New free and comprehensive care clinic of Cleft Lip and Palate Niños de la escuela Esmeralda Gutiérrez de Monimbó

As part of the Comprehensive Care Program of Cleft Lip and Palate from APROQUEN, young Ana Jaqueline Ruíz was the �irst patient to be offered complete dental treatment, including the placement of braces entirely free. This program, whose main sponsor is the company CLARO, offers surgical, nutritional, psychological, dental, orthodontic, and auditory evaluation, as well as speech therapy. The dental specialists attending the children are volunteers of Aproquen, Dr. Daisy Masis and Dr. Jorge Castillo, in addition to the rest of the Burn Unit personnel.

APROQUEN visits more schools during Prevention Campaign The children were very happy with their coloring book.

Recently, the team made up of a doctor, a physiotherapist, �ire�ighters, a psychologist, and volunteers of APROQUEN, visited the School Esmeralda Gutiérrez de Monimbó in Masaya where more than 500 preschool and elementary school students received educational messages on preventive measures. The Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas in support of APROQUEN's Burn Prevention Campaign that started this July in elementary schools, donated in August 400 units of educational material on preventive measures along with coloring books so that it can be distributed amongst the children from the schools. This past August 26, the Burn Unit's lobby was �illed with children waiting for the famous and unique Ronald McDonald, who visited APROQUEN and for more than two hours shared smiles with about 50 little ones, all APROQUEN's rehabilitation patients from burn injuries and the Cleft Lip and Palate Program. “I am amazed to see them so content, they are very happy children,” McDonald expressed.

Dentist from APROQUEN trains on Cleft Lip and Palate in Argentina

More than 50 hours of theory and practice was received by Dr. Daisy Masís, volunteer pediatric dentist of APROQUEN, for one week at Piñero Hospital of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in order to continue preparing herself in the specialty of pediatric dentistry for children suffering from Cleft Lip and Palate. This trip is part of a ongoing training held at this southern country and her next trip will be during the month of November.

APROQUEN visits peers in Panama As part of APROQUEN's Regionalization Program, a team formed by Dr. Ivette Icaza, Personnel from APROQUEN and from Children´s Hospital Rehabilitation Coordinator and of Panama. Socorro Balladares, Licensed physiotherapist, visited in August the Pediatric Burn Unit of Panama's Children's Hospital.

The goal is to achieve an exchange of knowledge with Panama's medical personnel, in order to ensure a better treatment and attention for patients in the entire region and with the purpose of replicating APROQUEN's free and comprehensive care model. The team also visited the Asociación Panameña de Ayuda al Niño Quemado, APANIQUEM, an organization dedicated exclusively to the area of rehabilitation.

The training was given by nurse Barbara McClean, who is a specialist in intensive critical care from Gardy Memorial Hospital of Atlanta, Georgia. McClean is member of numerous professional organizations, including the

American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), the Society of Critical-Care Medicine (SCCM), and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST). She has been granted the Beacon Award for Excellence by the AACN and the SCCM. She is also author and co-author of several magazine articles, reviews, and book chapters and has presented over 2.000 lectures nationally and internationally. The aim is to follow up on faculty training and to improve the quality of attention we offer our patients at the Burn Unit, as well as the ones that are transferred to the different health centers of the country. Barbara McClean especially emphasized during this year's visit, the qualitative growth on behalf of the nurses from APROQUEN compared to her last visit in 2007.
