The acceptance tolerances remain well within final inspection tolerances defined in DIN 8605 – proof of the high quality of the machine. A wide variety of options improve the efficiency of the machine for the production of small and medium-sized batches.
Digital Readout (VC)
The machine is either equipped with a twospeed motor enabling 16 spindle speeds (Praktikant GS) or with a maintenance-free three-phase asynchronous motor and a current and speed regulated frequency converter (Praktikant VC) with actual value feedback. The advantages of this new drive concept are:

Standard Design Main Spindle The main spindle is made of case hardened alloyed steel. It is supported by taper roller bearings to ensure high cutting performance and workpiece surface quality (Praktikant GS).
Apron The apron is fully enclosed and also serves as the centralized lubrication system reservoir for carriage, cross slide and half nuts. Transfer of feed from the feed shaft through the worm gear is interrupted when turning against the stop by an intermediate sliding clutch. Unintentional engagement of the half nut is prevented by a push button.
Main Drive (Praktikant VC) The main spindle is directly driven without a gearbox through low-noise synchronous belts. The feed gearbox is also driven through synchronous belts directly from the main spindle.
Feed Gearbox The gearbox casing is fully enclosed and provided with an oil bath for lubrication of the gear groups. Depending upon load, the gears are either case hardened and ground or nitrified. Three selection knobs allow 24 feed settings or 21 thread pitches, particularly standardized ones, to be selected without even changing gears.
Carriage, Cross and Top Slide The carriage guides are plastic-coated. The primary advantages of this are stick-slip-free start-up of the carriage, smooth running and high workpiece surface quality. The cross and top slide have dovetail guides, play is adjusted through vee-gib strips. The pump in the apron centrally supplies oil to the hardened cross feed screw and its adjustable bronze nut as well as the guideways for the carriage and cross slide.
The advantages are: • high constant torque from 30-2,000 rpm • the complete speed range from 30-4,000 (5,000) rpm is available without gear steps • high efficiency of the synchronous belts and maximum slip-free utilization of the motor’s driving power

Mounting of the Digital Readout The scales and feed lines for the digital readout (option) are optimally protected against damage in the working area of the machine through covers and a cable chain.

The casing is thick-walled and manufactured from high-quality grey cast iron. This provides the basis for low-vibration running and exceptional dynamic rigidity. High precision, case hardened and ground gears running in an oil bath enable high gear speeds and exceptional turning quality. The gear steps can be easily selected through rotary knobs. The main spindle of the Praktikant VC is directly driven. The high accuracy, precision and constant speed capability is ensured through precision angular contact ball bearings at the front and precision cylinder roller bearings at the rear.
To enable fine tapers to be turned, the top of the tailstock can be moved on a guideway in front or behind the centre line. The hardened and ground tailstock quill is provided with a depth scale which enables exact infeed using a graduated collar.
Bed and Subbase The bed is manufactured from high-quality grey cast iron. Strong transverse ribbing and continuous guides ensure resistance to bending and torsional forces. The separate vee and flat guides for the carriage and tailstock are flame-hardened and ground.
The bed is bonded to the generously dimensioned sheet steel base to further enhance the absorption properties of the complete construction. Located in the base are the drives, electrics, the optionally available coolant system as well as a large lockable
cabinet for the secure storage of collets and other accessories. Desk-type attachments on the front of the base ergonomically accomodate the operating elements.
