma or eternal religion, which denotes the eternal activity of all living beings – loving devotional service (bhakti-yoga) to Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Thane ISKCON activities : Children Programmes Gopal’s Funschool

Gopal’s Fun school (GFS) is a once a week training program which facilitates your child’s personality development , character building, growth in spiritual and ethical values through story telling , mantra meditation, devotional music and Sanskrit Sloka recitation. GFS aims to implement the vision of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder acharya of ISKCON, of providing systematic spiritual education to children, so they may become intelligent and responsible leaders of the family, the country and the world in the future.

Why does my child need GFS?

Shloka RecitationModern society has started discovering that human beings have not just physical needs, but also emotional and spiritual needs. In the western countries, parents have provided bundantly for the material needs of their children. Yet despite their best efforts, most parents are baffled and pained to see their children succumb to stress, depression, addiction, violence, delinquent behavior and even suicide. Even if the children survive such unfortunate influences, when they grow up, often they have little respect for their parents and elders and they disregard ethical, moral and spiritual values that their parents cherish. With western culture and technology rapidly invading our lives through TV, Internet and other media, our children are becoming increasingly vulnerable to these harmful influences. Numerous surveys have confirmed that a child without a spiritual basis to his life easily falls prey to bad habits. A spiritually trained and guided child, on the other hand, is well equipped to counter harmful influences and confidently face the stresses and tensions of modern life. Therefore, GOPAL’S FUNSCHOOL aims to help responsible parents in raising their children by

offering systematic and scientific training in spiritual culture and Wisdom.

What will my child learn at GFS?

GFS trains children in character building, personality development, ethical and spiritual values, mantra meditation, story-telling, devotional music and Sanskrit Shloka recitation. Reshma, mother of Raina Sadarangani, says, “In today’s challenging world where there is so much materialism even inschools, it is necessary that the child be also exposed to things which balance this materialism like our religion, our culture and the right values. If she keeps coming, I am sure it will change her personality. The way things are going on in this world, she will have to face adversities in later life and this training will make her a balanced individual.” Teachers of Funschool Chandrashekhar Rane, father of Atharva says, “He is a very shy person, he does not mix so much with other children. But for the first time I saw that after coming here, he is interested to come here frequently. And he used to plan a day in advance that he has to do painting tomorrow. He wants to come for the next camp also in the holidays. He has improved his communication skills and has gained confidence especially in his paintings.” Umashankar Pathak sharing his experiences, says, “After joining GOPAL’S FUNSKOOL I saw a lot of improvements in my children in their habits, manners, co-operation with each other. My second son was very naughty; he always used to fight with his elder brother. After attending GOPAL’S FUNSKOOL he has become so calm and cool and sober. The elder son now also prays regularly.” Bina Naik mother of Maithili Naik adds, “They learn to share. In schools there is stress only on studies; here there is inculcation of good values and culture.”

Modern youth is extremely smart, intelligent and dynamic. With a combination on dynamism and spiritual character one can harness ones ultimate potential and be a great asset to the whole society. Keeping this in mind we have weekly sessions, especially tailored for the Youth, so that they can understand the whole logic and rationality behind the need for spirituality. A very dynamic yet sober youth group caters to the services. We conduct weekly such sessions at various places. Apart from the various workshops, the boys have a wonderful outing to some of the holy places in India where they get a first hand experience of spirituality.

Self Excellence Skills Workshop:

Devotees enjoy sankirtan & FeastYatra to NaimisaranyaUnder constant compulsion to perform in academics, sports and various competitions, students need a support system to sustain and enrich their lives. Self Excellence Skills workshops help to motivate them to be mentally strong, and confidently face the stress and pressures of modern life. Ganesh Ramakrishnan, a PhD scholar in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at IIT Mumbai believes “India has got a very rich Vedic heritage and therefore it is the responsibility of every Indian to first understand and apply the Vedic wisdom in their own lives and then distribute it to the entire world. This can change the whole world and bring peace and unity.” Dr. Suraj Purushottam, M.D. General Medicine and Chief Resident, J.J.Hospital, Mumbai says, “I realized that only material qualification and education, in the long run

ends up in frustration and creates a big void which is experienced by most people in the world today. I see this happening around me all the time. So after understanding the limitations of such a lifestyle, I started to find out solutions for the same.” According to Om Prakash Pandey, Nainital who is working in Marine Diesels & Gas Turbines Division of Naval Dockyard “After seeing the positive benefits, my conviction and good performance at my job, my colleagues conceptually accepted the process and have agreed to follow it one day. Some of them have even started attending this monthly youth festival.” Gaur Gopal Das, head of ISKCON Youth Services says, “As we need physical exercise to keep our body fit, we need certain exercises to keep our mind and soul free from modern-day maladies like stress, anxiety, fear etc. There is a need to understand, to lend our ears and a helping hand to the confused student.”

YATRAS:

On the banks of Keshi Ghat, Visit to Radha Govind TempleThe devotees of Thane had been for 2 spiritual retreats. Firstly, had been to a 4 day spiritual camp at Pune, where they interacted amongst themselves in a more closer way, understanding each other and the whole process of spirituality.
