Metricon back with home win L AST week Metricon was again named Australia’s number one home builder for the third year in a row with the release of the HIA Colorbond Steel Housing Top 100 Report at the 2018 HIA Construction Outlook Breakfast. SEPTEMBER seminar on fruit fly control presented by fruit-fly expert Colin Bain,at the Camp Hill Primary School was a huge success, with up to 80 gardeners learning how to control this destructive pest. Fruit fly are here to stay and the best we can do is learn to manage their numbers according to organiser and enthusiastic gardener Greg Butler, who grew tired of the local school’s vegetable garden being decimated. A community effort is required across Bendigo to help manage fruit fly numbers, Colin told those attending the informative evening. “Overall, the cost and time taken to monitor and maintain traps will be worthwhile,” he said. “It will take time and a joint community effort but we can manage fruit fly numbers.” So, if you have fruit trees or grow vegetables the following hints will help to reduce fruit fly numbers with the use of traps. There are fruit fly traps available for male or female flies

or a unisex trap depending on the bait used. A combination of male and female traps can also be used. Two traps should be adequate for the most backyards, but more can be used. Male traps can be hung directly in fruit trees. Female traps should be positioned away from the fruit trees, high up a north-easterly direction for best results. “Make sure you check your traps regularly and re-bait according to the instructions, through to the end of May,” Colin said.

Hygiene is also essential, collect any fallen or infected fruit and put into a plastic bag, leaving it in the he sun or the freezer to destroy the maggots. After fruit set cover your small fruit trees with a fine mesh netting – available from a local nursery or online. There are also sprays that can be used sparingly, but these should be sourced from an outlet that can provide detailed instructions including relevant safety precautions. Buoyant regional property market L

ATEST data from the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) reveals strong confidence in the regional property market with a record number of building permits issued in the past financial year. The VBA report reinforces Real Estate Industry of Victoria (REIV) records of a buoyant regional property market, which continues to outperform Metropolitan Melbourne. For the second consecutive financial year, the value of building permits

reported in Regional Victoria increased by a higher percentage than Metropolitan Melbourne. Comparatively, REIV data shows median house price growth in Regional Victoria increased four per cent in the June 2018 quarter but dipped by 0.6 per cent in Metropolitan Melbourne. In Victoria overall, the value of building permits for domestic houses increased 14.4 per cent to $19.8 billion comparing the 2016-17 financial year with 2017-18. The growth was

even stronger for apartments with a 22.4 per cent increase to $6.5 billion. The top three municipalities in Regional Victoria by total reported cost of work in 2017-18 were predictably the major three cities of Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo with $1.73 billion, $495 million and $449 million respectively. Next on the list was Surf Coast with $335 million, Bass Coast with $330 million, Baw Baw with $264 million, Mitchell with $250 million,

Macedon Ranges with $232 million, Greater Shepparton with $221 million and Wodonga with $211 million in value of building permits reported to the VBA.
