Winter’s chill no excuse for garden A

LMOST halfway through our chilliest time of year and I haven’t stopped. We’ve been busy at the nursery heeling in bare root trees, roses, berries, asparagus and rhubarb and at home creating new gardens, laying turf, removing and replanting trees. No time to feel cold. My many roses and fruit trees all need a prune, so that’s the next job to do. Make sure your secateurs are sharp and clean, dip them into a weak bleach solution after each plant is pruned; this will stop diseases spreading from plant to plant. I always cut the roses back very hard, about two thirds unless they are new or a bit spindly. Always cut to an out-facing bud and clean up any small (less than a pencil width) branching along with any inward facing branches. You are looking for a bit of a vase shape, so there is good air flow through the plant, helping stop disease. Once you have cut back, spray with a rose spray or a sulphur based spray. If you have diseased cuttings, put them in the rubbish, not the compost. Cut your fruit trees back to a height that you can easily pick the fruit, usually about a third of the plant – less for semi dwarf plants. Again, it is a vase shape you are looking for. You will need to know what a fruiting spur is so you don’t cut off all your fruit for this season.

There are many web sites and books that will show you what to look for. With any young trees that you bought this year don’t worry about the fruit, as you are forming the shape of the tree. On older trees where you have made large cuts, spray them with Steri-prune (this will stop the cut bleeding) so they don’t get diseased, also spray with a sulphur based spray once you have finished your pruning. Leave apricots until summer (after fruiting) to prune as they are more resistant to diseases then. The veggie patch should be well and truly ready to plant out now, even a second run of veggies. Spinach, broccoli, carrots, peas, broad beans, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, beetroot, brussel sprouts, leeks and kohlrabi are all good to plant now. Put a bit of colour into the season, primula, snapdragons, sweet william, viola, lupins, lobelia, alyssum and erigeron, mix with some early flowering bulbs in pots or in the garden for a big pop of colour. With even the slightest bit of winter sun it seems weeds are just waiting to pop their heads up, so keep on top of them. Weed out what you can and cover the area with either weed mat, newspaper or a thick mulch, if you don’t get onto it now, the weeds will run riot come spring. So look out weeds, here I come.
