C A L L IN G FROM BU DA PE S T

Dear Guests,

The capital of the Hungarian nation remains one of the most popular destinations in international tourism, and is listed among the ten most visited European cities. Nevertheless, Budapest needs to be better at boosting business tourism, which could be one of the launch points for the city. Significant growth can be observed in the Hungarian conference tourism sector. Last year, nearly 3,600 nationally and internationally organized events were held in Hungary, which constitutes a 27% increase compared to the previous year. Tourists on business trips generate significant turnover primarily in the capital. For years, they have shown a higher propensity to spend and they typically take advantage of higher-class amenities. The leadership of the capital is dedicated to establishing a city which is proud of its spirit and its past, in which people can live comfortably in the present as well, and which is still a major tourism destination. This will be facilitated by developing the downtown into a pedestrian-friendly place, by constantly rebuilding representative public spaces, buildings and sights, and by the continuous renovation of the historical thermal baths. The leadership of Budapest aims to enhance the competitive advantage of the city in the area of conference tourism, and to assist the development of the still untapped domestic market through every means available. István Tarlós Mayor of Budapest

Dear Readers,

A modern and retro metropolis endowed with a touch of exoticism, stunning bridges and jovial people – that’s Budapest. The capital of Hungary – with the River Danube flowing through its heart, gorgeous buildings on both banks – is a grandiose and unique event venue. Holiday tourists and city tourists sensitive to the highly developed cultural scene and gourmet gastronomy are all astonished by the fabulous beauty of Budapest. Many of them return as business tourists. Those who first experience the magic during a conference will also take their families with them the next time. Budapest’s official organization for tourism and culture, the BFTK Budapest Festival and Tourism Centre, now provides a professional catalogue and incentive programmes for organizers of future conferences, which includes all the significant meeting spots, hotels, special locations, Hungarian organizers as well as travel companies. I recommend to guests of conferences the several festivals and fairs organized by BTFK, since they provide great relaxation for visitors in every season; these events include the Budapest Spring Festival, Spring Fair, Summer Festival, CAFe Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival, and the Budapest Advent and Christmas Fair. We would love to welcome you to our capital. Teodóra Bán Managing Director Budapest Festival and Tourism Centre BUDAPEST MICE GUIDE 2017/2018

BUDAPEST MICE GUIDE 2017/2018

ED I TOR’ S NOT E Dear Reader,

In the centre of our publication, between pages 14-55, we present Budapest’s MICE services in four chapters. The first part (4-5-STAR CONFERENCE HOTELS) lists those Budapest hotels that have a conference hall with a capacity of minimum 150 people and a 4-5star HotelStars categorization, or that offer a standard of service in line with these categories. The second section (CONFERENCE AND EVENT VENUES) details conference and event venues with a plenary hall capable of hosting at least 150 people, which – as regards their core function – can be hired for conferences and other events. In the third, UNIQUE VENUES chapter, those special venues are presented whose principal function differs from the reception of conferences and major events (for example, concert halls, museums, spas, restaurants etc.). With just a few exceptions, these are not primarily conference venues, even if the size of some would make them suitable for this purpose, but which are excellent locations for events accompanying conferences, cultural evenings and receptions. The fourth chapter of the catalogue (ORGANIZERS, PCOs AND DMCs) covers the wide range of programme organizers and destination management companies in Hungary. DMCs marked with the letter

‘Q’ are registered by the Hungarian Convention Bureau as qualified service providers. We trust that our publication – which in addition to the chapters mentioned above also includes much more useful information – proves to be your handy guide in the Hungarian capital! The Editor

Budapest is the city of four seasons in terms of festivals, too. Whenever your travel takes you to Budapest, you will always find high quality, fascinating, valuable programmes designed for all ages at the city’s arts festivals: Budapest Spring Festival, CAFeBudapest Contemporary Arts Festival held in the autumn, Budapest Summer Festival, while the synthesis of the arts that is the Winter Festival staged around Advent is renowned throughout Europe. 12

VIBRANTLY COLOURFUL AND DIVERSE

It is no exaggeration to state that 21st century Budapest is one of the hubs of cultural life in Europe. Each evening the curtain rises on productions by Hungarian and international companies in its several dozen musical and prose theatres. The range of programmes offered at the capital’s museums, concert halls and sports venues rivals any metropolis in the world; festival productions further enhance this already huge diversity. The Budapest Spring Festival awaits visitors with a programme that involves many of the arts, with events in classical and contemporary music, opera, jazz and pop, world music, dance, theatre and the visual arts. Featuring the best Hungarian performers and real world stars, the Budapest Spring Festival

is a truly special occasion, presenting Hungarian and world premieres of musical and theatrical productions and co-productions throughout its seventeen days. Hungary’s most important contemporary arts festival, CAFe Budapest, is a regular autumn celebration of contemporary and progressive art. For seventeen days, contemporary culture will again make a spectacular presence in Budapest, with a rich programme at Müpa Budapest, the Liszt Academy, the Budapest Music Center, the Budapest Jazz Club, Trafó House of Contemporary Art, the Castle Garden Bazaar (Várkert Bazár), Ludwig Museum, Bálna Budapest, the Akvárium Klub and the city’s theatres, exhibition halls, ruin pubs and public spaces. Terminal 1 is nearly 2000 square meters, and boasts three halls on the ground floor, a spacious mezzanine level, and a terrace overlooking the runway. There is no doubt that the vicinity of the airport and the Bauhaus-style terminal building offers unparalleled opportunities for event organizers. The terminal building, with its exceptional features, is a great location for holding both smaller company events with 200–400 participants, and larger scale corporate events, gala dinners, conferences, client meetings, product presentations or exhibitions with 500-600 people attending.

Curry House is a place of gathering, a place of celebration, a place for business and a place for pleasure. The culinary team at Curry House presents a menu of traditional and contemporary Indian cuisine that showcases the centuries of India’s culinary history while exploring the future of this classic cuisine. The core of our menu is traditional cuisine from the vast culinary regions of India that features the most celebrated elements of Indian cooking techniques. We continuously endeavour to improve the purest traditional Indian cuisine, while simultaneously creating innovative, modern dishes.

Budapest is called the Spa Capital of the World for a good reason. The internationally recognized Gellért Thermal Baths were built at the very beginning of the last century. The indoor pool is a familiar image of Hungary, consistently upstaging the huge and equally impressive entrance hall. An event organized at this special venue featuring synchronised swimming or any other water-related performance will certainly remain truly memorable for guests.

The 159-year-old Gerbeaud Café in Budapest is one of Europe’s oldest established companies. Gerbeaud House has proved itself through its attention to detail in virtually every branch of the catering industry. GERBEAUD BISTRO serves traditional cuisine, with dishes prepared by our own butcher. GERBEAUD GOURMET CATERING began when we opened the glass-roofed Atrium Room. Since then we have arranged hundreds of successful events both on and off the premises. We offer an EXCEPTIONAL CULINARY EXPERIENCE from homemade fresh-baked bread to the final accord of Gerbeaud coffee and hand-made bonbons.

The most amazing historical venue in Budapest: MILLENÁRIS, the unique place for your event! The largest millenary investment of 2001 was the rehabilitation of the Ganz industrial site, where a cultural centre was installed along with reception, programme hall and two exhibition buildings (blocks B and D), all situated in the Millennium Park. Along with the indoor exhibitions, which take place all year round, in the summer and early autumn the park offers such outdoor events as gourmet festivals, family programmes, summer camps, special programmes for children and so on.

Welcome to the Urban Betyár Restaurant & Ethnographic Visitor Center! We would proudly like to present our restaurant – the mission of which is to shed some light on the colourful Hungarian culture – with its wide variety of Hungarian dishes, breathtaking interiors as well as a 19th century Ethnographic Museum that is located just below the restaurant. Our á la carte restaurant area, with a capacity to seat up to 95 guests, has a truly unique design. Every item has a story to tell about the notorious ‘Betyárs’ (highwaymen) or Hungarian traditions, which becomes even more entertaining with our openview kitchen, where we revive the famous tradition of campfire cooking and smoking.

The restaurant itself has several event rooms. Our ‘Conference hall’ with a capacity of 80-120 people (depending on configuration) is equipped with the latest audio technology and projector systems (BarcoClickShare). The ‘Mirror room’ can accommodate 40 people. If required, these two rooms can also be connected. For an even more prestigious experience, we offer a VIP room where up to 20 people can be seated in an exclusive environment with á la carte service.

TOP 1 0 SI GH T S BUDA CASTLE

As one of the symbols of the country, this area has witnessed wars and conquests from the 13th to the 20th century. Occupied by the Ottomans, then Habsburgs, the Castle Palace has been razed to the ground three times but always rebuilt in the architectural style of the age. Its current Classicist form was given at the end of the Second World War. The Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum are housed here.

PARLIAMENT

The Hungarian Parliament, richly decorated both inside and out, was inspired by the Houses of Parliament in London, thus it was designed in neo-Gothic style, although it also bears Renaissance and Baroque stylistic flourishes. The third largest parliament in the world, it was built on the 1000th anniversary of the foundation of the state of Hungary. During the 45-50-minute tour of Parliament, visitors are shown the session chamber of the Upper House, the lounge of the Upper House, Dome Hall – including the Hungarian royal crown and coronation regalia – as well as the ornamented staircase covered with red carpet.

MATTHIAS CHURCH

In the centre of the historic quarter is one of the city’s most famous landmarks, Matthias Church founded in the 13th century. The Turks used it as a mosque, and it was then almost completely rebuilt in the Baroque period. It reached its current state in the late 19th century when architect Frigyes Schulek built the neo-Gothic church that can be seen today. Its two ornamented towers are of different sizes. Characteristic elements of the church’s exterior are the Zsolnay glazed roof tiles, as well as the winding spiral staircase in the taller tower (the Matthias tower), allowing visitors to climb all the way up to the top. 56

HEROES’ SQUARE

Situated at the end of Andrássy Avenue and at the gateway of City Park – a masterpiece of city planning from every perspective. When approached from the avenue, the 36-metre column topped by Archangel Gabriel can be seen from afar. The column and group of statues positioned near its base constitute a unified visual image with the monuments arranged in two semicircles. Under their arcades stand effigies of the great figures of Hungarian history. The square, designed by Albert Schikedanz, sits between two of Budapest’s greatest museums.

HUNGARIAN STATE OPERA HOUSE

The 130-year-old building is the jewel in the crown of Andrássy Avenue. It can be visited for evening performances as well as daytime opera tours of its magnificent halls. Andrássy Avenue (2.4 km long and up to 45 m wide) is busy with cars, cyclists and pedestrians. Numerous luxury boutiques, distinguished cafés, restaurants and theatres line the avenue stretching from Erzsébet Square all the way up to the City Park Millennium Memorial.

TOP 10 S IGH T S SZÉCHENYI THERMAL BATH

With 21 pools, Széchenyi Thermal Bath is one of the largest bathing complexes in Europe. Its adventure pool features a water chute, underwater jacuzzi, neck shower and bubble deck. In addition to traditional medicinal services, the entrance fee also includes wellness services such as the fitness gym, saunas and underwater gymnastics.

BUDAPEST ZOO ST. STEPHEN’S BASILICA

St. Stephen’s Basilica, or Lipót City Parish Church, is one of the most significant ecclesiastical buildings of Hungary as well as a major tourist attraction of the capital. The basilica is named after Saint Stephen, the Hungarian king who founded the Hungarian state. The relic of his right hand is preserved in one of the chapels. The height of the basilica is, like that of Parliament, 96 metres, commemorating the founding of Hungary in 896. St. Stephen Square in front of the Basilica, paved in decorative stones with geometric patterns, is a favourite spot in summer: terraces with parasols, plants and the fountains of the Basilica all contribute to a Mediterranean ambience. The Basilica is also the venue for celebrated organ concerts organized weekly.

Budapest Zoo, which opened its gates more than 150 years ago, houses one of the richest collections in Europe. With close to 1,000 species of animals, many of which are rare, a wide variety of flora, marvellous historical buildings and great programmes, it offers plenty of leisure options for all ages.

CENTRAL MARKET HALL

Europe’s most beautiful indoor market was built in 1896. Restored in 1994, it has become a hugely popular place for grocery shopping. The freshest foodstuffs and a variety of souvenirs are on sale in this deservedly famous structure, whose gallery houses bars and bistros.

DOHÁNY STREET SYNAGOGUE

A slice of the exotic Orient in the heart of Budapest. It is the second-largest synagogue in the world, and tied with the Amsterdam Synagogue, the largest in Europe. The building is constructed from white and red brick, richly ornamented with ceramics reflecting a Byzantine-Moorish style. Besides traditional services it also hosts concerts. IN C EN T I V E BU DA PE S T ESCAPE ROOMS AND KITCHENS

Budapest is known today as the worldwide hub of escape rooms: just imagine a team of 5-6 people locked in a cellar or a room somewhere in Budapest... The group has exactly 60 minutes to solve all the problems which lead to the opening of the door and a sense of pride and success. The game requires creativity, logic and teamwork. Believe it or not, there are also escape kitchens, for instance in the magnificent Museum of Trade and Tourism, where visitors can only move on to the next task by using old kitchen technology – it makes for an exciting game involving all the senses.

THE JOY OF CREATION

Besides being entertainment and having a team building aspect, new dimensions in creativity can be explored in a unique programme that provides

a different perspective by building on several areas of the arts. Following in the footsteps of famous composer Ferenc (Franz) Liszt, it is possible to explore his world of music and fine arts, not to mention his favourite dishes, a wonderful exhibition is made unforgettable with a private concert, and one can

WALKING TOURS WITH A DIFFERENCE

City walks and tours offer the joy of discovery. Snacks are always welcome while walking, something Eat Hungary understands: tours include the chance to sample special Magyar street food such as Lángos (fried Hungarian flat bread), Kolbász & Hurka (sausages & pickled vegetables) and Kürtőskalács (a sweet dough pastry covered in sugar). Masterpieces of Art Nouveau architecture – Török Bank House, Gresham Palace, Parisian Department Store, villas lining Városligeti Mall – can be explored in a tour that ends up in the café of the House of Hungarian Art Nouveau. An evening stroll is always enjoyable, particularly along the cobblestone streets of Óbuda, where the statues on the Main Square are illuminated: ladies with umbrellas and Szindbád seated at a table. The six diners here – all within a stone’s throw of each other – serve the flavours of yesteryear and today.

B U DA PE S T D I NI N G MULTIFACETED CULINARY EXPERIENCES IN BUDAPEST Thanks to the gastro-revolution that has swept across the Hungarian capital in the past few years, it is now getting really difficult to select from among the many great dining experiences – even when we have an idea of what cuisine style we are looking for! Besides Budapest’s four Michelin-starred restaurants (Costes, Onyx, Borkonyha, Costes Downtown), Gault&Millau recommends Alabárdos, Laci!Konyha, Arany Kaviár, Babel Budapest, Csalogány26, Fausto’s, Innio, Olimpia, Salon, St Andrea and Tanti as being among the best in the fine dining category, supplemented by restaurant MÁK as recommended by the Hungarian-published Dining Guide. However, we can suggest quality dishes at affordable prices as well, one perfect example of which being the Market Hall in Hold Street, where top Hungarian chefs have opened a whole series of boutique outlets. For instance, there is Bocuse d’Or Europe 2016 winner Tamás Széll’s Stand25, or the abovementioned Arany Kaviár’s Russian bistro called

BUDAPEST MICE GUIDE 2017/2018

MoszkvaTér, Séf Utcája specializing in offal, plus plenty of other exciting places. Well-known chefs are serving up superb yet more laid-back dishes in other locations as well: check out Meatology, Házi/Állat, Beszálló and Séf Asztala. The market vibe can also be enjoyed in Central Market Hall that is famed throughout Europe. The ground floor has local producers and smallholders selling their wares while above, in the gallery, one can sample traditional dishes. There again, dining need not necessarily be restricted to four walls: the city features an increasing number of food trucks serving fantastic fast food, with their permanent bases in Karaván and Food Truck Courtyard, but there are festivals featuring street food at various points around the capital every month all the way from spring to autumn. Countless versions of the venerable hamburger are on offer in food bars and even on the menus of higher-end restaurants. Although Budapest may not be able to boast of having skyscrapers, there are plenty of rooftops from where it is possible to admire the sunset in the company of dinner, cocktails and wines (Aria Hotel Budapest, 360 Bar, Corvin Roof Terrace). There can be no complaints when it comes to the range of drinks available in Budapest either: restaurants are particularly proud of their extensive wine lists featuring dozens of great reds and whites from Hungary and abroad; a word of advice for those who prefer to sample several types in an evening: head for one of the many wine bars in town. However, if your palate is more attuned to beer, then choosing from among the multitude of local craft beers in Élesztő, Léhűtő, Rizmajer Brasserie or the futuristic Krak’n’Town is similarly tricky.

BU DA PE S T D INI NG WHAT SIMPLY MUST BE TASTED WHEN IN BUDAPEST

It is a widely-held assumption that goulash is a stew. It is, in fact, a hearty soup made of beef, potatoes and carrots, available in trad style and the customized interpretations of different chefs. One of these versions is bean goulash, in which smoked knuckle of pork is mixed with beans, while freshwater fish is the chief ingredient in the famous fish soup of Hungary. Traditional stew can be made from a variety of meat types, one of the sour cream varieties being paprika chicken, which is best when served with noodles and cucumber salad, while minced and seasoned meat is stuffed into the delicious Hortobágy pancake. There is no doubt that Hungarians’ favourite street food is lángos, a bread

dough deep fried in oil and then smothered in sour cream and cheese to taste. This delicacy is available in markets, on beaches and from street traders. From among the more ‘refined’ dishes, the top of the ‘top list’ is reserved for the range of amazing Hungarian goose liver specialities. Hungarians certainly have a sweet tooth and Budapest confectioneries serve a massive choice of local and international cakes, pastries and ice creams. The choice of home-grown wines and beers is similarly extensive, but for those who prefer a spirit, then please don’t miss out on a taste of fiery pálinka (fruit brandy) or Unicum. After sampling a couple of these, you’ll certainly have a better chance of pronouncing the near impossible Hungarian for ‘Cheers’: Egészségedre!

O U T SI D E B UDA P E S T In whichever direction one looks, there are things of interest close to Budapest – charming towns, the beauty of the Danube Bend, a Mediterranean ambience, history that can be touched... VISEGRÁD

CityTaxi_MIce Guide_210x100mm.ai 1 2017. 04. 24. 14:22:14

Visegrád is a synthesis of the past, present and future. At one time the border of the Roman Empire, the “limes”, ran past the settlement; you can still see the ruins of Roman watchtowers along the Danube. The first king of Hungary, St. Stephen, established a stewardship here and raised the archdeacon’s church, the foundations of which still stand on Castle Hill. The view from here is superb, encompassing the incomparable Danube Bend. The imposing citadel is not far away; during the reign of King Matthias, who had it rebuilt in Renaissance style, a fountain ran not with water but with wine during meetings of heads of state. Throughout the year knight’s tournaments are organized next to Sol-

SZENTENDRE

This neat town with a decidedly Mediterranean ambience has preserved its 18-19th century compact and unified layout. Its picturesque setting on the Danube, its architecture and historical monuments all contributed to the formation over the years of colonies of painters, sculptors and artists who lived and still live today in Szentendre. There is a particularly strong Serbian culture all around, brought here by Serb communities fleeing a Turkish onslaught in the late 17th century. Most of the houses which once belonged to wealthy merchants are now museums; in fact the galleries, workshops, exhibition centres and museums just come one after the other.

Szentendre is home to the first (and still the largest) skansen or open-air museum in Hungary. Museum experts revive the everyday life and holidays of the old peasant way of living.

O U T SI D E B UDA P E S T GÖDÖLLŐ

If we leave the capital heading northeast, after 30 km we arrive in the town of Gödöllő, renowned for its association with Queen Elisabeth, wife of Franz Joseph, emperor of the Austro–Hungarian Monarchy. The restored Baroque palace, originally the Grassalkovich Mansion, was the favourite residence of the queen, familiarly known by the Hungarians as Sisi. This truly imposing palace lovingly restored to its original glory has a fascinating exhibition and regularly hosts cultural events and festivals. A Baroque theatre operated in the south wing of the mansion between 1785–1867. Following its complete restoration, opera performances are once again staged in Hungary’s only surviving original Baroque theatre (guided tours also available).

the Christian Church of our first king, where the pagan rebel Koppány was cruelly executed and his quartered remains hung on the city walls, seat of kings and archbishops for centuries – attracts around 1 million visitors annually. Hungary’s largest church, the Basilica, stands atop Castle Hill. There is a statue of St. Stephen not far away, and the Mária Valéria Bridge also contributes to the delightful view of the surroundings.
