The Wobbler is the winning submission for the Kingsbrae Garden National Public Art Competition. The sculpture will be constructed and installed in the summer of 2012. The Wobbler along with nine other submissions will be installed in the Kingsbrae Garden. Amongst these ten sculptures, two will be chosen for a grand prize of $10, 000.00 and $7,500.00. The design of the sculpture was acheved via sketching and digital modelling through experimentation of various patterns and forms. A number of sculptures were produced as a result of this

process as displayed by the figures displayed on this page. Selecting a sculpture with which to enter the competition came down to ease of construction, ease of transportation, and interactivity of the sculpture. The Wobbler reflects patterns found in nature maintaining a naturalistic feeling while cultivating a fun and interactive atmosphere in the Kingsbrae Garden. Through the manipulation of material properties, the Wobbler sways in the wind as if it were a natural element of the garden. Similar to a plant, the Wobbler can remain static in times of calm weather, and can begin to sway when the weather applies forces larger than resisted by the “interactive branches� of the sculpture.

The Wobbler

Component Design Interactive branches

Moily-Filled Nylon Tubing The interactive branches are constructed from moily filled nylon tubing. The tubing allows swaying and returns back to a static state once force is no longer applied. Thirty meters of tubing was required for a total of 82 individual pieces.

Backbone

2.5’’ Steel Piping The back bone of the art piece was constructed from 2.5’’ steel piping. The piping was then curved accoring to appropriate radii and welded together at the base of the largest piece. In total, 11 meters of metal piping was used for the 3 backbones.

Leaves

Welded Metal Sheets The leaves were constructed with metal sheet. They were laser cut and bent accordingly. Individual pieces were then welded together and smoothed over.

Foundation

Poured in Place Conc. The foundation is similar to that of a street pole. It is made of concrete and is one third of its height in depth. The Backbone is attached to the foundation with a welded steel plate that is cast into the foundation

The Final Product

The Wobbler The components will be assembled in the spring of 2012 in Fredericton NB for ease of transportation. The sculpture will remain in the Kingsbrae garden until September of 2012 when it will be either awarded the Kingsbrae grand prize, or sold by the members of the garden.

Kindergarten Complex During the spring of 2009, five Ryerson University departments collaborated with the chiefs, elders, and townspeople of Kpedze-Todze, a rural village located in the Volta region of south-eastern Ghana, to design and build the first part of a two-phase kindergarten school complex that will accommodate some fifty children and their teachers. Over thirty students, faculty, alumni, and friends from the departments of Architecture,

Interior Design, Early Childhood Education, Fashion Design, and Film Studies participated in a month-long, cross-disciplinary, design/build experience abroad. From the outset, the team desired to realize not only a new kindergarten building for the children of Kpedze-Todze, but to realize a model kindergarten complex, one that would raise the bar on the design of school facilities in Ghana as a whole. When completed, the project will

feature two classrooms, latrines,teachers’ offices, and a sleeping room connected by a colonnade and arranged around a secure, walled and gated courtyard. The first phase of the work involved constructing two, open-air classrooms and a unique, “hygiene court” featuring compost toilets and a rain-water retention tank adapted for hand washing, a village first. Undertaking the project as a true collaborative exercise (for

instance, those from Early Childhood Education worked directly with those in Architecture and Interior Design to conceive an appropriate classroom environment), a number of sub-teams were formed and, on a rotating basis, made responsible for each significant aspect of the work, from siting, excavation, and the laying of foundations, to erecting the structural frame and building walls and roofs, to completing the latrines and landscape.

The Waterfront Conceptual Design Strategy Tel Aviv, designated a UNESCO world heritage Site in 2003, is composed of the worlds largest concentration of Modern style structures. As degredation of these buildings takes place, regeneration becomes expense and difficult to maintain. In an effort to regenerate these buildings, the building administration provides incentives to developers allowing extreme rezoning to an adjasent lot upon the regeneratio of a modern style building. The most noticable location affected is the beachfront where a wall of high rise buildings are being erected severing the connection between the inner city and the coast (see figure 1). The selected site is one of the last large underdeveloped sites allowing pedestrian traffic from the inner city to the waterfront. This is a transitional site where the active urban city blends with a more passive waters edge. The proper solution, and there are undoubtingly many, increases the positives and subsides the negative aspects of what this open space provides for the city of Tel Aviv. The public needs to know they own the waterfront. The sooner this realization is made the sooner we can revitalize the waterfront with positive open green space. Once the possibility

for a this project is lost, it is likely that it will be gone forever. Open green space is valuable for the environment and valuable for the people. Without it, the environment becomes stale, and Tel Aviv should not be a stale place. This proposal is intended as a preservation of the connectivity to the waters edge, acting as a node for and celebratory space for the people. The social benefits of having a place to relax, reflect and meditate needs to be balances with a place that promotes an active imagination promoting creativity and uniqueness. Determining design principle for the proposal of a unique waterfront celebratory space began with an analysis of the available land, proximity to the waterfront, and importance a celebratory space such as this could offer Tel Aviv. Creativity through unique experience offered the foundation to begin designing individual pavilions capable of hosting a multiplicity of activity. Experimentation of various forms capable of hosting a variety of activities are presented on the following page. These forms are then manipulated and created into large scale, medium scale, and small scale pavilions that are to be distributed along the site according to a site strategy promoting a creative site organization.

Conceptual Pavillion Shell Design The transition from form experimentation to useful space housing activity was determined using digital modeling software by exploring the types of spaces created within the model itself. The renderings below are an example of small, medium and large scale pavilions that were created through sketching, modeling and exploration of form seen on the left. The following page contains renderings of the final proposal. The emphasis of the renderings is to remain on the transition from the inner city to the waters edge through the design of celebratory space. The intent was so that a space of such uniqueness intended for the people would aid in physically and psychlogically reclaiming the waters egde from the developements threatning to devide the city for personal gain.

The Thorncliffe Community Conceptual Design Strategy The Thorncliffe community is known to be a location for new immigrants to adapt to the way of life in Canada. It is home to the largest elementary school in all of Canada with a registered number of 4000 children. The stresses of living in a new country in combination with large number of people attempting to living creates an atmosphere that can be difficult to appreciate for the people who call Thorncliffe their home. Working with the Thorncliffe womens commitee, a proposal was created for the design of a Child Developement Centre. Helping unite the people of Thorncliffe with the thing they have in common; their children. The design looked at creating a community centre in which parents and students alike could participate in safe and fun

activities, helping to relinquish some of the stresses that comes with integrating withing a new community. The Ryerson architecture students met with the womens commitee over a series of workshop where it became evident that the large number of privatly owned parking lots were restricting positive community growth. As part of a larger design implementation, an underground parking facility is to be provided allowing the previously used parking spaces to be developed in ways to benifit the community. In designing a Child Developement Centre in close proximity to the public school, 4 existing parking lots have been united into one larger space providing the required land to create the proposed project.
