The Bridge March 2018

March in the Forest

As the forest wakes up, a band of volunteers moves into place at their allocated locations to begin the annual Deer Census. Each person has a separate tract of woodland to cover and must walk a circuit of paths over the next hour/hour and a half before the strengthening light makes it impossible to watch the deer undetected. For the last 2 years I’ve walked the northern part of Hawkbatch Wood. It’s strange to park up and set off in the dark but (once the grim process of getting out of bed early is behind you) a privilege to be there on your own, before even the earliest dog-walkers. How quickly the light seems to gather as I walk narrow paths through plantations of conifers, broad rides of grass along the Elan Valley pipeline and ancient woodland bordering fields and developments of chalets. A movement alerts me to a small band of Fallow Deer off in the trees to my left: three common does and a black doe, which stop and stare at me, wondering how much of a threat I pose. Soon they are off and I make a note of their numbers, sex, colour and direction of travel as they move away. This will help those who analyse the results to identify groups that may be double-counted by volunteers in adjacent blocks of woodland. I continue, hoping maybe to see a large group, but will I be able to note all the details accurately if they’re all moving? I needn’t have worried as there don’t seem to be many deer in my part of the forest. Taking a track along the side of a pretty narrow valley I see the small, dog-sized form of a Muntjac taking off up the other side, soon to disappear into a thicket. The total count of these Asian deer for this census will turn out to be 16, but the true number must be higher judging by the frequency of encounters and hearing their ‘barking’ calls.

When I’ve completed my ‘figure of 8’ I return to my car and take my results to the census HQ, where a hot cup of tea and bacon sandwich are my reward and I can share the morning’s story with the other volunteers.

The census is held on consecutive Saturday mornings in March to give a measure of the error in the figures, and the agreed totals are used to make decisions on the management of the deer: most importantly the cull to keep the population at a size where the deer themselves are healthy and damage to young trees and surrounding arable land is at an acceptable level. White Fallow Deer are seen fairly often, standing out as they do ‘like sore thumbs’ in the dark greens and browns of the forest, but there are also numbers of ‘menil’ deer, which retain their spotted coats in the winter, as well as the blacks. There seem to be a small number of Roe Deer around, and sometimes in, the forest these days, so look carefully next time you spot a deer!

Each month I sit at my computer and reflect both on what has happened in the town since my last editorial and what is likely to happen in the near future. Then I give up and make a cup of coffee.

One thing did occur to me this morning. Looking out of the window seeking inspiration I asked myself if global warming has affected the way we look at the seasons. Do we expect January to be cold and snowy? Is May still the month for digging out the lightweight clothing and checking the garden for urgent jobs? What about last month? February Filldyke is living up to its name with a vengeance as I look out of the window at a scene of soggy ground and shiny roofs. I decided that yes, we have all noticed a change, but the seasons still move around from winter to summer. The biggest change I have noticed has been in wildlife. I walk every week with a friend and because she happily lets me choose where we go I have named the walks for easy reference. We have a Lark Walk, but sadly the sky on this lovely walk is no longer full of rapturous skylarks. We might hear the odd one, but never the sight of five or seven birds spiralling into the blue.

Another walk, the Flowery Walk had a patch of grass covered in pink wild orchids. Once again, there are still some but not the delightful mass of small flowers. The cuckoo walk well, I usually reckon to hear the odd one before the summer has ended, but sadly it's a rare occurrence.

I can't compete with our hugely knowledgeable Linda Iles and would much rather ask her if I am being too pessimistic, but like many friends of the same venerable vintage as myself, we can remember childhoods full of cowslips, wild flower meadows and curlews. However, I think I can feel optimism in hearing young people talk about green issues and the need to preserve what we have and can also feel guilt in being one of the generation who took nature for granted and were so careless with its diversity. Finally I can resolve to do all those small things that together can help redress the balance. Margaret

Lenten Lecture - A new ecumenical venture

On Sunday 3rd December 2017, members of the various Christian churches in Bewdley gathered at 6.30pm at St. Anne’s Church, to listen to a presentation by Dr. David Allen. David is Academic Dean and Tutor in New Testament studies at The Queen’s Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Foundation in Birmingham. David chose the title ‘Advent Hope’ for his lecture, and helped his audience to look at various scriptural passages in a new way. His lecture was well attended and provided plenty of opportunity for questions as well as a friendly chat over refreshments.

The second lecture in this series will take place at Holy Family Catholic Church on Sunday 18th March at 6.30pm and will be given by Fr. Andrew Robinson of St. Mary’s College, Oscott in Birmingham. In his lecture, Fr. Andrew will address the question ‘Was St. Paul a misogynist?’.

No advance booking is required for this free lecture. Fr. Andrew will speak for about 40 minutes, followed by questions from the audience.

The idea behind this venture is to provide an opportunity in the season of Lent for members of all denominations, and none, to reflect on matters of faith together.

Hello Darkness My Old Friend….

Trawling the internet for 'Spring' ideas I came across an advertisement for a Silent Disco. Briefly, you get some headphones and a device through which DJ's broadcast music, and you dance away. To a casual observer the room is full of people dancing to nothing. Previously I had thought this phenomenon was invented by the writers of 'W1A' (look it up if you

Scanning my brain for further 'Spring' connections I followed on from sound (disco, silent or otherwise) arriving at my favourite sound of the season; increasing birdsong. Each bird has a different song, they all sing it at once and it's beautiful.

Then I came back to 'Silent'. Books are silent. But what if each book had its own voice? What if the stories, facts and information within them became notes, tunes, music? What would a visit to the library sound like? A bit of a din, undoubtedly, but stay with me…

When we explore a library we are opening ourselves up to possibilities; we can choose from what is available, in the way a musician chooses existing notes and makes music from them. And like the musician we can make our own distinct sound. Take a few moments to 'listen' next time you pop in.

Dancing allowed.

Meet the Rector

Community News

Hello

It’s great to be here in Bewdley. One month in and I already feel fitter climbing up all the hills! I love walking and there is certainly no shortage of beautiful walks here. Before coming to Bewdley I was at a church in Birmingham for three and a half years. Prior to training to become a vicar I had my own business and worked as an Educational Consultant.

Bewdley is very different from the urban lifestyle I had in Birmingham where I lived for over thirty years. I love the sense of community here and I’ve already discovered that there’s a lot going on and I’m looking forward to getting involved in community events.

One activity that I haven’t found yet is Salsa dancing which I love so if anyone knows where I can do that locally please let me know. My husband Paul isn’t a dancer but we both enjoy going to the cinema and we’re very much looking forward to seeing films in St George’s Hall.

Paul has recently retired from Warwickshire Police working in the IT Department so he’ll have lots of time to visit the many pubs. We have a daughter and son; Ethne our daughter has been travelling and is currently enjoying life in Bewdley. Our son Elliot lives in Devon at the moment and works as a Civil Engineer so he too travels around.

Finally, if you have a problem and want a listening ear, you’ve got something you’d like to share or you just want to say hello I’ll be having a coffee in St George’s cafe between 11am and 12 Noon on the following Mondays:

5, 12 March 9 April

Bewdley Festival presents two pieces of theatre at St George’s Hall.

The Dancing Club on Saturday 3rd March is the story of Frank and Wynn Freeman who founded their Dance Club in nearby Kidderminster in 1947. It developed into an iconic community focus and attracted all the stars of music and dance over the following decades. The production tells their story and recreates the mood and atmosphere of Frank and Wynn’s Dance Club across the years, featuring many dance and music styles.

Photo: Colin Hill

Here I Belong on Tuesday 13th March sees the Hall set out cabaret style to celebrate Elsie's birthday. Elsie has lived here all her life. She's seen wars, weddings, elections, funerals, people coming and people going over six decades - from the coronation in 1953 to her birthday party today. The action happens all around the audience – and there will be cake!

Both shows start at 7.30pm and tickets costing £10 are available from www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk or in person from St George’s Hall café.

Be a Bewdley River Bailiff

Do you fancy walking along the banks of the River Severn in Bewdley and helping visiting anglers responsibly enjoy their day?

If so, why not become a River Bailiff with the Kidderminster & District Angling Association?

The KDAA is looking for volunteers to join its team of bailiffs at its Bewdley fishery which extends for a mile upstream and a mile downstream of the town. Whether you can spare one day a week or seven the KDAA would like to hear from you.

Duties include welcoming visiting anglers, ensuring they’ve got appropriate licences, selling day tickets, ensuring responsible behaviour, compliance with the rules and promoting local facilities.

As well as receiving a small honorarium and commission on day ticket sales, Bailiffs get to enjoy the local wildlife whilst keeping fit and meeting people with the glorious backdrop of the Severn Valley and the Severn Valley Railway. No previous experience of bailiffing is necessary but some experience of fishing is an advantage – though not essential.

For more information, a chat or to express an interest text or call the KDAA General Secretary, Matt Maginnis tel: 07919 554924

Who Knew?

I came across a van with the insignia of Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade the other day. Intrigued, I asked what he was doing. I discovered that every two years or so each yellow fire hydrant is visited, opened up and and checked to make sure it works. Then all its joints are greased and the the cover replaced. Lastly the fire hydrant sign is given some new yellow paint (it's important that they are highly visible to the fire service personnel) and so back in the van and on to the next one. And there are an awful lot to see to!

Just another example of a job that I hadn't thought about. And a job that keeps everything functioning just in case we need it. MA

Restoration of a ‘Living Churchyard’ around St Leonard’s, Ribbesford

Progress already! On 4 February a multi-generational working party – 17 wonderful folk – spent a few hours clearing brambles, brushwood and rubbish from the banks, the steps and the wall. We were rewarded by views of the emerging drifts of snowdrops, signs of primroses and a few early daffodil buds.

We want to continue the dramatic improvements, and the next working party will be on Saturday 10 March, any time after 9.00. All help will be gratefully welcomed. Volunteers need to wear stout boots and gloves, and ideally to bring secateurs or loppers – but these are not essential. Refreshments – a sustaining ‘elevensies’ – will be provided!

Any enquiries to: Caroline Hall carom.hall@gmail.com

From the Driving Seat

View from the front seat of the coach boarding the Eurotunnel train

Many of the destinations I take passengers to are places of historical significance or areas of outstanding natural beauty. Such places are usually not connected with modern roads fit for vehicles of any height, width, weight or length. The coach I drive is 42ft long, 8ft 4in wide and 12ft 2 in high. Consequently it can be quite a challenge driving a coach in to places that my passengers want to visit. View from the front seat of the Challenges include the slow winding single track of the coach about to cross the Atlantic coast road in West Cornwall. The 36 hairpin Menai suspension bridge bends of the 8,200ft high Grossglockner pass. Towns like Conway, Lyme Regis and Ludlow with their old listed buildings, many of which have a first floor that overhang the road. And the 1 in 4 gradient of Porlock Hill, Devon. The road up to the Queens View near Pitlochry is frequented by coaches on a daily basis and is little more than a dirt track with a sheer drop of 350ft close to the top - I guess the many trees on the side of the hill would slow our fall! A more modern challenge is boarding the Eurotunnel carriage.

Funnily enough, one of the toughest places to drive a coach is right here in Bewdley: Welch Gate. The lower stretch is too narrow for a coach to pass oncoming vehicles and the double bend by the 'triangle' requires coaches to pull partially on to the wrong side of the road to get round them without hitting the buildings. Sometimes kind motorists do give way to us though - they probably realise we have a long queue behind us!

Riverside Church Birthday

Celebration, Food and Laughter have always been part of life at Riverside – so it was to be expected that on Riverside Church’s 25th year in Bewdley we would do something special!  180 people filled Spring Grove House to ‘celebrate the journey’. We were joined by our first salaried Pastor, Jason Heron and his wife Lynda, who led the church from 1995 to 2005.

During our celebration event, two of our founding members, Chris and Elaine Webb shared some of the highs and lows, the challenges and opportunities that we have faced over the years. We thank God and people (past and present) for everything that has been achieved.

The Mayor of Bewdley Anna Coleman and the new Rector of St. Anne’s, Bewdley, Rev. Megan Gibbons congratulated Riverside and thanked us for our positive contribution to the community at large. Our aim from the beginning was to “Love God and to Love Bewdley”. Call in any Sunday at 10.30am or visit our open coffee morning on Wednesdays between 10am – 12 Noon. We would love to meet you. http://www.riversideelim.com

Community News

Another year commences and there are a few things for us to celebrate with Guide Dogs. The two Golden Retriever puppies, Millie and Luna, that were being puppy walked last year by myself and Gabi have now begun their training to become Guide Dogs.

Also, I am very pleased to report that Bewdley’s first Guide Dog brood, our Peggy, had her first litter of seven puppies in January. There were four girls and three boys, and Peggy proved herself to be an excellent mother.  By the time you read this they will have made their first journey back to the National Breeding Centre in Leamington from which they will be sent out to puppy walkers all over the UK.  More news of them later in the year.

The Worcestershire branch of puppy walkers have decided that we would very much like to sponsor and name a guide dog puppy ourselves. For our Name a Puppy Appeal we would need to raise £5000 and we intend to hold a number of fund raising events in the coming year, the first of which will be a Dance Night at Kidderminster Harriers Hospitality Suite on Saturday 17th March from 7.30-11.30pm. Music will be provided by White Line playing old favourites from the 60/70s and more. Tickets £6.00 each obtainable from Lyn and Ian Hardiman 01562 631139 and also from Bewdley Blooms (with thanks) 01299 403340. Breathe at Cinema in the Hall

On Thursday March 8th, Cinema in the Hall is showing the British film Breathe (12A). It stars some of our favourite actors, including Claire Foy, Tom Hollander and Hugh Bonneville, and is based on the true story of Robin Cavendish (played with a cut-glass English accent by the American Andrew Garfield). While living in Kenya in 1958, Cavendish became ill with polio. He was flown back to England in a respirator and was initially given only three months to live. The story of the remainder of his life is truly inspiring.

Many of you will have visited the exhibition about polio that was staged in Bewdley Museum by Bewdley Rotary Club. Rotary clubs in Great Britain and Ireland have raised over £20 million (€24 million) for the international End Polio Now campaign. (More information can be found on line at www.endpolio.org.) The eradication of polio will be one of the most significant achievements in global public health since the end of smallpox.

In view of the film’s subject matter, Bewdley Rotary Club will hold a cash collection and offer gift aid envelopes for donations to End Polio Now at the end of the evening.

We are holding The Button Oak Fete on 4th August 2018 between 12noon and 6pm.

Currently we have a number of stalls which we need stall holders to fill. The cost is £7 per stall and the size will be 3 metres x 3 metres.

We also need volunteers to help make sure all runs smoothly on the day.

If you wish to get involved please contact The Button Oak Inn on 01299 400248 or email enquiries@buttonoakinn.co.uk Hope to hear from you soon. 47

Bewdley Town Council News March 2018

Calling all Community Groups! Following last year’s successful event, the Town Council in conjunction with St George’s Hall are planning another community showcase at the Hall in April which will be an opportunity to tell residents and visitors what your group or organisation does, sign up new members and also recruit new volunteers. The event will be completely free for stallholders and attendees. If you might be interested in taking a table at the event and would like to know more, please contact Kyle Daisley at community@bewdleytowncouncil.org or call 01299 400157. What does the Town Council do? Sometimes it is difficult to work out who does what and how your council tax is spent. The Town Council have the smallest share of the council tax which we are duty bound to spend wisely. For example the Town Council keep the church clock running, provide all the floral displays, keep the toilets clean, provide the Christmas lights, pay for the Christmas tree, maintain Wyre Hill play area, give grants to local organisations, run lunch clubs and social activities, carry out highway maintenance, provide the life rings along the riverside and lots more. Our website has lots of information about what we do - www.bewdleytowncouncil.org Together Group Are you an older person interested in getting out of the house and making new friends, enjoying a freshly-cooked lunch over a natter, and being entertained by a variety of interesting events? If so, why not come along to the beautifully refurbished Wribbenhall Parish Room, Kidderminster Road, Bewdley on the second Thursday of each month for our LUNCH CLUB (12.30 to 3.00 p.m.), and also the fourth Thursday of each month for our SOCIAL EVENT (2.00-4.00 p.m.). The Group is run by a friendly and welcoming team of volunteers who would love to see you! Call Liz on 01299 403053 or the Town Council on 01299 400157 or just come along to one of the social events (lunches need to be booked). £4.00 Lunch Club (dinner & pudding & tea/coffee), £2.00 Social Event Afternoon (with tea & cakes) plus a raffle and book table. We have Max Keen’s talk on the Civil War on the 26th April! Budget 2018/2019 At its meeting on the 8th January, the Town Council set its annual budget and decided to raise its portion of the Council Tax by 7p per week for each household or 10.4%. This is to ensure that we are able to continue to provide local services such as the public toilets, Christmas lights, events, festivals and also respond to calls from the District Council to take on new services and functions where they might not otherwise be provided. The budget also builds in a move to more accessible offices in Load Street, grant funding for local organisations and the provision of summer floral displays. The budget can be viewed online at www.bewdleytowncouncil.org or at the Town Council’s offices. Future Town Council Meetings The next meeting is: 5th March 2018 at 7pm in The Guildhall. Meeting Agendas and Minutes are posted on town notice boards and are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org.
