Evka 3 Subway Station and Subway Stations in İzmir Scale

Evka 3 Tranportation Station and Bus Route in İzmir Scale

LOCATION Located in the Erzene Quarter of the Bornova District of İzmir, the project area forms the transition point between the historic city center and the northern and eastern neighborhoods of Bornova. The fact that the project area is at the point where Istanbul and Ankara motorways are connected to İzmir allows the visitors coming from outside the city to leave their vehicles and to be included in the urban circulation by public transport. Located at the south of the land, Ege University attracts students and staff to the transfer station to be included in the city. To the west, the historic city center is focused on recreation, entertainment, commercial and official use. Therefore, it is the most extensively used area of Bornova. In the north of the area, there are residential buildings and Doctor Cavit Özyeğin Elementary School, and through the streets 116 / 19-116 / 11, they are connected to the socio-cultural centers and student dormitories that are planned to be built in the future. The existing subway station provides quick and easy access to this area, even from the furthest point of the city. The central stops of the buses are located at the same point as the subway and the subway network and the bus network together ensure the continuity of circulation. Although it is located on the perimeter of the city, it is possible to easily access the project area from any point of İzmir and intercity highways with the transportation network established. The Ege University Lodging along Cengiz Han Avenue restricts access between the project land and the city center and forms a boundary between the river bed that continues on the northsouth axis of the Istanbul and Ankara motorways. The use of open space is very important in social life in Bornova, just like everywhere else in İzmir with a Mediterranean climate.

used as a bazaar today. The area in front of the Government House is the Bornova Center where the official and commercial relations are concentrated. The entertainment and social center Küçük Park and the recreation area Büyük Park are the other focal points of the city. The intensive use of these areas, which constitute the attraction points of the district, brings with it urban problems. Between the developing new settlements and Bornova Historical Center, the project area serves as the intersection and transition point. The Evka-3 Transfer Station, which is used by thousands of users every day, has the opportunity to become a socializing area for the citizens, where they can give short-term or longterm breaks to their daily routine. Social Life Center, which will be developed within the framework of Transfer Center in order to develop a viable healthy environment, should provide a new square to the city which meets this tension. This square should be capable of enabling social activities that can break people’s daily home - work (school) - home routines.

URBAN CONTEXT In the 17th century with the arrival of the merchants Bornova began to develop. Inherited from these periods, Arasta is still BURAK GÜRTUNCA

SUMMARY Evka 3 Transfer Station, which is the project land, is an important part of the daily routine of people not only for Bornova district but for the whole Izmir scale. It is designed as a meeting point where people can take a break from home to work - school to home routine and breathe with social opportunities.

MAIN DESIGN DECISIONS Building a new urban attraction point where people can take a short-term or long-term break from their daily home-workhome or home-school-home routine Creating a new transportation model which is safier and more comfortable for pedestrians Forgathering of the passengers at the piazza for doing the shopping and passing through Designing the metro exits and bus stops in the same elevation, constructing the elevation of the piazza at -6.00 Constructing socio-cultural life on the ground floor Integrating passengers to the piazza by using the circulated bus line around the open bazaar Designing taxi and minibus stations on the transportation level Providing continuity of existing urban approach axles Providing continuity and linking of the existing park by adding to the construction Providing a pass-over on the river to encourage the use of the transfer station for the passenger waiting for an intercity ride.

BURAK GĂœRTUNCA

Since the main approach axis of the land is in the north-south direction, the main entrances were designed in this direction. Due to the intensity of approach from the south, +47.00 elevation was determined as ground floor (0.00). The green texture coming from +5.00 elevation was built on the creek and continued on the floor and roof of the project. The existing park thus formed the recreation areas by merging the proposal with the project. In order to integrate social facilities with the transfer center within the fiction of the neighbourhood, the functions were solved at the ground (socio-cultural) and -6.00 (piazza) elevations.

The transfer center has been elevated to -6.00 to make the metro entrance from the piazza. Bus circulation was solved on the perimeter of the shops and food and beverage units surrounding the square. Thus, the transfer station passengers have become a part of social life. Taxi and minibus stops are solved on the entrance ramp wall at the transfer level but not included in the bus ring line Food and beverage units and shops are built on the main circulation axes. In this way, the integration of the transfer center and social life has been solved.

Context Merzifon is a settlement unit that has survived from pre-milestone periods to the present day. The city keeps the cultural layers that it has been under the influence of throughout history. The contribution of Taşhan and Bedesten in the center to the preservation of urban culture is undeniable. The important commercial structures of the period made the commercial life at the urban scale universal. The location of the competition land is

the city center, which we can also call the Historical Trade Center, and the Pasha Mosque in this center is adjacent to Taşhan and Bedestene. The fact that the new structure around it is predominantly in the trade legends also creates the possibility of the area being a New Trade Center. The imagination of Merzifon Business and Life Center structure is a contemporary and environmentally sensitive architecture that evaluates its poten-

tials in terms of location, universalises business and sociocultural life. Based on this imagination, we tried to create an example of contemporary architecture by taking Tashan and Bedesten structures, which had realized this transformation in the period, to the main axis. We have established a bond with these two important cultural layers in the cross-sectional plane.

SUMMARY

Photography 1 - Site Plan of Competition Area and Historical Area

Life in the Tashan and Bedesten structures has been a part of the city’s memory from the past to the present. Main sections of the new Trade Center were formed by using the cross sections of these two structures in order to keep track of this memory. In this way, it was tried to provide belonging to the place and the past.

Design

Due to its proximity to the main pedestrian artery (Hal Street) in the district center, the Competition Area is located close to a region where shopping, meeting and dispersing functions are used extensively. The area is located to the south of Cumhuriyet Square in the city center, to the northeast of the historical and touristic Tuz Pazari and to the southwest of the Post Office building. The competition area is surrounded by retail trade areas and residential fabric. At present, it is thought that the İşhanı structure in the area does not meet the changing and developing needs of the district. The New Business and Life Center is envisaged to be a center that can be used by different age groups, accommodating commercial and social activities and enriching its environment. FORM We have blended the sections of these cultural assets, which we see as two different layers from Tashan - Bedest, based on the needs of contemporary life. While the filled surfaces that we created meet the functions of the necessity program, the spaces created by the mass movements on the façade helped the users in the upper floors to reach the green texture. The sun-shading system on the outer wall of the green fabric was also placed on other facades, except for the northern front, in order to receive controlled light indoors. The masses were separated from each other in the cross-sectional plane and natural ventilation method was provided in the volumes.

Ground Floor Organization Graphic

The streets that touch the settlement area in the plan level were taken into consideration in order to create filled surfaces at the ground level of the New Trade Center. In order to establish a relationship between the “Historic Trade Center” and the “New Trade Center,, the limits of circulation were tried to be taken into consideration. In order to provide the living conditions foreseen, the construction type was determined as steel in order to thin the structure in plan and section plane.

Context

Photography 2 - Basmane Train Station - 1920’s

Photography 3 - Konak Pier (Custom Building) - 1900’s

Izmir improved the degree of urbanization after the Frankish merchant came to the city. Konak is the district which is the centre of Izmir and Basmane is accepted main region of Konak from past to today. In 19. Century, the Basmane region became prominent with the harbour trade. With the privileges granted by the Ottoman sultans of the period, the Basmane Station was designed by the architect/engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, who named the Eifell Tower in Paris. Basmane Train Station opened in 1876. The main purpose of the train is to make Izmir a part of the raw material trade in Anatolia. Basmane Train Station has rails located perpendicular to the building. With this feature, it serves as the last stop. Again with the privileges of the Ottoman sultans of the period, the construction of the “Konak Pier Shopping Center” building, which is today’s name, was started. The designer of this building is Alexandre Gustave

Eiffel, too. The building opened in 1890. It was used as a customs building during the period. The raw materials coming from Anatolia by train were sent to Europe by sea through customs. Consequently, Konak Pier was built on the seafront directly opposite Basmane Train Station. In this way, Eiffel designed two different structures the same axis at different time intervals in İzmir Basmane. While the Konak Pier structure was transformed into a shopping centre in the intervening 130 years (2003), the Basmane Train Station continued to function. However, the development of technology has also affected rail systems. High-speed trains have started practice, Turkey has also become widespread and the existing station structure is intended to be re-examined within the scope of this project. Today, although not for the purpose of raw material trade, people from various cities of Anatolia come to Izmir by train.  It is the Basmane Train

Station, which provides access to the city and is also the gateway to İzmir. In this respect, this area still functions. Maintaining this function is important for the historical context. Therefore, I think it is appropriate to call the Eiffel Gate for the newly planned station structure and it should be designed in this context. The main reason for this is the fact that people from various cities of Anatolia meet the two axes of Eiffel when they come to the new Basmane station.

SUMMARY In Izmir – Basmane, There are two important buildings that were designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. Gustave Eiffel’ s name was given to “Eiffel Tower”. These are Basmane Train Station and Konak Pier Mall (was a customs building). They are on the same axis. I created an “Eiffel Gate” for the new contextual approaching for the Basmane Train Station.

BURAK GÜRTUNCA

Basmane is a district that sheds light on the history of İzmir with its historical identity and connects İzmir to Anatolia and the surrounding suburbs from the past to the present through the rail system. In the 1950s, in Turkey, had an immigration wave that began from the east to the west and Basmane district was effected that directly. Basmane, which did not have an urban plan and infrastructure capable of responding to this migration wave at the time, now has slums. Since the

population increase from the 1950s to the present day, the separation of the Basmane district from the urban identity of İzmir has also affected the decrease in its socio-cultural quality. In this context, the Basmane district is both inside and outside the city of İzmir. I think it will be important in this context to dissolve the boundaries created by the railway station. I think that putting the rails underground will benefit

the melting of the social boundaries that have formed over time. A Basmane district, which identifies with its urban identity again, will become a safer and more scaled place. Basmane Station has interacted with many people over time. Through this interaction, we can adapt to it the “memory structure”. Due to the newly designed station structure, I think that the old station building should be re-functional as a museum structure called “Basmane and Eiffel Museum.

Context

LOCATION Mordogan is a region on the Karaburun peninsula of Izmir. Due to the high slope topography, the settlements are fragmented. There are settlements built on the slopes of the small hills and on the seaside. Topographic form, wind, sun and sea directly affect the physical environment in Mordoğan region. The general structure of the Mordoğan population is the indigenous people of İzmir. Although a part of the population resides in summer and winter, it is a small town that hosts local tourists coming from outside of Izmir with its small boutique hotels with summer cottages. Can be defined as a summer resort. The highest temperature during the year is 40 °C and the lowest temperature is -2 °C. THE AIM OF THE PROJECT The project area belongs to a cooperator in Mordoğan. Within the scope of the cooperative, 1000 villas would be built. Some have even been made and life has begun. The desired gas station and shopping center functions are intended to serve these villas, Mordoğan and the surrounding area. IMAGE OF THE IMAGE The project area is located at the entrance of the peninsula. The main artery coming from Izmir city passes directly near the area. On this occasion the area becomes a welcome point. When people who come to Mordoğan take the first step to Mordoğan, they will meet the structure that will be designed in the project area. This creates the possibility that the product will be an image structure over time. (Kevin Lynch, Image Of The City – 1960) It is aimed to contribute to the essence of the region’s memory by emphasizing the most basic image of the town of Mordoğan instead of a product produced with a formal concern. Sea view, which is the most important element that people observe in positioning their houses, workplaces and public buildings, is the most important image of Mordoğan. In this context, a main axle (backbone) was formed, making use of the cliff one end of which is in the public area of the cooperative area and the other end of the cliff to the south of the land. At the same time, it was predicted that this backbone would diversify the project socially and thus contribute to the existence of the functions requested by the cooperative. BURAK GÜRTUNCA

SUMMARY The first building to be seen by those who come to Mordogan because of its entrance is the building to be built here. This will allow the structure to become an image structure over time. This image is intended to be a Mordogan image rather than a formal data. For this reason, a spine has been formed towards the sea view, which is the most basic image of Mordogan.

The functions requested by the cooperative were placed around the spine placed on the North - South axis. There were two sections during this placement. There are cooperative houses to the east of the spine and a ring road to the west. Due to the housing located to the east of the land and the spine, part of the area was requested to have a quieter circulation. In the western part of the road side, circulations likely to be more mobile were placed and reflected in this form. Store units were placed to the east of the spine. In order to expand the spaces of the stores, a mezzanine floor is provided which can be changed form with the condition that the area is fixed according to the usage request. Due to the height limit given by the municipality, the volume of the mezzanine was enlarged by going to the form of a hipped roof in order not to have a low volume. In order to maximize the use of natural light to reduce operating costs and increase sustainability, windows were opened to the north of the hipped roofs. Sunshades designed from 3 meters above ground on the western facades of store structures. The units of small and medium-sized enterprises were located to the west of the main axle, that is to the side of the road. By playing with the heights of these volumes, it was wanted to facilitate the identification and recognition of the spaces. These buildings, which have a flat roof, have been filled with earth on their roofs to reduce the effect of the sun in order to increase operating costs and sustainability. The main reason is increasing air temperatures around the world and the average temperature of MordoÄ&#x;an in summer is 32 °C. In addition, a street intertwined with the landscape was designed for these functions. There is also a public toilet structure on this street. A gas station was placed on the north-west side and a market on the north side. The most important reason why the Market is located in the northernmost part of the land is that it cuts the prevailing wind blowing from the north and makes the open air circulation more comfortable inside. On the other hand, by placing solar panels on the flat roof of the market (1000m2), it was aimed to supply all the electricity of the area with the sun and to use more of it in the cooperative structures. The restaurant structure was placed at the lowest level in the south of the land. The floor material of the square designed in the middle of the area was emphasized by changing the material. Compared to other areas, the square was depicted by using more water elements and a statue. High tall trees were preferred in order not to interrupt the sea view on the main axis, while shorter trees and stunted plants were preferred in the street where small and medium operators were located.
