MEET THE MAKER
Aiste Stancikaite worked in the coffee industry for many years with Zuma, Sweetbird and Cosy. When developing the concept for Sweetbird’s re-brand Aiste was the obvious choice to help convey the carefully crafted, descriptive brand aesthetic we needed to reflect the care and attention that goes into the creation of our products. We caught up with Aiste to find out more about her talents and how the Sweetbird illustrations were created.
What brought you to Bristol?

Do you like how the brand has turned out?
I’m originally from Lithuania although I’ve been living in different cities in Europe for the past 8 years. I studied Fine Art and then spent a couple of years after graduation traveling and working in cafés, which is where my coffee obsession started.
Yes, I think it looks great. I love the combination of strong digital colour and hand drawn illustration representing each flavour.

I picked up drawing again a few years after my studies because I just really missed it. After some time I put a portfolio of my work together, and started sending it to art directors.
I moved to Bristol from Belgium after a friend told me good things about the city. Once I settled in, I started looking for a stable job in the coffee industry which led me to Beyond the Bean.
How do you create your drawings? I draw the main object in pencil on paper, as it’s my favourite medium. I then scan it and use Photoshop or Illustrator to combine all the elements together - whether digital or done using other traditional mediums such as gouache paints.

How do I load my jar properly?
You can keep your jar running smoothly with these tips and tricks:
Most blending problems can be avoided by loading your jar properly. Always load your blender with liquids first, followed by soft solids like bananas or spinach, and then hard dense items like ice and frozen ingredients. Always secure lid before blending. Do not fill the jar above the highest measuring line, to do so may cause the contents to overflow.
• Spin the blade manually by the shaft on the bottom of the jar before each use to lubricate the blade shaft. • Don't use your jar as a storage container or let liquids sit in the jar overnight. • Ensure the motor has come to a complete stop before removing the jar from the base. • To maintain the best seal between your lid and jar, do not store jar with lid in place.
How does the dull blade blend? The blade spins over 300 miles per hour, so it doesn't need to be sharp to get the job done. Instead of chipping away at ice and frozen fruit with sharp edges, the large, blunt design pulverises virtually anything.
Why is my jar cloudy? Grinding grains, legumes, beans, rice, or nuts may result in a fogged appearance. Using some greens, spices, and protein powders will also cause it to have a cloudy appearance. Please note that this is a cosmetic alteration and is not covered under your jar warranty. It does not affect the performance of the jar. 34
How do I get the stain out of my jar? • Add the juice of 1 lemon, 2-3 tbsp. of baking soda, and some water to jar. Run on a high speed for about 10 seconds, pour the water out and scrub with a non-scratch sponge. • Vinegar mixed with baking soda and some water will also work. Cold foam started appearing on high street menus throughout 2017 but up until now there has been no simple way to produce it. Blendtec have developed a jar which turns 200ml of cold skimmed milk into silky smooth, mousse-like thick foam in only 18 seconds. Whether used on its own to top iced coffees, or flavoured with any number of other ingredients - see the next page for our suggestions.
the science of cold foam While in operation, the cold foam jug performs 2 main functions: 1. Produces air that is dispersed within the milk during a liquid or aqueous phase, known as an â€œin air interfaceâ€?. 2. Unfolds water soluble proteins within the milk, which bond to each other and stabilise the air produced within bubble walls, causing the milk to foam.
Why only skimmed milk? The presence of fat weakens the protein structures, inhibiting their bond formation and subsequent ability to trap air. As semi-skimmed and whole milk have more fat, they are less effective at forming a cold foam. 36
Why is it more successful using very chilled skimmed milk? Colder liquids are more viscous. Viscosity plays an important part to help trap air bubbles. Therefore, the colder the liquid, the more viscous it is, the greater the propensity to trap air bubbles.
Can I use the cold foam jug with any blender? The cold foam jug can be used on any Blendtec blender, other than the NBS. It's easy to set the cold foam programme as you would set any blending cycle.

Cold foam is great on it's own, but add Zuma, Sweetbird and Cosy ingredients for light and very profitable drinks. Making any of the drinks shown here, or creating even more recipes of your own is so very easy. Once we started mixing and matching ingredients and seeing what worked, we were hooked on cold foam. Our tips when developing your own recipes is to start small with the amount of anything you add. Cold foam is such a fickle thing, too much of anything and it won't foam. Just the right amount and you will have delicious flavoured foam to top, or make whole drinks at minimal cost. Don't feel limited to cold drinks - we used cold foam to top our turmeric hot chocolate as a low fat alternative to whipped cream and it's delicious.
